    ______________________________

Jacob Zeigler was the eldest son of Abraham and Elizabeth Kolb, and was born in Waterloo Co., Ont., April 12, 1832, about two miles cast of Berlin (now Kitchener). On July 5, 1857, he was united in marriage to Maria, daughter of Elias and Maria (Polly Clemmens) Bowman. To this union were born seven children; Leah, Abram, Elias, Polly (deceased), Simon (deceased), Aaron, and Titus.

He united with the Mennonite Church in early youth, and was a devoted member throughout his long life, being interested and active in all of the work of the Church. In 1875 he was ordained to the office of deacon, in which capacity be served faithfully so long as health and strength permitted. He was a strong supporter and faithful worker in the early Sunday school activities of the Church, having been one of the organizers of the first permanent Sunday schools among our people in Waterloo county. For many years he was the superintendent of the Breslau Mennonite Sunday school. At a time when the Church's attitude toward special and continued efforts for the ingathering of the young people and others was undecided, Brother Kolb was among those who were strongly in favor of such work. Through the encouragement of such brethren efforts were put forth which resulted in a large addition to the active membership of the church. In the following years of increased activities in the Church in behalf of the Sunday schools, Young people's meetings and mission work, Brother Kolb manifested the greatest interest and gave his heartiest support and encouragement.

A number of years ago Bro. Kolb was afflicted with a stroke of paralysis which partly disabled him and from which he never entirely recovered. However, he continued his work in the Church and in his home life until a few years ago when growing infirmity of mind and body, due to recurrent attacks of paralysis, rendered him unable to continue his wonted activities. He keenly realized the weakening of his powers and expressed regret that he was no longer able to take up the duties of his work in the Church, but was always ready to express his joy in the service of the Master and give testimony of his hope in the Lord and in His promises. His strength gradually failed until on June 3, 1919, at the home of his son-in-law, Bro. Moses B. Betzner, where he and his companion had made their home, he calmly fell asleep. He reached the ripe old age of 87 y. 1 m. 21 d.

He lived in matrimony for nearly 62 years, and his aged companion, with four sons and one daughter and twelve grandchildren survive. Besides these children there were two adopted boys, John Zeigler and John Carcy, and two adopted girls, Fannie (Beasley) Pender and Allie (Stengle) Cutter, who with the rest of the family mourn the loss of one who was as a faithful, loving father to them. Brother Kolb is also survived by an aged brother, Menno S. Kolb of Wetaskewin, Alberta, and two aged sisters, Mrs. Nancy Kolb Shantz of Kitchener, Ont., and Mrs. Mary Ann Hoffman of Avondale, Mich. Funeral services were held on the 8th of June. Brother Samuel Bowman conducted the services at the home. At the church at Kitchener, where interment was made, the services were conducted by the Brethren, Jonas Snyder and S. F. Coffman. Texts, Psa. 39: 4; Heb. 4: 9. A large assembly of people testified of the esteem in which the aged servant of the Lord was held and of the sympathy extended toward the bereaved family. Another life has ended on earth and awaits the revelation of the sons of God at the day of the Lord.

    Kolb, Abram B. (1862-1925)

