Death of an Old Settler

Mrs Jacob B. Erb, residing three miles west of the town of Waterloo, died yesterday morning after a long illness. She was over eighty years old and has lived about sixty on the same farm where she died. Her maiden name was Clemens; her relatives live in the vicinity of Hespeler. She leaves six sons and one daughter and a large number of grand and great-grand children. Her husband also survives her, though about 85 years old and quite infirm, having been entirely blind about twelve years. The funeral will take place on Saturday at 9 o'clock a.m. at the house of the deceased. Her remains will be interred at Eby's cemetery, two miles west of Waterloo.

Noah Erb was born in Waterloo township on June 30, 1839; died at his home in Waterloo, Ont., Aug. 6, 1914; aged 75 y. 1 m. 7 d. On May 6, 1862, he was married to Catharine Knorr, in which union they lived till death parted them, leaving to mourn his loss, a widow, 2 brothers, and 1 sister. About 30 years ago he united with the Mennonite Church, in which he was faithful to the end. He was very hard of hearing and could not understand much in church services, yet his place in church was seldom empty, as long as health and circumstances permitted, as he enjoyed the presence of God's children. May our loss be his eternal gain.Funeral services were conducted at the home on Aug. 8 by Noah Stauffer and at the Waterloo Church by Noah Hunsberger in English from Rev. 14: 13, and by Jonas Snider from Heb. 2: 6 in German.

Erb. - Enoch Erb was born Jan. 3, 1842; died at his home near Waterloo, Ont., Feb. 23, 1917; aged 75 y. 1 m. 20 d. On April 7, 1863, he was united in matrimony with Catharine Good, which union was blessed with 2 sons and 5 daughters. Two sons and 1 daughter preceded him. He leaves to mourn his loss a widow, 4 daughters, 7 grandchildren, and 1 adopted daughter. At about the age of 57 he realized that he was not standing in favor with God. He became willing to accept Christ as his personal Savior, was baptized, and received into the Mennonite Church, being faithful unto death.Funeral services on Feb. 27 were conducted at the home of Bro. Noah Stauffer and at the Waterloo Mennonite Church by Bro. Noah Hunsberger from Psa. 127: 2, and Bro. Jonas Snider from Psa. 39: 5. Buried in David Eby Cemetery

Jacob Erb Died To-Day

Has Been Ill For Some Months Past Was in His 57th Year

One of Waterloo Township's best known and highly respected residents passed away this morning in the person of Mr. Jacob C. Erb, who resided on the fine farm about two miles west of Waterloo on the St. Agatha road. The deceased has been unwell for the past several months and death was not unexpected. The funeral will be held on Thursday at 1.30 p.m. from his late residence to the Mennonite Church, Erb street for service thence to David Eby burial ground for interment.

The late Mr. Erb was born April 17th, 1850, on his father's homestead where be continuously resided up to the time of his death following the occupation of a farmer. He was twice married his first wife being Elizabeth Kercher, this union being blessed with a family of seven children. After the demise of his first wife, who died April 25, 1889, he was married to Susannah, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hallman Schmidt, two children being born to them.

Hallman, Lizzie Ann., daughter of Enoch and Catherine (Good) Erb, was born May 17, 1877, near Waterloo, Ont. On Sept. 2, 1903, she was married to Manasseh Hallman. In 1905 she confessed Christ as her Saviour and united with the Mennonite Church. She is survived by her husband, 2 sons (Jacob C., Kitchener, Ont., and Elverne, at home), 3 grandchildren, and 2 sisters (Mrs. Matilda Cressman, Kitchener, and Mrs. Addis Cressman, New Hamburg). Preceding her in death were one daughter (Verna-Mrs. Josiah Baer), 2 infant sons, and 3 sisters. Funeral services were in charge of Osiah Horst and Moses Roth. Burial was made in the adjoining cemetery.

Mrs. Carrie Shantz

Mrs. Carrie Shantz, 74, of RR 3. Waterloo, died Thursday at her home following a brief illness.

Born Jan. 30, 1880, in Waterloo township, she was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Enoch Erb. She was a member of Erb Street Mennonite Church, Waterloo.

