Bender. - Bro. David Bender was born May 2, 1832, in Lancaster Co., Pa.; died at his home near Milford, Nebr., Oct. 10, 1912; aged 80 y. 5 m. 8 d. He was married to Lydia Miller Jan. 29, 1855, who died May 7, 1873. To this union were born 4 sons and 4 daughters; 1 son and 1 daughter preceded him to the spirit world. On April 1, 1875, he was again married to Lydia Miller. Grandpa Bender was a faithful and an active member of the Amish Mennonite Church, from his youth, and his place was seldom vacant. His death was caused by several strokes of paralysis, being confined to his bed but 2 days. With a smile, he fell asleep in Jesus, where he so much longed to be. He is survived by wife, 3 sons, 3 daughters, 34 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Funeral services Oct. 12 at the East Fairview Church, conducted by Jacob Stauffer and Sanford C . Yoder. Text, Isa. 38: 1, latter clause.

Barbarea Schlegel, daughter of Jacob and Magdalena (Brenneman) Bender, was born near New Hamburg, Ont., on Nov. 16,1837. She was joined in holy wedlock to Nicolas Schegel of PerthCo., Ont., Feb. 2, 1858, and moved on the homestead in South Easthope where she resided till her death for nearly 70 years. This union was blest with 5 sons and 4 daughters (Magdalena, Nicholaus, Barbara, Jacobina, Jacob, Christian, Catherine, Joseph and Aaron - of whom Barbara and Jacobina preceded the mother in infancy, and Christian died in 1908. They lived in matrimony 38y. 9 m. 10 d., when her husband died, and in widowhood she lived 31 y. 1 m. 4 d., till Dec. 16, 1927; aged 90 y. 1 m. She was called to the heavenly home, which was her great desire. She leaves 4 sons, 2 daughters, 16 grandchildren, and 4 great™grandchildren. She accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her Savior in her young years and was a faithful sister in the East Zorra Amish Mennonite congregation near Tavistock, Ont., of which she was a life-long member. She was of a cheerful, kind and loving disposition, always had a kind word for every one, and was beloved by every one. Grandma Schlegel, as she was called by every one, is the last of above named family, and relatives are scattered all over the United States and Canada. Pre. John Warye of Ohio and Christ Warye of Iowa were her first cousins. She was laid to rest by the side of her husband in the East Zorra A.M. Cemetery, adjoining the church, Dec. 20, 1927, when services wereconducted by Brethren D.S. Jutzi (I Pet. 1) Peter Boshart (Rev. 14: 13) and Jacob R. Bender (John 14: 6) where a large number of friends were gathered together to pay their last tribute to the departed.

Bender. - Jacob M. Bender was born at New Hamburg, Ont.; aged 72 y. 1 m. 10 d. He united with the A. M. Church in his early youth and was married to Elizabeth Miller, Oct. 6, 1863, who died May 12, 1864. He was afterwards married to Maria Ruby. To this union were born 4 sons and 8 daughters. He leaves to mourn his departure his aged companion, 4 sons, 6 daughters, 5 brothers, 30 grandchildren. He was ordained deacon in the East Zora congregation in August, 1871. In 1883 he was ordained minister of the Gospel and in 1887 was unanimously chosen and ordained bishop of his home congregation. He faithfully and earnestly administered to the needs of the Church at home and abroad. He performed 136 marriages and baptized 400 converts and took part in almost every funeral service he was present. He was always willing to lend a helping hand wherever asked. Sermon at the house by C. S. Zehr by reading Psa. 90, with a few remarks at the church. C. Kropf read II Tim. 4: 7,8. S. J. Schwartzendruber of Huron Co., Mich., spoke earnestly on II Cor. 5: 1-10. Burial in cemetery adjoining.

Death of John M. Bender

The death took place on Tuesday last at his home in Wilmot and South Easthope Townline of a well known and highly respected resident of this neighborhood in the person of Mr. John M. Bender at the age of 69 years, 10 months, and 13 days. The deceased had been in failing health for the past six months, but had been able to be about until a few days before his death, when he sunk rapidly and passed away. The late Mr. Bender was born in Wilmot Township, the son of the late John Bender. After his marrage in 1870 to Catharine Ruby he lived in East Zorra for six years, but for nearly 40 years he followed the occupation of farming on the place where he died. Three years ago he retired and came to New Hamburg for a short time after which he made his home with his son Joseph. Mr. Bender was a successful farmer and beloved by all who knew him. He leaves to mourn his loss, besides his widow, four sons and one daughter, namely: Joseph, John and Moses of Wilmot, Sam uel J. of New Hamburg, and Annie at home. He is also survived by three brothers, Solomon olomon and David of East Zorra, and Samuel of New Hamburg. The funeral took place on Thursday forenoon to the 16th line Cemetery, East Zora. We extend to the bereaved family our heartfelt sympathy.

