Samuel Shantz, "was born January 16th, 1811. On March 28th, 1830, he was married to Susannah Erb who was born November 13th, 1810, and died October 7th, 1844. On March 25th 1845, he was again married to Rebecca Rudy who was born October 29th, 1825. Although deprived of first class school privileges and his time devoted to constant labor on his father's farm, his desire for information made him seek opportunities for acquiring knowledge. This, added to his natural abilities, gave Mr. Shantz great success in acquiring information on all topics. His stock of knowledge and experience made him a wise counsellor and a judicious adviser; and on may occasions, both in public and private interests, his counsel was sought and obtained. After his first marriage he took charge of his own farm, about three miles west of Berlin, and commenced clearing away the huge forest and erected the necessary buildings thereon. In due time he was the possessor of one of the finest farms on the Petersburg Road. Here he resided until his death which took place January 18th, 1895. His family consisted of twenty-two children, ten of whom were born unto his first wife"

Berlin Loses an Old Resident

The news of Saturday says: - "We have to notice today the death of another of our eldest citizens, Mrs. Abraham Moyer, Sen. She was the eldest daughter of the late Isaac Shantz one of the earliest settlers of this neighborhood, and has lived in wedded life with her husband, who survives her, nearly sixty years. They have had a large family of sons and daughters, most of whom are living. Deceased has been suffering for a number of years from paralysis, which finally took her off. She was a pious and devoted Christian woman, who will always be held in the kindest remembrance and respect by her children, grandchildren, and almost an unlimited number of friends and acquaintances.

Nancy Weber, maiden name Shantz, daughter of Isaac Shantz, who came from Pennsylvania in 1808 and settled on the farm near Berlin, now in possession of Abram Wambold, was born Aug. 11th, 1817. On the 1st of March, 1836, she was married to Benjamin M. Weber, and moved on lot No. 113, between Bridgeport and Breslau, which was at that time all forest but a few acres. They were of the first settlers, and wolves and other wild beasts and Indians were plentiful. Some years afterward other Mennonite people came in, and they built a house of worship now known as Cressman's Meeting House. Here they lived and worshiped the Lord harmoniously in true unity and spirit together until Nov. 30, 1870, Benjamin Weber died. Since then she remained a widow until her life ended here to begin in glory, which took place April 8th, 1899, at the age of 81 years, 7 months and 27 days. This union was blessed with ten children, of whom only two remain. She was buried at C. Eby's M. H. on the 11th, where a large concourse of friends and relatives were present. Services by Noah Stauffer from Heb. 11: 10, followed by Jacob Woolner. She was a consistent member of the Mennonite Church.

CRESSMAN - On the 7th of September, 1893, at Breslau, Ontario, sister Veronica, widow of the late Bro. Joseph Cressman, aged 73 y., 10 m., 11 d. She died with a living hope. Buried on the 10th at Breslau, followed to the grave by many relatives and friends. She leaves a number of children and grandchildren to mourn their loss. Funeral services were held by Jacob Woolner in German, and by Amos Eby in English.

ESHLEMAN. - On the 16th of September, in Waterloo county, Ont., Sister Esther, wife of David Eshleman, and daughter of Isaac and Esther Shantz, aged 60 years, 8 months and 9 days. Her affliction was palsy, of which she suffered three days, when, as we believe, she went asleep in Jesus. Buried at Latshaw's graveyard. Services were held a the house by Amos Cressman and at the meeting-house by Moses Bowman and Joseph Nahrgang.

Shantz, Israel R. (1863-1910)

Israel R. Shantz Israel R. Shantz: minister and bishop of the West Zion Mennonite Church near Carstairs, Alberta, was born 15 August 1863 and died 15 December 1910. He married Elizabeth Schmitt (22 August 1868-31 December 1962) on 26 September 1886. They were the parents of 3 sons and five daughters.

Israel Shantz was converted at revival meetings near Berlin (Kitchener), Ontario in 1891. He served for nine years as superintendent of a new Sunday School near Waterloo, Ontario, before moving with his family to the Carstairs district in 1901. He and his wife participated in the organization of the West Zion Mennonite Church later, on 15 September 1901, he was chosen by lot and ordained as minister of the new congregation. He was ordained as bishop 3 October 1909, and served in that office until his death in 1910, traveling extensively as an evangelist and visiting Mennonites who had settled in scattered small clusters in various districts of Alberta and Saskatchewan. He maintained an exceptionally strong and abiding interest in the work of the Sunday School.