Her husband, John S Shantz. died in 1924.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Howard (Alene) Jewitt of. Waterloo and three sisters, Mrs. Matilda Cressman of Kitchener, Mrs. Menassah Hallman of Petersburg and Mrs. Addie Cressman of New Hamburg. Three grandchildren also survive.

Two sisters, Rebecca and Mrs. Angeline Hunsberger predeceased her.

The body will be at the Ratz Bechtel Funeral Home until Sunday at 1 p.m. when removal will be made to Erb Street Mennonite Church for the funeral at 2:30 p.m. Burial will be in Waterloo Mennonite Cemetery. Rev. Leonard Haarer will officiate.

Mrs. Addis Cressman

Mrs. Addis Cressman, 79, of RR 1, New Hamburg, died Friday at her home after a lengthy illness.

Mrs. Cressman was born April 6, 1889 in Waterloo Township. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Erb and the foster child of Mr. and Mrs. Enoch Erb of Waterloo, with whom she lived following the death of her parents.

The Former Lizzie May Erb, she was married April 5, 1916.

Surviving besides her husband are two sons, Harold of RR 1, New Hamburg and Willard of New Hamburg; three daughters, Mrs. Zenas (Eloise) Cressman, RR 1, New Hamburg, Erma at home and Mabel of Galt one sister, Mrs. Joseph (Mary) Weber of Waterloo, and 13 grandchildren.

The body was at the Bruce J. Omand Funeral Home, New Hamburg until noon Monday when removal was made to the Biehn Mennonite Church. The funeral service was conducted Monday at 3 p.m. by Rev. Irvin Cressman.

Mr. Good came from good old hardy Canadian stock, being born in Ontario, Canada. He moved to Marion county when a small boy and received his schooling in the rural schools from which he graduated. When in his teens he served an apprenticeship in banking with an elder brother, in a bank at Utah but most of his time was devoted to farming and stock raising until in 1903 he took a clerical position in the State Bank of Commerce and the following year was appointed Assistant Cashier, which position he fills at the present time. Two years ago he was elected Finance Commissioner of the city for a three year term. In civic affairs, Mr. Good is always considerate, conservative and progressive. Mr. Good believes Canada should be annexed to U.S. and to accomplish this in part, married a Canadian girl, bringing her across the border. He has two fine children and is an active member of the Evangelical church.

J. W. ERB. One of New Hamburg's favorite tonsorial artists is Mr. J. W. Erb. He runs a neat two chair shop on East and West Street, where his numerous patrons are in the habit of resorting for a really easy shave or a first class hair cut. Mr. Erb has been in New Hamburg since 1892 and is likable as a man and sound as a citizen. Being of an enterprising turn, he has established a pool room in the rear of his barber shop, which is quite popular as a recreation resort.

If there is one thing in this life that gives bountiful satisfaction to the man who has occasion to sit once or twice a week in a barber's chair it is a nice, clean, smooth shave. In this particular the writer is willing to state that Mr. Erb is one of the best among the tonsorial experts of Waterloo county, and with the exception of one or two in Waterloo, Berlin and Galt there are none that can successfully compete with him. Mr. Erb has been engaged in business here now about six years. His tonsorial parlor is in the lower flat of a two-story brick building nearly opposite the old post office. In addition to his barber shop he has a billiard and pool room in the rear. He also keeps a fine stock of the popular brands of cigars and tobaccos, and also a great variety of pipes, cigar holders, etc. He was born near Berlin and is a son of Mr. Simon Erb, now of the firm of Scherer and Erb, book and job printers of Berlin. Referring to the subject of this sketch renews pleasant memories of more than thirty years ago. It was then that the writer was an apprentice boy in the old CHRONICLE Office (presided over by the late P.E W. Moyer) and wielded the ink roller on many on occasion while Mr. Erb's father manipulated the lever of an old Washington band press. The latter, for all I know, is probably a relic among the collection of other "has beens" not in use in the Chronicle office of to-day.

John Erb

NEW HAMBURG.-New Hamburg's second oldest business in the person of John Erb, died Christmas Day. He came here 48 years ago and opened a barber shop and pool room. A year ago, following a stroke, he retired, his son taking over the business. He was born near Kitchener neary 71 years ago. Over 47 years ago he married Mary Armstrong.

