The sixth child of Joseph and Barbara Wismer, was born in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, March 10th, 1794, and came to Canada in 1815. He was married to Mary, daughter of Daniel and Esther (Bechtel) Cressman. She was born in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, August 17th, 1792, and came to Canada with her parents in 1806. In January, 1816 (a few weeks after their marriage), they moved on their farm three miles south-east of Berlin. This farm is still known as the old 'Wismer Farm' and is at present owned by John Kercher. Here they resided until their deaths. She died July 12th, 1872, and he died June 11, 1876. They had a family of eight children"

BAER. - On the 28th of August, in Michigan, Barbara Wismer, wife of David Baer, aged 72 years, 10 months and 3 days. She was brought over to Wilmot township, Waterloo county, and buried at Latschaw's meeting-house on the 30th, followed to the grave by a large number of relatives and friends. Wismer. - Bishop Daniel Wismer died at his home in Berlin, Ont., May 4, 1909 of old age. He was born in Waterloo county July 29, 1820. In 1843 he was married to Sallie Erb with whom he lived in holy matrimony 41 y. 6 m. 26 d. This union was blessed with five sons and two daughters of whom three sons and two daughters survive him. Bro. Wismer was ordained to the ministry Aug. 1, 1860, some time after this he moved to Marion county, Kans. On April 9, 1887 he was ordained to the office of Bishop. After the decease of his wife he returned again to Canada where he married Lydia Musselman, widow of the late Sam. Brubaker, with whom he lived in holy matrimony nearly twenty years. Bro. Wismer was an earnest preacher of the Gospel for 48 years. Six weeks before he died he preached his last public sermon. During the last few weeks of his life he appeared to be much concerned for the welfare of the Church. His mind was almost constantly upon the Word of God. While lying in bed in a semi-conscious condition he would preach for several hours at a time. His funeral took place on Thursday, May 6. It was very largely attended, the church being crowded to the doors and many still outside. Services at the house were conducted by Samuel S. Bowman and at the church by Bish. Jonas Snider in German, Text, Phil. 1: 21: "For me to live is Christ and to die is gain." Bro. Noah Stauffer in English, from Rev. 21: 1.The loss sustained by the church and community through the death of Bro. Wismer is his eternal gain. May God comfort and bless the bereaved widow and sorrowing friends.

Baer.--Henry Baer was born in Waterloo Co., Ont., Oct. 21, 1842; died Jan. 22, 1927; aged 84 y. 3 m. 1 d. In 1867 he was united in marriage to Leah Bowman. To this union were born 14 children of whom 4 preceded him in death. He leaves his sorrowing widow, 6 sons, 4 daughters, 50 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren. Soon after their marriage they moved to Hay Township, Huron Co., where they resided for 10 years. From there they moved to Waterloo Co., where they resided till his death. In 1872 he was ordained Deacon in the Latschar Mennonite Church near Manheim, Ont., which office he filled faithfully for 55 years, when the Lord called him to his eternal reward. On Jan. 25 short funeral services were held at his late residence by Bro. J. W. Witmer. Further services were held at the Latschar Church by Bishop Mannasseh Hallman. Texts, Gen. 5: 24; Heb. 11: 5. His remains were laid in the adjoining cemetery.

MANNHEIM

Pioneer Passes. - One by one the old pioneers of Waterloo County are constantly moving from realms of usefulness to higher kingdoms of bliss. Death claimed a highly esteemed pioneer in our immediate vicinity in the person of Henry Baer. On Saturday morning, Jan. 22, he passed peacefully away. He 'was born Oct. 21st, 1842, in the township of Wilmot, about 3 miles west of Mannheim. Like many of the early settlers in this county he began in humble circumstances but by hard, honest toil and frugality he forged ahead to own a splendid homestead. possessing all the latest improvements on his farm. His early education was obtained at Hamacher's school. Having early chosen carpentering as a trade he erected his first barn at the age of 14. At the age of 18. Henry with his parents where they engaged in clearing the forest to provide land for crops moved to Blandford township At the age of 21 he began carpentering for himself. He made shingles near German Mills to earn enough to provide for board and clothing. Becoming a skilled framer he erected many barns and houses. Mr. Baer in those early days endured and overcame many hardships. While following his trade he had to walk on poor roads with a heavy kit of tools on his back, 7 miles before breakfast and often after a day's work 14 miles to a home. He married Miss Leah Bowman, daughter of Rev. M. Bowman at the age of 26. Two years later he united with the Mennonite Church of which he has been a consistent and valued member. Moving to Hay Township, Huron Co., in 1872 he became a deacon of that church and continued faithful to his ordination these 55 years. Remaining in Huron for ten wears, he returned to Waterloo In 1882 and purchased the farm on which he and his estimable wife have lived since. The union was blessed with 14 children, three sons and one daughter having predeceased him. The six sons and four daughters surviving are Angeline (Mrs. Dan Eby) of Petersburg: Elvina (Mrs. Wm. Bachert) of Kitchener; Louisa (Mrs. Irvin Shantz) of Freeport; Eva (Mrs. John Francis) of Kitchener; Moses. of New Dundee: Ephraim, of Haysville; Simon, of Breslau; Josiah, of Alberta, and Norman and Ezra of Mannheim, the latter residing on the homestead.

