    DANIEL L. KNECHTEL.

He was born in the province of Rhein, Bavarian, Prussia, on December 11, 1845. His father, the late Jacob Knechtel, emigrated from his native land to New York City some time in the year 1856. After a residence of ten years in that city be moved with his family to Mannheim, where he was for many years engaged as a cabinet maker. To this trade Daniel L. was also apprenticed. When his father retired from business he took charge of the saw mill, for some time previous operated by Aber Bricker, and operated it for a period of about fifteen years. After this he removed to Berlin where for a year or two he was employed in J. Y. Shantz's button factory.

On February 25, 1868, Mr. Knechtel was married to Susanna Toman, who was born in Waterloo township on Jan. 20, 1847. The birth results of this union are five children, as follows: Albert, born in Mitchell, Perth county, November 7, 1869; Allan, born in Mannheim, September 30, 1871; William Henry, born in Mannheim, February 29, 1876; Jacob, born in Mannheim, October 6, 1879; Laura Elma, born November 6, 1884. The children are all grown up.

In 1893 Mr. Knechtel discontinued working as a mechanic and took up agricultural pursuits. He purchased lot No. 5, 100 acres, formerly owned by Wendel E. Shantz, being located about a half mile north of Bleam's road and one mile west of Mannheim. Though it was his first attempt at farming he has been thoroughly successful. But he was fortunate in having a devoted and industrious wife who was inured to farm life, she having been reared to womanhood on a farm. Mr. Knechtel, however, is a gentleman possessed of considerable practical intelligence and ripe experience, and for that reason is not handicapped in anything he undertakes. His mature mechanical knowledge in the line of carpentering and familiarity with machinery is of splendid assistance to him as a farmer, for when a fence needs repairing or a building repaired, or a new one erected, he is fully competent to perform the job without extra assistance from outside, unless it is required in the raising of a large structure.

Allan, the second eldest son, is also engaged on the farm. He has a wife and two children and lives with the parents in the family residence. Allan is a stalwart young fellow and takes to farming very naturally, as he appears to understand it somewhat thoroughly. The fine, thriftylooking lot of hogs he is feeding is amply sufficient to substantiate the latter assertion. Horses and other animals about the premises show that they are kindly treated and well fed, and there appears to be an abundance of feed.

What the writer was in particular pleased to observe while sojourning for a night at this hospitable home was the quiet harmony and kind courtesy predominating between parents and son and daughter-in-law, all living under the same roof. The little off spring of the latter seems to be the tie that binds all in one indissoluble family union, for the grandmother, a kind and generous-hearted woman, tolerates in these innocent little ones what some irritable species of female would consider annoyance. But in this happy family circle harsh words are conspicuously absent, and he who happens to enter within its sacred precincts finds nothing to grate harshly upon one of nervous temperament and humane instincts. The parents are members of the Mennonite church and within their home predominate true christian principles as taught by that faith. My visit to this place is one among those I will fondly remember. The young people are members of the Lutheran church.

FLASH FROM THE PAST: Victoria Park's first 'comfort station'

    By Jon Fear

Early visitors to Victoria Park in Kitchener somehow did without public washrooms for the first 14 years of the park's existence.

But in 1910 when the town of Berlin (soon to be renamed Kitchener in 1916) got around to building them, it took pains to do a first-rate job.

"Finest of its Kind in Canada," a Berlin News Record headline said on June 7, 1910. "New Comfort Station One of the Most Complete in Canada," the Berlin Daily Telegraph agreed....The building's architect was Charles Knechtel. He also designed the original Victoria Park pavilion, which was destroyed by fire in 1916.

A newspaper account from 1910 describes the comfort station building as having the shape of a Maltese cross and featuring an interior with terrazzo flooring, enamelled brick walls and an ornamental metal ceiling.

"The building is divided into two compartments, one for men, the other for women. The latter has a large rest room in connection, splendidly equipped with mission furniture, easy chair, rockers and coach and a writing table. The furniture for this is from the Krug factory and cost $85."....

KNECHTEL, Charles (1869-1951), son of Jonas Knechtel of Berlin, was born in Mannheim, Waterloo County, Ont. on 22 November 1869 and attended Central School in Berlin (now Kitchener). He did not receive a formal education in architecture but instead gained his knowledge of design and construction from his father whom he worked with from 1886 until the death of the latter in 1894. Knechtel then opened his own office in Berlin in 1895 and continued to practise there until after 1930. He died in Kitchener on 5 October 1951 (obituary in the Kitchener-Waterloo Record, 5 Oct. 1951, 7; inf. Ontario Association of Architects). The Region of Waterloo Archives in Kitchener, Ont. holds a collection of over 800 original drawings by Jonas Knechtel and by Charles Knechtel dating from 1893 to 1943 (Fonds - JCK Coll.).

