Death of Mrs. Leis

The death of Mrs. Leis, widow of the late Joseph Leis, occurred at the home of her son-in-law, Mr. Chr. J. Lichty, just east of Crosshill, on Thursday last, aged 76 years and four months. Deceased was one of the very earliest of residents of this section, coming here with her father, Mr. Kennel, who settled on the eastern border of Wellesley when she was a mere child. Since that time she has always lived here, and throughout her long and useful life she retained the highest respect of all. Besides a large number of descendants and relatives, Mrs. Leis leaves a family of thirteen children: Noah, John, Magdelene (Mrs. P. Jantzi), Chris., Jos., David, Daniel, Catherine (Mrs. C. J. Lichty), Menno, Barbara (Mrs. C. Gingerich), Jacob, Phronica (Mrs. N. Roth), and Solomon. These children are all living and settled in this neighborhood, and all of them attended the large funeral which occurred on Sunday last at the Mennonite Church, 3rd line.

Schultz. - Mary Schultz (born Kennel) died Dec. 20, 1906, at her home in Wellesley Twp., Waterloo Co., Ont.; aged 67 Y., 3 M., 23 D. She was twice married, first to John E. Lichty, with whom she lived in matrimony twelve years. To this union were born five children. After his death she was married to George Schultz, with whom she lived in matrimony nearly thirty-three years. To this union were born three children. She leaves, to mourn her death, a sorrowing husband and six children, two having gone before her. Sister Schultz was a consistent member of the Amish church since her youth and may well have been called a mother in Israel. She was buried Dec. 22, in the graveyard adjoining the Wellesley meeting-house; funeral services by Peter Spenler at the house, and Christian Zehr, Sr., and Nicholas Nafziger at the meeting-house.

Wellesley

The sad news was circulated on Saturday morning of the death of Mr. Joseph Kennel Sr., who was suffering from gangrene for about on and a half years, and on Saturday morning was relieved of his suffering. The remains were taken to the Amish Mennonite cemetery for interment Monday morning. The funeral was largely attended. A sorrowing widow and a sister survive. Deceased was a life long citizen of this community and will be greatly missed. He was 71 years and two months old. The bereaved have the sympathy of the surrounding country in this their sad affliction.

STREICHER. - John, son of Leonhard and Barbara Streicher, was born in Wellesley Twp., Waterloo Co., Ont., on Dec. 2, 1852. In his youth he accepted Christ as his Saviour and was a lifelong member of the Amish Mennonite Church. On June 13, 1875, he was married to Magdalena Bender of Wilmot. To this union were born 2 children, 1 son and one daughter, Barbara, who predeceased him in her early childhood. They lived in matrimony 14 years. His wife died on April 5, 1889. On Jan. 5, 1890 he was married to Leah Lebold of Wilmot. To this union 3 sons were born, of whom 1 died in infancy. They lived in matrimony 27 years until the death of his wife on Aug. 14, 1917. Since then he has lived as a widower for more than 23 years. He passed away at his home in South Easthope, Perth Co., on Sunday, Nov. 10, 1940 at the ripe old age of 87 y. 11 m. 9 d. He leaves to mourn his demise, 3 sons, Solomon and Ezra of South Easthope, David of East Zorra, 3 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren. The funeral was conducted at the Amish Mennonite Church near Poole, Ont.

Mrs. Christian Lichty

Mrs. Christian J. Lichty, a lifelong and well known resident of Wellesley village passed away last Thursday, March 24th, after an illness of nine months, at the age of 74 years. She was a valued and faithful adherent of the Amish-Mennonite Church. Besides her husband she leaves two daughters, Mrs. Joseph Wagler and Miss Fanny Licty. Also five brothers, Joseph, Daniel, Jacob, Solomon and Menno Leis, all of Wellesley, and one sister, Mrs. Nicholas S. Roth, of New Hamburg.

The funeral was held on Monday forenoon from her late home to Amish-Mennonite Church and Cemetery on the Third Line of Wellesley Township.

WELLESLEY.-A native of Wellesley township, Menno Leis, 83, township Menno Leis died here Tuesday night at the home of his son-in-law, Solomon Gerber. He had been ill three weeks. He attended Maple View Mennonite Church, Third Line of Wellesley. His wife predeceased him some years ago.

Surviving is one son, Milton, of Kitchener, one daughter, Mrs. Solomon Gerber, Wellesley, and a brother, Solomon, of Baden. He was predeceased by one son, three daughters, eight brothers and four sisters.

Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon, with Rev. Samuel Schultz officiating.

WELLESLEY.\emdash Ill for the past three years, Daniel K. Leis, 76, died at his home here Thursday. Deceased was born in Wellesley township in 1803. He was a member of the third line Maple View Amish Mennonite church. Surviving are his wife, four sons, Christian of Tavistock, Samuel and Peter of Kingwood, Ezra of Wellesley, one daughter, Mrs. Aaron Jantzi of Wellesley, three brothers, Menno of Wilmot, Jacob of Wellesley and Solomon of Baden, 19 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. CROSSHILL, May 20. Christian A. Kennel, passed away last evening at his home, one mile south of Crosshill, after an illness of one month, at the age of 71. He was married to Barbara Schragg 50 years ago, the two celebrating their anniversary last September.

Surviving, are his widow, one son, Dan of Victoriaburg, six daughters, Mrs. Sam Lehman, Castor Land, N. Y., Mrs. John Jutzi, Victoriaburg. Mrs. Emanuel Steinman, New Hamburg, Mrs. Sam Erb, Crosshill, Mrs. Irvin Ropt, Detroit, and Mattie at home, one brother, Joseph Kennel, Wellesley, three sisters, Mrs. John Lehman, Groghon, N. Y., Mrs. Peter Yousei, Croghon, N. Y., Mrs. John Bast, Windsor, and 22 grandchildren.
The funeral will be held from his late residence on Sunday to Maple View Amish church, with burial in the adjoining cemetery.

Mrs. Magdalene Kennel Lehman, 68, widow of John Lehman and a resident of this village for the past 35 years died at her home on Main street at 5: 30 Monday morning following a week's illness. She suffered a stroke a week ago. She was born in Wellesley, Ont. Canada, on August 2, 1871, a daughter of Christiana A. and Magdalene Albright Kennel Her early life was spent in Canada and 50 years ago she was married to John Lehman in Welesley. The couple came to this country in 1905, settling in Lewis County. In 1906 Mr. Lehman purchased the sawmill business of Joseph F. Farney which he operated until his death in July, 1925. The business is now operated by his son-in-law, Benjamin F Zehr. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Benjamin F. (Sussana) Zehr, three grandchildren, the Misses Kathlene L. and Charlotte Zehr, and Mark J. Zehr all of this village; two sisters, Mrs. Susan Yousey, who has resided with Mrs. Lehman for the past five years, and Mrs. Barbara Bast, Wellesley, Ont Prayer services were held at the family home Thursday at noon (E. S.T.) and from the Amish Mennonite church at 1 p. m. Burial will be made in the church cemetery in this village.

Her sudden death, which came with but little warning perhaps will exaggerate the loneliness which her husband will experience, but as Christians we can always be comforted with the presence of the Lord. In Christ we have the promise and the hope of being at home in joy and peace. Funeral services were held at the home by Pre. Frank Raber and at the Pigeon River Church by Bros. Edwin Albrecht and Emanuel Swartzendruber. Interment in the adjoining cemetery.

Mrs. Christian Baechler

The grim reaper of death has taken another of our highly esteemed residents of this district when Mrs. Christian Baechler was called to her eternal rest on Tuesday of this week at the age of 64 years, 10 months and 21 days. The late Mrs. Baechler had not been in good health for several months, but a bad cold developed a few weeks ago and finally a paralytic stroke was the cause of her demise. The deceased was a resident of South Easthope for the past thirty-three years and she endeared herself through her Christian qualities in life to a wide circle of friends. She was an ardent and devout adherent of the Amish-Mennonite faith. The late Mrs. Baechler was a daughter of the late Christian Schrag and was born in Wilmot Township where she spent her youth. After her marriage to her now bereaved husband she lived for a few years on a farm on the 15th line of East Zorra and for the past 33 years resided on the farm in South Easthope, where she passed away. There are left to mourn her passing her sorrowing husband, one son and four daughters, besides 16 grandchildren. The children are Christian on the homestead, (Katie) Mrs. Peter Schultz, of Topping, (Veronica), Mrs. Sam Bender and (Susanna) Mrs. Peter Both, New Hamburg, and (Sarah) Mrs. Michael Jutzi, East Zorra. She is also survived by two brothers, Christian Schrag, of Zurich, Daniel Schrag of Leonardville, N. Y., and one sister, Mrs. Peter Both, of Wilmot. The funeral will take place this forenoon from her late home to the 16th line A.-M. church in East Zorra, followed by interment in the 19th line cemetery.