Mr. and Mrs. Baer lived happily in the bonds of matrimonial life for full 60 years. The deceased was in the best of health until last March. He was not confined to the house. however, until about two months before his death. He bore his sickness with Christian courage and patience.

The funeral was held on January 25th, services being conducted at the residence by Rev. J. W. Witmer and at Latchar Mennonite Church. The scripture lesson was read by Rev. Witmer, prayer was offered by Bishop Derstine and Bishop Manasseh Hallman preached the sermon from the words of Gen. 5:24 - Enoch walked with God; and he was not; for God took him. It was an eloquent sermon for the living with some reference to his old friend and Sunday School teacher, and one from whom he (the preacher) had received excellent counsel. The pallbearers were six grandchildren Edwin and Gordon Eby, Clayton Bacher, Clarence Shants, Manasseh and Arthur Baer. His age was 84 years, 3 mos. and 1 day. He leaves to mourn his sorrowing companion who is also past the four score years, ten children, fifty grandchildren and four great grandchildren. "Truly a father in Israel has fallen at the very hush of night when life's heat and ordor are over, to inherit a well earned rest.

SUDDEN DEATH OF MOSES E. WISMER

One of the town's best known and most highly respected citizens, Moses E. Wismer; one of Preston's outstanding citizens, was removed by death late Saturday afternoon. He had been a resident of the town for 32 years, and there was no citizen who was more highly respected than the late Mr. Wismer. He possessed a very kind and pleasing disposition and made many friends. He was a man who had a good word to say for everyone, was well read, and always took a great interest in town affairs. He was an outstanding figure at nomination meetings for many years and it is doubtful if there was a nomination meeting in the past twenty years at which he was not nominated for some municipal office. He had served in the Council as Deputy Reeve and filled that office to the satisfaction of the ratepayers, proving a valuable representative of the town of Preston at the County Council. In religion he was a Mennonite and in politics he was a staunch Liberal.

The late Mr. Wismer was in his seventy-sixth year and in spite of his advanced age he was hale and hearty. For years he had done all the work on his farm. He had always enjoyed good health, and only on Friday last, complained of not feeling well, but he then would not have a doctor called because he said it was nothing serious. On Saturday, he did his work around the barn during the day and at five o'clock went to the barn to do the evening chores. He had about completed the work around the barn when he suddenly passed away. It was six o'clock when Mrs. Wismer noticed that the cattle were still out in the barnyard, and feeling uneasy she went to the barn to investigate and discovered the lifeless body of her husband lying in the stable. Medical aid was immediately summoned but life was extinct.


The late Mr. Wismer was a son of the late Bishop Daniel Wismer and was born in the vicinity of New Hamburg, on April 9, 1846. Shortly afterwards his parents moved to Lexington, where he obtained his education. On February 16, 1868, he was married to Magdalena, daughter of Jacob Wismer. Following their marriage they moved to the old Wismer farm three miles southeast of Kitchener where they resided for 19 years. Then he and his family moved to Doon where he entered into partnership with T. and A.B. Snyder and from Doon he moved to the farm at Preston, where he died. The news of his death came as a great shock to the family and the citizens of the town. He leaves to mourn his loss, a widow and the following children: Orphan H. Wismer, near Baden in Wilmot Township; Addison M. Wismer, Millroche; Mrs. N. Snider, Blair; Nelson A. Wismer, Seattle, U.S.A. Mrs. Phelps McNabb, Village of Massey, Mrs. Isaac Erb, Kitchener; Herbert D. Wismer, German Mills.

The funeral will be held on Friday afternoon at 1: 30, with a short service at the house, thence to the East End Mennonite Church, Kitchener, where a service will be held and interment will take place at the East End Mennonite Cemetery.

