Mrs. Elizabeth Israel - One of Kitchener's oldest residents, Mrs. Elizabeth Israel, 94, died at her residence 19 Mill St., Saturday. The daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Schweitzer, she was born at Sebringville, Aug. 1, 1852, and was a member of the Zion Evangelical Church and the Ladies' Aid Society. Her husband, Michael Israel, died 23 years ago. Surviving are two sons, Allen, Stockton, Man., and Vernin, Winnipeg, Man.; three daughters, Mrs. David Schmitt, and Mrs. Reuben Weber, Kitchener, Mrs. Ezra Becker, Williamsburg, one sister, Mrs. Isaac Lautenschlager, Toronto, and 16 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. The remains are resting at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home where the funeral service will be held Tuesday at 3: 30 p.m. Interment will be made in the Mt. Hope Cemetery. Rev. E. E. Hallman will officiate.

Kitchener Woman Killed on Highway

Mrs. Clara Schmitt Was Hurrying Across Road; Two Others Injured - A Kitchener Woman was killed and two district residents injured in two Saturday night road accidents in the county. Mrs. Clara Schmitt, 71, of 188 Benton St., was almost instantly killed when struck by a car in front of the Grand River Tea Rooms on the Preston highway at 10 pm.

She was hurrying across the road to catch the bus into Kitchener when she was struck by a car being driven toward Preston by Frederic White, 45, of 23 Brant Place, Galt.

Worked at Tea Rooms

Provincial Constable Lorne Rutherford investigated and reported that Mrs. Schmitt, who was a part-time worker at the restaurant, had left in company with a fellow worker, Mrs. Alma Knechtel of Bridgeport. Her companion told the unfortunate woman to wait on the side of the road and that she would cross and flag the bus. Mrs. Knechtel said that she was about over the road she heard a bump and turned to see Mrs. Schmitt just after the car had hit her.

Started to Turn Back

The injured woman suffered a compound fracture of one leg and a fracture skull. Dr. J.G. Ross was called and pronounced life extinct. No charges have been laid and no inquest will be held, police said today. White told police that the woman ran suddenly in front of his car, seemed to sense her danger and was turning to run back when struck. He was unable to swerve to the left to avoid her because of the bus. The late Mrs. Schmitt was born in Strasburg in 1877. She was married to David E. Schmitt in Heidelberg, in 1906.

Besides her husband, she is survived by one son Cecil of Toronto; two daughters, Miss Ruby and Mrs. Edgar (Effie) Ritz of Kitchener; two brothers, Allan Israel of Stockton, Man., and Vernon Israel of Winnipeg; two sisters, Mrs. Ezra Becker of Williamsburg, and Mrs. Reuben Weber of Kitchener, and one grandson.

The funeral will be held on Wednesday at 2 pm at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home. Rev. E.E. Hallman will officiate, assisted by Rev. Earl Lautenslager of Toronto. Interment will be made in Woodland Cemetery.

The body is resting at the funeral home.

Becker, Maxwell Israel, son of Ezra and Mary Ann (Israel) Becker, was born in Manheim, Ont., Aug. 27,1904; died of a heart attack at Kitchener, Ont., July 25, 1986; aged 81 y. On Sept. 2, 1936, he was married to Florence Shantz, who survives. Also surviving are one son (Bruce), one daughter (Barbara Schlegel), and 6 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter (Linda). He was a member of Stirling Avenue Mennonite Church, where funeral services were held on July 29, in charge of Vernon Leis; interment in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Frederick Becker

Frederick Harry Becker of 94 Brentwood Ave., died on Sunday of last week at the Toronto General Hospital. He was 60.

Mr. Becker was born in Williamsburg and lived in the Twin City area all his life. He worked for 26 years for Superior Box Ltd. He was a member of Bethany United Missionary Church.

Surviving are his wife, the former Loreane Susan Kinzie; two daughters, Mrs. Garry (Joan) Kutt of Kitchener, Joyanne of Toronto; a brother, Max of Kitchener; two sisters, Mrs. Lorne (Ethel) Fried of New Dundee and Mrs. Henry (May) Schrieber of Ayr; two grandchildren.

His first wife, the former Dorothy Thoman, died in 1965. He was also predeceased by his parents Mr. and Mrs. Ezra Becker.

Funeral services were held last Wednesday at the Ratz- Bechtel Funeral Home, Rev. C.E. Hunking officiating.

Burial was in Woodland cemetery.