July 16, 1882, she was united in marriage to Christian Baechler, sharing with him the burdens and joys of life for more than 47 years. They were blest with 11 children, 6 of whom predeceased their mother in their infancy. She leaves her bereaved husband, 1 son, 4 daughters, 16 grandchildren, 1 sister, and 2 brothers. The above named individual is the proprietor of the cheese factory, which is situated about a mile northwest of the village. Mr. Streicher lives in a fine house and owns and works a farm of one hundred acres. He took possession of the factory last fall and since it came into his control its patrons and output have been almost doubled, there being something like seventy farmers who contribute milk. The factory is located on one corner of the farm of Mr. Christian Streicher, his father, who owns a block of two hundred acres. It is in charge of a cheese maker of practical experience and who takes a deep interest in his work. That individual is Mr. W. Vance, who has served five years in cheese making. For two years of this time he was engaged in Erie County, near York, noted as being one of the great cheese making centres of America. He is a native of Oxford County and worked several years at cheese making in Norwich township of that county. This is his first season here and he is giving entire satisfaction. They are now turning out about twelve _____ cheese per day. The cheese made here is of a very superior grade and commands as high a price as any offered on the market. The lot of some 250 now on hand in the storage room can be classed as gilt edged being fully equal to any I have yet seen, regarding color and flavor. The water for the factory is of the very best coming from a spring that flows out of a hill about three yards to the west. One feature that should impress the visitor with the belief that a good article is being turned out here is the remarkable cleanliness of the interior of the factory, and without this precaution I do not believe an article can be produced that will command the top market price. Mr. Streicher believes that to make a success of the cheese making business it must have strict attention the same as any other calling.

Mrs. Catherine Lebold, 82, died Thursday evening, December 10^th, at her home in Wellesley. She was a daughter of the late Christian Streicher and Robena Roth. Her husband, Bishop Daniel Lebold, died in 1941. She was born in Wellesley, September 11^th, 1877, and was a member of Mapleview Amish Mennonite Church, Wellesley. She is survived by two sons, Samuel, R.R. 1, Milverton, and Allan of New Dundee; and six daughters, Mrs. David (Nancy) Erb, Wellesley ; Miss Emma, Kitchener; Mrs. Elmer (Beama) Steinman, Wellesley; Mrs. Christian (Catherine) Albrecht, New Dundee; Mrs. Norman (Edna) Zehr, Topping; Mrs. Irvin (Erma) Erb, 5^th line Wellesley; 33 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Three sons predeceased her. Clarence, Emery and William, also one granddaughter, Betty Lebold. The remains rested at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Steinman, Wellesley, where a short service was held Sunday at 1:30 p.m. followed by a memorial service at the Mapleview Amish Mennonite Church at 2:00 p.m. Burial was made in the adjoining cemetery. Bishop Christian Streicher officiated. The pallbearers were: Howard Lebold, Dan Albrecht, Ray Steinman, Harold Steinman, Paul Erb, and Lloyd Zehr. Zehr.-Katherine (Bender) Zehr was born April 6, 1887, in Wellesley, Ont., passed into her reward after a lingering illness for over a year at her late home in Tavistock, on April 17, 1944; aged 57 y. 11 d. In early youth she accepted Christ as her personal Saviour, and by water baptism upon confession of faith, was received into fellowship of East Zorra congregation by the late Bishop Jacob M. Bender of Tavistock, Ont. On Oct. 29, 1907 she was joined in holy wedlock to Simon B. Zehr of East Zorra. This union was blessed with 10 children. One daughter passed away in infancy. She leaves to mourn her departure her loving companion, 4 sons (Irvin, Tavistock; Henry, Inerkip; Howard, overseas in England; Ernest, at home), 5 daughters (Edna, Mrs. Henry Christiansen, Plattsville; Clara, Mrs. Norman Lebold, Baden; Lydian, Mrs. Walter Shantz, Baden; Helen, at home; Hilda, Mrs. Earl Kimberger, Stratford), one adopted daughter (Alice, Mrs. Earl Turton, Toronto), one stepsister (Emma Schwartzentruber, East Zorra), besides 15 grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Services were held at Krugs Funeral Parlor by Bro. Joe R. Bender and at East Zorra A. M. Church by Brethren Peter Nafziger and Dan S. Iutzi. Interment was made in adjoining cemetery.