WELL-KNOWN MAN CALLED BY DEATH
MR. ISAAC WISMER PASSES AWAY AT RIPE OLD AGE
RESULT OF STROKE

A prominent figure in the life of Elmira was removed from the scene Tuesday night when Mr. Isaac Wismer passed away as the result of a stroke sustained on Friday last when with his usual energy, despite his seventy-five years, he was sweeping the cellar at his home on Park street. Mrs. Wismer, who was upstairs heard him call, and on running to his assistance found him helpless below. She assisted him upstairs but shortly afterwards he lapsed into unconsciousness, from which he never recovered until his death, which was due not only to the stroke but to a pneumonia complication which also set in.

The late Mr. Wismer was born at New Hamburg but moved with his family to Bloomingdale while still a young boy, his school days being spent at the latter village. He married Miss Susan Snider of Bloomingdale, and shortly afterwards moved to Floradale. About thirty years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Wismer moved to Elmira, where Mr. Wismer took an active interest in affairs, his activity in recent years in driving the cattle through the streets of the town for the drovers whose shipping work he attended to being always conspicuous. His white beard, cheery smile, and top boots always identified him as one of the picturesque figures of the pioneer age which has slipped away. He celebrated the fifty-fourth year of his marriage on the seventh of March last.

Besides his widow, he leaves two daughters and three sons as follows: Mrs. James Mann (Jane) of Kitchener, Mrs. Burnham Fisher (Ida) of Petersburg, Mr. Edgar Wismer of Buhl, Idaho, Mr. Arthur A. Wismer of Edmonton, Alberta, and Mr. Leslie Wismer of Edmonton, Alberta.

There survive also two sisters, Mrs. Samuel Moyer, of Kitchener, and Mrs. Croft of Michigan, and one brother Daniel Wismer of Kitchener. The funeral takes place tomorrow afternoon, with services at the house and at the Evangelical church, interment being made in the Elmira Union Cemetery.

Wismer. - Daniel E. Wismer was born in Lexington, Ont., Jan. 31, 1860; died at the Kitchener-Waterloo, Ont., Hospital on Wednesday, Sept. 5, 1934, after a brief illness; aged 74 y. 7 m. 5 d. He resided in Kitchener the past 18 years. In 1878 he was united in holy matrimony with Theressa Geckel who predeceased him ten years. This union was blessed with one daughter, Mrs. I. K. Roos; two sons, Albert and Harry, all of Kitchener, Ont., who survive; and Daniel, who passed away eight years ago. Bro. Wismer was converted in May, 1932, and became a faithful member of the First Mennonite Church, Kitchener. He frequently confessed that he knew his sins were forgiven and that he was saved. In every home he visited he left a testimony for Christ. The last night he lived he prayed most of the night, and continually asked the good Lord to take him home. The funeral was held at the First Mennonite Church on Sept. 7. Text I Cor. 15: 49. Ministers, Jesse B. Martin and Oscar Burkholder.

SNYDER - On the 7th of March, 1897, near Bloomingdale, Waterloo Co., Ont., very suddenly and unexpectedly, of heart trouble, Amos Snyder, aged 47 years and 20 days. Deceased had been in feeble health for some time, but was able to be about. On the above date a meeting had been held at his home by Pre. Springer of the U.B. church (Old Constitution). After a hearty supper deceased went out, and upon entering the house he complained of weakness to his wife, she being alone. He lay down on the lounge and in half an hour he was dead. He leaves a wife in feeble health, a son of about seventeen, a daughter and many relatives and friends to mourn their loss. Buried on the 9th at the Snyder M.H. Funeral services by Moses C. Bowman in German and by Pre. Springer and A. Stoltz in English. The deceased was converted last fall.

SNYDER. - Jacob W. Snyder was born May 4, 1856, in Waterloo Co., Ont. After 6 days of intense suffering he died at his home near Elmdale, Mich., Sept. 9, 1915, aged 59y. 4m. 5d. He was united in marriage to Mary Ann Snyder. To this union were born 2 sons and 2 daughters, one son preceding him to the great beyond. 35 years ago he confessed Christ as his Savior and affiliated with the U.B. Church. He leaves to mourn his departure his companion, one son, two daughters, two brothers, two sisters, 8 grandchildren, and a host of relatives and friends. Funeral the 12th. Services at the home by Jacob P. Miller at the Bowne Church by Charles Deardorff, where a large concourse of people met to pay the last tribute of respect to one whom they loved.

