SALSBERGER. - On the 5th of October, in Strasburg, Waterloo Co., Ontario, of the infirmities of old age, Sister Salsberger, widow of Philip Salsberger, aged 88 years. Her father, John Biehn, was the original settler on what is now known as the Doon property, where deseased* was born in 1801. She was a widow for twenty-seven years, and had been in poor health a long time. Her remains were consigned to the grave on the 8th at Weaver" church. WATERLOO COUNTY PIONEER'S INTERESTING HISTORY

Story of Life of Late John Bean who Settled in Wilmot Township in 1835. - Thrilling Adventure on the High Seas.

It is to be regretted that in the rush of modern life there is a tendency to forget those who, in the days long since gone by, through hardship and sacrifice made possible the advantages and privileges we now enjoy.

We become so occupied with the affairs of the moment that we frequently fail to appreciate the fact that there are certain benefits to be derived from a study of our ancestors. "Nature," says Emerson in his essay on History, "is an endless combination and repetition of a very few laws. Generation after generation she hums the same old air with innumerable variations." To gain a clear insight into the Present it is imperative that we study the Past.

The study of family history is frequently made difficult by the fact that no person has assumed the re- sponsibility of recording it. The duties of the family historian are invariably arduous, too often unremunerated, and the result is that this task is avoided. Fortunate, indeed, is the community where some public-spirited citizen or organization sponsors the task of compiling and preserving the records of the splendid men and women who, in days gone by, laid the foundations. of our present society.

In the old Stauffer Cemetery, one mile south of Haysville, sleep some two score persons, among them four or five of Wilmot's early pioneers. Their names are for the most part unfamiliar to the younger generation and their descendants have scattered far afield. But there is one outstanding exception, one whose descendants remain to take a part in the affairs of Waterloo County, one who by his activities a half a century ago left his impress on the community. It is with his and his ancestral history that the writer of this article wishes to deal.

Grave of John Bean.

Two plain stones mark the spot where lies the last mortal remains of John Bean (formerly spelled Biehn) and his wife Anna (Shiery) Bean. Born near the village of Doon in 1815, John Bean, accompanied by his young wife, came to South-West Wilmot in the year 1835, where he bought 200 acres of land from the Canada Company, the north half of which is now known as the Bean homestead. There he spent the remainder of his life, dying in 1898, his wife predeceasing him by 17 years. His younger son, Isaac, now the only surviving member of his family, lives retired on the homestead and now in his 79th year enjoys the distinction of having spent nearly four-score years on the farm where he was born. Fred Bean, second son of Isaac, now owns and operates the old homestead.

History of "John Biehns"

John Bean, the subject of this sketch, came of a long line of progenitors of the same name, the Christian name "John" evidently being a favorite in the Bean family since we know his father, grandfather and great grandfather bore that name. The curtain rises on the Bean history in the year 1700, when in a canton in Switzerland between Zurich and Berne, the first John Bean, of whom we have record, was born. As is the way of the world he grew up, married, and begot children and in the year 1742 when his son John was five years old, decided to seek his fortune and freedom in America. Accompanied by friends and relatives he engaged passage on a vessel that sailed from a French port. This voyage to the new world was so eventful that the adventures encountered therein might well have been taken from the stirring tales of Robert Louis Stevenson. A voyage with a climax 80 dramatic and savouring 90 strongly of barratry and piracy on the high seas that it could well be classed with the truth that is stranger than fiction. This adventure was given little publicity in the early days for the simple reason that the tenets of the religious beliefs of the earlier Beans frowned on the use of force even in a just cause. In order to avoid the semblance of an anti-climax in this sketch the telling of this tale will be deferred until the close of the narrative.

Reaching America, the Beans settled in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, where they followed the occupation of farming for many years. The five-year-old lad of the eventful voyage grew up and married a maiden named Barbara Fried. Of the six children of this union the one born in 1776 was named John, who was the father of the Wilmot pioneer.

Trek to Canada.

After spending half a century in Pennsylvania, the Beans decided to seek their fortunes further afield and in the year 1800 the John Bean, branch of the family began a long "trek" to Canada, while another section, the Paul Bean branch, moved to Texas and from that time. to this the two branches have never been in touch with each other. A few years ago the Saturday Evening Post in an article descriptive of early days in the "Pan-Handle State mentioned particularly a Judge. Bean who was an outstanding exponent of law and order when that state was rife with banditry and outlawry. The Canadian Beans have often wondered if he were one of the Paul Bean branch.