Surviving are his wife, two sons, William, principal of the Kapuskasing high school, Clarence, and one daughter, Miss Eva, a notary public, at home, also one brother, George of Windsor, and four sisters, Mrs. Lillian Fly of Erie, Pa., Mrs. E. A. Richards of St. Thomas, Mrs. W. Schroeder of Kitchener and Mrs. G. Kieth of Flint, Mich., also survives.

The funeral was held Wednesday with Rev. J. B. Dengis of the Evan- gelical church and Rev. E. G. Dale of the Baptist church officiating. Burial in Riverside cemetery.

A lifelong resident of Waterloo, Mrs. Elmina Snyder, 77, of 93 Avondale Ave. South, Waterloo, died Wednesday, at K-W Hospital. She was a member of Emmanuel Evangelical United Brethren Church, Waterloo and was active in the Women's Society of World Service of the church. Her parents were the late Jacob Erb and Elizabeth Karcher. Ira Snyder, her husband, died last May. Survivors include one son, Ward of Altadena, Calif.; one daughter, Mrs. Clarence (Mary) Heer of Kitchener; three sisters, Mrs. Deldon (Loretta) Snider of Waterloo, Mrs. Addis (May) Cressman of New Hamburg, Mrs. Joseph (Mary) Weber of Waterloo; and seven grandchildren. Eldon Hunsberger

BADEN - A well-known farmer, Eldon Hunsberger, 56, of RR 2, Baden, died Saturday at the K-W Hospital after a brief illness. Mr. Hunsberger served as a commissioner with the Wilmot Township Municipal Telephone System and was a church deacon at Shantz Mennonite Church, Baden. He farmed near Baden for the past 29 years. He was born Nov. 21, 1896, at Lexington, Ont., son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Enos Hunsberger. He married Mary Cressman Jan. 24, 1923, in Wilmot Township. She survives. Also surviving are four sons, Enos, Willis, Floyd and Kenneth of RR 2, Baden; four daughters, Miss Amy, Miss Elsie, Miss Erma and Miss Mary of RR 2, Baden, and two sisters, Mrs. Dilman Snyder of Waterloo and Mrs. Edmund Cressman of New Hamburg. The body was at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home, Kitchener, and was removed to the residence today. A private service will be held at the residence Tuesday at 2: 30 p.m., followed by a public service at Shantz Church, Baden, at 3 p.m. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Rev. Mrs. Edmund Cressman. 69 New Hamburg, died Sunday in St Mary's Hospital. Kitchener.

She was born in Wilmot Township the former May Hunsberger. a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs Enos Hunsberger. She and her husband farmed at RR4 New Hamburg until 1960 when they retired to New Hamburg.

She was a member of Biehn Mennonite Church, Wilmot Township. Her husband died in 1964.

Surviving are two sons, Leonard and Orval, both of RR I, New Hamburg: four daughters. Mrs. John (Mildred) Nafziger. RR 2. Baden. Mrs. Howard (Gladys) Cressman. RR 1 New Hamburg; Mrs. Edgar (Verna) Gingerich. RR 2 Zurich: Miss Pearl, at home; one sister. Mrs. Nora Snyder. Preston; 15 grandchildren.

The body was at the Bruce J. Omand funeral home. New Hamburg, until noon Wednesday, when removal was made to Biehn Mennonite Church for service at 3 p.m. Burial followed in the church cemetery

Alene was born December 17, 1919 in Waterloo, the only child of the late John and Carrie (Erb) Shantz. She had been a resident at the Royal Terrace in Palmerston since February, 2009. Predeceased by her beloved husband, Howard Jewitt in 2001. Predeceased by sister-in-law, Florence Snider; brother-in-law, Ervin Jewitt and sister-in-law, Shirley Jewitt. Alene was given a very special gift of writing, whether it was letters, or puppet scripts, or writing and directing a play for the Pennsylvania German Historical Society. She was a member of the Rummelhardt Women's Institute and an active member of the Erb Street Mennonite Church Ladies group before moving north to the Moorefield area in 1986. Alene was a very gifted leader, an avid reader, and had a keen interest in current events and the political arena of the world. She enjoyed keeping up with the lives of her children as well as her grandchildren and was very blessed with her great-grandchildren. Relatives and friends are invited to share memories of Alene during visitation at Erb Street Mennonite Church, 131 Erb St. W., Waterloo on Sunday, August 23 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. where the funeral service will be held on Monday, August 24, 2009 at 11 a.m. Interment to follow at Erb Street Cemetery. Pioneering spirit

