"A.L.SHANTZ, EX-DAIRY MAN, PASSES

Former proprietor of Rosemount Dairy, Abram L. Shantz, 168 Cameron St. North, died today at his home, after a lengthy illness. He was 87.

Born Dec. 15, 1860 (sic) in Maryborough Township, he was the last surviving member of the family of the late Josiah Shantz and former Nancy Kolb. Before moving to Kitchener Mr. Shantz farmed near Heidelberg. He was a member of Bethany United Missionary Church.

Mr. Shantz was predeceased by his first wife, the former Emma Hallman, onMay 1, 1919, and by his second wife, the former Magdalene Brubacher, on Dec. 27, 1938.

Surviving besides his third wife, the former Helen Wildfong, whom he married in 1945, are a son, Dr. Leighton O. Shantz, Flint, Mich.; three daughters, Mrs. Gordon (Rhea) Bretz, Ayr; Mrs. Luman (Mary) Reist, Kitchener; Mrs. Melvin (Lorene) Bickle, Breslau; two step children, Mrs.Ross Gilders, Kitchener; William Wildfong, Waterloo, and 13 grandchildren....First Mennonite Cemetery..."

Historic Building:
Jacob Kolb contructed this house now demolished some time after 1981. It started out as a small log house, later a room the full length of the house was added and a new roof applied. Logs were covered with frame and the hold house was stuccoed. It was passed down from Jacob to Tobias then to Joseph. In 1932 Abraham Lincoln Shantz bought the property

Notes:

In the 1870s there was not much entertainment. In the winter revival services provided most of the excitement. These meetings would last six or seven weeks. Mr. Orpheus Shantz recalled a frame carriage shed which also stood near the Methodist Church in Hawkesville where myriads of bats congregated. Small boys delighted in beating the walls with sticks during the daytime, and then watching the bats fly out in swarms.

Orpheus M Schantz was the first born of Tobias & Mary Schantz, he left Conestogo to live with Mary's brother in Iowa in 1881. He was a regular visiter to his family home on Schneider Avenue in Berlin/Kitchener. An artist & expert naturalist, he often recorded events on bracket fungi he collected on woodland walks. Orpheus etched a snowy scene with evergreen trees. He wrote on the margin, "January 1, 1922, First visit by Orpheus in winter since leaving home October 1881." He included the family names including his great niece Dorothy. This curio and several similar decorated fungi were stored in the attic of the Schantz/Russell home until the last decade when it was donated to the Waterloo Region Museum.

WHITE - On the 5th of May, 1900 at the residence of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Tobias Shantz, Etta, wife of Ward White, in her 34th year. They had lived at Leamington, Ont., since their marriage in September, 1897, and up to within a short time of her decease when the husband left for Didsbury, Alberta, Canada, to prepare a home for them while the deceased came to spend the summer with her parents and friends before following her husband to the Northwest. Within a week after her arrival a child was born and a few days afterward the young mother suddenly began to sink and soon passed away. Owing to the great distance it was impossible for the husband to attend the funeral of his beloved companion which took place from her father's residence to the Alma St. U. B. church, Berlin, Ont. The remains were laid to rest in Mount Hope cemetery. She leaves her husband, an infant child, parents, brothers and sisters and many warm friends to mourn her early death, yet they mourn not as those who have no hope, for she had made the wise choice years ago and she was prepared when the summons came. God comfort the bereaved hearts in this hour of affliction.

Frank Schantz worked in the dry goods business, becoming a shareholder in the firm of Lang Tracey. A bachelor, having a "built-in family," he was civic minded, serving on the Kitchener Public School Board, the orphanage board and the board of the YMCA.

A man long active in Kitchener community life, Franklin Schantz, 88, of 43 Schneider Ave. died Monday at K-W Hospital. He was born Jan. 12, 1874, at Hawkesville, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Tobias Schantz, and lived eight years in Conestogo before moving to Kitchener. He retired in 1931 from the T. Eaton Company Ltd., and was employed by the Kitchener Public Utilities Commission for about 15 years. Mr. Schantz was a member of Alma Street United Brethren in Christ Church, where he sang with the church choir. He was a member of the Harwood Bible Class. He served from 1933-1940 on Kitchener Public School Board, and in 1940 retired as secretary of the K-W Orphanage Board after 24 years. He was an active member of the K-W Philatelic Association, a member of the Waterloo Historical Society and a charter member of the K-W Field Naturalist Society. Mr. Schantz also served with the Boys Work Committee of the YMCA and also did nature study work at Paradise Lake Camp. He was unmarried. Four brothers and three sisters predeceased him. A niece and two great-nephews survive.