Shortly after his arrival at Carstairs, Israel Shantz suffered a serious leg injury while unloading lumber which had been shipped to the community by rail. The injury never completely healed, causing him considerable discomfort, particularly when travelling. While on a trip to visit settlers arriving in the Tofield district, he suffered a fall which aggravated his leg injury. Infection set in and he returned home a sick man. There were further complications, and he died at his home in Carstairs at the relatively young age of 47. His funeral was reportedly the largest held in that community up to that time, and gave expression to the far-reaching influence he had exerted during the time of his ministry.

Shantz's influence extended far beyond his home community. He was, from the time it was created in 1903, an influential leader in the Alberta Mennonite Conference, which later became the Alberta-Saskatchewan Mennonite Conference and is now the Northwest Mennonite Conference. He offered help and practical spiritual advice to many Mennonite settlers. As a faithful follower of Jesus, he sought to apply the teachings of the Jesus to the opportunities and problems of everyday life. The impact of his life was remembered with affection by members of the congregation at the 2001 centennial celebrations.

Shantz. - Israel R. Shantz died at his home near Carstairs, Alberta, on Dec. 15, 1910; aged 47 y. 5 m. He was born near Berlin, Ont., Aug. 15, 1863. On Sept. 22, 1886, he was married to Elizabeth Schmitt. To this union were born 3 sons and 5 daughters. During the eventful meetings of 1891, held in Berlin, he was converted and at once became active in the Master's service. A new Sunday school was started near Waterloo, Ont., of which he was superintendent for 9 years in succession. In the year 1901, he moved with his family to his late home, and was one of the pioneer settlers in the Waterloo district. His active Christian service did not cease when he moved west. In the same year, Sept. 15, he was ordained a minister of the Gospel in the Mennonite Church, by Bish. S. F. Coffman. On Oct. 3, last year, he was ordained to the office of bishop to have oversight of the churches in Alberta, by Bish. E. S. Hallman. About a month ago, he returned home from looking after a new church colony, a sick man. A complication of diseases set in, and he suffered much, but bore it all patiently. Under this heavy cloud of sorrow we humbly bow to God's will, and say, not ours but Thy will be done. He leaves behind him a loving wife, 3 sons, 5 daughters, 4 brothers and 5 sisters, who mourn their loss, which to him is eternal gain. Sorrow is expressed in the community. The Church is bereft of her pastor. The conference will miss one of her ablest workers. He was buried at West Zion, where the largest funeral held at this place gave expression of how far-reaching his influence was exerted. Services were conducted by N. B. Well Known Berlin Manufacturer Succumbs on Saturday, After Long Illness

Was in His 69 Year

One of Berlin's oldest and highly esteemed citizens, passed away about 6 o'clock on Saturday evening, in the person of Mr. Isaac E. Shantz, the well-known senior member of the firm of I. E. Shantz & Co., at his home on College street. The deceased suffered from congestion of the lungs at the time of his death and had been in poor health during the last ten months. The late I. E. Shantz was born on May 23rd, 1839 and was a son of the late Samuel Shantz, who owned one of the finest farms in the county on the Petersburg-Road, three miles west of Berlin. After securing a common school education and working on his fathers farm, for some years, he entered a mercantile business in Bridgeport and also became interested in several successful manufacturing industries. About fifteen years ago he moved to Berlin and after conducting the store now occupied by Beck & Schell for some years, he purchased the foundry which he has been conducting, for the last ten or twelve years. The deceased was of a quiet and unassuming disposition and while he took a keen interest in municipal affairs of Berlin and was a member of the Town Council, in 1897. He was a devoted Christian man and was highly respected by all with whom he came in contact. He was married to Magdalena Eby in 1860, who survives him and we regret to state, is quite ill. There are five children; Josiah, Berlin, Edmund, Waterloo Tp., Mrs. Amos Groff, Waterloo, Mrs. (Rev,) C. R. Miller, Berlin and Milton B., who will have the sincere sympathy of the entire community. The funeral was held on Wednesday afternoon, at 1: 30 o'clock, to the East End Mennonite church and Cemetery.

