Rev. Solomon Gehman, "was born July 21st, 1841. On May 3rd, 1864, he was married to Angeline Shantz who was born April 10th, 1846. After their marriage they moved on his father's old homestead where he is still residing. On November 26th, 1882, he was ordained unto the ministry of the Mennonite denomination by Bishop Amos Cressman. His field of labor is Detweilers and Blenheim. Of the many young men who were ordained unto the ministry of the Mennonite Church since 1870 none have surpassed him as an orator. As a preacher he is highly interesting and acceptable. His sermons are always distinguished for appropriate and well-digested thought, far from being dry and merely a repetition of meaningless gestures and phrases, but, on the other hand, they are well seasoned with gospel truth accompanied by the Holy Ghost. He has done much to raise the standard of the church of his choice. Parties of all denominations love to be instructed spiritually by his soul-cheering sermons. He seems to be a favorite, not only among his own members but also of those of other sects and nationalities. To him and his wife is born the following family"

Gehman. - Pre. Solomon B. Gehman was born July 21, 1841; died at his home near Waterloo, Ont., Nov. 19, 1912; aged 71 y. 3 m. 28 d. About 30 years ago he was ordained to the ministry in the Mennonite Church, in which calling we believe he was faithful in performing his duties. He was in good health, until about 3 months ago, when he was stricken down with a complication of diseases causing his death. He was a powerful speaker, full of Spirit and life, and no sacrifice was too great by day nor night, in going out, especially in bringing the lost to Christ. The writer is especially impressed in remembering the time (about 27 years ago) when Bro. Gehman and different others came into our midst holding the first evening meetings, as we then called them, when quite a number of us became willing to accept Christ as our Savior. In this Bro. Gehman was an instrument and we believe there will be stars in his crown. Funeral was held on Nov. 21st. Services at the house by Noah Hunsberger and at the Waterloo Church by Jonas Snider in German, and Noah Stauffer in English, from II Tim. 6: 8. Buried at the David Eby cemetery. He is survived by the widow, 3 sons and 2 daughters; one son, John Allen preceded him.

Roseville Mennonite Church (Detweiler Meeting House)

Services began in homes in the area with the arrival of the first settlers around 1822. A first meeting house was built about 1830 approximately a half-mile west of Roseville, on the south side of the road. One acre of land on the northeast corner of Lot 37, Concession 11, North Dumfries Township, was transferred from Samuel C. Snyder. The deed for the property was dated 1830, but it was not registered until August 1842. A stone meeting house was built in 1855 just slightly east of the old log meeting house; the church was dedicated on November 25, 1855 by the congregation's first minister, Jacob F. Detweiler. Henry Shantz, Enoch Detweiler and Solomon Gehman were the ministers who followed Jacob F. Detweiler.

Sunday School began in 1924 and in 1933 Young People's Bible Meetings were organized. The latter meetings were held in conjunction with those of the Blenheim Mennonite Church. A Sunday School classroom was added to the Detweiler church in 1956.

Moses Bowman, a layman from First Mennonite Church in Kitchener, was ordained minister to Detweiler Mennonite Church in 1938 where he continued to serve until the time of his death in 1964. The small congregation was served by visiting ministers until it disbanded in January 1966. Some of the remaining families are reported to have joined with Blenheim Mennonite Church at that time.

S. Gabel.

For a long time prior to six months ago when the above named gentleman moved to the village, the people of Hawksville went without their daily supply of good fresh meat. Mr. Gabel was born in Plattsville, Oxford county, and has been engaged in the butchering business for about six years. He was married in 1878 to Miss Lizzie, daughter of John Heimbecker, formerly of Listowel. They have three children. He located his shop here about six months ago, and has already acquired quite a fine patronage. He kills none but the best beef animals and is therefore always prepared to furnish his customers with first class fresh meat He daily delivers meat in a wide section of territory. His refrigerator is always. well supplied with ice, and his patrons need not fear getting tainted meat during the hot days of summer.

Mrs. Magdalena Knarr

NEW DUNDEE: Two weeks from the day that she fell down the cellar steps at her home in this village and suffered a fractured hip. Mrs. Magdalena Knarr widow of the late Martin Knarr, passed away at St. Mary's Hospital, Kitchener, Friday, Jan. 5, in her 8lst year. A life-long resident of this district the deceased was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Cassel and was born on Aug. 1, 1859. Following her marriage to Martin Knarr they farmed in Blenheim township for many years and retired to the village 24 years ago where her husband died in 192S. Surviving are: one son, Ephriam of New Dundee; one brother, Henry Cassel of Goshen, Ind., four grandchildren and six great grandchildren. The late Mrs. Knarr was a member of the Detweiler Mennonite Church at Roseville at which place the funeral was held on Tuesday afternoon following a service at the family residence at 2 o'clock. Interment was made in the adjoining cemetery.

Gehman, William S., son of Solomon B. and Angeline (Shantz) Gehman, was born in Waterloo Co., Ont., July 1, 1880; died at the Elkhart (Ind.) General Hospital, May 22, 1962; aged 81 y. 10 m. 21 d. He was married to Ella Kulp, who died in 1937. On March 18, 1940, he was married to Dora Shantz, who survives. Also surviving is one brother (S. S. Gehman, Preston, Ont.). He was a member of the Prairie Street Church, where funeral services were held May 24, in charge of Howard J. Zehr and John E. Gingrich.