On Dec. 12, 1876, he was joined in holy wedlock to Sister Veronica Steinman of Waterloo Co., Ont., and moved to the farm in East Zorra where they lived until his death. This union was blest with eight children of whom three preceded him in death. Bro. Bender always took an active part in Sunday school work and young people's meetings. His seat in church was seldom vacant. He was always able to attend to the very last as the call of death came very sudden. He leaves to mourn his death his beloved wife, 2 sons and 2 daughters (Noah of New hamburg, Ont.; Simon, of Tavistock, Ont.; Mary, wife of Eli Ruby in California; and Katie, wife of Amos Baechler on the homestead). Daniel, the oldest son, has not been heard from for eighteen years . 25 grandchildren (3 preceded him), and 2 brothers (Samuel and Daniel) also survive. Services at the home were conducted by Bro. Menno Kipfer and by Bros. Dan Leobold, Osiah Cressman in English, and Bro. Dan S. Jutzi in German, at East Zorra A. M. Church where a large concourse of friends and relatives gathered to pay the last tribute of respect to our departed brother. Interment in adjoining cemetery.

He accepted Christ as his Savior in his seventeenth year and was a consistent member of the Amish Mennonite Church to the end. He was married to Magdalena Lebold on Jan. 9, 1883. She preceded him in death Jan. 8, 1929. One son and 3 daughters were born to them. He is survived by 1 son, 2 daughters, 12 grandchildren, and 1 brother. One daughter preceded him in death. Services were held at the home and at the Steinman A. M. Church by Bros. Chr. Gascho, Osiah Cressman, and D. H. Steinman. Texts, Phil. 1: 20, 21 and Heb. 3: 1-6. Interment in adjoining cemetery.

Death of Samuel Bender - the death occurred at his home in Baden on Saturday last of Mr. Samuel Bender at the age of 70 years, 11 months and 7 days. The deceased had been in failing health for several years, but was only confined to bed for one day. The late Mr. Bender was born in Wilmot and spent the greater part of his life in farming. For some years he owned the farm now possessed by Mr. Em. Gerber in town. Leaving here he moved to Baden where he had charge of the telephone exchange. The deceased was a faithful adherent of the A.M. Church, a kindly friend to all, and was greatly esteemed by all who knew him. He was married to Magdalena Lebold, who predeceased him in January of last year. There are left to mourn him one son, Allen, Baden, and two daughters, Mrs. Sarah Jutzi, of Kingwood, and Mrs. David Steinman, of Vineland, also one brother, David M. Bender, of Cassel. The funeral was held on Tuesday forenoon to the Steinman A. M. Church and cemetery and was very largely attended.

Bender - David M., 8th son of the late John and Catherine (Miller) Bender, was born Jan. 28, 1864, in Waterloo Co., Ont., where he grew to manhood. He accepted Christ as his personal Savior in his youth and was received in church fellowship by water baptism by Bishop John Gascho of the Wilmot congregation. In this faith he remained faithful to the end. On Dec. 6, 1887 he was joined in holy wedlock to Sister Barbara Zehr of East Zorra. After their marriage they settled in East Zorra. After their marriage they settled in East Zorra and were faithful members in East Zorra congregation, always present at church services, rain or shine, although having several miles to come. This union was blessed with 4 children (Peter of East Zorra; Bena, wife of Noah Lichti, of South Easthope; Annie, wife of Limon Hellmuth, near Ingersoll, Ont.; Katie, wife of Joel Albrecht, of East Zorra). He always enjoyed fairly good health with the exception of last year of his life. In November, 1934, he went to Stratford General Hospital for an operation which proved unsuccessful and thencoming to the home of his son-in-law (Noah Lichti in South Easthope) where he suffered severely at times till death relieved him on March 29, 1935; aged 71 y. 2 m. 1 d. He leaves his bereaved companion, 1 son, 3 daughters, 31 gandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren. Services at home by Jacob R. Bender, and at the East Zorra Church by M.Kuepfer, D.S.Iutzi, and Jacob R. Bender. Interment in adjoining cemetery.