EPHRAIM W. SNYDER - was the son of Moses B. Snyder, and great grandson o f pioneer Jacob Schneider of Bloomingdale. He was born March 5, 1858 at Bloomingdale (Vernon Snyder farm). He was married to Susannah, daughter of Peter E. and Catherine (Fry) Eby, on March 14, 1880. She was born at St. Jacobs Feb. 16, 1861. Mr. and Mrs. Snyder came to Rosendale after their marriage. He was a day laborer and worked at various farm in the district . Market gardening was carried on here. Ephraim Snyder was handicapped in making a living as he was subject to fits of epilepsy. Medical science then did not know how to cope with this disease. An adopted daughter, Lewella, Mrs. John Robertson of Chesley, Ontario, says "One thing I remember, we were very poor. Dad was an epileptic so farming was out. We kept a few cows and a horse, grew berries and vegetables and attended the Berlin weekly market. We were just existing, not living" . She also remembers the school at Bloomingdale, and going to the Mennonite Sunday School with an old gentleman, Henry B. Wahl, in his horse and buggy, and reciting the Bible verses she had learned there. The years went on until one day Mr. Snyder suffered a severe epileptic fit; he became violent and went about brandishing a large butcher knife. The family was terrified but neighbors soon came to the rescue. It took five men to subdue the unfortunate victim. They secured him with heavy ropes and placed him on a democrat (carriage) and with the village constable, Tom Bedford, watching over him, he was taken to the Berlin jail where he was placed in a padded cell . From there he was moved to the Hamilton asylum. He lived for three months and died there on March 10th, 1903. (This information given by Mrs. Selina Weber, a neighbor living across the road at the time.)

The family continued to live here until March 20, 1905when the property was sold. Mrs. Snyder then moved to Port Elgin where her relatives resided.

Ephraim Snyder and daughter Hannah, who died in 1880, and son Hiram Oct. 25, 1882, are buried in the Mennonite cemetery, Bloomingdale.

Susannah (Eby) Snyder died Aug. 10, 1936 age 75, and son Jeremiah died June 19, 1948- both buried in Southampton cemetery. Daughter Lizzie, Mrs. Wesley Smith, resides in Saugeen Township, Bruce County.

Shantz.-Jacob W. Shantz was born in Bloomingdale, Ont., Sept. 3, 1850; died suddenly in Breslau, Ont., on Jan. 6, 1931; aged 80 y. 4 m. 3 d. Fifty-two years ago he was united in marriage to Magdalena Cressman, who with 7 children (Emmanuel, Ananias, Addison, Selina, Hattie, Emma and Fannie), 1 brother (Daniel), and 2 sisters (Mrs. Chris. Allemang and Mrs. Owen Bowman), survive. One son (Nathan) died in Alberta twelve years ago. Bro. Shantz united with the Mennonite Church 45 years ago. He has been a faithful member of the Cressman congregation for about 30 years. He was a man of quiet disposition and exemplary life, and will be missed by a large circle of friends and relatives. The funeral was held on Friday, Jan. 9, in charge of L. S. Pipher and Oscar Burkholder. Text, Psa. 90: 10.

Shantz.--Menno Shantz was born at Waterloo, Ont., 1869; died very suddenly while at work of heart failure, June 16, 1927. In his young manhood he was married to Rebecca Brubacher. 9 children came to bless this union,--Barbara, Johnnie, and Nancy dying in infancy, Maryann and Susanna at the age of 21, 3 boys (Abram, Dan, and Edward) and 1 daughter (Hannah) remain with the devoted wife and mother to mourn the loss of a kind loving husband and father; also 2 brothers (Jacob and Daniel) two sisters (Mrs. Esther Bauman and Mrs. Barbara Allemom) remain. A large number of relatives and friends were gathered together to pay their last respects to the departed. He was buried at the Mennonite Church, of which he was a member since his youth. Henry Brenneman conducted the services. Once more we were made to see that our life is as the grass in the morning it is flourishing and in the evening cut and withered away. We must all appear in the presence of God to give an account of our deeds whether they be good or evil.

