    Notes:

I n 1860 Messrs. Gideon Ochs, George Guenther and John Sachs entered into partnership in the Carpenter business under style: Gideon Ochs & Co., which partnership subsisted until 1864 when Mr. Guenther withdrew to go with Fred. Guggisburg. For a time the remaining two partners continued. Both partnerships owned property in Hespeler.

From 1867 until 1874 Gideon Ochs appears personally as a carpenter, from 1870 on, as resident. Because he lived in the Township and owned no property in Hespeler Mr. John Sachs does not appear on our assessment rolls subsequent to 1864 when evidently the Partnership ceased. Mr. John Sachs apparently worked with Mr. Ochs or with his brother, Henry Sachs (or both) until about 1874 when he went as Boss Carpenter, Millwright and General Maintenance man for J. Schofield & Co. where he remained until his death in 1887.

When he went to work at the Lower Mill, Mr. Sachs took along as Millwright, Gideon Ochs, who left around 1876 and moved to the farm west of the Guelph Road just above the Block Line. John Wehner and Fred. Fiedler worked for John Sachs at the Lower Mill and during the time there of Mr. John Sachs, many of the mill houses were built.

    SERIOUS ACCIDENT AT HESPELER.

Fall of a Scaffold at the Star Mills.

Fifteen Men Hurt - One Dead and Others Fatally Injured.

    (From our Correspondent.)
This (Wednesday) forenoon about 9:30 o'clock, without a moment's warning the cross beams of timber,on the second story of the rear part of Forbes & Co.'s St Woollen Mills, broke, precipitating about twenty men to the ground, & distance of some twenty-five feet. All the men were more or less injured. The following is a list of the names of those who, at the time of sending away this news, are in critical condition: - Mr. John Sachs, boss mechanic, Mr. Conwarf, sr., Edward Johnston, Fred. Sohonfeldt, John Wehner and David Guenther. Mr. Sachs it is feared will not recover from the injuries received.

Drs. Mcintyre and Lockhart are in close attendance on the patients who are most seriously injured.

It is needless to add all was done that was possible to do to relieve the injured men, In a few minutes hundreds of willing hands were engaged removing the debris from above the men, who fell with the timbers and lay buried beneath the same, and as one by one were extricated from their pinned position received kind attention in the way of washing the blood from their wounds and placed in some adjoining house or taken to their respective homes. None were allowed to be removed until examined by the doctors.

It is the worst catastrophe that has occurred here in many years.

LATER, 11:10 A.M.- Since sending previous word Mr. John Sachs has died, others are not expected to get over their injuries.

    Hespeler Correspondence.

    BURIAL OF MR. SACHS.
On Friday afternoon last the funeral of Mr. John Sachs, aged fifty-two years, took place from his late residence to the Hespeler cemetery. The funeral was conducted by the Ancient Order of United Workmen, the member of said Society turning out in large numbers, and presenting a fine appearance, dressed neatly in dark colored clothes, wearing white gloves and the regular A. O. U. W. badge. Many of the brethren were from distant places; among the number we noticed some from Galt, Guelph, Morriston, Weston and Preston. In addition to the society all the employees of the Star Mills, male and and female, marched, also many of the villagers as well as a large number from a distance. There were sixty-four single carriages and twenty three double carriages in the line of procession. Among the number was the carriage of the firm, for whom the deceased had worked for so many years, the occupants thereof being Mr. Robert Forbes and son George. The procession was twenty minutes passing a given point. Rev. Mr. Haigh officiated at the house previous to conveying the remains of the deceased there from, and the Rev. pastor of the Lutheran church conducted the services at the grave. The funeral sermon was preached in the Lutheran church, of which deceased was a staunch adherent, by the pastor, on Sunday evening last, a large congregation attending.

    DOING WELL

All the men injured through the accident at the Star Woollen Mills, on Wednesday the 24th, are doing full as well as can be expected.

    Notes:

"The Queens". On a plan dated 1846 the corner lot at Queen and Guelph Road is shown as "The Tavern Lot" which suggests that there was then an hotel either in building or in operation. I am lacking in its earliest history.

Stephen Flynn kept Hotel there 1866-68; Michael Haller, 1868-71; John Fields, 1872-73; James Baker, 1874-86; then came the Waypers, father and son, and after them, Albert E. Thomson and then again by Joseph Wayper Jr. After "Josh" died the hotel was operated for a time by his widow and her second husband, Archie Smith. During the time of The Ontario Temperance Act, Mr. George D. Forbes bought the hotel and refurnished it and Henry Sachs managed it.

After Mr. Forbes died, George Thorlby rented the hotel and then it was sold to James Sutherland Cornell, by him to Joseph Krempowich who in turn sold to Samuel Sturman, the present owner.

    ______________

In 1882 Edward Roos bought the lot which Charlton and Hurst now own and on the front portion now torn down, built a barn with dwelling above which his family occupied for years; and in rear of this barn he built a stable to hold about twenty horses. In addition to the driving horses kept for hire, Mr. Roos kept a cab which he turned out at weddings, etc. behind a fine well-dressed, well-groomed pair of horses driven by a man equipped always with a silk hat. He had a carryall for summer use, which the ball team hired to make their out-of-town trips, picnic parties hired to go to the lake, etc. and for winter he had his pleasure sleigh which accommodated a goodly number out for a sleigh ride.

He always kept a couple of teams for hauling sand, stone, gravel and coal from the Grand Trunk to the Lower Mill, for movings and the rest of it, and taken together, Ed's revenues were sufficient to make him some money. As far as his single rigs were concerned one had to speak a week or two ahead to be sure of one to take the girl friend to some big dance, to the Aberfoyle Show, or other soul-stirring such-like events.

Ed. Roos sold out to William O. Vanatter in 1893 and embarked in the Hotel business at St. George. In 1898 Van. sold out to Henry Sachs and Alex Roos who conducted the business under style: "Sachs & Roos" and they in turn sold about 1909 to Charles Haas, V.S., and John Sudden who carried on as "Haas and Sudden" until Dr. Haas left not long afterwards; and John Sudden continued for several years and then disposed of the property to Len. Evans and went to Galt.