Bender.-John H., eldest son of Christian and Catherine (Honderich) Bender, was born in Waterloo Co., Ont., Aug. 5, 1849; died April 27, 1934; aged 84 y. 8 m. 22 d. He was a member of the A. M. Church from his youth. In January, 1872, he was married to Barbara Brenneman of Perth Co., Ont. This union was blessed with 3 children (Jacob B. Bender and Lydia at home, and Mattie-wife of Christ R. Iutzi), all of East Zorra. His wife preceded him in death more than two years. He leaves 1 son, 2 daughters, 17 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, 3 brothers, and 4 sisters. After his marriage in 1872, he had his home on the 16 line of East Zorra Township, and in all these years he never missed being home a night, except two years ago when he made a trip to Clarence Center, N. Y., for a few days. Services were held at the home by Jacob R. Bender, and at the church by D. D. Lebold, Chris Schultz, and D. S. Jutzi. A large host of friends gathered to pay the last respects to the departed. Burial on May 1 at East Zorra A. M. Church.

On Dec. 4, 1883, she was united in marriage to John Mayer who preceded her to the glory world about five months ago. She leaves to mourn her departure: 4 children, two daughters, Mrs. Ben Gingerich of Kalona, Ia., and Lydia at home; two sons, Solomon and Ezra of Windsor township; 14 grandchildren; 1 brother, John Jutzi of Ont., Canada; and a host of relatives and friends. One daughter Emma, Mrs. Joel Widrich of N Y., preceded her in death 13 years ago. In her youth she accepted Christ as her personal Savior and became a member of the Amish Mennonite Church. She was a faithful member to the end. Her chief aim and desire was to see her children faithful in the Lord, which was her daily prayer. By her departure we keenly feel our loss of a mother's devoted prayer life. In her last days she often expressed her desire to go home but always was resigned to the Lord's will. Her health failed the last two years and her death was caused by a sudden attack of dropsy of which she became a victim seven weeks before she died. Funeral services were held at the Pigeon River Church, August 31, conducted by Edwin Albrecht in English, text, II Pet. 1:14, 15; and in German by M. S. Zehr. text, II Tim. 3:6-8. Ben Swartzendruber of California also took part in the services.

In this state she spent many days in caring for the sick and needy. One son and 1 daughter preceded her in death. She leaves 1 son (Cephas of Kalona, Ia.), 2 daughters (Lydia, wife of Levi J. Miller of Middlebury, Ind., and Fannie, wife of David S. Miller of Goshen, Ind.), 12 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild, 4 brothers and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services at the home of her son-in-law, David S. Miller, where she had her home for a number of years, by Menno Schrock and Nathaniel Miller in German and D.J. Johns in English.

BENDER. - Christian R. Bender was born in Ontario, Canada, May 10, 1863; died very suddenly of heart trouble at his home near Wellman, Iowa, April 13, 1930; aged 66 y. 11 m. 3 d. In his youth he united with the Amish Mennonite Church, in which he remained a faithful member until death. On Feb. 2, 1890, he was married to Annie Miller. To this union were born two children. Annie died May 16, 1895. On Jan. 19, 1897, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Guengerich, and this union was blest with six children. He leaves his wife, 7 children, 17 grandchildren, 4 brothers, 1 sister, and many relatives and friends. One son (Daniel) preceded him in death just a little over a year. The surviving children are: Mary, wife of Elmer Swartzendruber; Lydia, wife of Simon J. Miller; Barbara, wife of Simon N. Hershberger; and Edwin, Fanny, Ellen, and Nettie at home. His health seemed to be about as usual until five months ago, when it became known that he had a complication of weaknesses which at times caused much discomfort. On Sunday, the day before his death, he, as he always did when at all possible, filled his usual place in Sunday school and in a very noticeable way, to some who observed him, took an especial interest in the services but after dinner when making preparations to attend a funeral he fell over and seemingly all was over within a few moments. Thus again are we reminded of the uncertainty of life and the certainty of death, but we know God doeth all things well and may we be prepared for that great change when it comes to us all.

Funeral at Lower Deer Creek Church Apr. 16. Services conducted by P. P. Swartzendruber and A. C.Swartzendruber in German and J. L. Hershberger in English.

