Joseph Gillespie

The death occurred suddenly at his home, 90 Blair Road, Galt, on Saturday of Joseph Gillespie, in his 61st year. Mr. Gillespie was born in Ayr where he had spent most of his life. Leaving here some 23 years ago, he lived in Mill Creek for 5 years, and for the past 18 years in Galt. His business as a cattle buyer brought him in contact with a great many people and he was one of the best known men in this part of the County of Waterloo. He was an expert judge of cattle and a popular man. Surviving are his wife and two daughters, Mrs. E. C. Daniels, Toronto, and Sadie, at home. Four brothers, Samuel, Murray and John of Ayr and Norman of Vancouver, and one sister, Mrs. George Smye of Ayr, also survive. The funeral took place on Monday afternoon from his late residence, Galt, to the Ayr Cemetery.

S. W. Gillespie Passes

One of Ayr's Oldest Business Men Succumbs to Heart Ailment On Friday

The death occurred in Galt Hospital on Friday, of one of Ayr's oldest business men in the person of Samuel Wallace Gillespie, aged 72 years. Mr. Gillespie was born in Ayr, the son of Joseph Gillespie and Marion Wallace, early Scottish settlers of this village. He had been confined to the hospital for a period of two months with a heart ailment, his condition taking a turn for the worse on Wednesday. In his younger days he followed the trade of paint and decorator, in which business his father engaged. He later took a course in the Business College after which he opened a grocery and provision store in the present stand. This business he conducted successfully for a period of over 35 years. Mr. Gillespie was a shrewd business man and his dealings with the public were always fair and above board. He was widely known and esteemed by a large circle of friends who will learn of his passing with regret. Some 40 years ago Mr. Gillespie was famed as one of the best checker players in the province, and he wrote and had published a book dealing with the finer points of the game. He is survived by one sister and two brothers, as follows: Mrs. George C. Smye, Murray and John. His wife predeceased him several years ago.

The Funeral

The funeral, which took place on Monday afternoon from his late residence, Northumberland St., Ayr, was largely attended. Rev. J. W. Currie, pastor of Knox United Church, conducted the service, and the pallbearers were: James Bell, George Easton, Joseph Gordon, Henry Wolfe James Rutherford and Alex Matheson. Interment was in Ayr Cemetery.

Murray Gillespie Passes Well - Known Painter and Decorator Had Been in III Health for Over a Year

Another lifelong resident, of Ayr passed away on Saturday in the person of George Murray Gillespie, in his 66th year. Mr. Gillespie had been suffering with a heart ailment for over a year and his passing was not unexpected.

He was a son of the late Joseph Gillespie and Marion Wallace, and, like his father, followed the trade of painter and decorator. He was noted for the fine work he turned out and his services were always in demand.

Mr. Gillespie attended the Ayr school and the former Stanley Street Sabbath School and church. After the union he attended Knox United Church.

In his younger days, he was quite a sportsman, having a particular fondness for baseball,and hunting.

He had many friends in the community, all of whom will regret to learn of his demise.

Besides his widow, whose maiden name was Mary Holdaway, he is survived by the following children: Mrs. George Hamm. Blyth; Mrs. Wesley Tamon, Blyth; Mrs. Everett Hussey, Roseville; George and Wilbert, serving with the Canadian Forces in England; Norman, with the Canadian Army in Italy; Miss Betty and Wallace, Ayr. Also surviving are a sister, Mrs. George C. Smye, and a brother, John Gillespie, Ayr.

The Funeral.

There was a large attendance at the funeral service held in the W. O. Ball Funeral Parlor on Tuesday afternoon. Rev. R. A. Steed, pastor of Knox United Church, conducted the service, and interment was in Ayr Cemetery. The pallbearers were James Bell, Roland Maeder, Alex McLeod, Sr., Arthur Underwood, William Watkins and Edward Freer. The floral tributes were many and beautiful.

