Daniel S. Brenneman

The death occurred in Cassel on Monday, February 15th, of Daniel S. Brenneman at the age of 22 years, 9 months and 22 days. He had been ill for several months. The deceased was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Brenneman and was born on the homestead adjoining New Hamburg on the South. After his marriage in 1880 to Catharine Ropp he farmed for many years in East Zorra and later moved to Colorado where he resided for 12 years. He returned to his old home neighborhood and lived in Cassel for the past thirty years. The deceased was a faithful member of the Amish-Mennonite Church and was widely known and respected. His wife predeceased hi 1- years ago, but he leaves two sons, Deputy Reeve John R. Brenneman, of Cassel, Gideon R. Brenneman, of Stratford, and one adopted daughter, Mrs. Christian Baechler, of Blake, besides 10 grandchildren, one brother, Joseph, of Haysville, and two sisters, Mrs. John e. Schwartzentruber, New Hamburg, and Mrs. Catharine Schultz, of Thurman, Colorado.

The funeral was held from the home of his son in Cassel on Wednesday afternoon to the 16th line A. M. Church, followed by interment in the adjoining cemetery. A very large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends attended the funeral.

Jacob S. Brenneman - There passed away at his home on Friday, November 4th, a well-known and lifelong resident of this community in the person of Mr. Jacob S. Brenneman, at the age of 53 years, 3 months and 14 days. He had been confined to the house only a few weeks. His demise was a shock to a wide circle of friends, who did not know of his illness. The deceased was a son of the late Joseph Brenneman and was born on the adjoining farm, now occupied by his son, Ezra. He was a kind friend and neighbor and a faithful adherent of Steinman's A.M. Church. He leaves his sorrowing widow, who before her marriage was Mary Steinman, and a family of three sons and one daughter, namely, Ezra, on the homestead, Edwin and Noah, at home, and Mrs. Elam Roth, of Cassel, also two brothers and three sisters, who are Joseph, of Haysville, Daniel of Cassel, Mrs. Chr. Steinman, Bleams Road, Mrs. John E. Schwartzentruber, New Hamburg, and Mrs. Menno L. Schultz, of Thurman, Colorado.

The funeral was held on Tuesday afternoon from his late home on the Haysville Road to the Steinman A.M. Church, where the funeral service was held, interment being made in the Steinman Cemetery. A very large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends formed the funeral procession. The bereaved family have their sympathy of their many friends in their sorrow.

Mrs. Moses Wagler

NEW HAMBURG - Mrs. Moses Wagler, (86), died Saturday in St. Mary's Hospital. She had received a leg fracture Thursday. Born in South Easthope, she was the former Catherine Brenneman, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Brenneman. She was a member of the East Zorra Amish Mennonite Church on the (18^th) Line. Surviving, in addition to her husband, are six sons, Samuel B., South Easthope; David, Tavistock; John, North Easthope; Jacob Bast, Wellesley; Dan Bast, Tavistock; Moses Bast, South Easthope; 2 daughters, Mrs. Enos (Nancy) (Eaby), Blandford Township; Mrs. Joseph Schlegal, South Easthope. Fourteen grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren also survive. The body is resting at the home of son Samuel Wagler, South Easthope, where a short service will be held Tuesday at 1: 30 p.m. A service at the South Easthope Amish Mennonite Church will follow at 2: 15 p.m. burial will be in the adjoining cemetery. Bishop Henry Yantzi will officiate.

Brenneman - Henry, son of Peter and Catherine (Kuepfer) Brenneman, was born in Waterloo Co., Ont., March 11, 1868; died at his late home in Tavistock, Ont., April 26, 1938; aged 80 y. 1 m. 11 d. His father died when he was four years old, and his mother, as wife of Nicholas Roth, moved to Henry Co., Ia., in 1876, where he went to public school and Sunday school. At the age of 14 years he returned with his widowed mother to St. Agatha, Ont. In his youth he accepted Christ as his Saviour and was received into church fellowship of the East Zorra A.M. congregation by water baptism upon confession of faith, and was a faithful member of this congregation until his death. On March 5, 1889, he was united in matrimony to Sister Catherine Oesch of Huron Co., Ont. This union was blest with 7 children of whom two preceded him in infancy, and 1 son (Elmer) died in 1935. The mother passed away in 1907. On Sept. 24, 1908, he was joined in matrimony to Sister Magdalene Bender of East Zorra, Ont. This union was blest with 1 daughter, who passed away in infancy. He leaves his loving companion, 1 son (Rudolph of Tavistock, Ont.), and 3 daughters (Susanna, wife of Joseph Zehr; Emma, wife of Emmanuel Zehr; Annie, wife of Chris Ruby, all of East Zorra), 22 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren. He was the last member of the Peter Brenneman family of 9 children, all of whom passed away in youth and infancy. There also survive 2 stepsisters (Catherine, wife of Martin Eicher, Milford, Neb.; Mary, wife of Dan Troyer, Shickley, Neb.); 1 stepbrother (Ben Roth, of New Hamburg, Ont.). Bro. Brenneman was an active Christian worker. As Sunday school superintendent he served the East Zorra A.M. congregation for nearly thirty years, taking an active part in all services, and also in young people's meeting, where he seldom failed to be present. He also took an active part in using his influence in bringing about the opening of a new place of worship for this congregation at the 17th line, where he attended from the beginning in 1935, as long as health permitted. Funeral services April 29 at the home were conducted by Bro. Jacob R. Bender, and the East Zorra A.M. Church by Bros. Menno Kipfer and Dan S. Iutzi, where a large concourse of friends gathered to pay their last tribute to the departed one. Interment in adjoining cemetery.

