SHANTZ.--On the 28th of January, 1892, near Berlin, Waterloo Co., Ont., of paralytic stroke, Hannah Shantz, widow of Noah C. Shantz, aged 72 years and 11 months. Her remains were laid to rest on the 31st in the Mennonite Cemetery, Berlin. Funeral services were preached by Moses Bowman, Sr., in German, and Bro. David Hostetler, Wayne Co., Ohio, in English. Sister Shantz was a consistent member for over 50 years. She had a desire which the writer feels to add, that is, that her dear children who have not made their peace with God might turn to Jesus who is waiting to give them this new life, and oh, that they may with the rest of the family live christian lives, so that we may all meet as a dear family in the City of God."For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2 Cor. 5: 1. Death of Mrs. Andrew Groff. The many friends of Mrs. Andrew

Groff will learn with deep regret of her death which took place at her home north of Waterloo 6 o'clock Tuesday evening, at the age of 70 years. The funeral take will place at half past nine Saturday morning, March 2nd, from the residence, thence to Martin's meetng house for service and interment.

Mrs Groff, nee Mary Bowman, was the third daughter of the late Henry B. B. Bowman, Blair, and was born September 22nd, 1830. She was married to her now bereaved husband May 30th, 1848. Nine children were the fruit of this marriage all of whom are still living, viz: Henry, of Dundee, Minn; Magdalena, wife of T. B. Snider, Sanborn, Ia; Isaac, Peel township; Israel, Pilkington township; Ephraim, at present in Iowa; Mary wife of Rev Absalom B. Snyder, near Hespeler; Lydia Ann, wife of Abram B. Snyder, on the homestead, Waterloo, and Andrew and Allan, unmarried.

She was a kind and helpful neighbor, s good mother and wife and was universally esteemed. The husband and family will have the heartfelt sympathy of their friends and neighbors in the great loss they have sustained.

Schmitt. - Sister Catharine B. Schantz was born in Waterloo Co., Ont., Aug. 17, 1845; died near German Mills, Ont., Feb. 23, 1917; aged 71 y. 6 m. 6 d. She was married to Bro. Isaac S. Weber Oct. 11, 1864. Bro. Weber met with an accident by being thrown from his buggy on the frozen ground and died Jan. 12, 1897. On Oct. 9, 1898, she was married to Bro. John B. Schmitt, who was also accidentally killed by an electric car on Mar. 23, 1911. Although Sister Schmitt had trials and pains more than average, her faith was strong and she was looked up to as a very exemplary Christian. Funeral on Feb. 25 at the Mennonite Church at Kitchener by the brethren, Isaiah Wismer, Jonas Snider, and Norman Stauffer. Text, II Tim. 4: 6-8. Buried in the adjoining cemetery.

Snyder. - Mary Snyder (nee Shantz) was born in Waterloo Co., Ont., Oct. 6, 1847; died at her home in Waterloo Nov. 25, 1921; aged 74 y. 1 m. 19 d. She united in marriage with Martin B. Snyder, who preceded her about 5 years ago, having born to them a number of grand and great-grandchildren. Sister Snyder united with the Mennonite Church in her youth and was faithful unto death, even through her sickness which lasted several months, often with great pain and distress, yet bearing it patiently, being resigned to the Lord saying, Thy will be done. Funeral services were conducted at the home by Bro. Lewis S. Weber, and at the Waterloo Church by Bro. Jonas Snider.

Bauman. - Peter S. Bauman, son of Solomon Bauman, was born in Huron Co., Ont., Nov. 24, 1858; died Mar. 4, 1928; aged 69 y. 3 m. 9 d. On Oct. 19, 1886, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Bender of Hay Twp., where they resided for 8 years, when they moved to Wilmot Twp. To this union were born 6 sons and 2 daughters of whom 2 sons preceded him in death. He leaves to mourn his departure his beloved widow, 4 sons, 2 daughters, 14 grandchildren, one brother, one sister, and a host of relatives and friends. He was a faithful member of the Latschar Mennonite Church and was possessed of a kindly disposition. He had been in failing health for the past five years and for the past two years was confined to his home. He bore his illness with Christian fortitude. While desiring to stay a little longer with his family, he resigned to his Master's will and passed peacefully away. Funeral services were conducted by Bro. Manasseh Hallman on Mar. 7, at the Latschar Church. Text, I Cor. 2: 9.