The community was saddened on Sunday by the death of Mrs. George C. Smye at her home in Blenheim township, in her 69th year. She had been in failing health for the past 18 months. Born in Ayr, she was a daughter of the late Joseph Gillespie and Marion Wallace. Prior to removing to her late residence in Blenheim, following her marriage in 1921, she taught piano to a number of music students. Mrs. Smye was a valued member of Knox United Church and took an active part in the Women's Association and King's Daughters' Auxiliary. Surviving, besides her husband, are two stepsons, George, at home, and Lloyd, in Galt. Four grandchildren and a brother, John, at home, also survive. The Funeral The funeral was held from her late residence on Tuesday afternoon, with Rev. W. D. Goodger officiating, The pallbearers were: H. C. Schlichter, George Stockton, Joseph Gordon, Andrew C. Hall, David H. Brown and George Berge. Flower-bearers were five nephews: Wallace, Norman, George and Wilbert Gillespie, Ayr. and Wallace Gillespie, Toronto, along along with Everett Hussey. Interment was made in the Ayr Cemetery.

Mrs. Daniels, formerly of Southern Estates, Blair, died March 15 at Cambridge Memorial Hospital. She was 88. Born in Ayr, she was predeceased by her husband, Ernest C. Daniels; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Gillespie. She is survived by a sister, Saidee Gillespie, of Cambridge. She was a member of Wesley United Church and a devoted worker for many years with the Runnymede United Church, Toronto.

Ayr native, Joseph Wallace (Wally) Gillespie passed away at St. Mary's Hospital, Kitchener on Friday. December 25, 1992. He was in his 82nd year. Mr. Gillespie was the son of the late Murray Gillespie and Mary Holdaway who were also both born in Ayr. A carpenter by trade, he worked at the former Hilborn factory in Ayr which made hockey sticks, at Shirley-Dietrich in Galt, and for over 40 years at the John Watson Mfg. plant in Ayr. Member and officer of Ayr 1.0.0.F. Lodge and later when it closed joined Princeton 1.0.0.F. Lodge No. 307, Princeton. Member of Ayr Masonic Lodge No. 173, and Knox United Church, Ayr. Survived by his wife Olive Sweet; his brothers Norman and John (Bussy) and his wife Alice, all of Ayr; his sisters Elizabeth (Betty) and her husband Irvin Bowes of Blyth and Margaret Tamon of Auburn, Ontario. Predeceased by brother George of Ayr and sisters Sadie Hamm of Blyth and Florence Hussey of Ayr. Funeral service was held at the Ayr Chapel, Wm. The death occurred on Tuesday, April 26, of George Easton GoIdie 92, of Guelph. The late Mr. GoIdie, who was born in Ayr, was a member of one of the district's pioneer families. His father, David GoIdie, was owner of the GoIdie Milling Co. at Greenfield, one of the early flourishing industries in this part the province. Surviving are three sisters: Mrs. F. A. Cleland (Annie), Mrs. D. E. Kilgour (Esther), and Mrs. J. W. Falkner (Theresa), and a brother E. C. (Pat) Goldie, all of Toronto. A private service will be held.

Mrs. Everett Hussey Passes

Mrs. Everett Hussey, a lifelong resident of Ayr, passed away in St. Mary's Hospital, Kitchener, on Monday in her 44th year. She had been in ill health for some time as the result of a heart ailment, but her sudden demise was a distinct shock to mary friends in the community.

The former Florence Mae Gillespie, she was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Murray Gillespie of Ayr. Following her marriage the family resided in the former Gillespie residence on the Cemetery Hill.

The late Mrs. Hussey was a member of Knox United Church. Surviving, besides her husband, are one daughter, Mrs. Nelson (Betty) Hussey of Ayr; five sons. Wayne, Vaughn, James, Roger and Daryl, all at home; three brothers, Wallace, Norman and Wilbert, all of Ayr; three sisters, Mrs. George (Sadie) Hamm, Mrs. Wesley (Margaret) Taman and Mrs. Irvin (Betty) Bowes, all of Blyth, Ont. One grandchild also survives. She was predeceased by a brother, George.

Funeral service was held today (Thursday) from the Coutts & Son Funeral Home, Galt, conducted by Rev. D. E. Willis of Ayr. Entombment was made in the chapel at Ayr Cemetery.