"A. B." Kolb: teacher and publisher; born 10 November 1862 near Berlin (now Kitchener), Ontario to Jacob Z. and Maria (Bowman) Kolb. He was the oldest son in a family of five sons and two daughters. On 3 January 1893 he married Phoebe Funk, the second daughter of John F. Funk . They had two daughters and two sons. Abram died 15 March 1925.
Abram B. Kolb attended the Natchez school (Natchez was a small community now within the city limits of Kitchener, Ontario) and graduated from the Berlin High School. He attended Normal School and taught for four years -- one year in the United States when his pupils were said to include Orville and Wilbur Wright. It was while teaching that he was baptized into the Mennonite Church at the age of nineteen.
In January 1886 Kolb moved to Elkhart, Indiana to become an assistant editor at the Mennonite Publishing Company owned by John F. Funk. He worked there many years in various editorial capacities including editor-in-chief, and was Vice-President of the company until a year before his death. At various times he edited the Words of Cheer and Herald der Wahrheit. He also translated many manuscripts being prepared for publication, among them the Enchiridion of Anabaptist leader Dirk Philips; a translation still widely circulated among the Old Order Amish..
Abram B. Kolb was also a leader when the Mennonite Church began to build mission and educational institutions. He was an early promoter of Sunday school conferences, and served as President of the Mennonite Evangelizing and Benevolent Board until it merged with the Mennonite Board of Charitable Homes and Missions, a predecessor to the Mennonite Board of Missions.
Another passion of A. B. Kolb's was sacred music. He directed many choirs, and served as the first music instructor at the Elkhart Institute (later Goshen College). He wrote a number of hymns used in Mennonite hymnbooks; one still used in Hymnal: a Worship Book was "Christ Who Left His Home in Glory."
After Phoebe's death on 12 March 1918 Abram Kolb's own health declined. He suffered a stroke in June 1923 and became increasingly incapacitated until his death. He was buried in the Prairie Street cemetery in Elkhart, Indiana.
Abram B. Kolb was an important link between US and Canadian Mennonites within the Mennonite Church. Many of his Mennonite Publishing Company co-workers, including John S. Coffman and John F. Funk often visited Ontario, bringing American Mennonite theological influences to the communities in Canada. The Mennonite Publishing Company was a major unifying factor in the Pennsylvania German and Amish Mennonite communities; A. B. Kolb played no small role in that influence.

    Kolb, Aaron C. (1871-1937)

Aaron Clemens "A. C." Kolb: publisher and schoolteacher; born 7 December 1871 at Natchez near Berlin (now Kitchener), Ontario to Jacob Z. and Maria (Bowman) Kolb. He was the second youngest in a family of five sons and two daughters. On 1 January 1899 he married Phoebe Mumaw (4 September 1873-16 July 1960). They had one daughter. Aaron C. Kolb died 15 May 1937 of a heart attack at his home in Kitchener, Ontario.

Kolb attended the Berlin High School with MacKenzie King, later Prime Minister of Canada. In 1889 Aaron Kolb went to Elkhart, Indiana to work at the Mennonite Publishing Company owned by John F. Funk . His older brother, Abram B. Kolb, was already employed there and had arranged the position for Aaron. Aaron became interested in the formation of the Elkhart Institute (later Goshen College), and served as its first Secretary. His future wife, Phoebe, was the daughter of Henry A. Mumaw, the founder and first president of the Elkhart Institute. It was in Elkhart that Kolb made a commitment to the Christian faith, and he was baptized on 21 June 1891 by Bishop Henry Shaum. During his years in Elkhart, A. C. Kolb was active at the Prairie Street Mennonite Church, both in its Sunday school and as a song leader. He contributed some hymns to the Church and Sunday School Hymnal published in 1902 by the Mennonite Publishing Company, and widely used among Ontario Mennonites for the first third of the 20th century..

In 1907, after touring the Canadian West on behalf of the Publishing House, Aaron and Phoebe Kolb moved to Main Centre, Saskatchewan where Aaron was a farmer and schoolteacher. He became the first postmaster of Herbert, Saskatchewan in 1911, a position he held until 1931. They returned to Kitchener, Ontario in the early 1930s to retire and were then active at the First Mennonite Church.

During his final years in Waterloo County, Aaron C. Kolb remained musically active, leading a Mennonite Choral Society that performed widely in the community. Kolb was an important link in maintaining the strong Mennonite musical heritage in the Waterloo County area that later was reflected in groups such as Menno Singers.