Nancy Bauman Sherk was born near Preston, Ont., May 15, 1851; died near Markham, Ont., in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Laura Burkholder; aged 93 y. 4 d. On Dec. 17, 1871, she was united in marriage with Benjamin B. Sherk, who predeceased her May 15, 1929. Bro. and Sister Sherk united with the Mennonite Church soon after they were married and both lived a faithful Christian life until the Lord called them home. Sister Sherk was given to hospitality and Christian witnessing. She was a teacher in the primary department in the Cressman Mennonite Church at Breslau, Ont. for many years. Her home was the home of a number of old people, relatives of the family, until they passed on to glory. The funeral was held on Sunday afternoon from her late home to the Wideman Church for services and the adjoining cemetery for burial. Ministers serving were A. D. Grove and Oscar Burkholder. Text, Psalm 91: 14-16.

Father of Harris Man Dies at Henning, Minn.

Funeral services were held last week for Henry Groff, former resident. of Osceola county, at the church at. Henning, Minn.

Henry Groff was born July 20, 1849, near Galt, Ontario, the oldest of a family of nine children.

When two years old they moved to Waterloo, Ontario. On September 23, 1873, he married Veronica Shantz. They made their home near Elmira, Ontario. To this union four children were born.

In 1889 the family moved to Osceola county, where they lived for nine years. In 18898 they moved to Cottonwood county, Minn., and in 1920 to a farm six miles west of Henning where he lived until the time of his death.

He died July 24, 1935, at the age of 86. He was an active member of the Methodist church.

His wife preceded him in death in September, 1929. Surviving are for children: Edwin of Harris, Iowa. Walter of Henning, Minn., Mary, Mrs. H. H. Norman of Fulda, Minn., Clara, Mrs. J. G. Overholser of Butte, N. D. Surviving also are ten grandchildren; two brothers, Israel of Elmira, Ontario and Andrew of Eldora, Ontario and two susters, Mrs. A. B. Snider of Preston, Ontario and Mrs. T. B. Snider of Spencer, Iowa. - Sibley Gazette.

Mrs. T. B. Snider

Mrs. T. Hewitt, 79 Victoria St., Wateroo, received word from Sanborn, Iowa of the passing at that place of Mrs. T. B. Snider, nee Magdalena Groff, wh odied on Saturday, March 18th, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. C. A. Hakeman in her 88th year. Deceased had been confined to her bed for several months. Funeral services. were held on the following Monday at the late home, when appropriate music was rendered by a mixed quartet. Pallbearers were grandsons of deceased and interment was made in the Roseland cemetery.

The late Mrs. Magdalena Snyder was a daughter of Andrew and Mary Groff and born in Waterloo, Ont., Nov. 18, 1851, and resided in Sanborn with her husband until his death, Oct., 1337 and then with her daughter, Mrs. Hakeman. She married Tilman B. Snider Oct. 24, 1871 and they resided at Waterloo until 1890 when they moved to Sanborn. About 33 years ago Mr. Snider retired from the milling business which he had conducted at Sanborn and they moved to Spencer where he died. we were held for Mr. Snider at his home on their 66th wedding annivesary. Since that time Mrs. Snider lived with her daughters, Mrs. Hakeman and Mrs. Peacock. Surviving are a family of six aughters, and one son, tweve grand- children and eleven great grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Mary Snider and a brother, Andrew Groff. One foster son. Thomas Hewitt, predeceased her in Canada.

Mr. Isaac Groff, who is the oldest cattle dealer on the Elmira market, was born near Waterloo. From his youth he was a good judge of pure-bred and fat cattle and is still conceded to be one of the best informed dealers in Ontario. He has been identified with the Elmira market for a quarter of a century and has bought and shipped an immense number of fat cattle, stockers and sheep. Some of the best fat cattle produced in Ontario, pass through his hands. He covers a large field and makes frequent shipments from Waterloo, St. Jacobs and Alma, besides those he is constantly making to and from Elmira. Although Mr. Groff lives on a farm, some distance west of Elmira, he operates from Elmira and is regarded as one of her most useful business men.

