    Notes:

    A SAD SCENE

On Tuesday evening the 9th of August about 7 o'clock Bro. Allen Eby, son of Eld. Amos Eby, and Bro. Simon Moyer, son of Jonas Moyer, both living near Berlin, Waterloo Co., Ontario, were killed by lightning while standing under a tree. They had gone out into the field to plow after supper, and after having plowed a few rounds, they saw a shower coming and they sought shelter under a tree in the adjoining field where the lightning struck them and instantly killed both. Their wives, after hearing the severe stroke, went out to see if it had struck the barn, and while thus looking they saw the horses running in the field, and not seeing the men they went in search for them, and found them lying under the burning tree. What a shock must this have been, to find their dear husbands lifeless before them. They lald them to one side and went after help. Allen Eby's age was 27 years, 10 months and 21 days. He leaves a widow with one child to mourn their loss.

Moyer's age was 26 years, 5 months and 20 days. He leaves a widow to mourn her loss. They were buried side by side in the Eby Cemetery, Berlin, on the 11th of August. This was the saddest funeral we ever witnessed. The entire community was stirred, and all seemed to deply sympathize with these two young widows and breaved friends. It is estimated that over 1,500 people were present at the burial. The services were conducted by Eld. H. Goudie at the house, and H. S. Hallman and Eld. Yaeger at the church. What a blessed thing it is to be ready. Then let death come by lightning or any other way, and it will be all right. - Gospel Banner.

    Notes:

Louisa (Louise) was the second of six children born to Amos Eby (1842-1923) and Esther Eby, née Moyer (1838-1930). She was born in Waterloo Township, Ontario, where her father was a farmer. In 1870, the family moved to a farm in Maryborough Township, Wellington County.

Louisa married Edwin S. Snider in 1897. At the time, Edwin worked for his uncle, Dilman Shantz, at the Jacob Y. Shantz & Son Company, a button factory in Buffalo, New York.

The 1900 United States Census finds Louise, Edwin, and a one-year-old daughter, Helen G., living in Rochester, New York. Edwin was a foreman in a button factory. This factory was operated by another of Edwin's uncles, Moses Shantz.

By the time of the 1910 census, Edwin, Louise, Helen, and a son, Roswell, lived in Newstead, New York. Edwin's occupation was noted as superintendent in a button factory.

The 1920 census shows that the family had returned to Rochester. The household included Edwin (age 47), Louise (50), and children, Helen G. (21), Roswell E. (18) and Edwin's mother, Lucinda Snider (71). Edwin was a superintendent in a button factory.

In 1930, Edwin, Louise, and her mother, Esther Eby, lived in Ferndale, Cambria County, Pennsylvania. Edwin was listed as a button manufacturer. By this time, Helen and Roswell were living in New York City, where Helen was a musician, and Roswell, a scenic designer.

Louisa died in Cambria County, Pennsylvania, in 1937. She was buried in the First Mennonite Cemetery, Kitchener, Ontario, near the graves of her parents, Amos and Esther Eby.

Although both "Edwin S. Snider" and "Louisa Eby" are inscribed on the gravestone, it is uncertain whether he is buried at that spot, since his birth and death years (unlike his wife's dates) have not been added. The inscription for Helen G. Snider is on the back of the stone.

BRESLAU HAS ITS HEART APPEAL FOR ONE OF HER ABSENT SONS

Noah M. Moyer of Philadelphia, formerly of Breslau, and well known in Kitchener, in a letter writing contest conducted by the Philadelphia Daily News recently captured first prize with a brief letter relative to his "home town." The letter is as follows: Editor Daily News:

If you haven't a real love for the old home town, cultivate one. I am now around the half-century mark and there is no place that I would rather go than my little Canadian village of 150 inhabitants.

For some years I have made my annual visits there. I have walked down the streets of most of our large cities but there is no street that gives me such a thrill as the one and only street in that old home town.

Let me take you to the old mill with its old-fashioned water wheel, then to the old general store, where we used to spend our
coppers, and next up the hill to the old school house with the same old bell ringing as it always did.

Those are all sacred spots to me, but the best of all is the old home with mother in the doorway.