Miller.-Mary Bender, daughter of Daniel and Fanny Bender, was born in Elkhart Co., Ind., July 14, 1867; died in the Goshen hospital while undergoing an operation for gallstones, on Oct. 13, 1927; aged 60 y. 2 m. 29 d. In her youth she accepted Christ as her personal Savior and united with the Amish Church and continued faithfully with her husband in the service of the Master until He called her to himself to suffer no more. On Nov. 25, 1888, she was united in marriage to Bro. Emanuel Miller. To this union were born ten children. Two preceded her to the great beyond. She leaves to mourn her departure a sorrowing husband, 5 sons (Elmer, Daniel, Melvin, Ezra, and Clarence), 3 daughters (Naomi, Ida, and Lydia), all living in the home community, 21 grandchildren, 5 brothers, 1 sister, and a host of relatives and friends. In her death the community has lost a helpful neighbor, the Church a faithful member, and the family a kind loving wife and mother. Funeral services at the home of her brother (Noah R. Bender), by Samuel Hostetler and Nathaniel Miller in German and D.J. Johns in English.

On Nov. 5, 1905, she was married to Daniel Yantzi, who preceded her in death on July 1, 1929. One daughter preceded her in death. Surviving are one daughter (Solena-Mrs. William Schumm, East Zorra), one son (Henry, East Zorra), 13 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, and 2 brothers (Joseph and Aaron, both of South Easthope). She was also preceded in death by one grandchild, one sister, and 3 brothers. In her youth she accepted Christ as her Saviour and united with the East Zorra A. M. Church, remaining faithful until death. Funeral services were conducted at the East Zorra Church in charge of Joel Swartzentruber, Wilfred Schlegel, and Daniel Wagler, with interment in the adjoining cemetery.

Bender. --- John R., was born in East Zorra Twp., Ont., July 28, 1867. In his youth he accepted Christ as his personal Saviour and remained a faithful member of the East Zorra A. M. Church. On Jan. 20, 1891, he was united in matrimony to Anna Zehr, who preceded him in death in 1943. He died at the home of his nephew on Sept. 28, 1952, aged 85 y. 2 m. Surviving are one brother (David R.), one sister (Mrs. Joel Swartzentruber), and a number of nephews and nieces. Two brothers and 7 sisters preceded him in death. Lebold-Mary, third daughter of Jacob M. and Maria (Ruby) Bender, was born in Oxford Co., Ont., Sept. 24, 1871; died at her home in the same township on Feb. 6, 1926; aged 54 y. 4 m. 13 d. In her maiden days she accepted Christ as her personal Savior and was baptized and received into church fellowship by her father, the late Bishop Jacob M. Bender, and was a faithful sister till she was called to her reward. On Nov. 30, 1897, she was joined in holy wedlock to John Lebold of Waterloo Co., Ont. This union was blessed with 1 son (Norman) and 3 daughters (Mary, Barbara, and Lucinda), all at home. On March 14, 1919, her husband was called to the great beyond. She leaves 1 son, 3 daughters, 4 brothers, and 4 sisters. Her death was caused by cancer, which she bore in Christian patience and fortitude. She had a hearty desire to be with her Savior, commending her dear children to the heavenly Father's care. She was laid to rest by the side of her husband in the East Zorra A.M. Cemetery on Feb. 9, when services were conducted Bros. Peter Litwiller of Baden (text, II Tim. 4: 6-8). D.H. Steinman of Baden (text, Tit. 2: 11-14), and D.S. Jutzi of Tavistock (text, Jno. 14: 18). We are indeed sorry to report the untimely death of Mrs. Joseph Baechler, Jr., whose end was not expected, as she was in the prime of life. The funeral which was held to the Mennonite Church and Cemetery, was attended by the largest crowd of people seen at a funeral for many years, which showed the high esteem and love in which Mrs. Baechler was held by all. The community of Zorra will sympathize with the bereaved husband and family. Sweetly she does slumber. She's gone but her charming love and ways will never be forgotten.

In early youth, she accepted Christ as her personal Saviour, was received into church fellowship through water baptism by her late father, and lived an exemplary Christian life until the heavenly summons called her. On Nov. 25, 1909, she was united in holy matrimony to Bro. John B. Schwartzentruber of Petersburg, Ont. This union was blessed with three children (Serenus, on adjoining farm; Corsin, at home; and Lily May wife of Henry Jantzi, of East Zorra). She leaves her bereaved husband, 2 sons, 1 daughter, 2 grandchildren, 4 brothers (John R., Joseph R., Jacob R., all of Tavistock, and David R., of New Hamburg), and 2 sisters (Catherine, widow of Peter S. Zehr; Sarah, wife of Joel Schwartzentruber, of East Zorra). Her aged mother-in-law, Elizabeth Schwartzentruber, an invalid for nearly 40 years, also survives. Six sisters and 1 grandchild predeceased her. Funeral services were held Aug. 4 at the home, conducted by D. Wagler, and at the East Zorra A.M. Church by Brethren M. Kipfer, Moses H. Roth, and Dan S. Jutzi. A large concourse of friends from far and near gathered to pay their last respects to our beloved sister. May she rest in peace.

