In 1874 J. N. Goebel bought a car load of Red Herring on track at Guelph. A load some merchant had ordered, then refused. And he got them cheap. He disposed of part of the shipment off the car to local merchants and others and arranged with David Rife Sr. to haul the rest to Hespeler.

It was the dead of winter, deep snow, roads badly drifted and only a single track to Guelph. Jack Limpert, then 16, who was working for Mr. Rife (and who, by the way, told me the story) was sent with a hay rack on a bob sleigh to do the hauling. The fish were cleaned and smoked, and packed, with heads and tails on, in flat wooden boxes containing about a dozen.

Jack went to Guelph and got his fish loaded after some delay, and by noon was coming along through the hills near Squire Phin's when he saw another rig coming and turned off to give him half the road; which was the thing to do. His load upset and there he was. It happened that the approaching rig was a load of soft drinks. The driver, a decent chap about Jack's own age, anchored his team with the weight and pitched in to give Jack a hand to get going again.

By the time they got back on the road and the fish reloaded both boys were warm and tired and they sat down on a hard snow bank to rest. The hour was something after one and both boys were hungry so Jack broke open a box of Herrings, the other boy a couple of bottles of pop and they sat there and had a lunch. Red Herring and Ginger Ale.

And Jack said it tasted good.

Another of Hespeler's old guard has answered the last long call and this morning, November 9, 1905, saw the removal of Mr. Goebel, one of the town's best known residents, after an illness of only four days. He was in his 63rd year and was born in Diedorf, Saxony, Germany and came to Canada with his parents, when 14 years of age, settling on the Town Line. He worked with his father for some years and in 1868, opened a hardware store in Morriston, disposing of this and coming to Hespeler in 1874, to start a general store in a building on the site of the store now occupied by Mr. R. Purves. In 1876, he bought the store property known as Goebel's Corner and here, he continued in business with gratifying success until a few years ago, when he turned the business over to his son, Charles and retired from active mercantile life. He was married in 1869 to Mary Baltzer, who with two children, Charles and Georgina, survives him. All his life, he had been an active, energetic man and was rarely ill. He was apparently in his usual health on Saturday but on Sunday was suddenly taken ill with inflammation of the bowels and becoming steadily worse, in spite of every effort on the part of his physician, passed away at 1 in the morning. In politics, he was a lifelong Conservative and had been through some warm campaigns with credit to himself and his party. He was a faithful adherent of the Lutheran Church and a member of the Workmen and Chosen Friends Lodges. He was very widely known and had a host of friends. He was one of the old standbys of the town and had done much to further Hespeler's best interests in the days, when he was a member of the Town Council. The funeral took place from his residence on Queen St. on Saturday at 2: 30 to the Hespeler Cemetery for interment, under the auspices of the Hespeler Lodge of the Ancient Order of United Workmen, the members of which attended in a body and marched to the cemetery, as did a number of the members of the Chosen Friends. Services at the grave were conducted by Rev. A. M. Hamilton. Floral tributes were rare in beauty and included an anchor from the Workmen; a wreath from the Merchant's Association; a wreath from the Chosen Friends; one from the family and a number from relatives and friends. Honorary pallbearers: John Zryd, Chris Pabst, John Strycker, Gideon Ochs, Wes Eaton and Edward Bolduc. Pallbearers: H. W. Prestien, Ab. Glick, A. Jardine, Dr. Charlton, I. W. Beaver, N. O'Hanley and E. E. Eaton. All local places of business were closed from 2 to 4 out of respect for Mr. Goebel.

Hespeler, Ont., Jan. 6 \endash While Mr. Thos. Rife, of this place, was returning home at an early hour this morning, he noticed that the doors of Mr. H. Krig's dry goods store were open, and at once notified Mr. Krig. Chief McMaster was also notified, and immediately commenced working on the case. On close investigation it was found that the parties had driven up to the door, effected an entrance, and extracted goods to the amount of about one hundred dollars.

The burglars were traced to Guelph, where it was learned they had left for Campbellville. Chief McMaster discovered that their horse had a broken hoof, by which they are being traced.

Puslinch Township Farmer Ends His Life with Two Shots from Rifle Feared Recurrence of Heart Attack Suffered Last Winter

Mr. Krieg, who lived at lot 7, concession 3, Puslinch Township near Puslinch Lake, suffered a very severe heart attack last winter. He was in bad health until this summer, when he was able to get up again and do light work around his farm. A few days ago, he felt ill again and went to see his physician, who advised him to go home and go to bed. Coroner Dr. T. H. Orton believed that Mr. Krieg feared a recurrence of the heart attack. He had kept the rifle, a very short weapon, in his room ever since his barn was destroyed by fire last year. On Thursday morning, it is believed that he placed the rifle to his forehead but it must have been misdirected, as the Coroner's examination revealed that it had simply glanced off and gone out again through the scalp. There was an interval of some minutes between the shots, while Mr. Krieg took out the spent shell and put in a new cartridge in the single-shot . 32 calibre rifle. The second shot penetrated the centre of his forehead. Mr. Krieg was born in Kitchener 66 years ago but has been a resident of this vicinity most of his life. His wife predeceased him nearly three years ago. Surviving are William of Cleveland; James and Robert of Kitchener; George, Charles and Arthur in Preston; Albert, John and Mrs. Holtzhauer of Niagara Falls; Joseph in Princeton; Irvin on the homestead; one brother, Herman in Hespeler; three sisters, Mrs. Noble of Cottam; Mrs. O'Connell of Kitchener; and Mrs. Weaver of Chicago. KREIG, JOHN C.

Suddenly, on Saturday morning, February 12, 1944, in his 63rd year. Mr. Kreig was widely known in the community, well-liked and highly respected. Known to many as "Uncle Jack", he opened his store as usual on Saturday morning at 9 and started to clear away the snow in front of his confectionery shop. Finding the effort too much for him, he went back into the store to rest and succumbed within a few minutes to a heart attack. Shortly before 10, when John Newlove, a driver for a Galt bakery called to make a delivery, he found the door open but Mr. Kreig did not answer his call. As this was unusual, he investigated and found Mr. Kreig at the back of the store. Mr. Kreig was born on the Quinnell farm on the Townline in April 1881, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Kreig. For many years, he conducted a tobacco business founded by his father and later, entered the confectionery business. He was a devoted member of St. James' Anglican Church and the Independent Order of Foresters and Rebekah Lodges. "Uncle Jack" had a happy disposition and a good word to say for everybody. He was actively interested in the affairs of the community and gave his support to many projects, showing a decided interest in sports, particularly baseball. Surviving are his wife, Margaret Baer; a son, Clifford of Hespeler; a daughter, Evelyn (Mrs. Gordon Flatt) of Preston; one brother, Barney Kreig; two sisters, Mrs. Herbert L. Ott and Mrs. Ronald Sawyer, all of Hespeler. The funeral on Tuesday at 2: 30 was largely attended. Members of the Merchant's Association closed their stores during the period of the funeral in respect to his memory. Service was conducted at the Stager Funeral Home by Rev. L. V. Pocock, Rector of St. James* Anglican Church, where Mr. Kreig was a member and for some years, served as treasurer. Interment was made in Hespeler

Cemetery. Pallbearers: James Bell, William G. Leitch, J. R. Smith, W. F. Hall, J. F. Kohli and Robert M. Phin.
