    __________________________

William Baker, General Merchant, Northumberland Street - In a town of the size of Ayr the carrying on of a trade in general merchandise is of great importance, and constitutes the principal feature in the mercantile resources of a town not yet dignified into a city. Foremost among those engaged in such a trade here is Mr. William Baker. This gentleman commenced business in 1846, having since built up a splendid trade, which is now by far the largest of its kind carried on in Ayr. Mr. Baker carries a complete line of groceries, of fine quality, country produce, all kinds of garden and agricultural seeds. A large and general stock of hardware is carried, paints and oils; as also of dry goods and boots and shoes. The stock is of excellent quality throughout, and being bought on the most favorable terms, special advantages are afforded to the customer. A specialty is made by this house in the exporting of first-class dairy butter. The large trade carried on by Mr. Baker is constantly increasing, as this house is in a position to offer inducements to the customer which no other house in Ayr can. Mr. Baker, who is a native of Glasgow, Scotland, came out to Canada in 1846, having commenced business almost immediately after his arrival. He is an energetic and thorough man of business, and he is widely known in this community, and is held in high esteem, his business career having been unblemished.

Nearly 3/4 of Century in Ayr

Passing of Mrs. David McColl, the Oldest Resident

The hand of Death has been very heavy in Ayr during the past week or two, during which time several of our oldest residents have been summoned to the Better Land.

Prominent among these is Mrs. David McColl, who passed away on Friday morning after a lingering illness. The deceased's connection with Ayr was unique in that she had resided here continuously for nearly three quarters of a century. She was born in Glasgow, Scotland, and came direct to Ayr in 1816. Her father, the late William Baker, established what is now the Ramsay store in the same year, and it has been in continuous operation ever since.

Mr. Baker did a successful business in Ayr for many years and was succeeded by is son, the late Thomas Baker, and Mr. David McColl. Later Mr. McColl became the sole proprietor. Miss Baker and Mr. McColl were married in 1870.

Seventy-two years is a long time to live in a community. An enumeration of the changes in that time - of the development of the country and the personnel of those who have come and gone again, would fill a volume. Mrs. McColl precured a deep and intelligent interest in everything pertaining to the moral and material welfare of the community. She also identified herself with church work, being an active member of the Presbyterian Denomination.

Mrs. McColl is survived by her sorrowing husband, and a niece, Mrs. John Goldie, who was for many years a beloved member of her household. The funeral on Sunday afternoon was largely attended, interment being made in the family plot in Ayr cemetery. The service at the hose was conducted by Rev. J. J. Brown and at the grave by rev. Dr. Thomson.

    Demise of Nursing Sister Baker

This community very much regrets the death of Margaret E. Baker, daughter of the late Thomas Baker, daughter of the late Thomas Baker and Mrs. Baker, Paris, formerly of Ayr, which event occurred at Private Pavilion, Toronto General Hospital, on Friday, May the 30th, after a short illness.

Miss Baker was born at Ayr, where her father and her grandfather before him were engaged in the mercantile business for many years. Some years ago she qualified as a nurse and when the war broke out enlisted for service overseas, going out with the New York Presbyterian Hospital unit. For sixteen months she saw service in France, returning to Canada last February, bearing high honors, but in poor health. She remained with the army, however, and until her health failed completely was a nursing sister at the Davisville S.C.R. Hospital.

Besides her grief stricken mother, a loving sister also survives.

Interment took place at Ayr on Monday.

Service was held in Christ Church, Rev. Mr. Adamson of Paris officiating.

The procession to the cemetery was headed by a company of returned soldiers and a firing party, while a bugler sounded "The Last Post." At the grave the regulation three volleys were tried, the entire proceedings constituting a very impressive ceremony, and the first military funeral Ayr has ever had. The friends from Paris, as well as many citizens of this community, attended in automobiles, while a large number of people congregated at the cemetery and many wet eyes testified to the esteem in which Sister Baker was held.

The members of the Ayr council attended in a body. Sergt. Heeman of Paris was in charge of the firing party. The following members of the Ayr contingent, nearly all of whom were in uniform, were commanded by Sergt. Geo. Dear, Bert Robson, Jas. Woolsey, F. Turner, H. Griffin, H. Cornford, R. Hawes, T. Hawes, J.T. Gilli?, A. ?, C. E?, H. Fraser, N. ?, W. Griffin?, J. Ronald?. Six Nursing Sisters who had been overseas, two each from Paris, Toronto, ane New York, attended the obsequies. The deceased's name is on the Ayr Public School honor roll, and the school flag was flying at half-mast throughout the day.
