    Notes:

His most difficult and troublesome undertaking was the payment of the debt for the new church. At every step he had to listen to all the mistakes, real and imaginary, of his predecessors. At that time the years of bad harvests and poor markets had not quite passed. However, perseverance and his unruffled good nature gradually overcame all difficulties. On his rounds for subscriptions to the new church Father Foerster came to Martin Goetz, a good man, who subscribed $100.00 without coaxing. This man said that he had subscribed $4.00 to the first church built in 1847-48, but that the payment caused him no end of worry and work to get the $4.00, while the $100.00 subscribed now would not trouble him. In those early days cash was extremely scarce, because trade was almost entirely carried on by barter.

    Obituary - Martin Goetz

After lengthy suffering from consumption, Martin Goetz died on November 8th in Woolwich at age of 68 years, 2 months and 25 days. He was born in Sufflenheim in Alsace, lost his mother when he was 3 years of age, and his father when he was 9 years old. A friend took the orphaned child in and provided him with some education. At the age of 15, he left this place, because it didn't please him and wandered around the world alone. At the age of 20, he married a girl of the same age and emigrated to America with his wife. He came to Canada and settled in Woolwich, in the forest 2 miles east of the spot where West Montrose is now located. That was in the autumn of 1847. He constructed a log hut, where he spent the winter. Since he had brought only a small amount of money with him, he soon lacked food and when spring arrived, he was forced to seek help. He found work with the Old Mennonites in and around Bloomingdale, and had employment with them the entire summer.

Monday mornings he left his cabin and Saturday evenings he went home with a load of food which he had to carry 7 or 8 miles.

He and one of his neighbours carried the first plough which they used 6 miles on their shoulders to the place, because there still wasn't any road through the forest. Gradually, things began to go better. When he had been on the land for 6 years, however, his wife died and left behind 4 children, which, of course, was a hard blow for him. He married for a second time and had 9 children from this marriage.

He took a great interest in churches and schools and whenever there was anything that needed to be done in these areas, he was always called upon for advice. He was a councillor in his church for over 20 years and only resigned from the office recently. For 25 years, he was Justice of the Peace. He is survived by his second wife and 7 children (4 sons and 3 daughters), as well as 47 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Six children have pre-deceased him. The two oldest sons, Martin & Joseph, have large farms in Arthur township; Joseph is a member of the township council; the third son has a wagon-building business in Nichol township; the youngest brother is on the old homestead. The oldest sister is in West Branch, Michigan, where her husband, Stephan Wieges, has a butcher and grocery shop.

The funeral took place on November 11th, his name day, in New Germany, and was attended by a large crowd of mourners. Very Reverend Father Foerster conducted a solemn requiem mass and touching sermon in which he stressed the exemplary life and zealous works of the deceased. May he rest in peace!

    Accidentally Killed

Alfred G. Brohman Meets With Fatal Accident at Plant of Hecker

H-O Company - Alfred G. Brohman was instantly killed by an explosion of unknown origin at the plant of the Hecker-H-O Company of Canada, Limited, shortly after midnight last Thursday morning. Several thousand dollars damage was done to the plant, the cooker on which deceased was employed being damaged beyond repair. Deceased was working alone at the time and, but a few minutes before the explosion, was seen by Harvey Baetz, night engineer, attending as usual to the work incidental to his end of the business. Shortly afterwards there was a loud report and the night superintendent, Marshall Cochrane, rushed from an upper floor to find Mr. Brohman lying a short distance away from the machine. Deceased was an experienced workman in this line, having had charge of the cooker for the past seven years. Coroner Dr. Ward Woolner was called immediately following the explosion and, after viewing the remains, ordered an inquest. The autopsy on the body showed that death resulted from injuries about the head and shoulders. Provincial police were called to investigate, but nothing definite was done. A preliminary inquest was held Thursday morning, when a jury of seven was empaneled and the remains and wreckage viewed. The adjourned inquest will be held this (Thursday) afternoon at 2 o'clock. The jury comprises the following: John W. Currie, foreman; Christian Blancher, Julius Eichler, James Gemmell, John Clark and Morgan Daniels.

In the death of Mr. Brohman Ayr loses one of its most prominent and respected citizens. He was in his 49th year, and was born at Winterbourne, Ontario, in 1883, coming to Ayr some 26 years ago. When he first came to this village, deceased was employed as a butcher, later operating an establishment in his own name. He was later employed at the Hilborn hockey stick plant and the Canadian Cereal. When the cereal company ceased operations, he returned to Hilborn's where he was working when, about 8 years ago, he took a position with the Hecker-H-0 Company. Deceased served the village as a councillor and, at the time of his death, was a member of the Ayr public school board. He was a great sportsman, having had charge of the Ayr hockey team a number of years ago. He was a prominent member of the Ayr Union Curling and Ayr Bowling Clubs, having served as president of both organizations in former years. He was a member of the United Church and a much-esteemed member of Dolman Lodge, I. 0. 0. F. In politics he was a Conservative. Besides his widow, whose maiden name was Maude Kyle, he is survived by one son, Edward, at home, and his mother, Mrs. M. Brohman, Winterbourne. There also survive two brothers and four sisters, viz.: Alex. of Kitchener, Richard of Winterbourne, Lucy of Winterbourne, Mrs. M. Neish of Guelph, Mrs. T. Dillon of Toronto and Mrs. A. Brown of Dallas, Texas. The funeral took place from his late residence to the Ayr Cemetery on Saturday afternoon, and was very largely attended, including many friends and relatives from outside points. The members of Dolman Lodge, I.O.O.F., attended in a body and took part in the services, which were in charge of Rev. J. W. Currie, pastor of Knox United Church. During the service at the residence, Mrs. J. M. Hunt and Mrs. G. A. Graham sang very touchingly, "All the Way my Saviour Leads Me." At the graveside the impressive Oddfellow ritual was carried out under the direction of R. L. Anderson and Wellington Nickerson. The pallbearers were: J. C. Swan, Dr. Robertson, Jas. W. Henderson, M. A. Cochrane, J. C. Kyle and G. H. Lawrence. Among the beautiful floral tributes were offerings from the following: Dolman Lodge, Hecker-H-0 Company, Ayr Curling Club, Employees of Hecker-H-0 Company and Ayr Bowling Club. The wreath from the Hecker-H-0 Company bore the following inscription: From the Hecker-H-0 Company of Canada, Ltd., in affectionate remembrance of their valued friend."