Menno E. Shantz

The death took place on Monday evening last at the home of his son, Mr. Wm. Shantz, east of Petersburg, Mr. Menno E. Shantz, a well-known and highly respected retired farmer, in his 80th year. Deceased had been in good health until Thursday last when he suffered a stroke and remained unconscious until his death. He was born on the old Shantz farm a few miles west of Waterloo. In 1864 he was married to Barbara Rudy, who predeceased him twenty years ago. After their marriage they took up their residence on the farm near Petersburg where he continued farming until the death of Mrs. Shantz, when he retired and has since made his home with his son William on the old homestead. There survive three sons and three daughters, namely: Cleason and Nelson of Waterloo, William R., Petersburg; Angeline (Mrs. Sam Snyder), New Dundee; Maria, (Mrs. Weber), Natchez; Clara (Mrs. Ivan Cressman), Wilmot. The funeral took place on Thursday afternoon to the Waterloo Mennonite church and cemetery

Isaac S. Moyer Killed by Railway Team
Was Well Known Resident
The sad news of the death of Isaac S. Moyer reached Kitchener yesterday.

The death took place near Brown City, Mich., Sept. 21st, through being run over by a run-away team, causing hemmorrhage of the brain. He lived only four hours after the accident. The diseased is well known throughout this country and is one of the oldest residents having lived with his daughter, Mrs. Ephraim Schafer, 305 Frederick St., for the last fifteen years.

Last April he went to Michigan to visit his sick daughter, Mrs. Jacob. D. Erb, where he delayed his return on account of sickness. The diseased [sic] was born in this country 1834, aged 82 years 6 month, 14 days. He is survived by 2 daughters and 2 sons, viz., Mrs. J. D. Erb and Ephraim, of Brown City, Mich.; Oliver, of Rochester, N.Y. and Mrs. Ephraim Schafer. of this city. Surviving brothers and sisters are: Moses, of Toronto; Samuel, Abraham and Mrs. Amos Eby, of this citv, and Mrs. Abraham H. Moyer. of Breslau. The remains will be brought to this city Saturday morning and the funeral will be held at the Bethany Church Sunday afternoon. After services, the remains will be taken to Breslau for interment.

MOYER.-Aaron Moyer of near Cressman, Sask., died on May 21, 1907; aged 70 y. 13 d. Two years ago he moved out west with the Waterloo colony, from Ontario. Most of his lifetime was spent as a general merchant in New Dundee and Mildmay. Sad to say, his life was not spent in the service of the Lord. During his sickness he accepted the claims of Christ. Funeral services were held by Pre. Poole at the house and at the church by E. S. Hallman and Pre. Gehrbrandt. Texts, Psalm 39: 4 and I Samuel 20: 3.

Herner.-- Samuel. S. Herner was born near Blair, Ont., and died near Mannheim, Ont., Nov. 30, 1909, at 1: 30 p. m., of heart failure and instant pneumonia while sitting up in the rocking-chair. His death was very unexpected. His mind was strong till the last and he left a bright hope of the future. His age was 66 y. 3 m. 5 d. Funeral services were held at the Latshaw Church, Mannheim, on Dec. 3. Services were held in two places, church and school house. It was a very large funeral. He taught school in Waterloo Co., Ont., for 33 years, and was in the ministry for some years. Funeral services were conducted by Pre. Backus from Philadelphia, and Pre. S. Swartz, Text, II Tim. 2: 4-8, this being the last text of the deceased, he having preached from it two days before his death, in his home church.

Herner. - Benjamin, son of Samuel and Mary Herner, was born in Waterloo Co., .Ont., Nov. 2, 1845; died Mar. 3, 1915; aged 69 y. 4 m. 1 d. He was united in marriage to Lydia Horning of Shambaugh, Ia., Mar. 24, 1891. She preceded him to the spirit world Mar. 3, 1902. On Mar. 4, 1905, he was united in marriage to Sarah Beutler of Wakarusa, Ind. To this union was born 1 son, Edwin. He united with the Mennonite Church in the prime of life and remained true to his faith until death. He was an earnest worker in Sunday school, serving as superintendent for many years. He was a member of the local mission board for the state of Illinois and approved of the aggressive work of the Church along the line of missions. He served the public in the capacity of school teacher in Livingstone Co. for 28 years. His last term was taught in 1899. Since then the greater part of his time was spent on the farm. The deceased met death through an accident caused by a loaded wagon passing over his body sustaining injuries that caused his sudden and unexpected death. He leaves to mourn his loss a heart broken wife, 1 son, Edwin, 2 sisters, Mrs. Veronica Skinner of Cullom, Ill., and Mrs. Esther Finnelson of Basset, Neb., 2 brothers, David of Pendes, Neb., and John of Cullom, Ill. The Church has lost a faithful member, the neighborhood a worthy friend, the family a loving husband and a devoted father, and the cause of truth and right a most faithful advocate. The funeral services were held at the Cullom Mennonite Church on Mar. 6, 1915, conducted by Bro. A. H. Leaman of the Chicago Mission. Interment in Sullivan Center Cemetery