    ___________________________

Kolb.--Aaron Clemens Kolb was born near Kitchener, Ont., Dec 7, 1871; died suddenly of a heart attack at his residence in Kitchener, on Saturday morning, May 15, 1937; aged 65 y. 5 m. 8 d. He was a son of Deacon Jacob Z. and Maria (Bowman) Kolb, and from these godly parents he received the teaching that manifested itself in his character in his many activities. When 17 years of age he went to Elkhart, Ind., and took a position with the Mennonite Publishing House, as German correspondent and Manager of the Mail Order Department, where his brother Abram was already employed. While here he became interested in a new venture in the Mennonite Church known as the Elkhart Institute, now Goshen College of which institution he became its first secretary. He was active in the Prairie Street Church and Sunday school, serving as chorister and superintendent of the Sunday school for many years. Also, during these years, he was vitally interested in Sunday school work outside of the regular sessions. At two "outside" points he was assistant superintendent of Sunday school, and at two he was superintendent. This in addition to frequently being leader of the young people's meetings and practically always serving on some committee or committees. It was while superintendent of a Sunday school in northeast Elkhart, where the late Jacob Burkhard was assistant superintendent that the latter yielded to the urge to enter the mission field, and subsequently went to India.
According to a note in the fly leaf of his Bible he accepted Christ as a young man. The note reads as follows:

"Born near Kitchener (formerly Berlin) Ont., Dec. 7, 1871.
    Re-born Jan. 9, 1891, at Elkhart, Ind.
Baptized at Elkhart June 21, 1891, by Bishop Henry Shaum.
Only other person baptized at the same time was Phoebe Mumaw, who on Jan. 1, 1899 became my wife."

Brother Kolb leaves to mourn his sudden departure his wife, 1 daughter (Elmeda), and 2 brothers (Elias B. and Titus L.), all of Kitchener. His parents, 1 brother (Abram), and 1 sister (Leah--Mrs. Moses Betzner) predeceased him.

In 1907 he left for Saskatchewan, where he farmed and taught school. In 1911 he took over the duties of Postmaster in Herbert, Sask., in which capacity he acted until 1931. While in Herbert, he continued to take an active interest in Church, Sunday school, and music. He was a man of varied characteristics and attainments. He was greatly interested in spiritual things, and much concerned about the future prosperity of the Church. He had a definite Christian experience. He believed firmly that the Mennonite Church has a distinctive and important message for all men. He felt that music was one of God's best methods of presenting this message. Perhaps he received most inspiration along spiritual lines from his efforts to help others to sing. He was a man of vision. and often left the impression that he was a step or two ahead of the times in which he lived. When given some task by the Church he was tireless in its performance, even to the impairment of his health. His passing at the age of 65, for one who had been so physically rugged, attests to this fact. He was favored with many friendships and associations that enriched and broadened his life. He was converted under the influence of J. S. Coffman, one of the pioneer Mennonite evangelists, and associated with Bishop J. F. Funk and Dr. H. A. Mumaw who did so much for the work of the Church in Indiana in her early educational struggles.

Funeral services were conducted by Bro. Oscar Burkholder, assisted by Bros. S. F. Coffman and S. M. Kanagy. Text, Col. 1: 18,19. Burial in adjoining cemetery near the church.

"There is a safe and secret place,
    Beneath the wings divine,
    Reserved for all the heirs of grace;
    O be that refuge mine.
    A hand almighty to defend,
    An ear for every call,
An honored life, a peaceful end,
And heaven to crown it all."

    Notes:

"In the year of our Lord 1857, the tenth month and the tenth day, a tiny baby was born, weiqhinq three pounds fully dressed. The hands were so small that the nurse slipped her finqer ring over them to the wristfor a bracelet. The nurse was aunt Nancy Kolb, the baby's mothers sister. For months the babe was feed witha spoon. Nursing bottles ware unheard of at thet time. The child was named Nancy Ellen, not in honor of anyone in particular but just to be different. There were Mary Anns and Lydianna, Lizanns, Sarah\emdash Amos and Nancy Anns, but there were no Ellens in the whole relationship.

So the little stranqer was named Ellen. The qrand parents on both sides were Mennonites by faith and the forelqn and almost heathen name of Ellen could hardly be endured. Puttinci Nancy , a good reliable family name before it toned it down. The grand dames said by always saying Nancyellen, it was not so bad, but the father recorded only Ellen in the family book.