Former Well Known Waterloo County Cattle Breeder and Drover Died Jan. 29.

Word has been received in Waterloo, announcing the death of a former well known Waterloo County citizen,in the person of Isaac B. Groff, which took place at Toronto, on Tuesday, Jan. 29th, in his 75th year. He was a prominent breeder of high grade cattle and a drover. He resided in Toronto the past ten years. A. short service was held at York Burial Company parlors,120 Yonge St. The remains were conveyed to Waterlooon Friday and service will be held at the Waterloo Mennonite Church at 2.30 o'clock p.m., thence to the Martin Meeting House cemetery for burial. His wife predeceased him some years. There survive a family ofseven children, namely: Addison and Irvin of Saskatchewan; Ida (Mrs. Bicherin) of Vancuver, B.C.; Clayton, of Portland, Oregon; Isaac Jr., of Waterloo; Ella and Linnie (Mrs. Palmer) of Toronto; also 8 grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. A. B. Snyder of Preston and Mrs. Tilrnan B. Snyder of Speaces, Iowa and three brothers, Henry of Henning, Minn., Israel of Elmira, and Ameren of Alma.

Mrs. Mary Snyder

HESPELER, Nov. 24. Death occurred at her home, R.R. 2 Preston, on Tuesday, of Mary Groff, widow of the late Rev. A. B. Snyder. Daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Groff, the deceased was a native of Waterloo, She was the last surviving member of her family. In 1891 she married, Absalom B Snyder. She had resided at her R.R. 2 Preston home, for nearly 60 years. Her husband and one daughter, Mrs. Nelson (Martha) Bechtel, predeceased her. She was long a member and active worker In Wanner Mennonite Church. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Chester (Edna) Buschert of Preston; Mrs. Norman (Ida) Snider of Elmira; Emma of Hamilton and two sons, Oliver of Hespeler and Edward of Preston. Thirteen grandchildren also survive. A private service will be held at the late residence, at 2: 30 p.m., tomorrow, with a public service at Wanner Church, at 3 p.m. Interment will be made in the adjoining cemetery.

WEBER. - On Aug. 17, 1899, about one mile north of Waterloo, Waterloo Co., Ontario, Sister Mary Ann, beloved wife of Joseph S. Weber, and oldest daughter of Henry B. Shantz. Her age was 34 years, 8 months and 5 days. She died at the "Berlin-Waterloo Hospital" from the effects of an internal rupture. Signs of her departure manifested itself shortly before she died, time, however, being permitted for her children to come and give her good-bye. By her request her brother was also summoned from his occupation to meet her once more and she pointed him earnestly to Christ for the hope of a glorious hereafter. She arranged for the ministers to preach at her funeral, and gave instruction to warn the people of pride and vanity. She will be greatly missed by her nine children and loving husband, besides the Mennonite Church and neighborhood, where she was a willing helper. Funeral at Martin's M. H. was largely attended, the house being filled; the school house opposite the road also being filled. Service at the church by Bro. Jonas Snyder, (text, Luke 10: 42), and Bro. E. S. Hallman, Text, Phil. 1: 23. The service at the school house was held by the brethren, Samuel S. Bowman and Jacob Woolner, Jr.

WEBER. Hannah Weber, (nee Shantz) wife of Joseph S. Weber, died at her home near Waterloo, Ont., Aug. 16, 1925, at the age of 58 y. 11 m. 16 d. Death was due to Bulbar Paralysis with which she was afflicted for a year or more. It affected her neck and throat to the extent that she could not speak, eat nor drink the last while. She made her wants known by writing. She accepted Christ as her Savior and united with the Mennonite Church in her youth, living a devoted, consistent life, and bore her suffering very patiently, looking forward to the time when she would be relieved from all distress, where sorrow and pain will not be known. She often expressed a desire to depart and be with Christ which was for her far better. Funeral services were held on Aug. 19, at the Waterloo Mennonite Church by the brethren, Oscar Burkholder, Jonas Snider, and Noah Hunsberger. She leaves to mourn her departure, a beloved husband, twelve children, two sisters, five brothers, and twenty-three grandchildren. May God bless and sustain them in their bereavement.

