    Former Clerk and Treasurer of Waterloo Township Passes Away in Preston on Sunday.

    Death removed at noon Saturday one of Waterloo County's best known citizens in the person of the late Geo. A. Tilt, former Clerk of Waterloo Township. Deceased was widely known throughout the province both through his business and fraternal connections. He was for many years an employee of the Massey-Harris Company and was actively engaged in the cattlebusiness. In addition, Mr. Tilt was prominent in the I.O.O.F. and A.F. & A.M. Lodges. The late Mr. Tilt, who was in his 70th year, had been in failing health forthe past two years and his death, although it came as a shock to his wide circle of friends, was not entirely unexpected.

    Engaged in Cattle Business

    Mr. Tilt was born at Blair, December 19, 1857. He was, for a period of 35 years employed by the A. O. Wismer Co., of Brantford, now the Massey-Harris Company. During a part of this period he was also in the cattle business associated with Menno Hallman of Roseville and the late John Brown of Galt. After he severed his connection with the Massey-Harris Company, about 1908, Mr. Tilt conducted a cattle business on a more extensive scale, until a few years ago when he retired. Held Clerkship 35 Years

    Mr. Tilt and his father combined to make what is, in allprobability, a record in that, between them, they held the clerkship of the Waterloo Township Council for a period of 65 years, the late G. A. Tilt having been clerkof the Township for 35 years. Prominent in Municipal Affairs in 1918. Mr. Tilt removed his residence to Preston, living in the large stone house now the Memorial Home. Several years ago he moved to his late residence, Dover and William Streets. Since coining to Preston. Mr. Tilt has been prominent in municipal affairs. He was, for a number of years, police magistrate and was also a member of the Park Commission and the Mother Allowance Board at the time of his death. For a number of years he was chairman of the Park Board. Mr. Tilt was a strong Liberal. There survive to mourn his death his widow, two sons, William of Blair and Lloyd of Galt and two daughters, Mrs. Allen Maxwell of Goderich and Miss Ruth at home. There are also three sisters, Mrs. L. Cornell, Preston, Mrs. John Little of Guelph and Mrs. John Ohlman of Chicago. The funeral was held on Tuesday afternoon at Preston where Rev. Mr. Knauff, pastor of the Lutheran church, of which deceased was a member, conducted a simple and impressive service. Interment was made in the Preston cemetery. A large number of friends from various parts of the county, including members of the different township councils and county council, were present to pay their last tribute of respect to the departed. The pall-bearers wereex-Mayor Otto Homuth, ex-Mayor Henry Schultz, Peter Bernhardt, John Werlich, Jacob Mickler and JohnSohrt.

    LLOYD C. TILT DIES AT TORONTO

    Graduate Engineer and Son of Late Geo. Tilt of Preston.

    In 43rd Year. Friends in Preston, Blair and district were grieved to learn of the untimely death of Lloyd Clayton Tilt, B.Sc. F., son of Mrs. Tilt and the late George A. Tilt, former former township clerk, who died at his home, 22 Tudymore Crescent, Toronto, on Friday morning, inhis 43rd year. The funeral services were largely attended on Sunday afternoon, being held under the auspices of the Masonic Order. Rev. W. H. Knauff of St. Peter's Lutheran Church also assisted in the service.The late Mr. Tilt was born in Blair and resided at Pinehurst, near Galt, later going to Toronto University where he graduated in forestry engineering in 1913. Hewas captain of his forestry battalion overseas during the war. Later he held positions in the forestry departments at Winnipeg and Vancauver. For the past few years he was engaged in the real estate business at Toronto. There survive a mother and sister, Miss Ruth Tilt, Preston, his beloved wife, Ella Williams of Mississippi, two sisters, Mrs. Allen Maxwell of Hayfield and Miss Ruth Tilt, Preston. His only brother,Wm. Tilt, former deputy reeve of Waterloo Township, died early this year.

    Ruth L. Tilt

    PRESTON\emdash Ruth L. Tilt, 658 King St., died Saturday at South Waterloo Hospital, Galt. Born at Blair, she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Tilt, and was the last surviving member of her family. She had resided in Preston for 50 years. She was a retired bank clerk. She was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church. Surviving are one nephew and one niece. The body is at the Barthel-Stager Funeral Home where funeral and committal service will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. Interment will be in Preston cemetery.