In early youth she accepted Christ as her Saviour and was baptized by her grandfather, Bishop Joseph Ruby of the East Zorra congregation, remaining a faithful and consistent member until the end. She was of a cheerful disposition and manifested a meek and quiet spirit which is in the sight of God of great price. Surviving are 4 brothers (Joseph, John, and Moses, of Wilmot; and Samuel, of New Hamburg), one adopted sister (Catherine--Mrs. Chris K. Bender, of East Zorra), 9 nephews, and 7 nieces. Services were conducted at the home and at the East Zorra A.M. Church. Interment was made in the adjoining cemetery.

Samuel J. Bender Dies Suddenly

Stricken with a sudden heart attack early last Friday morning, Mr. Samuel J. Bender died unexpectedly shortly afterwards at the age of 68 years. He had retired the evening before in apparent good health. Mr. Bender was a lifelong resident of this community and was well and favorably known in the district.

He was a son of the late John M. Bender and Catharine Ruby and was born May 12, 1881, on th Bender homestead adjoining the western limits of New Hamburg. He was married on Jan. 3, 1904, to Fannie Baechler of South Easthope. He was a resident of New Hamburg for the past 35 years and for the past 20 years was local salesman for the Viking Cream Separator Co. The deceased was a member of Steinman A.M. Church.

Surviving besides his wife, are two daughters, Matilda, at home, and Mrs. Solomon (Alma) Roth, New Hamburg; two brothers, Moses and Joseph of Wilmot Township, and one sister, Mrs. Christian (Katie) Bender, New Hamburg. A brother, John, and one sister, Anna, predeceased him. Also surviving are six grandchildren.

The funeral was held on Monday afternoon from his late home, Huron St., to Steinman A.M. Church for service and interment in the Steinman Cemetery. Bishop Moses O. Jantzi officiated. The funeral was attended by a large circle of relatives and friends.

John Bender

John Bender of Tavistock, formerly of New Hamburg and South Easthope Township, died last Friday at the age of 91.

Born Oct. 7, 1878 in Wilmot Township, he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Bender and farmed in South Easthope Township for many years before retiring and moving to New Hamburg. He came to Tavistock three months ago. Mr. Bender was a member of the East Zorra Mennonite Church 16th line.

His wife, the former Magdalena Zehr predeceased him in 1955. Surviving are one son, Joseph, Shakespeare; three daughters, Mrs. Bena Kropf, New Hamburg; Mrs. David (Annie) Streicher and Mrs. John (Elizabeth) Schwartzentruber, Tavistock; three sisters, Mrs. Noah (Lena) Wagler, New Hamburg; Mrs. Christian (Katie) Lebold and Mrs. Christian (Anne) Baechler, both of Tavistock; 16 grandchildren, 48 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by one son and six brothers.

Funeral service was held at the East Zorra Mennonite church, 16th line, on Monday, Rev Newton Gingerich officiating.

Burial took place in the church cemetery.

Ezra Bender

Ezra Bender of RR 1, Tavistock, died on Wednesday of last week at the age of 79.

A son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Bender, he was born in Wilmot Township, Sept. 18, 1980. He farmed in East Zorra Township until he retired a few years ago. He was a member of the East Zorra Mennonite Church, 16th line. He was predeceased by his first wife, the former Katie Lebold, in 1933.

Surviving are his second wife, the former Clara Ruby; three sons, Mervin of New Hamburg and Rufus and Christian, both of Durham; four daughters, Mrs. Elroy (Verda) Schwartzentruber of Hickson, Mrs. Clayton (Rosetta) Bender of RR 1, Tavistock, Mrs, Neil (Viola) Ropp of New Hamburg and Mrs. Lyle (Ruby) Weber of Waterloo; one brother, John of Tavistock; three sisters, Mrs. Christian (Katie) Lebold of Tavistock and Mrs. Noah (Lena) Wagler and Mrs. Christian (Annie) Baechler, both of Shakespeare; 35 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by five brothers.

Funeral service was held at the 16th line church on Saturday, Rev. Newton Gingrich officiating.

Burial took place in the adjoining church cemetery.

On Jan. 12, 1909, she was married to Noah S. Lichti, who survives. Born Aug. 6, 1867, Mrs. Streicher was the daughter of the late John Swartzentruber and Maria Bender of Wellesley. She attended the Maple View Mennonite Church.

