"... On the 18th day of June, 1812, President Madison declared war against England. This placed the Pennsylvania people in a very trying position and as they could not be induced to take up arms, they were pressed into service as teamsters and were obliged to furnish their own horses. Ox-teams were employed when no horses were to be had. Those who were required to serve in this capacity were Christian Schneider Jr., Peter Erb, Joseph Eby, Samuel Eschelman, Benjamin Springer, Frederick Herner, Jacob Bock, Henry Pannebecker, John Scheirich, Henry Wismer, John Biehn, Adam Shupe and Wildfong.

In January, 1813, General Proctor defeated the Americans near Detroit, capturing General Wilkinson with 500 men. In September General Harrison having been joined by a fierce body of riflemen from Kentucky, advanced towards Detroit in such force that General Proctor crossed the Detroit River and retreated up the Thames. On being followed by the American Army of 3500 men, he made a stand at Moraviantown with 800 British and 500 Indians under Tecumseh. This warrior was killed, and Proctor retreated in great confusion to Burlington Heights in order to join the Niagara Army. A number of the Waterloo people were up at the battle on the Thames. These Waterloo boys acting as teamsters had taken shelter in a swamp near by while the battle was being fought. An officer of the British army, seeing that all was lost, gave them warning, said 'Boys, all is lost, clear out and make the best you can,' upon which some ran, while others unhitched their horses and rode off for their lives. Christian Schneider Jr., who carried the money-safe on his wagon, cleared out on his horses, leaving the wagon with all its contents behind. In this defeat old Adam Shupe was taken prisoner by the Americans. He was taken before General Harrison who, perceiving his innocent and harmless appearance, dismissed him and granted him permission to return to his Canadian home. He lost both his horses and wagon. Christian Schneider was away the greater part of the summer. On his first trip he had a two-horse team. After being home a few weeks he had to go again, this time with a four-horse team. During this war which lasted a little more than two years, quite a number of small battles were fought in the Niagara Peninsula and in the vicinity of Detroit. Quite a few of these Pennsylvania Dutch boys were pressed to serve as teamsters and exposed to all manner of danger, but strange to say, not one lost his life through the war.

On the 24th of December, 1814, peace was made between England and the United States, leaving each in exactly the same position as they had been before the war. After peace was restored the government of Canada fully compensated those teamsters for their losses during the war and for their valuable services. Christian Schneider Jr. was paid $5.00 a day for the time he served with a two-horse team, and $8.00 per day for a four-horse team, besides they were paid for horses and wagons that were lost during the time they served the government."

The fourth daughter of Joseph and Barbara Wismer, was born in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, January 12th, 1790. In 1818 she came to Canada and settled in Waterloo County. On October 3rd, 1818, she was married to John, son of John and Anna (Showalter)Cressman. He was born in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, May 15th, 1795, came to Canada with his parents in 1808 and settled in Waterloo County, a little below Freeport. After their marriage they moved on the farm now possessed by the heirs of the late Jacob Zeller, about one mile south of Breslau. Here they resided until his death which took place June 30th, 1840. After his decease she continued farming until her youngest son, Henry, had attained the age of manhood, then the farm was sold and the mother made her home with her daughter, Barbara, who was married to Samuel Cressman, where she died September 2nd, 1881. Their family consisted of five children"

The sixth child of Joseph and Barbara Wismer, was born in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, March 10th, 1794, and came to Canada in 1815. He was married to Mary, daughter of Daniel and Esther (Bechtel) Cressman. She was born in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, August 17th, 1792, and came to Canada with her parents in 1806. In January, 1816 (a few weeks after their marriage), they moved on their farm three miles south-east of Berlin. This farm is still known as the old 'Wismer Farm' and is at present owned by John Kercher. Here they resided until their deaths. She died July 12th, 1872, and he died June 11, 1876. They had a family of eight children"

TYSON.-Anna Tyson, relict of the late Isaac B. Tyson, of Upper Providence Twp., Montgomery Co, Pa., died on Monday the 6th of October, at the residence of her daughter, Lydia W. Heisey, near Williams Grove Cumberland Co., aged 85 years, 4 months and 26 days. Eight years ago when her husband died, Sister Tyson removed from the above named township to Cumberland Co. She was well known in this section and had the highest esteem of a wide circle of friends. The deceased was the mother of ten children, six of whom survive her, viz: Enos W., of Schwenksville; Lydia W., wife of Henry S. Heisey, of Cumberland Co; Reuben W., of Upper Providence, Emeline W. wife of Daniel Kinsel; Mary W., wife of Levi S. Heisey of Cumberland Co., and Harriet. W., wife of Pre. Geo. Detwiler, of Sherkston, Ont. Thirty-five grand-children and two great-grand-children survive one who has passed the border line after a long and very useful life. The funeral services were held at the residence of her daughter, Lydia, on the 9th inst. Pre. John Lininger preached from Phil. 4: 8. Services were also held at the Upper Providence church on the 10th and the remains interred in the burial ground adjoining the church.

SHANTZ.--On the 28th of January, 1892, near Berlin, Waterloo Co., Ont., of paralytic stroke, Hannah Shantz, widow of Noah C. Shantz, aged 72 years and 11 months. Her remains were laid to rest on the 31st in the Mennonite Cemetery, Berlin. Funeral services were preached by Moses Bowman, Sr., in German, and Bro. David Hostetler, Wayne Co., Ohio, in English. Sister Shantz was a consistent member for over 50 years. She had a desire which the writer feels to add, that is, that her dear children who have not made their peace with God might turn to Jesus who is waiting to give them this new life, and oh, that they may with the rest of the family live christian lives, so that we may all meet as a dear family in the City of God."For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2 Cor. 5: 1. Death of Mrs. Andrew Groff. The many friends of Mrs. Andrew

Groff will learn with deep regret of her death which took place at her home north of Waterloo 6 o'clock Tuesday evening, at the age of 70 years. The funeral take will place at half past nine Saturday morning, March 2nd, from the residence, thence to Martin's meetng house for service and interment.