What Berlin was like fifty years go [1855].
Mr. David B. Schneider tells of ye olden days

Very, very few of our citizens can speak with actual knowledge of the condition of things in Berlin 50 and 60 years ago. Nearly all of the pioneers of those bye-gone days have crossed the river on the long journey into the beyond. Among the few that remember incidents of the far past days is Mr. David B. Schneider, of Schneider Avenue, who is 65 years old today. He was born on the old Schneider lot, on which he is now residing, on March 1st, 1840, and has lived in or near Berlin all his lifetime. For quite a number of years he carried on farming just outside the corporation, but he was in the village - later a town, every day.

On June 23, 1807, the late Joseph Schneider - Grandfather Schneider, he is called - settled in the woods where the present Schneider house is. The block comprised 448 acres and lay on the south side of King Street from the present Merchants Bank corner to the postoffice corner. This block, it will be seen, took in the very heart of the town. Just in passing, it may be said that it is the intention to hold a centennial celebration on the Schneider homestead on June 23rd, 1907, to mark the one hundredth anniversary of the arrival here of the pioneer of the family.

The writer enjoyed a most enjoyable chat with Mr. David B. Schneider today. He says he can remember 60 years back. "Then, we had no cement walks or high schools," he said with a smile.

"The only school that we had in the village was a little frame schoolhouse where the town hall now stands. There was only one room and one teacher - a Mr. Adam Ruby was one who taught me."

Mr. John S. Hoffman was one of the boys Mr. Schneider went to school with. There was also a small schoolhouse where the Old Mennonite church stands.

Mr. Schneider says he remembers well when the jail was built. He and other small boys used to watch the men and declared they would take good care and never get inside.

Fifty and fifty-five years ago the land a near the centre of the village, at the corner of Benton and Mary Streets, was in woods, and he helped to plow land where the German Baptist church now stands.

Among the churches here in the early days were the English and German Methodist; the Catholic, St. Paul's Lutheran and the New Jerusalem, the latter on the corner of Benton and Church, later used as a High School.

There was a saw mill up on Schneider's creek, where Mr. Jacob Shoemaker's house now stands, and the creek afforded a fine water power. It also abounded in good fish.

Mr. Schneider remembers two furniture factories - one at the East End, and the other, owned by Mr. J. S. Hoffman, on the present Merchants Bank site.

David B. Schneider, the oldest native born resident of Kitchener, passed away Wednesday afternoon at Pontiac, Michigan according to word received by relatives here. He was in his 89th year.

The late Mr. Schneider had been staying with his son Albert of this city during the summer and a week ago left for Pontiac, Mich., where he had intended spending the winter with his son Oliver. On the way, he contracted a chill which developed into pneumonia.

Surviving are three sons, Rev. O.B. Snyder, Pontiac, Mich., Albert and Joseph of Kitchener and two daughters, Mrs. David Thaler of this city and Mrs. J. C. Meyer of New York. There are also surviving 19 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. The remains were brought to Kitchener this afternoon and the funeral will be held Sunday afternoon at two o'clock from the home of his son Albert M. Snyder, 88 Schneider avenue. Services will be held in Bethany Mennonite church after which internment will be made in East End cemetery. Friends will please omit flowers.

In 1938 two of the older citizens (August R. Lang and Aaron Bricker) still remember when Uncle Sam B. Schneider's barn on the old homestead was struck by lightnlng in June, 1873. At that time the Town had purchased a fire engine, and the fire company was anxious to demonstrate its ability in handling it. Previous to this, the Babcock Fire Extinguisher Go. had sent a large chemical engine with some expert firemen to the town for the purpose of selling it. The agent took his men and the engine to the fire and the two companies became engaged in a wrangle. They finally wound up by turning the hose on one another. Mayor Hoffman, rushed in between the contending parties and received the benefit of the cross streams. He came out a most bedraggled creature but succeeded in restoring peace and order. However, in the meantime the barn was burned down.

While walking to the Benton Street Baptist Church at Kitchener, Mrs. Aaron Shantz, was stricken with apoplexy and died a few minutes later after being assisted into the residence of Dr. A. Henhoeffer. The deceased was in her 64th year and is survived by her husband, three sons and three daughters. Miss Nora Shantz, a missionary in West Nigeria, is one of the daughters.

They reside about a mile south-east of Berlin, on the Preston Road where they have a comfortable home. They have no family but have raised several children, namely: Mary Weber, Louis Kramp, Willie Grant and several others."