Mrs. Streicher is survived by a son, Christian Streicher, and one daughter, Mrs. George (Mary) Bast, both of Wellesley. One brother. Christian Swartzentruber of Pigeon, Mich., and a sister, Mrs. Jacob Wagler of Millbank, also survive.

He was a member of Steinman Mennonite Church, Baden. Husband of the late Lydia S. Roth, who predeceased him in 1975. John I. Bender

John I. Bender of 61 Brewery St., Baden, formerly of Kingwood, died today at St. Mary's Hospital, Kitchener, after a brief illness. He was 76.

Born in East Zorra Township April 20, 1892, he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Daniel H. Bender. He farmed near Kingwood, retiring to Baden in October, 1952. He was a member of the Maple View Mennonite Church, Wellesley.

His wife; the former Mary Jantzi predeceased him Jan. 4, 1953. He was also predeceased by three sisters.

Surviving are one son, Daniel of Wellesley and three daughters, Mrs. Rudy (Elfrieda) Steinman, Mrs. Nelson (Selma) Roth, both of RR 2, New Hamburg and Mrs. Willis (Laura) Lichti of RR 1, New Hamburg. Also surviving is a brother, Rev. Allan Bender of Wellesley and a sister, Mrs. Nicholas (Elizabeth) Kuepfer of Millbank. There are 11 grandchildren.

Funeral service was held at Maple View Mennonite Church on Sunday. Burial took place in the church cemetery.

Futher Funeral Home, Wellesley was in charge of arrangements.

Bender. - Simon, son of Joseph H. and Mary Bender, was born near New Hamburg, Waterloo Co., Ont., in 1890; died at his home on Oct. 23, 1912; aged 22 y. A sister, brother, father, mother, and 2 grandmothers, with a host of friends survive to mourn his early departure. His last and only sickness, appendicitis, continued for only eight days when he was relieved by death. He bore his sickness with much patience and was resigned to the will of God. Previous to his death he said to his loving sister who was standing by his bedside that if she would see such a beautiful glory as he does she would not mourn. About four years ago he accepted Christ as his Savior, united with the A. M. Church and was a faithful member until his death. Is this not true as the psalmist says, "As for man, his days are as grass: as a flower of the field so he flourisheth. For the wind passeth over and it is gone, and the place thereof shall know it no more" (Psa. 103: 15, 16). Funeral services were conducted at the East Zorra Church by D. H. Steinman and J. M. Bender. Interment at the 19th Line Cemetery.

Ivan Bender

A wellknown resident of this district, Ivan Bender, died suddenly at his home in Baden on Saturday evening in his 50^th year. He was born in Wilmot township near New Hamburg Oct. 8, 1909, a son of the late Joseph H. Bender and Catharine Zehr. Following his marriage to Lena Kropf on Oct. 31, 1931, he lived in New Hamburg, later moving to Woodstock where he resided for 15 years before moving to Baden eight years ago. He was a member of the United Missionary Church in Kitchener. Surviving besides his wife are three sons, Gerald R., Woodstock and Richard and Thomas at home; also one daughter Diane, at home, and one sister, Mrs. Lydia Roth, of Baden. One grandchild also survives. He was predeceased by one brother and one sister. The remains rested at the Futher-Omand Funeral Home, New Hamburg until Tuesday noon when they were removed to the United Missionary Church, Kitchener, for a service at 2 p.m. which was in charge of Rev. Allan Embree. Interment took place the Steinman Amish Mennonite Cemetery near Baden.