MRS. JOHN WAGLER

Mrs. John Z. Wagler died at her home Thursday, May 4^th, in Wellesley, after an illness of about five days. She was born in North Easthope, April 29, 1880, a daughter of the late Andrew Streicher and Magdalena Roth. She was a member of Maple View Amish Mennonite Church. On November 4, 1900, she was married to Mr. Wagler in Wellesley. She is survived by her husband; one son, Rudy, of Kitchener; and one daughter, Miss Magdalena, at home. One son died in 1924. One grandchild also survives. The body rested at the Futher funeral home, Wellesley, until Saturday at 5:00 p.m. when removal was made to her home, where a short service was held Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m., followed by a memorial service at the Maple View Church.

WELLESLEY, March 1 - Mrs. Noah Leis, 60, passed away at their home, on the 3rd Line, Wellesley, at 10: 30 last night following an illness of four months. She was born at North Easthope Dec. 6, 1883, a daughter of the late Andrew K. Streicher and Magdalena Roth, and was married at Wellesley Nov. 20, 1904. Mrs. Leis attended the Maple View Amish Mennonite Church on the 3rd Line, Wellesley.

In addition to her husband, two sons, Emmanuel, of the 5th Line, Mornington, and Clayton of Milverton; and three daughters, Mrs. John McMillan of North Easthope and Clara and Lavina, at home, survive. There are also 11 grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. John Wagler, of Wellesley, surviving.

The funeral will be held Friday at 1: 30 pm from the home, followed by service at the Maple View Amish Mennonite Church at 2: 30 pm. Burial will take place in the adjoining cemetery. Rev. Samuel Schultz will officiate. The remains are resting at home.

He was a member of Tavistock Mennonite Church. He had farmed in East Zorra Township and was later employed at Zimmerman Brothers in Tavistock. Surviving is one brother, Ezra, of Tavistock. Death followed an eight-week illness resulting from a stroke. In his youth he united with the Amish Mennonite Church at Wellesley, Ont. In 1903 he was married to Mary Albrecht, after which he left the farm and engaged in carpenter work. In 1931 he moved with his family to Kitchener. The following year he united with the First Mennonite Church. Surviving are his wife and 8 daughters (Clara-Mrs. Enos Steinman, Baden, Ont.; Kate-Mrs. Aaron Zehr, Wellesley, Ont.; Marion-Mrs. Arthur Freund, Kitchener, Ont.; Alma-Mrs. William Paddon, Gulph, Ont.; Alice-Mrs. John Henry, Florence-Mrs. Walter Schrock, Verna-Mrs. John Wynosky, and Wilma-Mrs. Clifford Schiedel, all of Kitchener, Ont.), 27 grandchildren, 3 brothers (Simon, Gadshill, Ont.; David and Amos, Wellesley, Ont.) and 2 sisters (Mrs. Sarah Wahl, Kitchener, Ont.; and Mrs. Daniel Gerber, Crosshill, Ont.). Two young children (Clarence and Edna) preceded him in death. He remained in fellowship with the First Mennonite Church, having expressed peace with God during his last illness and giving evidence of being ready to meet his Creator and Redeemer. Funeral services were held April 11 at the First Mennonite Church, with burial in the adjoining cemetery, in charge of Oscar Burkholder assisted by Merle Shantz.

Interment will follow in First Mennonite cemetery, Kitchener.

WELLESLEY. July 23 - Rudolph Leis, 39, died last night at his home in Wellesley after an illness of three weeks. Born in 1878 in Wellesley Townshiph, he was a retired farmer. His parents were the late Joseph Leis and Catherine Roth of Wellesley. His wife, the former Elizabeth Bast, predeceased him in 1942. He was a member of the Maple View Mennonite Church, 3rd line, Wellesley. Surviving ars his stepmother, Mrs. Magdeline Leis, Wellesley; three sons, William, Kitchener and Joseph and Waldemar, Wellesley; two daughters, Mrs. Elmer (Leah) Shultz, North Easthope and Mrs. Elmer (Edna)Brenneman, Wellesley; five brothers, John, New Hamburg, Soloman and Joseph R., Wellesley, Sidney Linwood and Elmer, London; five sisters, Mrs. Joseph Kropf, Misses Fannie, Mattie and Lydia, and Mrs. William Jantzi, all of Wellesley; 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. WELLESLEY Mrs. Solomon Gerber, 69, the former Laura Leis, died yesterday at her home in Wellesley, after a long illness.