Surviving are one daughter (Leah-Mrs. Solomon Baechler), 6 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and other relatives and friends. The funeral services were held Oct. 15 at the Blake A. M. Church with Ephraim Gingerich in charge. Burial was made in the adjoining cemetery.

In the year 1946 he suffered a stroke and remained an invalid for 9 years. Three days prior to his death he suffered another stoke from which he never recovered. In his youth he accepted Christ as his Saviour and united with the Amish Mennonite Church of which he remained a faithful member. On Nov. 24, 1909, he married Lydia Bender, who preceded him in death on Aug. 1, 1940. He is survived by his daughter (Lily Mae-Mrs. Henry Yantzi, of Eat Zorra), 2 sons (Serenus, of East Zorra, and Corson, of New Hamburg), 16 grandchildren, 2 brothers (Joseph and Peter of Petersburg), and 2 sisters (Mrs. Jacob R. Bender, of South Easthope, and Mrs. Nick L. Roth of New Hamburg). Two brothers, 2 sisters, and 2 grandchildren preceded him. Funeral services held at the East Zorra Church on April3 were in charge of Daniel Wagler and David Swartzentruber, with interment in the adjoining cemetery.

Mrs. Noah J. Bender

Mrs. Noah J. Bender, 79, of East Zorra Township, died at her home on Saturday, January 11.

She was the former Magdalene Steinman, and was born in Wilmot Township in 1889, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Christian Steinman. She was a member of East Zorra Mennonite Church, 16th line.

She was married to Noah Bender in 1911. He died in 1954. Surviving are four sons, Delton and Nelson, both of East Zorra; Ivan and Armand both of South Easthope Township; two brothers, Simeon and Emmanuel, both of Baden; three sisters, Mrs. Benjamin (Katie) Gingerich, New Hamburg; Mrs. John (Annie) Gingerich, South Easthope, and Mrs. John (Christina) Wagler, North Easthope Township; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral service was held at the East Zorra Mennonite Church on Tuesday of last week. Burial took place in the church cemetery.

Steinman; born in New Hamburg 80 years ago; dear mother of Rev. Orland and Alvin, both of Route 2, Baden, Marie (Mrs. Ohmer Yantzi) of Route 2, Tavistock, Martha (Mrs. Gerald Swartzentruber) of Route 1, Wellesley; sister of Emmanuel of Baden, Christina (Mrs. John B. Wagler) of Route 1, Shakespeare; also survived by 21 grandchildren; she was a member of Steinman Mennonite Church; predeceased by her husband Dec. 9, 1962 and by one brother and six sisters. Friends may call at the Bruce J. Omand Funeral Home, 291 Huron St., New Hamburg, where the family will receive friends this evening from 7 to 9 and Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9. At noon Saturday the remains will be removed to the Steinman Mennonite Church for the funeral service at 2: 00.

EDWIN BRENNEMAN

Edwin Brenneman, 62, of R.R. 1, Tavistock, died at Stratford Hospital Tuesday. He had been a patient there since Sunday. Mr. Brenneman was a native of Waterloo County, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Brenneman. He retired from farming in East Zorra Township in 1960 and moved to the hamlet of Cassel. On June 15, 1927, he married the former Selma Schlegel, who survives. Mr. Brenneman was a member of the Cassel Mennonite Church, 17^th line.

He is also survived by two daughters, Mary Jane Brenneman, a missionary-teacher at Mussorie, India, and Mrs. Murray (Muriel) Poole, Stratford; one brother, Noah of New Hamburg, and three grandchildren. A son, a brother and a sister had predeceased him.