WEBER - A sad and fatal accident occurred on the 9th of January, resulting in the death of our dear brother, Isaac Weber, of Berlin, Ontario. On the above date, about noon, he started for his home a short distance south-east of Berlin, in company with Bro. Samuel Cressman, and when near the intersection of King and Cedar Strs, the king-bolt of his vehicle dropped out, throwing both men violently to the frozen ground, stunning them. The latter soon recovered, but Bro. Weber was carried to a house near by, he however recovered so far that he could be taken home. Medical aid had been promptly summoned, and his injuries were not considered fatal, but on Sunday following he was taken with an epileptic stroke, rendering him speechless, and from that time he began to sink until Tuesday the 12th when he passed away. He leaves a sorrowing companion, three adopted children (one married), an aged mother, one brother and one sister, besides many near and dear friends who deeply mourn their loss. Bro. Weber was a consistent member of the Mennonite church since his youth, and one of the pioneer Sunday school workers in our church. He always took a lively interest in everything pertaining to the prosperity of the Master's cause. His remains were conveyed to their last earthly resting place at C. Eby's M.H., on the 14th. Funeral services by David Hostetler, of Ohio, in German, and by David Garber, of Ohio, in English, to a house filled to its utmost capacity with sympathizing hearers. Text Isa. 3: 10, 11. Bro. Detwiler.-Nancy Weber was born near Breslau, Ont., March 10, 1853; died at the home of her son, Norman, near Breslau, March 4, 1939; aged 85 y. 11 m. 25 d. In 1878 she was united in marriage to Noah Detwiler, who predeceased her July 14, 1920. This was the first marriage ceremony performed by the late Bishop Elias Weber. To this union were born 3 sons and 3 daughters. One son predeceased the parents in his infancy. There remain to mourn the departure of a faithful Christian mother, 2 sons (Isaiah and Norman of Breslau), 3 daughters (Abbie of Breslau, Mrs. Ephraim Kinzie of Preston, and Mrs. Titus Shantz of Kitchener), 19 grandchildren, and many relatives and friends. When 18 years of age she accepted Christ as her Saviour, united with the Cressman Mennonite Church, and remained a faithful member until the Lord called her home. She always had a bright testimony of peace with God, appreciated in a very grateful and humble manner her salvation experience, and lived an exemplary life. She will be missed as a true Christian mother, a helpful neighbor, and a living witness to the grace of God. Funeral services were conducted on March 8 in the Cressman Mennonite Church at Breslau by Brethren Jonas Snider and Oscar Burkholder. Texts, Job 14: 14; Psa. 71: 20,21.

Weber.-Abram S. Weber was born in Waterloo Co., Ont., Nov. 15, 1855; died at his home in Berlin, Ont., March 1, 1913; aged 57 y. 3 m. 15 d. He was married to Esther Scheidel in October, 1877. To this union were born 4 sons and 2 daughters. He leaves to mourn his departure his sorrowing widow, 2 sons, 2 daughters, and 2 grandchildren. His death was caused by paralysis of 9 days' duration. He was a kind and loving husband and father and a good neighbor, and lived an exemplary Christian life, having in his younger years united with the Mennonite Church of which he was still a faithful member at the time of his death. Bro. Weber had been in failing health for some time. We believe that he realized his end was drawing near, and he leaves the comforting hope that he was ready to depart from this world and to meet his blessed Savior on the other shore. Funeral services were conducted at the Cressman Church, Breslau, March 3, by Bro. Jonas Snyder in German and Bro. Oscar Burkholder in English.

Cressman. - Barbara Cressman was born on May 2, 1842; died on Nov. 9, 1919; aged 77 y. 7 m. 7 d. She leaves two brothers and two sisters. She united with the Mennonite Church nearly forty years ago, and died in the faith. Funeral services were held Nov. 12 from the residence of Bro. Jacob Shantz, Breslau, thence to the Cressman Mennonite Church for service, and adjoining cemetery for burial. Services were conducted by Oscar Burkholder. Text, Matt. 20: 28.