The birthplace of Nancy Ellen was in a very small town in Ontario, Canada, known as the toll bridge. So named because of the new bridge across the river. The bridge was being paid for by the toll each one had to pay when crossing. A few houses, a small store and a few other small places of business made up the little village. A large barn like farmhouse bordering on the town was the exact spot where Nancyellen was born. Her father was teaching school in a nearby country school. This farm was not the real home of the Bowman family. A few rooms ware rented only for the school year, The permanent home was in the little berg of Breslau. The family at this time consisted of Albert and Abram. Angeline, the first daughter, died at the age of ten months and was buried in the Mennonite cemetary near the town of Berlin. The father, Jacob C.Bowrnan, second son of Elias and Polly Bowman taught school a number of years. He made brooms during vacation in company with Elias Snider, the owner of the big farmhouse and brother-in-law of Jacob C. Bowman. They sold the brooms in Preston and other small cities.

    __________________________

Mary Elizabeth Kolb Derstine: teacher, pastor's wife; b. 11 August 1901 on her grandparents' farm near Breslau, Ontario, Canada to parents Elias Kolb (3 March 1865-8 July 1848) and Lucinda (Betzner) Kolb (5 September 1865-18 September 1937). Mary was an only child. On 5 July 1927 she married bishop and evangelist Clayton F. Derstine of Kitchener and became an instant mother to his three daughters. The couple had four children together. Mary died 11 March 1971 in Kitchener.

Although born in Ontario, Mary grew up on the Saskatchewan prairie, where her parents went to homestead in 1904. There she learned to handle horses and guns. By the time that drought forced her family to return to Ontario, Mary was a schoolteacher in her early 20s-an attractive, lively young woman. This was a time of controversy at First Mennonite Church in Kitchener. The issue was whether to make it compulsory for women to wear the bonnet. Due to this controversy, a group of people left to form the Stirling Avenue Mennonite Church. In the midst of this turmoil, Mary made a commitment to Christ and chose to worship at First Mennonite Church, where a woman's commitment was defined by a strict dress code. She was baptized there in 1925 by her pastor, C. F. Derstine, whose wife died a few months later. C. F. and Mary were married in July 1927.

A gracious and dignified pastor's wife, Mary allowed no gossip, either at home or at church. She was a role model to other women in her cheerful acceptance of plain clothing....

Recover Body Of Drowned Hockey Player
Charles "Babe" Siebert Drowned In Lake Huron Last Friday

The body of Charles "Babe" Siebert, widely known professional hockey star who was drowned last Friday afternoon in Lake Huron at St. Joseph was located about 40 feet from where he sank in 10 feet of water. The body was discovered by his brother (Frank of Detroit and Albert Hess, of Zurich, after dragging had been continued for three days.

Siebert, 34 years of age, was a son of Mr. and Mrs. William Siebert, of Zurich. He was home in Zurich where a reunion of the family was to be held on Sunday.

Shortly before 4 p. m. Siebert with his two daughters, Judie, 11, and Joan, 10, went with Clayton Hoffman, of Zurich, to the lake.

They went in bathing at St. Joseph. When one of the children saw the inflated tire was using for a float carried out from her depth by waves that were rolling she asked her father to recover it.

Siebert swam out and was about to grab the tire which had floated about 150 feet from shore and around the end of the pier, when he shouted for help.

Hoffman swam out to go to his assistance but he sank 'before Hoffman arrived at the spot.

"Babe" Siebert was born in Plattsville in 1904, but his family had resided in Zurich since he was a lad, and he was always regarded as a "Zurich boy."

He got his start in both hockey and baseball in Zurich, then played at -Seaforth and on the Kitchener junior O. H. A. team. Later he played for Niagara Falls and then turned professional with Montreal Maroons in 1925, remaining with that team until 1932 when he was traded to New York Rangers.

In the 1933-34 season he was traded to Boston Bruins and moved back to defense from right wing. He, along with his defence partner, Eddie Shore, was picked for the N. H. L. all-star team in the season of 1935-36. He repeated in the 1936-37 and 1937-38 seasons. During the summer of 1936 he was traded to Les Canadiens.

Only recently he was named coach-manager of the team.

The funeral was held in Kitchener on Wednesday afternoon.

The late hockey star was married to Berne Millhausen, of Kitchener, who survives him with two young daughters, besides his parents and several brothers and sisters.