He is survived by 2 daughters (Malinda, wife of Aaron Biehn, Guernsey, Sask.; and Serena, wife of Clayton Eby, Preston), 4 sons (Ivan, Preston; Floyd, Foam Lake, Sask.; Sylvanus, Strasburg; Lloyd, Hespeler), 21 grandchildren, 4 brothers (William and Ananias, Kitchener; Alvin, Waterloo; Samuel, Breslau), and 2 sisters (Mrs. Leander Snyder, Parkway; Mrs. Henry Feick, Doon). He became a member of the Mennonite Church in March, 1891, and was ordained deacon of the Hagey Mennonite Church in 1907, in which capacity he served for 36 years. Funeral services were held, Jan. 14, 1944, at the Hagey Mennonite Church with B. B. Shantz and J. W. Witmer in charge. Burial in adjoining cemetery.

Louis Kramp, for many years a well known Kitchener tailor, died last evening at St. Mary's Hospital in his 81st year after nearly a year of illness. Born at Shantz Station in April, 1857, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Louis Kramp, Mr. Kramp married Lydia Bobzeen, who predeceased him in 1921. He attended St. Matthew's Lutheran church.

One daughter. Mrs. G. Weidenhammer of this city, survives together with one sister. Mrs. C. Reist, three grandchildren and great grandchild, also of Kitchener. One daughter, Mrs. David Bingeman died In 1914.

Public funeral services will be held Sunday at two o'clock at his home, 93 Chestnut street, followed at three o'clock by services at Cressman Mennonite church, Breslau and burial in the Cressman Cemetery. Rev. John Schmieder will be in charge.

Mrs. Harvey W. Schmitt, nee Ida R. Hannenberg, 64, of R.R. 3 Kitchener, Sunnyside, died her home Saturday following a lengthy illness. She was born in Kitchener on Dec. 21 1877 She attended Bethany Mennonite Church.

Forty years ago in Kitchener she married Harvey W Schmitt. who survives. together with three sons, Victor and Carl of Kitchener, Clarence of Williamsburg, four daughters, Mrs. John Bonn of Centreville, Mrs. Edward Fyfe of Kitchener, Mrs. Harvey Zeller of Sunnyside and Mrs Herbert Gole of Breslau Other survivors are one brother. Amsy S. Shantz Amsy S. Shantz of Fairview Mennonite Home in Preston died in the South Waterloo Hospital in Galt Friday after a brief illness. He was 85.

Born in Kitchener, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John C. Shantz, he had lived in Preston for the past two years. He formerly lived at RR 2, Hespeler, and farmed at RR 3, Kitchener. Mr. Shantz was a member of Stirling Avenue Mennonite Church.

Surviving besides his wife, the former Luella Kinzie, whom he married in Breslau in 1915, are one son, J. Clifford of Salem; five daughters, Mrs. Amos (Vera) Kipfer of Manilla, N.Y., Nora of Waterloo,. Mrs. David H. (Alice) Bauman of Flora-dale, Mrs. Stanley (Myrtle) Stricker of Kitchener and Mrs. Russell (Mildred) Scheerer of RR 1, Hespeler and 12 grand-children.

Mr. Shantz was the last surviving member of his family. He was predeceased by four sisters, three brothers and two sons. The body is at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home where Rev. Howard Schmitt of Wanner Mennonite Church will conduct the service on Monday at 3 p.m. Burial will be in Woodland cemetery.