Mrs. Daniel Eby - By Record Correspondent - New Dundee, April 20

Mrs. Daniel Eby passed away at her home, RR 2, Petersburg, yesterday, after a lingering illness. She was in her 73rd year. Mrs. Eby was born in Waterloo Township on July 7th, 1869, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Baer. After her marriage to Mr. Eby, they took up residence in Wilmot Township where she lived until the time of her death. She was a member of the Latschar Mennonite Church. Her husband, two sons, Edwin on the home farm, Gordon of Breslau, and daughter Ellen at home; three sisters, Elvina, (Mrs. William Bachert) of Kitchener, Louisa (Mrs. Irvin Shantz) of Preston, Eva (Mrs. John Francis of Kitchener; five brothers Moses of New Dundee, Ephraim of New Hamburg, Simon of Petersburg, Josiah of Wainwright, Alberta, Norman of Petersburg also survive. The funeral will take place on Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock from the family residence to the Latschar Mennonite Church with interment in the adjoining cemetery. Bishop M. Hallman and Rev. Lorne Schmidt will be in charge of the service.

Mrs. Daniel Eby

Mrs. Daniel Eby passed away at her home, Bleam's Road, east of Wilmot Centre, on Sunday after a lingering illness. She was in her 73rd year.

Mrs. Eby was born in Waterloo township on July 7th, 1869, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Hy. Baer. After her marriage to Mr. Eby, they took up residence in Wilmot Township, where she lived until the time of her death. She was a member of the Latschar Mennonite Church.

Her husband, two sons, Edwin, on the home farm, Gordon, of Breslau, and daughter, Ellen, at home, three sisters, Elvina, (Mrs. Wm. Bachert), Kitchener, Louisa, (Mrs. Irvin Shantz), Preston, Eva, (Mrs. John Francis), Kitchener, five brothers, Moses, New Dundee, Ephraim, New Hamburg, Simon, Petersburg, Josiah, Wainwright, Alta., and Norman, of Petersburg, survive.

The funeral took place Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock from the family residence to the Latschar Mennonite Church with interment in the adjoining cemetery. Bishop M. Hallman and Rev. Lorne Schmidt were in charge of the services.

Bachert, Elvina, daughter of the late Henry and Leah (Bowman) Baer, was born in Waterloo Twp., Ont., on March 12, 1871; passed away at the Kitchener and Waterloo Hospital on Jan. 6, 1952; aged 80 y. 9 m. 24 d.
In February, 1897, she was united in marriage to William Bachert.
Mrs. Bachert was a faithful member of the First Mennonite Church, Kitchener, Ont. She is survived by her husband, 2 sons (Clayton, Grand Rapids, Mich., and Wilfred, Chicago, Ill.), 2 daughters (Eva-Mrs. Elmer Shantz, Kitchener, Ont.; and Alice, Colombia, South America), 5 brothers (Moses, New Dundee, Ont., Ephraim, Haysville, Ont.; Simon and Josiah, Kitchener, Ont.; and Norman, Baden, Ont.), 2 sisters (Mrs. Irvin Shantz, Freeport, Ont., and Mrs. Jack Frances, Kitchener, Ont.), 14 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren.
One son (Ivan) died in 1946.
Funeral services were held at the Stirling Avenue Mennonite Church in charge of J. H. Hess with Wilfred Ulrich and U. K. Weber assisting. Burial was made at First Mennonite Church Cemetery.

Baer, Ephraim, son of the late Henry and Leah (Bowman) Baer, was born in Zurich, Ont., Jan. 24, 1877; passed away suddenly at his home Dec. 8, 1953; aged 76 y. 11 m. 15 d. In 1904 he married Lovina Nahrgang, who survives. Also surviving are 7 sons and 7 daughters (Oscar and Mervin, of New Dundee; Sylvester, of Manitoba; Moses, Jeremiah and Martin, of Bright; Allan, of North Dakota; Zelma, of Elmira; Leah and Mary, at home; Vinetta, of India; Barbara-Mrs. Gordon Bindernagle, of Kitchener; Martha, of Toronto; and Viola-Mrs. Roderick McKenzie, of Galt). From his youth he was a faithful member of the Biehn Mennonite Church. We praise God for calling him home without suffering, for he fell asleep to awaken with Jesus. Funeral services Dec. 11, were in charge of C. C. Cressman and M. H. Roth.

Baer.- Simon, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Baer, was born near Zurich, Ont., Dec. 22, 1878; died at the South Waterloo Hospital, Galt, Ont., after a brief illness, June 15, 1969; aged 90 y. 5 m. 23 d. He was married to Luanna Shantz, who died in 1953. His second wife, Lydia Shantz, survives. Also surviving are 3 sons (Arthur, Raymond, and Manasseh), 4 daughters (Verna-Mrs. Omar Rudy, Grace-Mrs. Mervin Weber, Lillian-Mrs. Ronald Snider, and Florence-Mrs. Vernice Smith), 18 grandchildren, 35 greatgrandchildren, one brother (Norman), and one sister (Eva-Mrs. John Francis). He was preceded in death by one daughter (Edith, in 1943) and 2 infant sons. He was a member of the First Mennonite Church, where funeral services were held June 18, with Robert Johnson and Rufus Jutzi officiating^.