Shantz. -- Magdalena Cressman, Bridgeport, Ont., widow of the late Jacob W. Shantz, Breslau, Ont., passed away at the Kitchener-Waterloo Hospital, Thursday morning, July 9, in her 89th year. Her late husband predeceased her six years. She is survived by 4 daughters (Mrs. R. J. Lyness, Fessenden, N. Dak. Mrs. Emma Schroeder, Earlsville, N. Y.; Mrs. Fanny Palms, Edgeley, N. Dak.; Mrs. Salina Nolan, Superior, Wis.), 3 sons (E. C. Shantz, Bridgeport, Ont.; A. C. Shantz, Mio, Mich. ; and Addison Shantz, Peace River, Alta.). One son (Nathan) predeceased her a number of years. There are also 27 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren. The funeral was held July 12 at the Cressman Mennonite Church, Breslau, Ont. Mrs. Magdalena Shantz

Mrs. Magdalena Shantz, Bridgeport,, widow of the late Jacob W. Shantz of Breslau, passed away at the K.-W. Hospital Thursday morning in her 89th year.

Predeceased by her husband six years ago, she is survived by four daughters, Mrs. R. J. Lyness of Fessenden, N.D., Mrs. Emma Schroeder, of Earlville, N.Y., Mrs. Fannie Palms of Edgeley, N.D., and Mrs. Salina Nolan of Superior, Wisc., three sons, Mr. E. C. Shantz, Bridgeport, Mr. A. C. Shantz, of Mio, Mich., and Mr. Addison Shantz of Peace River. One son, Nathan Shantz, predeceased her. Twenty-seven grand-chilrren and 29 great grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services were held from the home of her son, E. C. Shantz, on Sunday to the Cressman Mennonite Church in Breslau for services. Interment was made in the Cressman Mennonite Cemetery at Breslau.

BUSCHERT - Lydia Cressman was born Mar. 14, 1850; died at her home in Breslau, Ont., Mar. 19, 1927; aged 77 y. 5 d. On Nov. 26, 1871, she was united in marriage with Wendell Buschert. To this union were born 8 sons and 4 daughters. Her husband, 2 daughters, and 1 son have preceded her in death. She leaves 7 sons, 2 daughters, 29 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren. Sister Buschert united with the Mennonite Church during the ministry of Bishop Joseph Hagey, and died in the faith of her choice. The funeral was held on Tuesday afternoon, March 22, from her late home to the Cressman Mennonite Church, Breslau, and interment was made in adjoining cemetery. Services conducted by Oscar Burkholder. Text, 1 Cor. 13: 12.

CRESSMAN - Joseph Cressman was born near Breslau, Ont., on March 27, 1852; died at his house in Breslau, Dec. 20, 1925; aged 73 y. 8 m. 23 d. In 1880 he was united in marriage with Lydia Wenger, who with one son (Milton (sic)), and one daughter (Elvina), with five grandchildren, remain to mourn her loss. Two daughters (Ada and Annie Marietta (sic)), and one son (Leroy), preceded him to the great beyond. Bro. Cressman was converted in his early married life, united with the Mennonite Church, and remained loyal to his death. He suffered nearly three years with paralysis, and during the last year it was his constant wish to depart and be with his Lord. Funeral services were held Dec. 23 at the Cressman Mennonite Church. Services in charge of E. Sievenpipher and O. Burkholder.

Cressman. - Moses S. Cressman was born near Breslau, Ont., Aug. 3, 1857; died in the Kitchener Hospital June 19, 1924; aged 66 y. 10 m. 15 d. In 1882 he was united in marriage with Lovina Snyder, who died in 1906. To this union were born six children: Dalton, Ivan, Senetta (predeceased), Era, Aulton and Linean. In 1908 Bro. Cressman was married to Maria Snyder, who with the five children survives to mourn the death of a kind husband and father. Bro. Cressman united with the Mennonite Church in 1889, and remained a faithful member until death called him. Funeral services were held June 22, conducted by Brethren E. Sievenpiper, Jonas Snider, and Oscar Burkholder.

Schmidt - Leah Eshleman was born in Wilmot Tp., Waterloo Co., Ont., March 29, 1846; died Sept. 12, 1916; aged 70 y. 5 m. 14 d. She was united in marriage to David B. Schmitt April 12, 1871, lived in matrimony 24 years. He preceded her to the glory world 21 years. This union was blest with 7 sons, 5 of whom survive to mourn the loss of a kind and loving mother. She united with the Mennonite Church a number of years ago and remained faithful until death. Funeral services were conducted at the Latschar Menmnonite Church on Sept. 15, by the brethren Manasseh Hallman and Jonas Snider. Texts, Heb. 11: 16; I Cor. 15: 55, 56.