    N. M. MOYER, 318 8. Broad St.

Millar was born in Los Gatos, California, and raised in his parents' native Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, where he started college. When his father abandoned his family unexpectedly, Macdonald lived with his mother and various relatives, moving several times by his sixteenth year. The prominence of broken homes and domestic problems in his fiction has its roots in his youth.

Flash From the Past: Famous 20th century private eye is rooted in Kitchener

Which Kitchener author has sold the most books? *

By rych mills Special to the Record

Incorrect guesses have ranged from Edna Staebler (Schmecks) to David Morrell (Rambo); from David Chilton (Wealthy Barber) to Mabel Dunham (Trail of the Conestoga). The actual winner isn't readily recognizable because only four early novels bore his real name - Kenneth Millar. His primary nom-de-plume is more familiar \emdash Ross Macdonald. But his private eye's name gives the game away \emdash Lew Archer.

Through 18 novels, numerous short stories, radio productions and several films (two starring Paul Newman as Lew Harper), Archer became the dominant private investigator during the late 1940s to mid-1970s

And Archer's roots curl back here to Kitchener.

Biographies by Tom Nolan, Matthew Bruccoli, Paul Nelson and Kevin Avery cover Millar's entire career. Each outlines the Kitchener years but Nolan devotes 40 pages to an exhaustive look at Ken's Kitchener world ... and it's not a pretty picture.

Growing up with dysfunctional, separated parents, Millar (1915-1983) spent several periods in Kitchener, as well as California, Vancouver, Medicine Hat, Winnipeg and Wiarton. In 1920, Annie Moyer Miller brought young Ken to her mother's house at 32 Brubacher, a dour, repressive environment that Ken evaded as much as possible. Not quite a stereotypical juvenile delinquent, Ken could be labelled a juvenile bookworm delinquent. He frequented pool halls, gambling rooms (yes, even in 1920s Kitchener) as much as bookstores and the Kitchener Public Library (KPL).

The most famous story \emdash perhaps apocryphal although I prefer to believe it \emdash combines both sides of his addictions. One day at MacCallum's billiard parlour/newsstand he discovered a hard-hitting crime novel by Dashiell Hammett. Later, he asked KPL's Mabel Dunham why Hammett's books were not stocked. They were, she said, but in a restricted area not accessible to the public. While Ken's intellectual mind was outraged, his criminal mind was engaged. After closing, he snuck in, found KPL's restricted area with authors such as Faulkner, Hemingway, Flaubert and Hammett and grabbed an armful. On the way to grandmother's home, he symbolically dumped them into a sewer.

For two years, Ken attended Kitchener Collegiate during which he contributed to the school yearbook, the Grumbler, as both author and literary editor. In 1931, his first published story "South Sea Soup Company" was a Conan Doyle send-up featuring "Herlock Sholmes." In 1932, he was listed on the Grumbler's editorial staff and in "Zuider Zee" introduced "Philo France," to lampoon Philo Vance, a popular New York gumshoe. His final Grumbler story, "To the Damned Their Due," featured an escaped murderer parachuting from a plane only to perish on hydro wires.

After graduating, although motivated by teachers such as Cy Philp and Bill Archer, Ken had no immediate prospects so spent a year working on a farm. Fortunately for his future \emdash and the future of literature \emdash Ken's feckless father died in May 1933 and his insurance policy bought Ken four years of college. During his sole year at Waterloo College, he contributed numerous articles to the school's paper The Cord. Realizing that the small college's faculty knew less than he did, Ken transferred to Western in London for a five-year course in history and English. Again, his knowledge of literature outpaced his professors. The day after graduating from Western, Ken and Kitchenerite Margaret Sturm married and one year later they had a daughter, Linda. Further studies at the University of Michigan led to his doctorate and eventual recognition as one of that university's all-time outstanding graduate students.

Ken and Margaret lived and wrote in California until they died in 1983 and 1994. Three times, they returned to hometown Kitchener, 1948, 1955 and 1971.

Locally, only the Kitchener Public and University of Waterloo libraries have circulating copies of Nolan's book but there are new and used copies on the internet where numerous sites also detail his private and public lives. Although he dropped his surname, it accompanied Ken's writing career step-by-step: his wife Margaret (Sturm) Millar actually authored more mystery novels than her husband over a longer time, 1941 through 1986.

