HARRIS LEGG 1911-1996

Born in Waterbury, Connecticut on March 18, 1911 but raised in Galt, Harris Legg has been described as one of the city's greatest athletes. Mr. Legg was the son of George Legg and Maude Harris and came to Galt with his parents when he was just four years old. Mr. Legg won his first skating race when he was twelve and helped to organize the Galt Speed Skating Club in 1933 with forty-four members. A Canadian champion speed skater, Mr. Legg qualified for the 1936 Olympic Games but was unable to compete at the Games because there was no money to send the Canadian skaters overseas. He then turned his attention to putting on skating and barrel jumping exhibitions throughout Southern Ontario and northern New York. Following one of the exhibitions staged in Lake Placid, New York he was asked to join the Shipstad and Johnson Ice Follies. Because ice shows were new and because he had his own shows lined up, he hesitated but finally joined the Ice Follies in March 1937. He was to remain with the show for seventeen years and became one of the Ice Follies most popular performers. Mr. Legg died in Florida in February 1996.