    Notes:

Frederick Douglas Snyder 1920 - 2005 On Friday, June 3, 2005, Fred, still full of curiosity, entered into his final adventure. He received his wish for a peaceful crossing over, in his own bed, surrounded by his family. He will be deeply missed by his dear Lorraine and his children, Karen Snyder, Nan and Doug Cressman and Bev and Donnie Moores. Fred was a wonderful grandpa to Martha Snyder, Sarah and Paul Cressman, Talitha May, Stacey Weber and Charis Moores, as well as his great-grandchildren. Fred's lifelong concern for others found expression in many ways. His teaching career spanned all levels of education, from Suddaby Public School, through many years in Guidance at KCI and into the founding years of Conestoga College. His commitment to others was also demonstrated by community involvement with groups such as Y's Men, Canadian Mental Health Association, Canadian Council of Christians and Jews, Habitat for Humanity, House of Friendship, RAISE and Mennonite Central Committee. Midlife was a time of deepening transformation for Fred. Early retirement also allowed him the freedom to invest more fully in issues of global concern. In the second half of his life, Fred worked for peace through Project Ploughshares, Veterans Against Nuclear Arms and Conscience Canada. Fred's Christian faith, undergirding all he did, was supported over his lifetime by his membership in Zion United Church, K-W Housechurches and Olive Branch Mennonite Church. A memorial service celebrating Fred's life will be held at the Edward R. Good Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo, on Saturday, June 11, 2005, at 3 p.m. with Reverend Oz Cole-Arnal officiating. A reception will be held following the service in the Fireside Reception Room of the funeral home. A private family interment has taken place. In Fred's memory, donations may be made to Mennonite Central Committee or Habitat for Humanity, Waterloo Region. Condolences/Donations/Flowers www.edwardrgood.com 745-8445

    THE RECORD - Jun. 6, 2005

    __________________________

Fred Snyder from Ontario also signed up with the Canadian air force in 1941, went overseas, and served as a radar mechanic. For him the reality of war was restricted in the early years to impersonal blips on a radar screen. But after VE Day he saw the bombed-out German cities and said: 'We moved into Germany and I can recall ... Dueren, a town the size of Kitchener at that time, a beautiful place, but as we approached, it seemed ... it was just a pile of rubble one storey deep ... The stench of the dead, five months later, was sickening. We were bombing very precisely and just slaughtering that whole population. Canadians, British and Americans were doing this! That's when I first sensed that it was sickening on both sides, that we were not better than the Germans." When he set out in 1941 Snyder believed that it was his patriotic duty to serve. But he said later that when a person enlists, `You park your brains at the door and you change overnight ... In the military you don't think, you just follow instructions." After the war, he became a peace activist.

    Notes:

Frederick William Knechtel passed away March 3, 2001 in his 98th year. He was born July 19, 1903 in Petersburg, Ontario, one of five children. The family later moved to nearby Kitchener. A cabinet maker by trade, he was employed by Malcom and Hill Ltd. to design and build radio cabinets. He later formed his own company manufacturing some of the earliest trailers. In 1936 he sold his company to Canada Carriage & Body Ltd. of Brantford and was hired to supervise this part of their business. In 1938 the company became Brantford coach & Body Ltd. With the outbreak of the Second World War, production was geared to building military vehicles and Fred Knechtel was appointed Factory Manager, a position he held until retiring from the company in 1958. During this period he was a key figure in the design of the "Brant Chief" line of all aluminium tractor trailers, a first in the industry. Upon leaving coach and Body, he formed the woodworking business known as Knechtel bros. Ltd. which is still in operation today. F.W.'s son Donald and his son James Knechtel continue the tradition of fine quality woodworking to this day. He spent his retirement years wintering in Florida and his summers in Ontario. He has been a resident of Charlotte Villa for the past ten years. He is survived by two son, Donald (and wife Kate) of St. Williams, Ontario, Frederick (and wife Betty) of Port Dover; three daughters, Jean (Mrs. Alan Goodwin) of Cleveland, Ohio, Joyce (Mrs. Donald White) of Stoney Creek, Ontario, and Doreen (Mrs. Howard Tackaberry) of Winnipeg, Manitoba; 16 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. His wife Hilda predeceased him in 1983. Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date.