Settle in Waterloo County.

Just 134 years ago the John Bean family came to Waterloo County, bringing with them 9 covered wagons, 22 horses and a number of cattle. The major difficulties encountered were on the trip through the Alleghany Mountains, the crossing of the Niagara River and the penetration of the great Beverley swamp. They took up 3600 acres of land near Tow-town (now Doon) purchased from Robert Beasley, and John Baptist James Wilson and John Roseneau, the contract being signed July 18th, 1800. This land, known as the Bean tract, extended from the bend of the river at Doon to just west of Blair. The John Bean born in 1776 (father of the Wilmot pioneer) was married to Nancy Ann Bechtel in 1799 and their oldest child, Mary, born in 1800, was the first white child born in Waterloo County. She married John P. Saltzberger in 1819 and died December 29, 1888. There is a rival claimant for this honour but the Beans assert that the honour rightfully belongs to them. This John Bean had a combination grist and sawmill at Tow-town, which he sold to a man named Ferry. The name of the village was then changed to Ferry's Mills and later to Doon.

Had Fine Character.

John Bean, the Wilmot pioneer, had certain qualities that were characteristic of of the Beans history knew them. Quiet of speech, as refraining from interfering in the affairs of others, loving truth and fair play, he won the respect and esteem of his neighbours and associates. A faithful member of the Mennonite Church, he donated the land where now stands Bean's Mennonite Church.

A medium-sized man, inclined to be slight in build, he possessed the ability to perform his work on the farm with a facility that his appearance belied. Many a man working with him for the first time and anticipating an easy time in keeping pace with Mr. Bean found to his surprise and chagrin that his task was no sinecure. Measured and steady were the blows of his axe,

no hurry, no waste-motion, but with a rythm of stroke that was the same at the close of the day as in the morning. Of a quiet and peaceful, disposition, he was, like many quiet men, fearless when aroused. He resented injustice in any form and an incident is told that illustrates this characteristic. An agitation to build the first school in this pioneer settlement was being opposed by a certain ratepayer for obviously selfish reasons. At a public meeting, where this man was airing his views, Mr. Bean arose and denounced his attitude so scathingly that listeners for years afterward referred to his reply as a "classic". Perhaps he inherited this faculty of rising to the occasion from his great grandfather who, as referred to earlier in the narrative, participated in an unusual adventure which was as follows:

Colorful Ocean Voyage.

In the year 1712 the Beans, with a number of compatriots, set sail for America. They secured passage on a vessel that was leaving from a port in the Bay of Biscay. Who owned the vessel, of what nationality were the captain and crew, the compiler of this narrative could not ascertain. In the light of what happened envoyage cannot conceivably imagine that they were British. When they were at sea two months (a crack liner now makes the trip in less than a week) things began to go wrong. The passengers were informed by the captain that the food supply was running low and it was imperative that they be put on short rations. Shortly after this, disease broke out and many passengers sickened and died. Still, there was nothing unusual in this, just the fortune of the sea and what one might expect. But there were certain other things that were out of the ordinary. No sooner were the unfortunate victims of disease consigned to the ocean than any possessions they had aboard were confiscated by the ship's officials. Suspicion grew among the passengers that they were the victims of a nefarious plot that the issuing of short rations was not because of low supplies but just a diabolical method of undermining the vitality of these peace-loving emigrants in order to secure their possessions when they ultimately succumbed to starvation and disease, that the captain could land them in a short time if he so desired, but was deliberately keeping the vessel at sea. Then, on the 82nd day at sea, the drama opened in earnest. By one bold stroke the passengers seized the captain and crew and took possession of the ship. They made an investigation and their worst suspicions were confirmed, there was plenty of food on board ship. An ultimatum was then issued to the captain-forty-eight hours to land the passengers or pay the penalty of death. The captain, while scoundrel, was no fool. He read in the faces of the aroused people an inexorable purpose. Their lives and the lives of their children jeopardized by his villainy, they had reached a point where they would do exactly as they had stated. Had this captain been hundreds of miles at sea he certainly would have been in a tough "spot". But fortunately for himself, he was not. Under his direction the helm was turned and in one-half the time stipulated the passengers were landed on a point on the eastern coast of America. Overjoyed at their deliverance, they knelt and offered up a prayer of thanksgiving, and reverting to their former habit of thought, forgave the captain and crew, permitting them to sail away without inflicting well- deserved punishment.