The body was at the Robert Krug Funeral Home, Tavistock, last Thursday when removal was made to the East Zorra Mennonite Church, 16^th line, where a service was held conducted by Rev. Vernon Zehr. Burial followed in adjoining church cemetery.

NOAH BRENNEMAN

Noah Brenneman. New Hamburg area farmer, died May 23. 1968 at his home. He was 60.

Mr. Brenneman was born on the farm on which he died. He was the last remaining member of the family of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Brenneman.

He was a member of Steinman Mennonite Church.

Surviving besides his wife, the former Elmina Gingerich. are a son. Richard; and a daughter; Mary Ellen, both at home. He was predeceased by two brothers and one sister.

The body was at the Bruce J Omand Funeral Home. New Hamburg, from Friday afternoon until noon. Sunday, when removal was made to Steinman Mennonite Church for services at 2:30 p.m.. Rev. Albert Zehr and Elmer Swartsentruber officiating.

Burial was in the church cemetery.

Peacefully, on Thursday, August 6, 1992, at his home, Country Meadows, Brunner, Ezra Brenneman, formerly of 21 Lawrence St., Wellesley. Mr. Brenneman was born in Wellesley Township 88 years ago. Son of the late Samuel Brenneman and the late Mary Eby. Ezra was a member of the Cedar Grove Amish Mennonite Church, and had farmed at RR 1 Millbank, retiring to Wellesley in 1964. BRENNEMAN. Elmer Brenneman was born in Oxford Co., Ont., Feb 10, 1893; died Oct. 28, 1935 at his home at Milverton, Ont.; aged 42 y. 8 m. 18 d. He was married to Sister Laura Oesch of Milverton on June 27, 1917. He leaves his beloved companion, 1 daughter, 2 sons, and his parents. Bro. Brenneman had accepted Christ in his youth, being baptized in the East Zorra A. M. Church. Since marriage he had been a faithful member of the Poole A. M. Church, where he was Sunday School superintendent at the time of his death. He had been laboring in that capacity for some years. He became suddenly ill, suffering from a stroke, from which he was seriously ill for about six days, when the Lord called him home. In his passing the Church loses a faithful, consecrated Christian worker and he will also be much missed in the home and community for his kindly, loveable, and peaceable disposition. We cannot understand why, but we pray to God that he will give us grace that we say, "Thy will be done." Services were held at the Poole A. M. Church by Brethren Jesse B. Martin of Waterloo and Christian Schultz of the Poole congregation. Texts, Phil. 1:21 and I Sam. 20:3. Interment in the adjoining cemetery. The funeral was the largest ever attended at the church.

LICHTY, John

The funeral service for John R. Lichty of Poole was held Tuesday, July 14, at Fairhaven Amish Mennonite Church.

Mr. Lichty, 94, died July 12 at Listowel Memorial Hospital.

Born in Elma Township on July 24, 1892, he was a son of the late John F. and Barbara (Roth) Lichty. His wife, Mary (Nafziger), died in 1963.

A former resident of Wellesley, he farmed most of his life. Mr. Lichty was a member of Fairhaven Amish Mennonite Church at Poole.

He is survived by three sons, Lorne and wife Laura of Millbank, Sam and wife Lillian and Noah and wife Leona, all of Monetville; two daughters, Mrs. Henry (Vera) Horst of RR 2, Milverton, and Mrs. Jonas (Selina) Zehr of Poole; a brother, Aaron and wife Lavina of Elmira and two sisters, Mrs. Noah (Katie) Albrecht of Listowel Memorial Hospital and Mrs. Val (Christina) Nafziger of Millbank. Also surviving are 36 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mr. Lichty was predeceased by three sons, John, Ervin and Ivan; two brothers, two sisters and three grandsons.

Friends were received at the Futher Brothers Funeral Home, Wellesley.

Bishop Melvin Roes officiated at the service.

Interment was in Mornington Amish Mennonite Cemetery, Poole West.

As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Sun Light Missions in Haiti.

WELLESLEY-Jacob R. Lichty, 66, of Sarnia, formerly of Wellesley, died Tuesday at St. Joseph's Hospital, Sarnia.

Born in Wellesley Township, he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Lichty. He was employed in Sarnia by a construction firm for the past 11 years after his wife died in 1953. He was a member of Maple View Mennonite Church.

Beloved mother of Marion and her husband Arlan Erb of Millbank, Catherine and her husband William Kuepfer of Millbank. Mother-in-law of Kenneth Brenneman of Milverton. Lovingly remembered by a sister-in-law, Mrs. Lavina Lichty of Elmira and by nine grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