SAD ACCIDENT

On Good Friday, the 31st of March, several of the sons of Bro. Henry Baer near Manheim, Waterloo Co., Ontario, were engaged in boiling maple sap in the woods, the rest of the family having gone to meeting. While the oldest of them went home for a short time on some business, his brother Noah, about eight and a half years old, accidently fell into the pan of boiling sap, and was scalded so badly that he died at about 10 o'clock the same evening. Buried at Latschar's cemetery on Monday April 3d, where a large number of people were assembled to sympathize with the sorrowing family in their sad bereavement. Bro. Menno Cressman spoke in German from Matt. 22: 12 and Bro. N. Stauffer in English from Mark 10: 14, 15, 17.

Baer.-Ezra, youngest son of Deacon Henry and Leah Baer, was born in Waterloo Co., Ont., Nov. 30, 1890; died at the Kitchener-Waterloo hospital) following an operation for appendicitis on Jan. 2, 1936; aged 45 y. 1 m 3 d. His illness was only of a few days' duration and therefore his death came as a distinct shock. At the age of 12 he confessed Christ as his personal Savior and united with the Mennonite Church. His testimony a few days before his death was, "I am ready to go." On Sept. 9, 1919, he was united in marriage with Elizabeth Good of New Hamburg, Ont. This union was blest with 5 sons and 1 daughter. He leaves his wife, 5 sons, 1 daughter, his aged mother, 5 brothers and 4 sisters. Funeral services were held Jan. 5, by M. H. Shantz at the home and M. Hallman and J. W. Witmer at the Latschar Mennonite church. Text, II Cor. 4: 17, 15. A large concourse of people had gathered to pay the last tribute of respect. Burial in adjoining cemetery.

Mrs. Minnie Bell Wilkerson, 48, wife of Elmer Wilkenson of Amsden, died suddenly Saturday evening at United Memorial hospital. She had been in ill health for some time but was seriously ill for only two hours. Her passing was a complete shock to the community and her family.
She was horn Minnie Bell Bauman on July 29, 1895 at Sebawa township, Ionia county. On July 3, 1914, she married Elmer Wilkenson, who, with six children, survive, including four daughters, Mrs, Thelma Wolschow of Detroit, Miss Enna Wilkenson of Saginaw, Mrs. Elna Johnson of Ypsilanti and Luthala at home; two Sons, E. J.. of Ypsilanti, and Ralph. who is with the armed forces stationed at Keesler Field, Biloxic, Miss., and who is expected to arrive home by plane today to attend funeral services for his mother; also two brothers, Nelson Bauman of Portland and D. C. Bauman of Detroit; three sisters, Mrs. Jesse Leonard of Battle Creek. Mrs. Fred Smith of Hastings and Mrs. Louis Tessman of Harrison. Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, CWT, at the Stebbins Funeral Home in Sheridan with burial in Sheridan cemetery.

Wismer, -- Orphen H., son of Mr. and Mrs. Moses E. Wismer, was born in Waterloo Twp., Ont., Aug. 30, 1869; died Oct. 14, 1951; aged 82 y. 1m. 14 d. He was ordained to the ministry on July 10, 1893, and served as pastor of the Shantz Mennonite Church for over forty years. His wife, the former Sarah Bechtel, predeceased him in January, 1951. They were married May 10, 1892. Surviving are 5 sons (Byron, McCallisburg, Iowa; Milton, Windsor, Ont.; Herbert, Baden, Ont.; Elmer, Kitchener, Ont.; and Jeremiah, Bright, Ont.), 3 daughters (Florence- Mrs. Isaac Snyder, Adams. Lorne Shantz, both of Baden; Alice- Mrs. Lloyd Shantz, Waterloo, Ont.), 3 brothers (Addison, Grimsby, Ont.; Nelson, London, Ont.; and Herbert, Doon, Ont.), 3 sisters (Mrs. I. B. Erb, Kitchener, Ont.; Mrs. Nathaniel Snider, also of Kitchener; and Mrs. Phelps McNab, Owen Sound, Ont.), 23 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted at the home of Lorne Shantz and at the Shantz Mennonite Church on Oct. 18 by L. H. Witmer and Manasseh Hallman, assisted by J. B. Martinand Peter Nafziger. Burial was made in the Shantz Cemetery.