Alene Jewitt

Alene Jewitt was born of a pioneering Mennonite spirit so when she packed up the last suitcase at her family homestead in 1986, the sturdy little grey haired woman was saying goodbye to 180 years of Erb family history.

"The farm was owned by her great grandfather since 1832," said son, Don Jewitt. "Her grandfather built the house."

The Waterloo farm was one of the last of the original working farms in the German Company Tract, an area now filled with subdivisions though the original farmhouse received a last minute reprieve from the wrecking ball. Alene must have been delighted the old place would not be lost, a place that had been home to generations of Erbs.

An only child, Alene's father died when she was only four years old forcing her mother to take charge of the prosperous 167 acre farm and as she matured, Alene would assist.

Don explained "they were really unique, they weren't typical Mennonite women. They were very strong willed."
The women contracted local hired men to do the heavy work and it wasn't until the war years that a more permanent solution arrived on the scene.

Don said his mother often reminisced about the day she peaked out the window and spotted Howard Jewitt strolling toward the barn. There was something about the young man that caught her eye and her heart and she knew immediately, he would never leave the farm.

Howard had been assigned to the farm as a conscientious objector, one of many young men who refused war duty because of their faith and were instead put to work often on farms.

The couple married Aug. 30, 1947, raising four kids on the farm even as urbanization crept closer every year. Howard ran the farm while Alene engaged in countless volunteer activities, including historical research and membership in the Waterloo Historical Society.
Armed with little more than a Grade 8 education - her grandmother's decision based on Mennonite tradition - Alene was always an avid learner and exhibited a real gift for writing. Over the years she crafted stories, created puppet shows, penned long letters and even wrote a play for the Pennsylvania German Historical Society.

"She read a tremendous amount, she loved to read," said Don. As a child, Alene would squirrel away in her closet with a good book, hiding her light long after bedtime. "Her education became what she'd read," Don explained.

Don and his sister Mary Weber, describe their mother as immensely talented, a woman who could do anything, from making puppets to sewing her own clothes and she taught home economics courses at the Women's Institute.
"She did everything well," said Mary.

Though she was not above criticizing a minister's sermon, Alene's church was important to her. "She had a very prominent voice in the church," said Don, noting his mother was the person everyone turned to for leadership. If she saw a problem, Alene would roll up her sleeves and fix it, even if it meant yet one more volunteer job.

As a mother she was practical, always busy, kept a clean house and food on the table and according to Don "she was not your typical homemaker."
Mary said "She didn't show her feelings, there was not a lot of hugging." Don added "she cared about what we did and was always involved." Alene also had an open door policy for neighourhood kids and was a patient, albeit critical listener.

"If you had an opinion opposite of Mom's you had to have it well researched," said Don. If she couldn't support her side of the argument, Alene would ponder it a few days then offer a rebuttal.

In 1967, during Canada's centennial year Alene put all her well honed debating skills to good use. In that year heritage farms across the country were being honoured with a centennial plaque but only if the farm was in the same family name. Alene was furious, challenging what she saw was a sexist attitude. She fought back and won, celebrating by hosting a farm fair at the old homestead. Less than 20 years later, life changed again.

New subdivisions were gobbling up neighouring lands and it was finally time to sell, leaving behind a lifetime of memories.
In a 1985 Record article, Alene explained how her sense of family and history sprang from the hours spent curled beside her bedridden grandmother listening to stories of the early days, when Aboriginal families lived in the nearby bush and the Grand Truck Railway first steamed through the county.

If she was sad to leave this homestead, Alene kept those emotions to herself. She told the reporter she was "a country woman at heart" not comfortable with the city life springing up around her. "I'm ready to go," she said.