Shantz: Dr. Homer LeRoy Shantz, 82, notable father of Ben Shantz,prominent Silver City attorney, died Sunday, June 22, in Rapid City, South Dakota, of a heart attack. He was a frequent visitor at the home of his son here in recent years, the last visit being two weeks ago. At the time of his death he was actively engaged in a resurvey of the vegetation of the Northern Great Plains, a project sponsored by the University of Arizona, together with Prof. Walter S. Phillips, head of the Department of Botany. Dr. Shantz was born in Kent County, Michigan, Jan. 24, 1876. Hewas educated at Colorado College in Colorado Springs and the University of Nebraska. Thereafter he worked in the Bureau of Plant Industry of the U. S. Department of Agriculture for many years. He was professor of botany at the University of Illinois and president of the University of Arizona from 1928 to 1936, with an outstanding record as an educator during which the university made great progress. From 1936 to his retirement in 1944, he was the Chief of the Forest Service. But he never actually retired. Dr. Shantz made three extended trips through Africa and was the author of many articles on the soils and vegetation of Africa and of the Western United States. Fame International Dr. Shantz, internationally know plant geographer, ecologist, author and educator, received the outstanding achievement award for 1953 of the Associtation of American Geographers. The award was presented at the Association's 50th anniversary meeting in Philadelphia. In 1957, he recieved the National Society Botanical Award. In the geographic field, Dr. Shantz was best known for his map of native vegetation types in the United States. <sup>1

Obituary

The Late Roy Shantz

Friends in Kitchener, Waterloo and district attended the funeral of the late Roy Shantz at Kitchener on Thursday afternoon. Service was conducted by Rev. Mr. Logan of Trinity United Church at Schreiter's Funeral Home. The Masonic Lodge Brethren of which deceased was a member also assisted in the service Representatives of various organisations of which deceased was a member attended. Interment was made in Woodland Mausoleum.

The honorary pall bearers were: Hon. W. D. Euler, Judge Clement, Mayor H. W. Sturm A R. Kaufman and H. J. Sims, all of Kitchener and J. Finley of Toronto, president and manager of the United Paper Mills, Ltd., and J. Palmor, president and manager of the Toronto Type Foundry.

The active pall bearers were Edward Wismer, Edward Wackett, Fred McKellar, William Outpell, Oscar Thompson and Arthur H. Lowe.


A divine selection was sung by a masonic trio, "Remember Now Thy Creator." Originally this was a maconic quartet, the late Mr. Shantz being a member. The remaining members are G. McPhail, Ralph Connor and W. A. Jones.

Miss Shantz's family will receive friends at the Edward R. Good Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo, from 7-9 p.m. this evening (Monday) and on Tuesday from 10 a.m. 12 noon. The funeral and committal service will be held in the chapel of the funeral home, Tuesday at 2 p.m., with Rev. Colin Meikle officiating. Interment in First Mennonite cemetery, Kitchener.

Of 1289 Fairview Rd., Cambridge. on Sunday, April 12,1992, at Cambridge Memorial Hospital, in his 82nd year. Beloved husband of Violet Foster; dear father of William and his wife Joyce of Kitchener, Glen and his wife Karen of Bloomingdale and Richard and his wife Sharon of Cambridge. Lovingly remembered by seven grandchildren, Alan, Jennifer, David, Heather, Heidi, Ryan and Stacy, Janice and Brian; three brothers, Carl and Robert, both of Kitchener and Jack of Toronto and one sister, Mrs. Catherine Archer of Hamilton. Mr. Kimmel was born in Kitchener and moved to Cambridge (Preston) in 1945. He was a member of St. Paul's United Church and a London Life representative for 39 years, retiring in 1975. The family will receive friends at the Barthel Funeral Home, 586 Queenston Rd., Cambridge, Tuesday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral and committal services will be conducted by Rev. Peter Wesley on Wednesday, April 15, 1992, at St. Paul's United Church, King Street, Cambridge, at 2 p.m. Cremation following. Interment of cremated remains to follow at Memory Gardens, Breslau.

Orpheus M Schantz was the first born of Tobias & Mary Schantz, he left Conestogo to live with Mary's brother in Iowa in 1881. He was a regular visiter to his family home on Schneider Avenue in Berlin/Kitchener. An artist & expert naturalist, he often recorded events on bracket fungi he collected on woodland walks. Orpheus etched a snowy scene with evergreen trees. He wrote on the margin, "January 1, 1922, First visit by Orpheus in winter since leaving home October 1881." He included the family names including his great niece Dorothy. This curio and several similar decorated fungi were stored in the attic of the Schantz/Russell home until the last decade when it was donated to the Waterloo Region Museum.

In 1900 Etta Schantz, now Etta White, her husband Ward and two Schantz brothers decided to homestead near Didsbury Alberta. Etta came to Berlin to have her baby, Dorothy, but she died of complications. Dorothy White was brought up by her extended Schantz family, principally her Uncle Frank, whose name appears on the fungus.

Dorothy Russell Inducted into Hall of Fame

On Sun. Apr. 28, 2019, an honour was bestowed on one of our own. That was the day longtime WRN member, Dorothy Russell, was inducted into the Ken Seiling Waterloo Region Museum Hall of Fame under the category of Community Service. Dorothy Etta White was born on April 26, 1900 in Berlin, Ontario, in the Schantz family ancestral home originally built in 1888, on land purchased from Sam Schneider - grandson of pioneer Joseph Schneider. In her 105 years, almost entirely lived in this home, Dorothy had an impact on many lives. She was a mother, teacher, historian and amateur photographer. She painted, kept journals and diaries, and wrote hundreds of letters. She was an active member of the Waterloo Historical Society. But it is her love of nature and membership in our club which is the focus here.

