    _______________

    John Megli

The subject of this sketch, whose parentage was of German and French extraction, was born at Stratford, Canada, March 10, 1853, where he grew to manhood. In March, 1877, he came with his father's family to Plymouth, Neb. On Sept. 6 of the same year he returned to Wellsby Village, Canada, where he was united in holy wedlock to Anna Ruby and shortly afterward located on a farm near Plymouth, Neb., where he resided until the year 1905, when he came with his family to Washita county, Okla.

Here among new surroundings in a comparatively new country he established his new home, reared an excellent and upright family and was known far and near. Having had some knowledge of the work of a veterinary surgeon, his services were quickly in demand in his new location and many a sleepless night was spent to alleviate the sufferings of domestic animals. This calling, coupled with his farming, enabled him to gather around him some property and the conveniences of life. But these plans were all frustrated when the death angel took his noble wife--the companion of his youth, in the year 1918. This union had born four children, Ephriam, William R., John, Jr., and Mrs. Kate Ridgeway, who were comfortably situated in homes nearby.

In the early part of 1920 John Megli was married to Mrs. Ellen Patterson of Weatherford. In the same year under the able preaching of W.d. Bills of San Antonio, Texas, he obeyed the gospel and became a member of the Church of Christ.

For a number of years he made his home at Weatherford, where he practiced his profession. But time brought changes, disease preyed upon the body and for the past two years he has gradually grown weaker until his sorrows were wound up in death on the morning of July 15, 1931, at his home in Washita county, being 78years, 4 months and 5 days of age.

During his last illness his home was with his only daughter, Mrs. Kate Ridgeway. Here she and her brother, John, gave every faithful attention until death came.

The funeral was conducted by A.J. Bradshaw of Weatherford at the Buck Creek church where a large crowd of sorrowing relatives and friends were gathered. The singing so ably rendered was furnished by a quartet from the Church of Christ of Weatherford.

There is left to mourn his passing his wife, Mrs. Ellen Megli, and four children, five brothers, three sisters, eleven grandchildren and one great grandchild, besides a host of friends and neighbors. The body was laid to rest in the Van Dyke cemetery to await the resurrection morn.

    Notes:

Yost-Peter E. Yost was born at Milverton, Ont., April 1, 1861; died Sept 2 4, 1939, at the Bethel Hospital, Newton Kans.; aged 78 y. 5 m. 23 d. As a lad of seven years he came with his parents to Reed City, Mich., where he lived until he was seventeen years old, when they moved to Plymouth Neb. Aug. 13, 1885, he was married to Susanna Megli. They together shared the hardships and privations that come with pioneer life. To this union were born 4 sons and 2 daughters. In 1912 be and his family moved to near Hesston, Kans., where they made their home since then. He was of a cheerful disposition, making friends wherever he went; striving to live in peace with all men, being the kind of man that builds a good neighborhood. In his business affairs he was prompt and sincerely honest. He was a loving and wise husband and father, whose admonitions and instructions were well worth heeding. When yet in his early youth he was converted and joined the Church of God in Christ Mennonite, of which he was a member when called to his heavenly home. His Christian life was marked with many struggles, but as he grew older (and in particular the last few years) it was a pleasure to note his earnest testimony and Christian faith. Often he would testify of the grace of God and his love for the Church. He being the oldest of a large family, there was a longing in him for a family homecoming that he might again do his part to point them to the heavenly home for which he endeavored to keep himself in readiness. In his last sickness he stated to his pastor, "I was at times in the past confused, but never otherwise minded than to hold fast to what 1 knew I had received." We feel the home has lost a good husband and father, the neighborhood a good neighbor, and the Church a loving brother. He left us the testimony with almost his last words: "I am going home." With this we humbly submit to our heavenly Father in calling him to his eternal reward. He leaves his devoted wife, 4 sons, 2 daughters, 34 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, 5 brothers, 2 sisters, and a host of relatives and friends.

    "Farewell then for a while, dear one of our hearts;
It cannot be that long we'll be thus torn apart.
Time's shadows like a shuttle flee,
And dark however life may be,
Beyond the grave we'll meet with thee."

  12. 13.  Samuel MegliSamuel Megli Descendancy chart to this point (1.Joseph1) was born 26 Jun 1869, Wellesley Twp., Waterloo Region, Ontario, Canada; died 29 Sep 1946, Calgary, Alberta, Canada; was buried , Linden Mennonite Cemetery, Linden, Alberta.

    Other Events:

    • Eby ID Number: Waterloo-134355
    • Residence: 1880, Gibson, Jefferson, Nebraska

    Notes:

Samuel Megli was born June 26, 1869 in Waterloo County, Ontario, and departed this life Sept. 20, 1946 at the age of 77 years, 2 months, and 21 days.

In 1877, when a boy of 8, his parents, six brothers and six sisters moved to Jefferson Co., Nebraska, where they were pioneers.

In 1892 he was united in marriage to Katie Koenig. To them were born five sons and one daughter.

At the age of 26 years he became convicted of his sins and found Christ as his Saviour and later became affiliated with the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite.

In 1900 they moved from Nebraska to Mitchell Co., Kansas where they made their home.

In 1924 his wife, our mother, passed from this life. Our father went through dark days and trials in his Christian life, but he called on God for help and endurance.

On Sept. 22, 1935 he came to Alberta to make his home with his sons. The last few years he spent much of his time in Bible reading and meditation. He always loved to speak of the Scriptures and testify for his Saviour.

On Sept 6, he became ill and on the doctor's advice he was taken to Calgary to the hospital. On examination the doctor gave no hope of his recovery. On Sept. 20, at 9:00 P.M. he went home to be with the Lord.

He leaves to mourn his passing his children, one daughter, Elsie of Denver, Colo.; two sons, Ezra and George of Mitchell Co., Kansas. 3 sons, Lewis, Simon, and Aaron residing in Alberta; five daughters-in-law, twenty-nine grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. Two great-grandchildren preceded him in death. He also leaves one aged sister, 85 years old, Mrs. Susannah Yost of Hesston, Kansas.

"And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony" (Rev. 12:11).
The following poem was composed by father a short while before his death:

Love is of God, for God Is love,
Which all His words do plainly prove,
His tender love for fallen man
Mov'd Him through grace man to regain.

Man's reconciled with God in Christ-
    Now he must self-love sacrifice,
    He must abandon every sin,
If he God's peace and love would win.

This truth to Christians is quite plain,
    Yet to the unlearned much unknown;
'Tis only with the faithful found,
    In heavenly comforts to abound.

They are together knit in love,
Through which they do each other love-
    Rejoice together in the Lord,
His praises sing with one accord.

Oh precious guest! oh love divine!
Our hearts are raptured with thy charms,
When faith and hope no more shall be
With us thou wilt dwell eternally.

O may this love each soul inflame,
    The Lord to serve and fear;
To praise and glorify His name,
    In faith and truth sincere.

Oh was there ever love like this!
    How could it greater be,
Than to forsake the realms of bliss,
To come and die for me.

For His pure love I did partake,
    Since I did first believe,
    When through repentance did forsake
    My sins, then He forgave.

Oh May I always feel the love
And keep it to the end,
    Which I received front above,
    When I first did repent.

In Thee, O Lord, we seek,
    Protection night and day,
Indeed we know that we are weak,
    This causes us to pray.