Jutzi.-Jacob B., son of Samuel and Catherine (Brenneman) Jutzi, was born April 11. 1882, in Perth Co., Ont.; died at his home in Baden, Ont., Nov. 28, 1937, of heart disease and complications; aged 55 y. 7 m. 17 d. He united with the Amish Mennonite Church in his youth and remained faithful to the end. In the year 1906 he united in holy matrimony with Leah, daughter of the late Samuel and Mattie (Lebold) Bender. To this union were born 1 daughter (Salome, Mrs. Christian Zehr), and 3 sons (Samuel, Emerson, and Alvin). They lived together 9 y. 10 m. 18 d. On Sept. 19, 1917, he was united in holy matrimony to Fannie, daughter of Christian and Leah (Zehr) Gascho. To this union was born 1 daughter (Ada Leah). He had been in poor health for almost a year; had not been able to work since May. Several times for a period of 10 days he was confined to his bed for rest, which always seemed to do him good; but he gradually became weaker. Nov. 7 he took a turn for the worse and was confined to bed for 3 weeks, from which he never arose. Having enlargement of the heart, pneumonia set in, and on the 23rd he had a paralytic stroke. He was conscious almost to the end. He bore his suffering with much patience, and that sweet smile when one of his family would come near him, will never be forgotten. Although at times he was very delirious, the Christ-life would shine in him. He had been a Sunday-school teacher for many years and the Bible was his chief reading. He was fully resigned to the will of God, but often expressed his grief to leave his family behind. With a wave of his hand he bade us all good-bye and on a Sunday noon he left us for the great beyond. He leaves his bereaved widow, 2 daughters, 3 sons, 1 grandson, all of Baden; 2 brothers (Solomon of Albany, Oreg., and Daniel of Milverton, Ont.), 1 sister (Mary, Mrs. Ends Schultz of Milverton). His brother John, and sister Catherine, and his parents predeceased him. Funeral services were held Dec. 1, at his late residence in Baden, conducted by Peter Boshart, and at Steinmans church of which he was a member, conducted by the home bishop, Moses 0. Jantzi in German (Text, Psa. 39 : 4, 5) and Moses Schantz in English (Text, II Cor. 4: 17). Burial in adjoining cemetery.

Horse's Kick Proves Fatal Noah Kropf Died in Stratford Hospital

Kicked in the head by a horse on the farm of his sister, Mrs. Noah Brenneman, on Lot 8 Con. 3, South Easthope, about five miles southwest of New Hamburg, Noah Kropf, aged 54 died in the Stratford hospital on Wednesday morning without regaining consciousness. The accident occurred last Saturday evening when Mr. Kropf let two horses out of the stable to put into pasture. Following the horses out of the stable door, one of them reared and kicked him above the eye from which he suffered a fractured skull and terrible head injuries. He was found unconscious in the barnyard and was rushed to the Stratford hospital for treatment, but from the outset no hope was held out for his recovery. The unfortunate accident victim was a son of the late Christian Kropf and was born near Cassel on September 17th, 1878. He spent his whole life in that district. Since his brother-in-law, Noah Bender, who died a few months ago, purchased the farm of the late Nicholas Roth in South Easthope, the deceased lived with his sister, who survives him besides two other sisters, Mrs. Peter B. Zehr, of South Easthope, and Mrs. Joseph J. Bender, of the Wilmot Township line, west of this village. The deceased was widely known and respected. The funeral will be held this Friday afternoon at 1.30 o'clock from his sister's home to the 16th line A.-M. Church and Cemetery in East Zorra.

JUTZI, Rudolph (Rudy) - Passed away suddenly, on Friday, Jan. 3, 2003, at Nithview Home, New Hamburg.

Rudy was in his 100th year and was the last surviving member of his family. He was born in Wilmot Township, a son of the late John B. and Elizabeth (Jantzi) Jutzi. Rudy was formerly of Kitchener and RR2, Milverton. Rudy was a vendor at the Stratford Farmer's Market for 25 years prior to becoming a vendor at the Waterloo farmer's Market for 15 years. He was a member of St. Agatha Mennonite Church and a former member of Poole Mennonite Church. He also assisted at the Mark Jutzi funeral Home, New Hamburg and Milverton.

Beloved husband of the former Irene Alice Jantzi, who predeceased him in March 1995. Dear father of Elaine and Walter Fretz of Vineland, Robert and Irene of Baden, Nelda and Ray Brenneman of New Hamburg, Ken and Joan of Milverton and Wroxeter, Lucielle and Bill Jantzi of RR2, Petersburg, Mark and Karen of Granton, Grant of Stratford, John and Juanita of Beaverdam, Virginia. Sadly missed by 16 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. Also remembered by Louise Jutzi of Stratford, Ivan Gingerich of New Hamburg and a number of nieces and nephews.

Rudy was predeceased by his sister and brothers, Katie and Louis Gingerich, Elizabeth (Lizzie) and Peter Nafziger, John and Susan Jutzi, Veronica (Fannie) and Dan Roth, Nancy Jutzi, Simeon and Leah Jutzi, Magdalena (Mattie) and Noah Jantzi.