MRS. SARAH J. MANN

Mrs. Sarah Jane Mann, 77, of 28 Pequegnat Ave., died Sunday night at the K-W Hospital Annex, Knollwood Park, following a lengthy illness. Born July 1, 1871, in Floradale, she was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Wismer. She was a member of Trinity United Church. On Oct. 23, 1895, in Kitchener, she married James Mann, who survives together with two sons, Horace of Kitchener, and Harry of Woodstock and two brothers, Arthur and Leslie Wismer, both of Edmonton, Alta. Five grandchildren also survive. One daughter, Grace, and a son, Lloyd, predeceased her.

Mrs. Ida Fisher of Doon was instantly killed and three others were injured, two seriously, in an auto-radial collision just east of Kitchener between 10.30 and 11 o'clock Saturday night. The party was returning from Kitchener, where they had been shopping and turned into the Doon road off the Kitchener-Preston highway just at the Kitchener city limits, when their car was struck near the left rear wheel

He was cutting wheat in the evening at about six o'clock when he was seen to sit down by his brother who thought he was resting, but when the brother reached him he was dead. Funeral on the 27th from the parental home to the Berlin Mennonite M. H. Burial in the cemetery adjoining.

He was a member of the Preston Church, where funeral services were held Dec. 30, with Rufus Jutzi and Emerson McDowell officiating; interment in East End Church Cemetery, Kitchener.

Amsy S. Shantz Amsy S. Shantz of Fairview Mennonite Home in Preston died in the South Waterloo Hospital in Galt Friday after a brief illness. He was 85.

Born in Kitchener, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John C. Shantz, he had lived in Preston for the past two years. He formerly lived at RR 2, Hespeler, and farmed at RR 3, Kitchener. Mr. Shantz was a member of Stirling Avenue Mennonite Church.

Surviving besides his wife, the former Luella Kinzie, whom he married in Breslau in 1915, are one son, J. Clifford of Salem; five daughters, Mrs. Amos (Vera) Kipfer of Manilla, N.Y., Nora of Waterloo,. Mrs. David H. (Alice) Bauman of Flora-dale, Mrs. Stanley (Myrtle) Stricker of Kitchener and Mrs. Russell (Mildred) Scheerer of RR 1, Hespeler and 12 grand-children.

Mr. Shantz was the last surviving member of his family. He was predeceased by four sisters, three brothers and two sons. The body is at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home where Rev. Howard Schmitt of Wanner Mennonite Church will conduct the service on Monday at 3 p.m. Burial will be in Woodland cemetery.

FREY - On the 1st of July 1893, near Breslau, Waterloo Co., Ont., very suddenly, Abram, second son of Bro. John Frey, aged 16 years, 5 months and 13 days. Abram was bringing a mowing machine from another farm, having fastened the machine to the back of a light wagon. As he was closing a gate through which he had just passed the team started and he, running forward, and trying to get on his hold gave way and he fell back, the wheel of the mower passing over his head killing him instantly. He was buried on the 4th at the Snyder M.H. Many friends and neighbors assembled to sympathize with the deeply bereaved family. A long-time resident of Chesley, Ont., and Arran Township, the former Lewella Snyder, a daughter of the late Jacob and Hannah Snyder, formerly of Bloomingdale. Mrs. Robertson was predeceased by her husband, John, and a son, Stewart, who was killed in Sicily in the Second World War. She is survived by a son, Donald of Southampton; three daughters, Jean (Mrs. Ellis Hammond) of Chesley, Helen (Mrs. Clarence Ditner) of St. Agatha and Peggy (Mrs. Tom Cousineau) of Elmira; 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Rested at the Emke Funeral Home, Chesley, until Friday, December 9, when funeral and committal services were held at the funeral home at 2 p.m.