For the past 25 years she has resided at Doon. Her husband predeceased her a year ago. Surviving are six daughters, Mrs. O. Goddard and Mrs. W. H. Teet, Doon, Mrs. A. Taylor, Galt; Mrs. W. Atkinson, Preston; Mrs. Garinger, Brooksby, Sask., and Mrs. F. Buttler, Chicago; one son, William Gehman, New Hamburg; two sisters, Mrs. G. Hussey Sr., Dickie Settlement and Mrs. J. He was a member of Knox Presbyterian Church. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Mary Ann Gingrich, in 1959. Surviving is one son, Floyd of RR 6, Guelph; four daughters, Mrs. Walter (Adelaide) McDonald, Mrs. Joseph (Carrie) Gallagher and Myrtle all of Preston and Mrs. Lorne (Stella) Marshall, RR 1, Blair. Ephraim Knarr, 80, of New Dundee, died in Coutts Pavilion at Freeport Sanatorium Nov. 27, after a brief illness.

Born in Maryborough Township, April 5, 1881, he has resided in the New Dundee area for many years. After his retirement from farming he owned and operated a sales and service deport for farm implements.

He was the son of the later Mr. and Mrs. Martin Knarr. His wife the former Ida Quehl, predeceased him in 1955.

He is survived by three sons, Irvin of New Dundee, John of Tavistock, Elmer of Kitchener, one daughter, Mrs. Delton (Luella) Frey Kitchener, and 15 grandchildren.

The body is at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home, Kitchener, where the funeral will be conducted on Thursday at 2 pm, by Rev. H. F. Schade. Interment will be in Union Cemetery, Roseville.

Mrs. Wilfred L. Wanner of 410 Stirling Ave., S., Kitchener, died Saturday at her home. She was 77.

The former Lauretta Fried, she was born in Blenheim Township near Roseville and was a daughter of the late Mr and Mrs. Allan Fried.

She had been a resident of Kitchener for the past six years and formerly lived in the New Dundee area for many years.

She was a member of Grace United Church, Roseville, and the United Church Women.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Gilbert Becker, in 1919 and her second husband, Wilfred Wanner, in 1953 and by one brother and one sister.

Surviving are two sons, R. Willard (Bill) Becker and Ward G. Becker, both of New Dundee; and seven daughters, Mrs. Oliver (Margaret) Bean of New Dundee, Mrs. Peter (Myrtle) Vanderscoot of New Hamburg, Mrs. Wayne (Susie) Shantz of St. Agatha, Cleo Wanner of Kitchener, Mrs. Elgin (Ivy) Musselman of Waterloo, Mrs. John (Reta) Hofstetter of Plattsville, Mrs. Melvin (Dorothy) Shantz of Petersburg; three brothers, Ephraim of Kitchener, Ralph and Clayton, both of Roseville; two sisters, Mrs. Edgar (Cleo) Latsch of Roseville, Mrs. Harry (Ethel) Brodhaecker of Galt; 30 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

The body will be at the Ratz- Bechtel Funeral Home after 3 p.m. Sunday until 11 a.m. Tuesday when removal was made to Grace United Church, Roseville, where Rev. A. M. Schlenker conducted the service at 2:30 p.m.

Burial was in the Roseville cemetery.

Peacefully, in his sleep, Tuesday, Oct. 22, 1991, in his 99th year. Lloyd F. Gehman - by Record Staff Writer - GALT - Lloyd Findlay Gehman, 62, of 51 Lansdowne Rd. S. died today at South Waterloo Hospital. He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Amos Gehman of North Dumfries Township and lived in Dickie Settlement before moving to Galt 40 years ago. For the past 15 years he was employed by Sheldons Engineering Ltd., and previously by the Valleyview Creamery. Mr Gehman was on the board of managers of First Baptist Church, Galt. Surviving are his wife, the former Ida Daniels; two daughters, Mrs. Robert H. (Norma) Allison and Mrs. Audrey Reid of Galt; three brothers, Elton of Blair, Stanley of Ayr and Nelson of Preston; one sister, Mrs. Alberta Schoenfeld of Preston and five grandchildren;. One son, Harvey, predeceased him. The body is at the Coutts and Son Funeral Home, 96 St. Andrew St., where service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday by Rev. Charles Tarry. Burial will be in Mount View Cemetery.

A lifelong resident of North Dumfries, George Vardon Hussey of RR I. Ayr, passed away at Cambridge Memorial Hospital on Tuesday, June 30th. He was in his 81st year. Mr. Hussey. who resided east of Roseville. retired on the farm where he had lived for 75 year, He and his wife. the former Ina Marshall. had observed their 57th wedding anniversary in April of this year. He was a member of Grace United Church. Roseville. Surviving besides his wife are a son Vardon of Cambridge, a daughter Mrs. Doris Cress of RR I. Ayr, sisters Mrs Minnie Scott of Cambridge and Mrs. Mary Bell Willetts of RR 2. Cambridge: four grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Funeral service was held Thursday at the Barthel Stager Funeral Home. Preston. Pastor David Max well officiated. Interment in Roseville Cemetery.