Alene and Howard purchased a country property near Arthur. Howard died in 2001 and Alene lived on her own until February, when failing health forced her to move into a nursing home where she died, ending a unique era in Waterloo history.

Mabel is lovingly remembered by many nieces and nephews. Miss Cressman was born in New Hamburg and had been a lifelong resident of the area. Mabel was known for her music and crocheting, she also was an avid reader. NYDER, Erma Born March 31, 1922 in New Hamburg and died January 27, 2011 at Fairview Mennonite Home in Cambridge. Erma was the daughter of the late Addis and Lizzie May Erb Cressman. She was predeceased by her sister Mabel Cressman, her brother Harold and brother-in-law Zenus Cressman. Erma worked at Fairview Mennonite Home in the kitchen where she met widower Orlan Snyder who she married on July 9, 1977. She became step-mother to Aden (Verna) Snyder, the late Hettie (Carl) Sleeper, the late Melinda Utz and her late husband Michael, Mervin (Irene), the late Eileen Snyder, Vera (Stanley) Cressman, the late Cleason (Beatrice) Snyder, the late Laverne (Elisha) Snyder and the late Verna White and her late husband Bill. Orlan and Erma moved into a cottage at Fairview, were able to travel and Erma enjoyed gardening and photography. Erma and Orlan had 9 years together and after his death Erma moved into the apartment tower in Fairview where she was active in the Fairview choir and made many friends. In 2006 when her mobility deteriorated even more, Erma moved into the LTC section of Fairview. Her kind spirit will be missed by many staff who cared for her. Erma will be greatly missed by surviving siblings Eloise Cressman, Willard (Beulah), sister-in-law Lois Cressman and many nieces and nephews and their families. Also lovingly missed by surviving Snyder step-children Aden, Mervin and Vera, 40 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. LEONARD E. SNIDER 1913-2007 Passed away peacefully on Saturday May 12, 2007 at Columbia Forest Long Term Care Centre, 2 days prior to his 94th birthday. Father of Barry and his wife Cheryl of Waterloo and Poppy of Tori and Aaron. Also survived by brother-in-law, Lloyd Scheidel, many nieces, nephews and friends. Predeceased by his wife, Helen (Fleming), 2003; parents, Deldon and Loretta (Erb); brothers, Ron and Eddie and sister, Delores. Len was a lifelong resident of Waterloo and proprietor of Waterloo Stove and Appliances where he got to know and appreciate all of his customers. After he sold in 1976, he had the time to travel extensively spreading his goodwill to all he touched. Len will always be remembered for his love of life and the friendships and fun he had with everyone he met throughout his life. He was a life member of the Waterloo Lions Club and Past District Governor. He cherished and enjoyed his membership as a Mason, Shriner and Jester. He was a 61 year member of Waterloo Lodge No. 539 A.F. & A. M. and charter member of Brotherhood Lodge No. 723 A.F. & A. M. He was the recipient of the prestigious William Mercer Wilson medal in 1989. Member of Kitchener Chapter No. 117 R.A.M. Royal City Lodge of Perfection, Guelph Chapter Rose Croix and Moore Sovereign Consistory - Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite. He contributed in countless ways as a member of Mocha Temple Shriners, Past President Waterloo County Shrine Club, Mocha Motor Corp and Mocha Jeepsters. He travelled throughout North America as a member and ambassador of London Court No. 56 Royal Order of Jesters. He was also a member of First United Church, Waterloo. Many thanks to the staff at Columbia Forest - particularly Eby House for their care and compassion these past four years. Born in Waterloo, Ontario, on January 24, 1922, Fred died at the age of 63 on January 27, 1985. He was baptized and became a member of the Erb Street Mennonite Church of Waterloo. At his death, he was a member of Community Mennonite Church, Harrisonburg,Virginia. Fred was the middle child and only son of Addison and Hilda Weber Erb, both of whom preceded him in death. His sisters, Helen Burkholder, Breslau, Ontario, and Ruth Martin, Cambridge, Ontario, survive. Fred's 91-year-old stepmother, Emma Erb, Cambridge-Preston, Ontario, also survives. Fred was married to Fern Troyer on June 6, 1950. Their three children are Paul, Crossville, Tennessee; Mary Nitzsche, Elkhart, Indiana; Rachel Beckler, Walsenburg, Colorado. Two grandchildren, Erik & Erin Erb, also survive. After graduating from Hesston College in 1947, and Goshen College in 1949, he completed a BRE degree at Goshen College Biblical Seminary in 1950. Just recently he was awarded the Master of Arts in Church Ministries degree from Eastern Mennonite Seminary. Following Fred's ordination to the Christian ministry in Waterloo, Ontario, on August 13, 1950, Fred spent the next 35 years serving the church in various capacities. He pastored five churches: Detroit Mennonite, Detroit, Michigan; Science Ridge, Sterling, Illinois; First Mennonite, Indianapolis, Indiana; United Mennonite, Peoria, Illinois; Aurora Mennonite, Aurora, Ohio. Between pastorates, he served as Director of Admissions at Hesston College, Kansas, and for the past seven years as Associate Director of Alumni/Church/Parent Relations at Eastern Mennonite College & Seminary, Harrisonburg. Fred also served several Mennonite Conferences as youth secretary, conference secretary, and as a member of General Mission Board. He was involved in summer camp ministry at a number of Mennonite Church camps.