Mrs Groff, nee Mary Bowman, was the third daughter of the late Henry B. B. Bowman, Blair, and was born September 22nd, 1830. She was married to her now bereaved husband May 30th, 1848. Nine children were the fruit of this marriage all of whom are still living, viz: Henry, of Dundee, Minn; Magdalena, wife of T. B. Snider, Sanborn, Ia; Isaac, Peel township; Israel, Pilkington township; Ephraim, at present in Iowa; Mary wife of Rev Absalom B. Snyder, near Hespeler; Lydia Ann, wife of Abram B. Snyder, on the homestead, Waterloo, and Andrew and Allan, unmarried.

She was a kind and helpful neighbor, s good mother and wife and was universally esteemed. The husband and family will have the heartfelt sympathy of their friends and neighbors in the great loss they have sustained.

I'm looking for parents of Susanna Wismer, born August 16 1831 in Dumfries, and died May 25, 1922 in Gaines Twp, Kent County, Michigan. She's buried in Gaines Cemetery. She married William B Pickett May 15, 1849 in Waterloo County. William was an immigrant from Bedfordshire, England. here are some notes I was given, that may help: "William B Pickett is a native of England, born in Bedfordshire, Sept 28 1818. His parents, William and Mary (Baston) Pickett, emigrated to Canada in 1827, and settled in Galt. Mr. Pickett, Sr. met with an accident which disabled him from active business and the support of the family devolved upon the son. There were eight children besides the parents, and it was a heavy burden upon the boy's shoulders, but it was bourn uncomplainingly, and with the best results to the son who "honored" his father and mother. His industry and attention to the duties that came nearest to his hands, have brought him competency and comfort in the sunset of his life. he learned the joiners trade, at which he worked twenty years. he came to this county oct 13, 1854 and settled on section twenty, where he cleared 65 acres of wilderness in five years. he removed to ionia county in 1863 and in 1865 came back to kent county and settled on section twenty once more. in 1867 he fixed his residence permanently on section 33. He owns a valuable farm on sections 33 and 34, including 280 acres of finely improved land. He was married may 15 1849 to susanna wismer, born in Dumflies, Canada aug 16 1831. their children are as follows: Elizabeth (Mrs Cyrus Nogles), John, Joseph, Mary (Mrs C.W. Wernette), Amos, George, and Jesse. Mr Pickett is a republican and served as highway commissioner. a portrait of mr. pickett appears on another page, from a photograph taken in 1869. CRESSMAN. On the 5th of January, near Breslau, Waterloo county, Ont., of paralysis, Joseph Cressman, aged 68 years, 5 months and 2 days. Buried on the 8th at Cressman's Meeting-house, where a large congregation of friends and acquaintances assembled to pay their last respects and adieu to the beloved brother, whom we believe fell asleep in Jesus. He left a widow and 5 children and a number of grandchildren to mourn his departure. Funeral services by E. E. Weber and J. Woolner.

Cressman - Henry Cressman, youngest in the family of John and Esther (Wismer) Cressman, was born in Waterloo Co., Ont., Feb. 27, 1825; was married to Sarah Woolner Mar. 4, 1851. To this union were born five daughters, of whom three, together with a number of grandchildren, remain to mourn the loss of a kind-hearted parent. Bro. Cressman united with the Mennonite church in his youth and took an interest in the church work. He was identified with the first Sunday school organized in that neighborhood, which was held in the Natchez schoolhouse. He was interested in the welfare of young people and for many years took a leading part in the public school work of his district. He died in St. Jacob's, Ont., at the home of his daughter, on the 19th of March, 1906, aged 81 Y., 25 D. Funeral services were held on the 22d from the residence in St. Jacob's to the Breslau Mennonite church and cemetery.

In 1843 he was married to Sallie Erb with whom he lived in holy matrimony 41 y. 6 m. 26 d. This union was blessed with five sons and two daughters of whom three sons and two daughters survive him. Bro. Wismer was ordained to the ministry Aug. 1, 1860, some time after this he moved to Marion county, Kans. On April 9, 1887 he was ordained to the office of Bishop. After the decease of his wife he returned again to Canada where he married Lydia Musselman, widow of the late Sam. Brubaker, with whom he lived in holy matrimony nearly twenty years. Bro. Wismer was an earnest preacher of the Gospel for 48 years. Six weeks before he died he preached his last public sermon. During the last few weeks of his life he appeared to be much concerned for the welfare of the Church. His mind was almost constantly upon the Word of God. While lying in bed in a semi-conscious condition he would preach for several hours at a time. His funeral took place on Thursday, May 6. It was very largely attended, the church being crowded to the doors and many still outside. Services at the house were conducted by Samuel S. Bowman and at the church by Bish. Jonas Snider in German, Text, Phil. 1: 21: "For me to live is Christ and to die is gain." Bro. Noah Stauffer in English, from Rev. 21: 1.The loss sustained by the church and community through the death of Bro. Wismer is his eternal gain. May God comfort and bless the bereaved widow and sorrowing friends.
