In 1834 a new set of township officers was created. These were the "fence viewers" whose job it was to settle disputes between neighbours as to the value of fencing provided by a neighbour, i.e. If livestock broke a fence down and caused damage to another's fields the fence viewer would decide if the fence had been up to standard and to what extent the damage was and how much money was owing in compensation. (Prior to 1834 this had been the job of the "Overseers of Highways", who checked roads, fences, ditch draining etc. and decided what maintenance work was needed and who was to help. The Overseer had complete control over who in his division was to help and called upon persons had to go and bring whatever tools were requested by the Overseer.) Fence viewers also had to settle disputes over drainage.

In January 1837 Isaac and Jacob Shantz Jr. were appointed Fence viewers for the Lower Part of Waterloo, east of the Grand River, Daniel Stauffer was for Lower Part of Waterloo west of the Grand River, Philip Bleam was for Preston and Adam Winters was appointed for the village of Waterloo.

By 1861 most of the family had moved from the district and none show up in the 1861 assessment.

On October 30th, 1830, he was married to Nancy Stauffer who was born August 4th, 1811, and died May 13th, 1843. After her decease he was married to Catharine Reichert, April 30th, 1844. She was born in this county, May 15th, 1811. After his marriage he resided on a farm near that of his father's where he remained several years. Being persuaded by some parties to quit the life of an husbandman and begin that of an inn-keeper, he left the farm now in possession of James Cowan and moved to Dundas where he took possession of the old hotel known as 'Peter Bomberger's', a great resort for travellers from all parts of the northern and western counties. But being brought up to the business of agriculture he soon became so disgusted with the life of 'innkeeping' that after the short stay of six months he disposed of his business in Dundas and returned to Waterloo, the county of his adoption. After his return he settled in Wilmot Township, several miles west of New Dundee, on the farm now in possession of John Master, his grandson. From here he moved to Plattsville, Oxford County, where he resided until 1891, thence to Berlin where he and his aged partner are spending the evening of their lives with their son Isaac, ex-M. P. P. Here they have a pleasant home and the loving care of all. To him and his first wife was born a family of six children"

    ELLIS, MARY (Nee Masters)

On May 7, h 1909 at 28 Kenilworth Crescent in East Toronto, aged 89 years, 2 days. Widow of Edward Ellis. Mrs. Ellis was well known in Hespeler and the immediate surrounding country. She and her husband moved onto their bush farm in Puslinch, now owned by John Ross, away back in the 1840's and for over forty years, experienced the hardships of pioneer life. But reverses and difficulties were met by this good lady with Christian cheerfulness, fortitude and patience, which were prominent qualities in her makeup. She was a staunch and devoted member of the Methodist Church and always did whatever lay in her powerto advance its interests, both financially and otherwise. When the Ellis Church was being built back in the 1850's on a corner of the Ellis farm, which was freely given for that purpose, she was actively giving a helping hand and boarded gratuitously several of the workmen engaged in the work on the little stone church by the Lake. The Ellis Church is a standing monument to her memory and that of other well known settlers in that locality, who have since passed to their reward. After disposing of their Puslinch home, Mr. and Mrs. Ellis lived retired for a number of years in a comfortable home near St. George. Mrs. Ellis was foster-mother of Mrs. Mills, wife of Rev. William Mills, who was pastor of the Hespeler Methodist Church back in the 1880's and is now residing in Toronto. Many of the older Hespeler citizens will remember Mrs. Ellis since that time. Self-sacrificing and charitable, hers was a life of real usefulness. On Saturday, May 8th, her body was conveyed by G. T. R. to St. George and interred beside her husband in that beautiful cemetery. A large gathering of old friends and acquaintances attended, amongst them, Mr. and Mrs. Knowles from Hespeler.

-Daughter of Isaac Masters and Mary Clemens.