SNYDER. - On the 11th of June, in Waterloo Co., Ont., Lucy Ann, wife of Jonas B. Snyder, aged 29 years and 15 days. She was buried on the 13th at Eby's Meeting house in Berlin, and was one of the largest funerals held in this county. She was a devoted Christian, a beloved sister in the Mennonite church, which she and her husband were joined about a year ago, a loving wife and kind mother, and all who knew her respected and loved her Before death, she had a glimpse of the bright beyond, and now she is there at rest. She leaves a deeply bereaved husband and four small children, the youngest being at the time of her death only 16 days old, besides many friends and relatives to mourn their loss. Funeral services were held by Elias Weber and Noah Stauffer, from Rom. 5: 1 and Heb. 13: 14.

Ezra Snyder

HAMILTON. A former resident of Kitchener, the death occurred here on Tuesday of Ezra S. Snyder, 79. Born at Lexington, Mr. Snyder had lived near Blair, later moving to Kitchener where he resided for several years.

He is survived by his wife. two daughters, Mrs. E. Brubacher, Grimsby, and Mrs. Fred Raynor, of Rittman, Ohio; two sisters, Mrs. Aaron Shantz, Waterloo, and Miss. Barbara Snyder, of Bridgeport; six grandchildren also survive.

The funeral will be held this (Friday) afternoon from the home. of his daughter, Mrs. E. Brubacher, Grimsby, to First Mennonite Church, Kitchener, at 3 p.m. for service. Interment will be made in First Mennonite Cemetery.

Surviving are her husband, 1 son (Alfred), 1 daughter (Elva -- Mrs. Oscar Martin), and an adopted daughter (Lizzie). Lena predeceased her 29 years ago. There remain 4 grandchildren, 2 brothers, and 2 sisters. Sister Shantz accepted Christ in her early years. She loved her Lord and was ready to testify for Him. She united with the Mennonite Church and was a faithful worshiper at the Waterloo congregation. During the sickness she was patient and ready to depart and be with Christ. Bro. Moses Brubacher conducted service at the home. Text, Rom. 8. Bro. J. B. Martin had charge at the First Mennonite Church, Kitchener. Texts, I Cor. 2: 9,10; Psa. 17: 15. Joseph S. Shantz - Following a lengthy illness, Joseph S. Shantz, age 66, 61 Cameron street north, Kitchener, died Saturday. A son of Mr. and Mrs. Isaac B. Shantz, deceased was born in Waterloo County on June 21, 1872. He was married to Martha E. Snyder at Elmira in September, 1902. Mr. Shantz was a well-known furniture traveller [sic] for many years. He was a member of Bethany Mennonite church. Surviving are his widow, three sons, Lorne I., and Harold J., both of Woodstock, and Rev. Ward of Toronto and four grandchildren. Funeral services were held on Monday to Bethany Mennonite church with interment in Woodland Cemetery. Rev. C. N. Good, pastor of the church, officiated.

Weidman.--Polly Weidman, oldest daughter of Solomon and Leah Martin, was born Nov. 28, 1854, in Woolwich township, Waterloo Co., Ont. In 1869 she with her parents moved to Huron Co., Ont. On Sept. 24, 1878, she was united in marriage to Elias Weidman. In 1892 they with their family moved to McKinley township, Huron Co., Mich., where they have since resided. She is survived by a loving husband and nine children: Isaac and Albert of Detroit, Mich; Edmund and Moses of Pigeon, Mich., Norman, of Aurora, Ill.; Laura Schaaf of Imlay City, Mich.; Ida Schaaf and Salome Smith, of Pigeon, Mich.; Sarah at home, 23 grandchildren, 2 sisters, and 1 brother, and a host of friends. She was afflicted with Bright's Disease for several years, and became seriously ill in February, gradually declining until June 19, when gangrene developed, from which she suffered much pain until July 21, when her spirit passed away. In 1881 she was converted and united with the Mennonite Church, living a faithful Christian life until the end. Funeral services were held at the Berne Mennonite Church July 24, by Ed Brown and Peter Ropp. Texts, Job 14: 14; Isa. 35: 10. Buried in Mennonite Cemetery.

Samuel Shoemaker, a young man belonging to this town, died at his father's house early Thursday morning. He had been employed on the steamer Manitoba, on Lake Huron, which met with an accident recently. His death was the result of exposure and hardship while that vessel was disabled. Shoemaker walked from Owen Sound to Elmira, after landing, while in a very weak condition. Isaiah Bowman was born in Waterloo County of Pennsylvania German parents, who moved to Michigan when he was a small child.

His great scholastic achievements won for him distinction in many fields and he became known as one of the world's foremost geographers. A graduate of Harvard and Yale Universities, he became a professor at Yale. He led expeditions to South America in 1907 and 1913 and served as geographer and geologist on a Peruvian expedition in 1911.