Family and friends may call at the Mark Jutzi Funeral Home, 7 Spencer St., Milverton (Please note location) on Sunday, January 5 from 7-9 pm and thence to Mark Jutzi Funeral Home, 291 Huron St., New Hamburg (please note location) for Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2003 at St. Agatha Mennonite Church at 2 pm, with Pastor Douglas Snyder officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Ropp.- Christiana, daughter of the late Nicklaus and Barbara (Bender) Ruby, was born at East Zorra, Out., Oct. 7, 1883; died of pneumonia at her home near Poole, Ont., April 29, 1937; aged 53 y. 6 m. 22 d. She was married to Bro. Moses Ropp Feb. 23, 1911. She leaves her sorrowing husband, 2 sons and 3 daughters (all at home), 4 brothers, and many friends and relatives. She accepted Jesus as her Savior in her youth and united with the Amish Mennonite Church to which she remained faithful to the end. During her illness she expressed her desire to go home. Funeral services were held May 2 at the home by Bro. Peter Boshart and at the Poole A. M. Church by Bro. D. S. Jutzi and Jesse B. Martin. Interment in the adjoining cemetery.

Jacob Ruby Passes After Lengthy Illness

Jacob Ruby, a resident of R.R. 1, Gadshill, for the greater part of his life, died last Friday morning in the Stratford General Hospital. Mr. Ruby had been ill for a number of months, though he had been in the hospital for only about two days. Death was due to a heart condition.

Born in South Easthope 64 years ago, he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas Ruby. He moved to Gadshill about 45 years ago and lived there for the remainder of his life. He was engaged in farming. Mr. Ruby was a member of the Mennonite Church. He was unmarried and is survived by three brothers, Noah, and David, Millbank, and Joseph, Gadshill.

The funeral service was held at the residence of his brother, David Ruby, Millbank, Monday, April 13, at 2 o'clock. The service was conducted by Rev. Chr. Schultz of the Poole Mennonite Church. Interment was made at Poole. Quite a number of relatives from the New Hamburg district attended the funeral.

Bender, Noah J., son of the late Jacob S. and Barbara (Schwartzentruber) Bender, was born near Tavistock, Ont., Oct. 14, 1888. His health was failing for about six months due to a stroke and he fell peacefully to sleep June 30, 1954; aged 65 y. 8 m. 16 d. In his youth he accepted Christ as his Saviour and was a member of the East Zorra A. M. Church. On Dec. 21, 1911, he was united in marriage to Lena Steinman. To this union were born 5 sons, one preceding him in infancy. He is survived by his companion, 4 sons (Delton, Ivan, Armand, and Nelson, all living near Tavistock, Ont.), 5 grandchildren, one brother (Manassa, of Tavistock), and 3 sisters (Emma-Mrs. Albert Oesch, of Milverton; Ida-Mrs. Simon Bender, of Ailsa Craig; and Christena-Mrs. Norman Roi, of Tavistock). One brother (Eli) and one sister (Amanda) preceded him. Funeral services were conducted at the East Zorra Church in charge of Daniel Wagler and Henry Yantzi. Interment was made in the adjoining cemetery.

Bender.-Elias, son of the late Jacob S. and Barbara Bender, was born in East Zorra Twp., Ont., Jan. 24, 1890; passed to his eternal reward March 3, 1949; aged 59 y. 1 m. 7 d. She is survived by her husband Norman of Wellesley and one son Christ of Toronto; two daughters, Doris (Mrs. Mervin Kropf) of Route 2, Wellesley, Agnes (Mrs. Dan Bender) of Wellesley and one sister, Emma Oesch of Route 1, Milverton; survived by 15 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by one son, three brothers and two sisters.

The late Mrs. Roi rested at the Futher Bros. Funeral Home, Wellesley. Saturday noon removal was made to East Zorra Mennonite Church, 16^th line for service at 2: 30 p.m.

SCHLEGEL, Ezra\emdash Peacefully, on Friday, September 26, 1997, surrounded by his loving family, at his home, 199 Hope St., Tavistock. Ezra was born October 1, 1908, in South Easthope township. Son of the late Christian Schlegel and the late Annie Yantzi. He was in his 89^th year. Mr. Schlegel was a member of the Cassel Mennonite Church, where he served his Lord faithfully in many capacities. Ezra served as a volunteer at 10,000 Villages for many years in New Hamburg. He farmed in East Zorra township, retiring to Tavistock in 1973.
Beloved father of Velma Schlegel, Elda and her husband Sam Wagler, Norma and her husband Raymond Ruby, all of Tavistock, Ada and her husband Howard Gerber of RR 1, New Hamburg, Mervin and his wife Karen Schlegel of RR 1, Tavistock; dear brother of Omer Schlegel of New Hamburg, Edna Schumm of New Hamburg, Erma and her husband Stanley Lichti of New Hamburg, Ada and her husband Christian Bender of Durham.