Born Oct 9, 1886. she was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Menno Leis. She was a member of Cedar Grove Amish Mennonite Church
Her husband survives along with five sons, Elmer and Moses. both of Wilmot Township: Amos, Soloman and Ohmer, all of Wellesley Township: and five daughters. Mrs. Nickolas (Emma) Schmidt of Millbank. Mrs. David (Esther) Schwartz of Crosshill. Mrs. Elras Laura Jantz), Mrs. Ralph. (Sarah) Leis and Mrs. Al- vin (Elmina) Jantzi, all of Wellesley Township. There are 41 grandchildren and one great- grandchild. One son and one daughter predeceased her.

The body is at home where the funeral will be conducted Thursday at 1:30 p.m.. followed by memorial service in Cedar Grove Amish Mennonite Church at 2 p.m. Burial will be in the adjoin ing cemetery. Bishop Samuel Roth will officiate..

Died in Hospital After Near Drowning When Car Goes Into Shallow Water

Milton Lies, 52, of Kitchener, died unexpectedly in K-W Hospital on Sunday evening after being saved from drowning earlier in the afternoon. He was driving into Kitchener from the south-west when his car struck the Mill St. bridge near the city limits and plummeted into the creek. Mr. Leis was pinned underneath in about 1 feet of water. Golfers from the Rockway golf course saw the accident and rushed to his assistance. They pulled him from his perilous position and he seemed to be only slightly injured. The deceased was a former resident of New Hamburg, and was employed in the Hahn Brass Co. factory. He was a son-in-law of Mrs. Catharine Litwiller of this town. Surviving are his wife, three sons, Milton, Wallace and Robert, all of Kitchener; four daughters, Mrs. Carl (Mildred) Kaminska of Centreville; Mrs. William (Katharine) Musclow of Galt; Mrs. Munro (Marie) Kerr and Mrs. Matthew (Laura) Riem, both of Kitchener; a sister, Mrs. Solomon Gerber, Wellesley, and nine grandchildren. A son, Wilfred, was killed in action in France in the Second World War. A sister, Nancy, and a brother, Mose, also predeceased him. A private funeral service was held Wednesday afternoon at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home with Rev. Dr. H. A. Kellerman, pastor of Calvary Memorial Church, officiating. Burial was in Woodland Cemetery, Kitchener.

Of 4 William Street North. Wellesley, passed away Sunday, Nov. 7 at St. Mary's Hospital, Kitchener.

She was the former Annie Nancy Gingerich, born in Wellesley, 78 years ago, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Christian Gingerich, a member of the Maple View Mennonite Church.

Dear mother of Walter of Wellesley; survived by four grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Jonathan, July 29, 1972; also by three brothers and two sisters.

Friends called at the Futher Bros. Funeral Home, Wellesley. At noon Wednesday, November 10, the remains were removed to the Maple View Mennonite Church for the service at 2:30. Rev. Alvin Leis and Rev. Jacob Roese officiated. Interment in the church cemetery.

Elizabeth Gingerich

Miss Elizabeth Gingerich of 86 Queen St., Wellesley, died last Saturday at the Kitchener-Waterloo Hospital. She was 63.

Born in Wellesley, Nov. 9, 1905, Miss Gingerich was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Christian R. Gingerich.

She was a member of the Maple View Mennonite Church at Wellesley and was a life-long resident there.

Surviving are one brother, Joseph Gingerich of Kitchener and one sister, Mrs. Jonathan (Nancy) Kantzi of Wellesley.

Two brothers and a sister predeceased her.

Funeral services were held at the Maple View Mennonite Church on Tuesday.

Futher Brothers Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Leis, Samuel E., son of Daniel and Magdalene (Erb) Leis, was born in Wellesley Twp., Ont., Oct. 30, 1891; died at his home near Kingwood, Jan. 23, 1963; aged 71 y. 2 m. 24 d. On Feb. 1, 1917, he was married to Elizabeth Schultz, who survives. Also surviving are one son (Clarence), 4 grandchildren, 3 brothers and one sister (Christian, Peter, Ezra and Sarah-Mrs. Aaron W. Jantzi). On June 5, 1938, he was ordained as minister at Maple View A.M. Church, and served at Maple View and also at Crosshill. He also served on the Winter Bible School Board of the Ontario A.M. Conference, 1941-54, and took an active part in the teaching program of the summer Bible school. He served as a member of the executive com-mittee and was treasurer of the Ontario A.M. Conference for many years. Funeral services were held at the Maple View Church, Jan. 26, in charge of Christ Streicher, Elmer Swartzentruber, and Alvin Leis.