Snyder, Urias, son of the late Martin and Mary Snyder, was born Nov. 30, 1874; died Feb. 7, 1956, at the K & W Hospital after a short illness; aged 81 y. 2 m. 8 d. He was born and raised in the Westside district of Waterloo and also farmed there for many years. He was converted in his early years and united with the David Eby Church, and later the Erb Street Mennonite Church. He also served as church treasurer for many years. He is survived by his second wife, the former Sabina Shantz, a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Lavina Snyder and a granddaughter, Judith Ann Snyder, of Hamilton. Also surviving are 3 brothers (Allan, Bridgeport; Ervin, Kansas City, Kans.; and Milton, London, Ont.), and 2 sisters (Mrs. Alvina Shirk, Bridgeport; and Mrs. Nelson Shuert, Kitchener). He was predeceased by his first wife, Susannah Shantz, in 1928, and by a son, Lorne, in 1949, and a brother and sister. Services were held at the Erb Street Church, conducted by J. B. Martin and Clare Shantz.

Snyder, was born in Waterloo, Ont., Aug. 17, 1876; passed away after a brief illness at the Kitchener-Waterloo Hospital June 24, 1952; aged 75 y. 10 m. 7 d. He was united in marriage to Veronica Snyder, Dec. 20, 1904. Surviving are his wife, 3 sons (Melvin, Etril and Henry, Waterloo, Ont.), one daughter (Reta-Mrs. Arnold Shantz, Guernsey, Sask.), 4 brothers (Allen, Bridgeport, Ont.; Urias, Waterloo, Ont.; Irvin, Kansas City, Mo.; Milton, London, Ont.), and 9 grandchildren. Two sisters (Mrs. Anson Erb and Lynian) predeceased him. Bro. Snyder, when a young man, accepted Christ as his Saviour. He was baptized and united with the Mennonite Church. He was keenly interested in the work of the church, an active Sunday-school superintendent and teacher, and regularly fellowshipped and worshiped at the Waterloo Mennonite Church. Funeral services were in charge of J. B. Martin and Clare Shantz.

Honsberger.-Mary Anne Snyder [should read Lydia Ann], beloved wife of Franklin Honsberger, of Jordan, Ont., passed away at the home of her parents, Bro. And Sister John Snyder of German Mills, Ont. She had been a patient sufferer, but was soon cut off from her useful life and leaves a sorrowing companion and two small children, who have the sympathy of many friends. Funeral services were conducted at the home of Bro. Snyder in Waterloo Co. by Noah Stouffer and Eli Hallman. The corpse was then brought to Jordan to the home from which she had gone last fall and to which she had soon expected to return to be with her beloved family. Funeral services were held on Sunday, when an exceptionally large congregation assembled, it being also the occasion of the funeral services of the above Sister Martin*. On this afternoon within an hour these two bodies were laid away to rest until the day of resurrection. May God give especial comfort to the parents, brothers, sister and beloved companion and children of the esteemed young sister. Services conducted by the ministers J.F. Mrs. Annetta Cressman

Mrs. Annetta Cressman, 76, died suddenly Monday night at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Alvin Gascho, 859 Mill St. Born in Waterloo Township on Aug. 27, 1876, she was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jacob B. Snider. Her husband, Isaiah Cressman, predeceased her on June 8, 1943. She was a member of First United Mennonite Church, Kitchener. Surviving are two sons, Vernon S. and Hilliard of Kitchener; three daughters, Mrs. Elum (Clara) Martin and Mrs. Alvin (Reta) Gascho of Kitchener and Mrs. Uria (Marjorie) Baeringer of St. Catharines and four brothers, Action, Ion of Preston, Harvey of Bloomingdale and Lloyd of Williamsburg. Nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren also survive. One brother, Alvin, and one sister, Lydiann, predeceased her. The body is at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home until 1 p.m. Thursday when removal will be made to the First Mennonite Church. The funeral will be held there at 3 p.m. Burial will be in the Strasburg Mennonite Cemetery. Rev. John Hess will be in charge of the service

MRS. GEORGE B. OBERHOLTZER Mrs. George B. Oberholtzer, of St. Jacobs, passed away on Friday, March 10, after a serious illness lasting for about three months. The deceased was nearly 58 years of age.

Besides her husband, she leaves to mourn her loss, one daughter Florence, Mrs. Harold Trussler, Kirchner, one son, Earl, of Winnipeg; two sisters, Mrs. Bert Dyer, Chatham and Mrs. A. B. Cortez, of Vancouver; three brothers, Clayton Hallman, of Bowmanville; Garfield, of Vancouver, and Oliver of Winnipeg.