Shantz - Ananias C., son of Jacob W. and Magdalene (Cressman) Shantz, was born Oct. 21, 1873, in Ontario, Can.; passed to his reward Nov. 2, 1943, 4 days after he had a stroke; aged 70 y. 11 d. He was united in marriage to Anna Steckle, Feb. 16, 1897, who preceded him in death, July 22, 1940. To this union were born 4 sons and 4 daughters (Ivan, Stoughton. Wis.; Ada, wife of Oliver Handrich; Melvin; Ernest; Clifford; and Alma, wife of Floyd Bontrager, all of Fairview; Emma, wife of Edgar Yoder and Edna, both of Midland. He moved with his family to a farm near Fairview, Mich., in the spring of 1908 where he lived until death. He leaves to mourn his departure besides his children, 29 grandchildren, 2 greatgrandchildren, 2 brothers (Emanuel, Breslau, Ont.; Addison, of northern Canada), 4 sisters (Mrs. Emma Schroeder, New York state; Mrs. Hatte Llyness, N. Dak.; Mrs. Ed Nolan, Wis.; and Mrs. Grant Palms, Minn.), also Naomi Markley who has been in the home for a number of years besides many other relatives and friends. As a young father he accepted Christ as his Saviour and united with the Mennonite Church in which faith he died.

SHANTZ. - Nathan, son of Jacob W. and Magdalena Shantz, was born in Wellington Co., Ont., Sept. 13, 1879; died of typhoid fever in the General Hospital at Calgary, Alta., Sept. 4, 1915; aged 35y. 11m. 21d. He leaves to mourn his departure, father, mother, 4 sisters, and 3 brothers, and a host of relatives and friends. The remains were brought to the home of his parents in Breslau, Waterloo Co., from which the funeral was held Sept. 12, 1915. Service at the house by Bro. Oscar Burkholder, and at the church by Bros. Mrs. Henry S. Brubacher, 87, of Floradale, formerly of Elmira, died Tuesday at the home of her daughter Mrs. Henry W. Bauman after a short illness.

She was the former Hannah Shantz, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Shantz of Maryborough Township. Her husband died in 1964.

Surviving are six sons, Amos of Minden, Tobias, Ira and Irvine, all of RR 2, Wallenstein, Elmer and Emerson of Elmira; three daughters: Mrs. Henry W. (Rebecca) Bauman of Floradale, Mrs. Ed (Sarah) Buehler of RR 1, Elmira and Mrs. Thomas (Elvina) Martin of Copper Cliff; three brothers, Ozias Gingrich of Elmira, Amos Gingrich of RR 1, Waterloo and Nelson Gingrich of RR 4, Elmira; 35 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. ON daughter died in 1916.

The body was at the Dreisinger Funeral Home, Elmira, until 9 am Friday when removal was made to the home of Emerson Brubacher for a service at 2 pm, Friday, thence to the Elmira Mennonite Meeting House for further service. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.

Shantz, -- Henry Cyrenius, son of Henry and Magdalena (Bauman) Shantz, was born in Marysborough Twp., Ont., on June 4, 1879; passed away March 4, 1955, in the Lanigan Hospital near his home at Guernsey, Sask; aged 75 y. 9 m. On June 5, 1906, he was married to Angeline Snider, who preceded him in death on Jan. 22, 1952, at the identical age of his passing. To this union were born 5 sons and 2 daughters (Wesley, Arthur, Lincoln, Olive-Mrs. Clair Biehn, Eileen-Mrs. Harold Biehn, all of Guernsey; Leonard of Elmira, Ont., and Daniel, who died in infancy). One sister (Mrs. Henry Brubaker), one half sister (Mrs. Seranus Martin), and four half brothers (Ozias, Amos, Eli, and Nelson Gingerich), all living near Kitchener, Ont. Two half sisters and one half brother preceded him in death. There are 29 grandchildren, of which 4 are in Ontario and the rest at Guernsey. As a young man he went to Alberta, living at Mayton, Alta., on a homestead and following his marriage he mad his home near Aldersyde, Ala., until 1929 when the family moved to Guernsey. We praise God for the manifestation of His grace in the life of our brother. Funeral services were held March 8, conducted by Stanley Shantz, assisted by Arnold Shantz.

Edmund Shantz, 66, died at his residence, Waterloo following a short illness. A native of Bloomingdale, he was a son of the late Noah Shantz and. Rachel C. Shantz, stable foreman at Silverwood's Dairy. Mr. Shantz made his home in Kitchener for the past 40 years. He attended the Evangelical church. He was an enthusiastic curler and bowler. His wife, formerly Mary Etta Gimbel, died 11 years ago.

Surviving are two sons, Lorne, at home and Pte. Walter, overseas with the No. 1 C.O.R.U.; four daughters, Mrs. Fred Meyer and Mrs. Albert Schmidt, Waterloo, Mrs. Edward Cole, Capdela-Madleine, Que., and Mrs. Edward Arris, Vancouver; also three brothers, Elah, Didsbury, Alberta, Dan, Elmira and Maurice, Calgary, and nine grandchildren.