Love and respect for nature came early to Dorothy. With the death of her mother in 1900, her grandparents and aunts and uncles assumed her care. It was Uncle Frank, in particular, who took her under his wing. Uncle Frank Schantz was a naturalist and, when Dorothy was a young girl, they would regularly set out early on May mornings and walk to nearby Victoria Park or Waterworks (Lakeside) Park to identify migrating warblers. By the age of eight, she was making her own bird checklists. Her Uncle Orpheus Schantz of Chicago was a famous naturalist and president of the Illinois Audubon Society. He, too, encouraged her interest in the outdoors.

In 1934, Uncle Frank became one of the original founders of the KWFN. Dorothy's best friend, Viola Snyder (later Hanson), was also a founder. It was in 1946 when Uncle Frank assumed the presidency of the club that Dorothy took out formal membership. And she remained a member for the rest of her life.

Dorothy played an active role in the club. She was a regular at meetings and outings. Archival photos show her at close-to-home outings such as Hidden Valley, Dickson Wilderness and Pioneers Tower. As well, she enjoyed traveling further afield to Tobermory and Point Pelee. Dorothy also took on responsibilities with the club. In the 1960s, she was in charge of ticket sales for the Audubon Screen Tour shows presented at KCI and other venues throughout KW. These shows raised thousands of dollars toward the first purchases of land sanctuaries by the club including the Dickson Wilderness Area, Wrigley Lake and Bannister Lake. Dorothy also volunteered for two stints on the Board of Directors: from 1953-56 and again from 1968-72.

But she seemed to have a particular passion for the annual Christmas Bird Counts. After earning her driver's license at the age of 57, she became a youth mentor and driver, never missing a CBC, as was acknowledged when she received the club's Life Membership Award on her 86th birthday. She was given this award for her long and faithful association with the club. Inscribed on the award were the words, "As she treasures nature, so we treasure her."

With the turn of the millennium, as Dorothy celebrated her 100th year, the KWFN acknowledged her century of achievement - including bringing the joy of the outdoors to people - by planting a Red Oak tree in Victoria Park behind the newly-installed park bench donated in her honour. The dedication plaque on the bench reads: "Dorothy Russell, 1900- 2000, Friends and Neighbours." It is still there for anyone to see and rest upon.

In 2001, she was honoured with the rarely given 50+ pin Ontario Volunteer Service Award. Her name had been put forward by the club.

It wasn't that Dorothy had set impossible records or achieved bold accomplishments. It was rather thashe lived life with verve and delight. She served and was a mentor to many. But also because she left behind an extraordinary record which spanned more than a century. In 1996, two years after the restoration of the family home, Dorothy, and Harold and Lynne Russell entered into an agreement with the University of Waterloo to donate the substantial paper archive which had accumulated in their attic.

This collection consisted of thousands of letters, over 800 books, diaries, clippings, maps, assorted ephemera and especially Dorothy's photographs organized in 13 albums. These materials revealed the life stories of a local family of eight children and their descendants in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. They provided a resource on the history of the family members and the wider community. Without Dorothy's preservation of this collection, it, like many others, would have been lost. Waterloo Region Nature has also benefitted from Dorothy's birding records, specifically her 35mm slide photographs. Some of these were donated by her son, Harold, to our own club archives which now reside in the Region of Waterloo Archives located in the historic courthouse building in downtown Kitchener. These photographs are available to anyone for research and study purposes.

Dorothy Russell had an impact on many individuals and organizations in Waterloo Region. And, with these donated materials, her impact will continue for many more years to come. So, drop by the Waterloo Region Museum sometime, go to the second floor mezzanine, and view the Dorothy Russell display case. Check out the items there including the old Kodak Brownie camera which took so many of her memorable photos. And, if you're in Victoria Park, have a little sit on her bench. Take a few moments to drink in the beauty and serenity of the surroundings. Consider that Dorothy's personal gift to you. 2023.

Shantz: Ben Shantz, a Silver City attorney, passed away on Jan. 2. Mr. Shantz was born in Colorado Springs, Colo., on July l9, l904, the son of Homer L. Shantz and Lucia S. Shantz. He is survived by his widow, the former Mary Jarrold of Tucson, Ariz.; two sons, Norman and Robert Shantz; and a brother, Homer L. Shantz Jr., of Coronado, Calif. Mr. Shantz was educated at Swarthmore College, the University of Illinois and University of Arizona, where he received his law degree in l933. He practiced in Tucson and El Paso, Texas, prior to coming to Silver City in l942. He was also admitted to practice in the District of Columbia and before the Supreme Court of the United States of America. He retired from active practice in l979. Mr, Shantz was a director of the New Mexico Mining Association for many years, and of the American Natinal Bank. He was president of the Silver City Rotary Club in l946, and was chairman of the Southwestern Section of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers in l956. Graveside services will be conducted at the Silver City Cemetery with only the immediate family present.<sup>1
