    Notes:

    FRIEDRICH RITTINGER

It is our painful duty to bring news of the death of Mr. Friedrich Rittinger, co-editor of the "Journal" to our readers. Last week, a kidney ailment, which had recurred periodically in the last few years reappeared and last Sunday night, it developed into a kidney infection which daily became increasingly worse and ended on Tuesday afternoon at 2: 10pm with his death. He suffered the painful illness with patience and trust in God, spoke consolingly and full of hope with his wife and children who surrounded his bed and was fully conscious until shortly before his end.

The deceased was born December 6, 1833, in Michelbach, Grand Duchy of Baden and came to Canada in 1847 with his father, 2 brothers and one sister. They landed in Quebec and lived for a time in Cornwall and Morrisburg. In 1848, they came to this area and the deceased was apprenticed to Mr. Henry Eby, printer, who published the "Deutscher Kanadier". Several years later the printery went into the ownership of Mr. Peter Eby, who founded the "Berlin Telegraph", the first issue of which was printed by the deceased.

In the autumn of the year 1859, he left this business and went into a business partnership with Mr. J. Motz for the publication of the "Berliner Journal", the first issue of which appeared on December 29, 1859.

Since that time, he was the first and the last in on every work day in the office; with the exception of 2 rather short illnesses a few years ago, until his last sickness developed. When he was not occupied with book-keeping or correspondence, then he stood from morning to night at the letter-case; he did nothing else but this.

With his death, the busy, active life of a circumspect, pleasant business-man, of an honest, friendly, business partner came to an end. The author of these lines, who stood close to him for 38 years, knows what he has lost in him. The loss will be especially painfully felt by the deeply saddened widow, to whom he was a loyal, helpful husband, and by his children, who looked up to him as a loving and caring father. He was generally loved and respected on account of his modest and gentle nature.

In religious matters, he was a practical, Lutheran Christian, and yet tolerant of other believers. In regard to friendship and love he recognized no differences in confessions of faith. He was one of the founders of the St. Peter's congregation here and served it for many years as a governor, treasurer and Sunday-school superintendent and teacher. He played an active part in the building of the first and second churches of this congregation and helped solve the problems which arose during these circumstances honestly.

The deceased was married May 14, 1854 to Elizabeth Geiger. From this marriage, 7 children were born, of whom 3 died very young. Those who are still living are: John A. publisher of the "Ontario Glocke" in Walkerton; William and Herman, in the "Journal" press and Lizzie, wife of Pastor Julius Badke in Humberstone.

It is worth noting, that he moved into the house on October 14, 1867, from which he was carried out, 30 years later, namely on October 14, 1897. His burial will take place today, Thursday, at 2pm. The body will be carried from the house of mourning to St. Paul's Church and then, after the service, will be buried in Mount Hope Cemetery. Friederich Rittinger and John Motz, then young men, issued on the 29th day of December, 1859, the first number of the "Berliner Journal," a weekly newspaper, which soon became, as it remains to this day, in the second generation of the firm of Rittinger & Motz, the principal German newspaper in Canada.

Friederich Rittinger was born in the Grand Duchy of Baden in 1833. His mother died early. In 1847 he came with his father, two brothers and a sister, to Canada, landing in Quebec, and soon made his way to the German settlement in Berlin, Canada West. Here, when still under fourteen years of age, he became printer's apprentice to Henry Eby, the publisher of the 'Deutche Canadier." For several years part of the boy's work was the delivery of this paper to subscribers in Waterloo and Wilmot townships. As printer and general assistant Rittinger remained with the " Deutche Canadier " until the " Journal " was begun, this becoming his life work. He died in 1897.

    SOUND PRINCIPLES IN PROSPECTUS

The first issue of the Berliner journal, published by Rittinger & Motz, Berlin, Ontario, made its appearance on December 29, 1859. The prospectus reads as follows:

"The publishers undertake to meet all requirements from week to week by way of placing before their readers all important news in a fair, open and impartial manner. Their efforts are directed to promote the life and activity, growth and progress of Canada, and particularly that of Berlin and Waterloo county.

"In regard to religion the publishers will strictly adhere to I the principle of tolerance in all matters pertaining to faith and freedom of conscience. Each one expects to gain salvation in his own particular manner, and it is a comfort to him to be treated with indulgence.

"Politically the paper will take an independent stand. Each of the two existing parties in Canada, Conservative and Reform, has its own particular good and evil inclinations and therefore we cannot give an unrestricted decision. In general the paper will favor the Reform party, without, however, obliging itself to sing the praises of those belonging to that party, whether merited or not.