He was President of Johns Hopkins University from 1935 to 1948.

Dr. Bowman accompanied the American delegation to the Peace Conference following World War I and was adviser to Presidents Wilson and Roosevelt. He also took part in the World Security Conference in Dunbarton Oaks in 1944.

In honour of his memory and in recognition of his many accomplishments, the University of Waterloo named its Social Science Building, "The Isaiah Bowman Building

University of Waterloo quietly removes plaque, portrait of anti-Semite
American scholar calls on UW to publicly explain why it was wrong to name a building after 'lifelong eugenicist, anti-Semite, and racist'

WATERLOO REGION - The University of Waterloo has quietly removed a portrait and plaque from a campus building dedicated to a noted scholar and administrator who was also a notorious anti-Semite.

When it was built in the late 1960s, the Environment 1 building \emdash known as EV-1 \emdash was named after Isaiah Bowman, a pre-eminent geographer and adviser to Franklin Roosevelt who was born in Waterloo County in the late 1800s.

But an American researcher says Bowman was a virulent anti-Semite, a racist and strong supporter of eugenics.

Sandford Jacoby, a Distinguished Research Professor in history, management and public policy at the University of California Los Angeles, raised a red flag earlier this month about Waterloo's Bowman connection after he learned about Bowman's history of anti-Semitism, racism and support for eugenics.

"After a short delay due to the pandemic, we removed the material this year," said university spokesperson Nick Manning.

The university is committed to address systemic racism in all its forms, he said.

Naming the building after Bowman does not reflect the values of the university today, Manning said.

The name was officially changed to Environment 1 in 2008, and the university just got around to removing the portrait and plaque.

Jacoby came across Bowman's University of Waterloo connection while researching U.S. immigration policy before and during the Second World War.

Knowing he had at least one family member, an uncle, who was murdered by the Nazis during the Holocaust, Jacoby started researching what happened to his relatives under the Nazis.

That's how he learned of Bowman's work and influence and discovered online a publication called "The First 50 Years: A History of the University of Waterloo Environmental Studies Faculty," written by Robert Shipley, a retired school of urban planning professor in time for the faculty's anniversary in May 2019.

Jacoby was outraged after learning the University of Waterloo had named a building after Bowman and has never publicly explained why that was wrong.

Bowman was born in 1875 into a Mennonite family near Linwood, in what was then Waterloo County. The family soon moved, joining a Mennonite colony in Michigan.

He left Michigan to attend Harvard University, and eventually became a professor of geography at Yale. He became a Presbyterian and married the daughter of a Harvard professor.

He left Yale to become president of the American Geographical Society. In 1918, U.S. President Woodrow Wilson asked Bowman and the society to help redraw the borders of Europe after the First World War.

"It launched his career as a Washington insider," said Jacoby. "In 1938 he became an adviser to President Franklin D. Roosevelt on refugee affairs."

Bowman successfully supported very low quotas on Jewish refugees fleeing the Nazis. Instead of allowing Jews into the U.S., Bowman said they should be settled in places with few whites, so as not to "antagonize" them, such as Guyana, Kenya and the Philippines.

"Bowman was complicit in efforts to make it difficult for Jewish refugees to escape to the U.S. during the Nazi period," said Jacoby.

Bowman played a minor role in the 1945 San Francisco peace conference that led to the creation of the United Nations. During his time as president of Johns Hopkins University \emdash from 1935 to 1948 \emdash Bowman discriminated against African-American students and Jewish professors, said Jacoby.

Jacoby knew all this when he read the history of Waterloo's environment faculty and learned the university had named a building after Bowman. Jacoby immediately contacted Shipley with a bunch of questions.

That was on April 11 \emdash almost three years after Shipley's departmental history was first published.

Shipley said he emailed Jean Andrey, the dean of the environment faculty, to let her know Jacoby would be getting in touch with some questions about Bowman and the university.

Within days Bowman's photo and plaque were quietly removed.

The University of Waterloo is going about the situation all wrong, said Jacoby.

"Transparency regarding its removal of the Bowman plaque is vital," said Jacoby.

"The university ought to be proud, not secretive about what it's done \emdash students must learn about the past so that it will never be repeated."

Bowman's ideas can still be seen in headlines today.

"Just the other day Britain announced a plan to send asylum seekers to Rwanda, stooping to racist, anti-immigrant sentiments of pro-Brexit voters," said Jacoby. "It's eerily reminiscent of Bowman's approach."