Footnote: * I realize the definition of "Kitchener author" is a moving target: born here? lived here? moved here? educated here? family roots here? Take your pick, but Kenneth Millar can answer yes to four of those five.

    Notes:

Ross Macdonald is the pseudonym of the American-Canadian writer of crime fiction Kenneth Millar (December 13, 1915 – July 11, 1983). He is best known for his series of hardboiled novels set in southern California and featuring private detective Lew Archer.

LONG ISLAND JOURNAL; In a Household of Music, Finding a Voice

By MARCELLE S. FISCHLER Published: October 28, 2001

MUSIC and art have always been intertwined in the Wood household.

At 80, Paul Wood is a prolific artist, a stained-glass maker from a family of wood sculptors, tapestry-makers and sanctuary designers. He has transformed bits of colored glass into lofty stained-glass windows at more than 100 synagogues, churches and libraries, including 34 on Long Island. His wife, Jacqueline, 70, is a pianist and piano teacher.

Growing up in their Port Washington home, Mark Wood, now 44 and an electric violinist, composer and inventor, had a string quartet with his three brothers. Stephen, now 47, and Paul M., 43, also played violin. Greg, now 46, was the cellist. Every night before they went to bed, they would ask their mother to play pieces by Chopin and Schumann. Enamored, their father painted scenes of the living-room recitals.

''I never knew growing up what kind of an incubator this was,'' said Mark Wood, sitting in the art-filled living room of his parents' home recently. ''Three of us became professional musicians.''

While Stephen and Greg Wood stuck to classical, and Paul Wood chose another route and is a filmmaker working in computers, Mark Wood searched for his own voice.

''I was so fascinated by wood and sculpting wood,'' he said. ''I was also fascinated by the violin.'' He built his first electric violin in junior high school.

He trained with Leonard Bernstein at Tanglewood and at Juilliard, but yearned for the sounds of Led Zeppelin, the Beatles and Van Halen. Instead of dropping the violin and playing the guitar, he added additional strings to the violin and became a rock violinist.
As a young adult, he slept on the floor of his father's woodworking shop and art studio. ''My education was smelling, hearing,'' Mark Wood said. ''Hearing the brushes stroke, smelling the turpentine and the sawdust smells at night when I would go and build violins in the woodshop. It was a 24-hours-a-day absorption.''

Mr. Wood calls himself ''the first heavy metal violinist.'' He has a violin-making shop in Huntington and fiddles on his own patented line of mutant-looking violins that have names like Viper, Sabre, Stingray and the Violator but produce sounds like a Stradivarius one moment, Jimi Hendrix the next.

He also has four solo albums, performed a duet on tour with Celine Dion two years ago, collaborated with Billy Joel on ''All About Soul'' and worked with Lenny Kravitz and Everclear. He received Emmy nominations for composing the theme music for the 1998 Winter Olympics for CBS and for an ABC documentary.

''I'm finding at this point in my life that every part of the disciplines that I grew up with -- art, music, wood sculpture -- created a sort of a nucleus of one person's career,'' Mr. Wood said. ''I am able to combine all these disciplines together.''

Six months ago, Mr. Wood was helping his father move his paintings and artwork to a new, revolving but permanent gallery at Temple Emanuel of Great Neck, where the artist installed 600 square feet of stained glass in 1996. Mark Wood suddenly realized that show needed to be about more than art.

''It hit me that I should write music specifically inspired by his paintings since I grew up seeing them and smelling them and feeling them and experiencing them,'' Mark Wood said.

Paul Wood was born in Canada, part of a line of architects and builders that dates to 1610. His father, Albert Wood, was Henry Ford's architect in Detroit. When the Depression hit, Albert Wood piled his seven children and his wife into a car and drove to New York. Later, he opened a handmade furniture, architectural and artistic business, Albert Wood and Five Sons, in Port Washington and found a niche in church building.
Paul Wood joined the family firm as a portrait painter. When church work dwindled, the specialty became synagogues. Paul Wood first designed the stained glass in watercolor, soon learning to do the craftsmanship himself. In the past five years, he has done windows at Young Israel of West Hempstead and Young Israel of Long Beach and a circular mosaic at his own church, Our Lady of Fatima, in Manorhaven.
He never stopped painting. At his Great Neck studio, he is working on a six-by-nine-foot painting of the parting of the Red Sea and does watercolors at home. The lyrical collection has three familiar themes: music, family and spirituality.