"In 'matters of public concern we will at all times express our views in an unconcealed manner, but will also be ready to learn from others, and our paper will be at the disposal of those who wish to discuss rationally matters of public interest.

"And thus today we pass into the hands of our honored subscribers our first issue with the assurance that we will honestly endeavor to justify the confidence placed in us. Wishing our readers a happy New Year, we commend ourselves to their kind disposal and well-wishing.".

RITTINGER, JOHN ADAM, editor, publisher, and humorist; b. 16 Feb. 1855 in Berlin (Kitchener), Upper Canada, son of Friedrich Rittinger and Elisabeth Geiger; m. 22 Jan. 1877 Mary Jane Rogerson (Rodgerson) in Owen Sound, Ont., and they had one son; d. 29 July 1915 in Kitchener.

John Adam Rittinger was educated at the College of St Jerome in Berlin. After graduation he was apprenticed in his father's firm, Rittinger and Motz, publishers of the weekly Berliner Journal [see John Motz], and then obtained a journeyman's training in the newspaper and publishing business in Guelph, Toronto, Buffalo, New York, and Chicago. He returned to Ontario and in 1875, in partnership with Aaron Eby, acquired the weekly Walkerton Glocke. He became sole owner and editor of the paper in 1878 and changed its name in 1882.

Friedrich Rittinger died in 1897 and John Adam succeeded him as a partner in Rittinger and Motz. In 1904 the Ontario Glocke amalgamated with the Berliner Journal, though an edition of the Journal continued to be published with the Ontario Glocke masthead; Rittinger moved to Berlin and became "political and responsible" editor of the Journal, which he now published with John Motz's son, William John. It prospered and by 1909, when it sold more than 5,000 copies every week, Rittinger and Motz had absorbed, with one exception, all other German-language newspapers in Ontario.

As a journalist, Rittinger was keenly interested in public affairs. He argued that Canadian patriotism and the maintenance and promotion of the German language and culture were not only compatible but desirable. It was in the letters he wrote under the pseudonym Joe Klotzkopp from 1890 onwards in the Ontario Glocke and the Berliner Journal that he expressed his views most effectively. The publishing of texts in the Pennsylvania-German dialect common among German Canadians in southwestern Ontario was a tradition at the time for German-language newspapers, and letters were published under various noms de plume in almost all of them. Although Rittinger was not himself of Pennsylvania-German descent and acquired the dialect as an adult, the Klotzkopp letters, 120 in all, became the most favoured of these writings. The letters, which in their humour can be compared to writings by Thomas Chandler Haliburton* and Stephen Butler Leacock*, for the most part deal with matters of public concern. Less often, Rittinger wrote letters and poems of an occasional type, such as a description of his son's birthday party. Despite their thematic restrictions, the Klotzkopp letters, in their linguistic and stylistic treatment of themes and in their humoristic mode of narration, are outstanding examples of a specific literary genre and testimonials of 19th-century German Canadian thinking and affairs.

    Notes:

    Finally Released Nellie Rittinger

After three months of an often very painful sickness, Nellie Rittinger, the oldest daughter of Mr. William Rittinger, was released by death, the previous Wednesday afternoon. The deceased took sick with nervous problems in the beginning of January. Almost every day during the course of the sickness, she had incidents of vomiting, and her strength became weaker and weaker. Her suffering became more and more serious, even though various physicians were consulted and nothing was left untried, in order to give the patient relief. Everything, however, was in vain.

The death of her nine-month-old little sister Lillian, three weeks ago, had a detrimental effect on the sick Nellie. The day before her death, she asked the doctor herself, if he had any hope for her recovery and demanded a definite answer from him. With resignation, just as she had born all her suffering, she accepted the "No." answer. On Wednesday, she took communion. In the afternoon, the incidents of nausea began again, and about 5 o'clock, she seemed to fall peacefully asleep. Before anyone became aware of it, eternal sleep had begun and the sufferer had entered into a better life beyond.

Burial took place Saturday afternoon. The funeral service took place in St. Peter's Lutheran Church, where the girls' choir sang several moving songs. Burial followed in the town cemetery. Pastor Badke's wife and her sons came from Humberston and Mrs. J. Rittinger of Walkerton came for the funeral service, as well as many friends of the family from St. Jacobs, Elmira, Hespeler, Baden, Waterloo, Bridgeport, Petersburg, etc. The flower arrangements on the coffin were especially beautiful and numerous.

Pastor J. Badke, uncle of the deceased, dedicated the following obituary to her: (poem follows).