MARTIN, Ruth Margaret Died peacefully, at home, in Cambridge, on Tuesday, April 17, 2001, at the age of 76 years. She was the faithful wife of Rev. Paul Martin for 53 years. They have been living in the Fairview Mennonite Home Community, since 1988. Ruth was the mother of five children, Robert and his wife Erma of Toronto, Timothy of Kitchener, Philip and his wife Christine of Kitchener, Betsy and her friend Manee of Thunder Bayand Carolyn and her husband Stanley of Elkhart, Ind. There are seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Ruth was one of three children of the late, Addison and Hilda Erb of Waterloo. She is survived byher sister, Helen Burkholder, also of Fairview Home. Predeceased by her brother, Frederick of Harrisonburg,Va. Ruth will be remembered by many people as the gracious hostess of the pastor's home in five congregations in Southern Ontario. There will be visitation at the Fairview Mennonite Home, 515 LangsDr. in Cambridge, for that community tonight (Wednesday) from 7-9 p.m. This will be followed by visitation at the Edward R. Good Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo, on Thursday, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Cremation will take place after visitation, burial at the Wanner Mennonite Cemetery, Cambridge. A memorial service will be held at Stirling Ave. Mennonite Church, Kitchener, on Saturday, April 21, 2001, at 2: 30 p.m.

Agnes Eileen Brubacher 1917 - 2007 After a long and full life, Agnes died peacefully at Grand River Hospital, on Friday, December 21, 2007, after celebrating her 90th birthday on December 2, 2007. Her family takes great comfort in the knowledge that Agnes is Home at peace with her Lord. For twelve years, home for Agnes was Lanark Place, where she enjoyed the company of other residents and caregivers. Dear mother of Wilfred and his wife Sharon, Richard and his wife Susan of Waterloo and Murray and his wife Beth of Vancouver. WEBER, Joseph Ralph 1922 - 2011 Born in Waterloo, January 31, 1922, living there his whole life. Eldest son of the late Joseph H. Weber and Mary ( Erb) Weber. Brother of Rita Scheifele and Howard and brother-in-law of Betty Weber. Predeceased by sister Agnes Brubacher and brother Leonard. He married Elizabeth Snider, June 1945, daughter of Howard S. Snider and Linda (Becker) Snider, the third daughter with sisters Carol Gimbel, Elaine Yoder, Lucille Weber, Delphine Gingrich, Jean Fitzgerald and brother Howard Jr. He had two loving, caring and devoted daughters, Lynn Wolf - son Chris (wife Beth) and daughter Stephanie, and Sue Ann Conley (husband Jim) and children, daughter Sarah and son Ben. Very special Granddad to four treasured grandchildren and leaving nieces and nephews whom he loved. He attended, joined and was devoted to the Erb Street Mennonite Church all his life.