The funeral, held Monday afternoon. was largely attended. In the absence of Rev. Hauch, due to illness, Rev. S. R. Knechtly officiated. Taking for his text, Rom. 8, 18, he preached a soul-stirring sermon. The Ladies' Aid, of which Mrs. Oberholtzer was a very valued member, sang two beautiful hymns, which were very touching.

The pall-bearers were: Solomon Eby, Howard Gies, Gordon Henrich, Oscar Good, Harry Garner and Holden Appel. Interment was made in Calvary Cemetery of the Evangelical Church.

Mrs. C. Irvin Stoltz of RR 4, Kitchener died today at the K-W hospital after a lengthy illness. She was 82.

Mrs. Stoltz was the former Clara Bauman, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Peter S. Bauman. She was born at Zurich, Ont., and had been. a resident of the Twin City area for 52 years.

Along with her husband, she farmed at RR 4, Kitchener, for many years.

She was a member of St. James' Lutheran Church, Manheim, the Lutheran Church Women and the Elmdale Women's Institute.

She was predeceased by her husband in 1943.

Surviving are one son, G. Garfield of RR 4, Kitchener; six daughters, Mrs. James (Gladys) Walker and Mrs. George (Ferne) March, both of Hamilton, Mrs. William (Orkney) Veitel of Toronto; Mrs. Ward (Dorothy) Weber of Baden, Mrs. James (Ludena) Wiltse of Waterloo and Mrs. Ralph (Miriam) Quehl of Wellesley; 19 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was the last surviving member of her family and was predeceased by six brothers and one sister.

The body will be at the Ratz-Bechtel. Funeral Home after 2 p.m. Saturday until noon Mon-day. The service will be conducted at St. James Church by Roy. Richard Holm at 3 p.m. Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery.

Lorne; Harold L., who died in May, 1933; Harvey A. and Helen, who died at the age of 5 months. Florence, daughter of Bishop Norman B. Stauffer, was adopted in infancy. Thirteen grandchildren survive. She was a regular attendant and faithful member of the Cedar Grove Mennonite Church, having served as teacher of both Sunday school and summer Bible school. Her life, devoted to God's service, was truly an inspiration to others. Funeral services at Wideman's Church on June 6, were conducted by Emerson McDowell.

John E. Bonner, son of William and Ellen White Bonner, was born July 2, 1866 at New Diggings, Wisconsin and died July 10, 1948 at his home in Sanborn at the age of 82 years and 8 days. His early boyhood was spent in Wisconsin. When a boy of 17 years, he came with his parents to Sanborn, Iowa, where he lived on a farm for several years.

He was married to Arclista Snider on April 18, 1894. They lived in or near Sanborn until 1904, when they went to South Dakota and lived at Frederick and Valley Spring. They returned to Sanborn in 1910 and lived here for three years, then moved to Belmont, Montana, which was their home for thirty years. They then returned in December 1944 to live in Sanborn.

John attended the Methodist church and Church School and with his wife united with St. Andrews Methodist Church of Sanborn, March 8, 1946.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother; three brothers: William L., Robert A., and Charles W.; and two sisters: Jane A., and Elizabeth J.

He leaves to mourn his death: his widow; one brother, Thomas G., of Chokio, Minn.; and three sisters: Miss. Nora M. Dodson, of Waterloo, Iowa, Mrs. Mary Miller and Mrs. Anna Heinsen, both of Sanborn; other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the family home with Rev. H. Milo Hall in charge. A mixed quartet, Miss Gladys Barber, Miss Ardis Riser, A. Ericson and Henry Grooters sang "Rock of Ages" and "Sweet Bye and Bye" without accompaniment. Casketbearors were A. L. Thomas, Guy Melvin, Robert Inman, Louis Smith, John Delan and Kenneth Tifft. Burial was in Roseland Cemetery.