Mark Wood spent hours trying to figure out what his father's paintings would sound like. Then he recorded ''Portrait of an Artist'' with the Grammy-winning producer Adam Abeshouse. A double string quartet, including Mark and Greg Wood, will perform contemporary chamber music at his father's opening reception today at 4 p.m. at Temple Emanuel. Mark Wood's wife, Laura Kaye, will do the vocals.

''The musical language is a direct plug in to this artwork,'' Mark Wood said. ''I wanted to be as emotional as the paintings were and the way you do that is through melody and harmony.''

The chamber compositions are unplugged, acoustical movements that draw on his classical background but are influenced by rock and jazz.
''I enjoyed immensely really separating myself as a composer and letting the music come from somewhere above and filter through me, grabbing onto all the experiences that I had as a child, growing up in the family and seeing his work,'' he said.1

    Artist Paul Wood Dies

Longtime Port Washington resident and distinguished artist and teacher Paul Wood passed away on Sunday August 24. He was with his family and in the home that he built with his wife over 50 years ago.

Paul Wood was born in Canada in 1922, part of a line of architects and builders that dates to 1610. His father, Albert Wood, was Henry Ford's architect in Detroit until the depression when the family came to New York, discovered Port Washington, and ultimately set up what was to become the successful family handmade furniture, architectural and artistic business, Albert Wood and Five Sons.

Drafted into the army in 1943, Paul was stationed in Hawaii where he became the artist at his post and did more than 50 portraits and murals over the course of two years. In addition, Paul received the Army commendation ribbon. His portrait work continued long after the war and graces many law libraries, corporations, and private collections.

Mr. Wood studied at the Art Students' League and the National Academy of Design, and in 1948, he established an art school in Port Washington, where he taught his unique method of painting for more than 50 years. He was the long-time head of the Art Council at the Port Washington Public Library where one of his large mosaics is on display.

He was well versed in numerous artistic mediums, including oils, watercolors, mosaics and stained glass. He designed stained glass windows, mosaics and tapestries for more than one hundred churches and synagogues in almost every state. His book on stained glass crafting was the first definitive work on the art; and he followed it up with three more on similar themes and one on painting. His highly original watercolors evolved later in his career and are musings on life, love, family, and the world around him.

A permanent exhibition of his artwork can be found at the Paul Wood Gallery at Temple Emanuel in Great Neck, dedicated in 2001. This show is the cumulative representation of Paul's lifetime of creative work and is a summation of his themes of family, faith, and love. The entire sanctuary was designed and installed in 1996 from Paul's creative and spiritual vision in collaboration with Rabbi Robert Widdom, and is an inspiration to everyone.

Mr. Wood described himself as follows: "My basic philosophy is that art is an extension of a person and therefore it's the most personal form of expression. The impetus of my paintings is to share my feelings of joy, wonder, and enthusiasm. I'd like to leave a beautiful trace behind me, in living and affecting other people." Paul Wood's dream has certainly been fulfilled and will live on through his work and his family. His soul illuminates everything and everyone he has ever touched with an aura of wonder and joy. He had the innate ability of finding humor in every facet of his life. His integrity as an artist was matched only by his integrity as a man.

He is survived by his beloved wife Jacqueline to whom he was married for 50 years; his four sons Steven, Gregory, Mark, and Paul; and five grandchildren, Ryan, Adrianne, Zachary, Jacob, and Elijah.

Visitation is on Friday August 29, 2003 at Knowles Funeral Home located at 128 Main Street in Port Washington, New York. The hours will be in the afternoon from 2: 00 p.m. to 4: 00 p.m. and in the evening from 7: 00 p.m. to 9: 00 p.m.

Mass will be at 11: 30 a.m. on Saturday August 30, 2003 at Our Lady of Fatima on Manorhaven Blvd. in Port Washington, New York.
A special memorial service will be held on Sunday September 28 2003 at 12: 00 p.m. at Temple Emanuel on Hicks Lane in Great Neck, New York.2