Edna Snider, daughter of Tillman and Magdeline Snider, was born in Ontario, Canada on August 20, 1880. She came to the United States with her parents at the age of 10 years, in 1890, and settled in the Sanborn, Iowa, vicinity. Here she attended school and grew to young womanhood.

She was united in marriage to Clare Hakeman of Sanborn, Iowa on June 10, 1903. Their entire married life was lived in Sanborn where her husband, Clare, was manager of the Sanborn Cooperative Grain Company.

Clare and Edna entered the Prairie View Retirement Home in September of 1967 where they lived until his death January 8, 1969. She continuted to make her home there and passed away there suddenly on December 28, 1975 at the age of 95 years, four months and eight days.

She is survived by three sons: Cornyle and George of Sanborn, Iowa, and James of Wichita, Kansas; two daughters: Mrs. Lawrence (Margaret) Hickey of Sanborn, and Dorothy Foote of Des Moines, Iowa; twelve grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and two great great grandchildren; two sisters: Mabel Higgins of Dequim Washington and Elthen Turner of Seal Beach, California.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Clare on January 8, 1969; one son in infancy; two brothers and two sisters.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Sanborn.

Gertrude M. Skyllingstad died Sunday, July 29, in a hospital at Ventura, California, following a heart attack. Funeral services, under the direction of the Leyson Funeral Home, were held in the Union Memorial Church Friday, August 3. The Rev. John Kirby officiated with burial in the Oko- boji Cemetery at Arnolds Park.

Serving as pallbearers were Elmer Kinkade, Frank Hemphill, Orville Donaldson, Claude Truax, Ralph Hunt all of Milford and Russell King of Spencer. Mrs. Dwight Hemphill and Mrs. Lecter Scott, accompanied by Mrs. E. L. Maas, sang "My God and I". Mrs. Orville Donaldson and Mrs. Frank Hemphill were in charge of floral arrangements.

Bechtel. - Martha, daughter of the late Absalom B. and Mary (Groff) Snyder, was born Feb. 5, 1893; departed this life March 12, 1945; aged 52 y. 1 m. 7 d. On Aug. 22, 1916, she was united in marriage to Nelson Bechtel. To them were born five children: Janet May, Mary Alma, Ruth Evelyn, Dorothy Helen, and George. Surviving are her beloved husband, 5 children, her mother, 2 brothers, 3 sisters, 9 nephews, one niece, and many other relatives and friends. She united with the Mennonite Church at the age of twelve and was deeply interested in its welfare. She rendered effective service in the sewing circles and relief work of the church, and for a time served as president of the Ontario Conference Association. She was kind, co-operative, and a true Christian, loved by her family, church, and community. Funeral services were held at the Wanner Mennonite Church in charge of C. F. Derstine, assisted by S. F. Martha Snyder Bechtel 1893 - 1945

Martha grew up in the midst of congregational activities and when the women in Ontario began organizing, Martha was prepared to fill a role among them.

Wanner Women Organize
Martha Snyder was born on February 5, 1893 to Absolom B. and Mary (Groff) Snyder near Hespeler, Ontario. Her father was ordained a minister shortly before her birth. Church activities and evangelistic meetings in particular, received a great deal of time and energy in the Snyder family. The Snyders were members of the Wanner Mennonite Church. As the oldest in the family, Martha was unable to attend high school, but in the fall of 1913, she enrolled in the academy in Goshen, Indiana. Nelson Bechtel from Hespeler was studying music at Goshen also. Although Martha probably was at Goshen only one year, she was introduced to the wider Mennonite world of mission interest. On December 1, 1915 the Wanner women met at the Absolom Snyder home to organize a women's missionary society. Someone recalled that at this meeting Mary Snyder was in charge, and that Martha coached her mother on how to go about electing officers and voting on other matters. No doubt, the initiative for this venture came from Mabel Groh, a member at Wanner, and whose story is told elsewhere in this book, but it may be that Martha had also received inspiration for women's work at Goshen. At the 1915 meeting, Ada Bechtel was elected president, Martha was on the cutting committee, and Mother Snyder on the visiting committee. At the second organizational meeting in 1916, Martha was elected president, but by that time she was Mrs. Nelson Bechtel. During that first year they sewed for the Kitchener orphanage and supplied mouth wash for the soldiers. Those were the years of World War I.. Martha sometimes also acted spontaneously. The family recalls that one Sunday morning they were on their way to church. Seeing some boys at the river fishing, the Bechtels stopped, and Martha invited them to come to Sunday school. It was also Martha and Mabel Groh who drove around the community with horse and buggy inviting people to church. Daughter Dorothy recalls that Martha made up Christmas baskets for needy families. Whether this was a project of the church or a personal one, she no longer remembers. Daughter Ruth remembers taking food across the fields to an ailing neighbour. When the Mennonite refugees from Russia came in the 1920s, Martha also did special things for them.

The Ontario Women Organize

In the winter of 1936.... vice president, Martha very ably presided over the meeting and was elected president. Martha was serving as president when World War II broke out, and the women began to do a great deal of sewing for relief. Martha did not always feel up to the tasks which her office required, but she was very capable and could do what she set about to do. In 1941 she resigned due to illness. She died on March 12, 1945 at the age of 52. Edna Bowman remembers Martha as very outgoing and friendly. She was tall, blonde, with a striking bearing. When the women were looking for someone to serve on their committee, she was a likely candidate.

SNYDER, Emma

Passed away peacefully, at Fairview Mennonite Home, on Saturday, Nov. 18, 1995, in her 94th year. She was the last member of the Absolam and Mary (Groff) Snyder family. Predeceased by sisters, Martha Bechtel, Edna Buschert, Ida Cressman Snider and brothers, Oliver and Edward G. Snyder. Survived by sister-in-law, Glennys Snyder and brother-in-law, Norman Snider, both of Cambridge. A very special aunt to all her nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. A lifelong member of Wanner Mennonite Church in Cambridge, Emma was also an elementary and much loved nursery school teacher. This quote from Goethe was found in her journal, "To know someone here or there with whom you can feel there is understanding in spite of distances or thoughts unexpressed, that can make of this earth a garden." The family invites relatives and friends to a memorial service on Tuesday. Nov. 21, at 3 p.m. at Wanner Mennonite Church, Beaverdale Road, Cambridge. Reception to follow at the church.

BOYLE, Luella - On December 23, 2006, at the age of 101. Lue was born on May 22, 1905, in Waterloo Township to Sarah Heckendorn and Allan Groff and raised by Gilda Groff, Allan Groff's second wife. She was sister to Doris Adye-White (Mississauga), Ruth Doepel (deceased), Ken Groff (Vancouver), Norman Groff (deceased), and Frank Groff (deceased). Although she and her late husband Harry Boyle loved to travel, they made their home in Kitchener on Van Camp Ave. Harry died in 1981 after a long life. Harry had spent his working life at Goodrich and had served with the South Waterloo Overseas 111th Battalion of the Western Ontario Regiment of the Canadian Expeditionary Force and was wounded at Passchendaele. Lue had been a member of the Highland Baptist Church and St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church as well as a member of the Tommy Atkins Chapter I.O.D.E. She loved golf and played many rounds at the Grand River Golf Club in Bridgeport. Bridge was another of her passions and although they had no children, there was always a dog in the family. During her lifetime she did a considerable amount of volunteer work. Cremation has taken place. Expressions of sympathy may be shown by donations to a charity of one's choice.

At the K-W Hospital, on Tuesday, October 10, 1978, after a brief illness, Fred M. Snyder, aged 80 years, of 350 Lexington Rd., Waterloo. Mr. Snyder was a son of the late Abram Snyder and the former Lydia Anne Groff.

He lived most of his life on the Snyder homestead on Lexington Road in Waterloo. Mr. Snyder was a prominent Holstein breeder and was past president of the Canadian Holstein Friesian Association. He was a member of First United Church, Waterloo, a former member of the Waterloo Lions Club, the Retired Professional Businessmen's Club and the Waterloo Chamber of Commerce. He was a founding member of the Doon Pioneer Village and past president of the Waterloo North Provincial Liberal Association. He was active in many community projects and charitable organizations.