John Biehn.

Here is an individual who can be aptly called the "Grand Old Man" of this section. He was born May 12, 1813 He was married to Barbara (Groh) Sherich in 1834. She was born Oct. 25, 1818, and died March 31, 1881. They had eleven children. They came to Wilmot on June 16, 1834, and settled in the wilderness, and cleared up the farm upon which he now lives a retired life. When they arrived they erected a log cabin, cut a hole in the side for a door, put down some loose boards and started house- keeping. Their first child, Barbara, was born in this humble pioneer home, and was the first child born in the neighborhood. For some time Mr, Biehn's brother Jacob, lived with them. At that time the old four in hand stage coach then travelled between Niagara and Goderich, and often it would require seven hours to reach Stratford, a distance of seventeen miles. Deer were in abundance, and if other delicacies happened to be conspicuously scarce in the cabin larder, venison would often form a savory morsel for the festal board. Despite the drawbacks and privations incident to a pioneer life, Mr. Biehn succeeded in clearing up a 200 acre farm and provided for his children.

On May 12th next he will have attained the advanced age of eighty- five years. Yet he has a mind as perfect as one in the vigor of youth, and is an agreeable conversationalist. In the latter particular be does not exhibit the least sign of old age. What surprised me most was to see this octogenarian read with ease small newspaper print without the aid of glasses. He uses neither tobacco or intoxicating liquor. He informed the writer that on one occasion he smoked tobacco to cure the toothache, but it made him dizzy without having any permanent beneficial effect upon the offensive molar, and he has not used the weed since. He has also had some narrow escapes in his time. Once when he was down in a well, the man at the top accidentally let a stone drop on his head. He was drawn up in a dazed condition, but soon after recovered without serious results. About thirteen years ago he fell from a load of hay with a pitchfork in his hands. In this mishap be injured his neck, and broke the crystal of his watch. He will converse for hours without a sign of fatigue, and his memory is remarkably keen. His present robust physical condition would indicate that he will easily reach the century mark.

In my next letter I will endeavor to give some very interesting sketches of Haysville and vicinity.

DEATH OF MRS. BOWMAN.

The funeral of the late Mrs. S. W. Bowman, relict of the late Samuel W. Bowman, took place Monday afternoon from the residence of Mrs. J. S. Bowman, 32 Scott street,, to the East End Mennonite cemetery. The deceased passed away on Friday and had she lived until the 6th of November, she would have attained the ripe old age of 89 years. She had for almost twenty years had her home in Berlin, the last eight years with her daughter, Mrs. J. S. Bowman. Up till April she had enjoyed unusually good health for a person so advanced in years. But since then she suffered from heart trouble and dropsy and grew gradually weaker until she passed away. She was born in Doon and had lived in this county nearly all her lifetime.

She is survived by the following sons and daughters, all of whom, with the exception of one, were here in September in a body to see her: John J., Hamilton; Rev. Menno, Berlin; Allan, Blair; Simon P., Chicago: Mrs. Aaron Moyer, Mildmay, Samuel St. Paul; Mrs. J. S. Bowman, Berlin; Mrs. H. A. Brubacher, Berlin, and Noah, Winnipeg.

Among those who attended the funeral of the late Mrs. S. W. Bowman Monday afternoon were the following: Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Bean, Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Bean, Mr. and Mrs. Noah Bean, Haysville; Mrs. Henry Bean, New Hamburg. and Mr. and Mrs. Peter Shantz, Preston.

Cassel. - On February 7th, 1906, near New Dundee, Ont., Bro. Jesse B. Cassel, who was born in Montgomery Co., Pa., Aug. 20, 1827, and was thus in his 79th year. He contracted pneumonia only about five days before he died. He leaves a widow, three sons and two daughters to mourn his death. His end was peace. Funeral services at the Blenheim Mennonite Church, Feb. 10. Bro. Noah Stauffer preached in German from II Tim. 4: 8 and Bro. E. S. Hallman in English from I Cor. 15: 57, to a full house. Interment in the cemetery adjoining.

On the 20th of Sept., 1900, at New Hamburg, Ontario, Bro. Henry R. Cassel, as we trust, fell asleep in Jesus, at the advanced age of 65 years, 4 months and 12 days. He suffered with Bright,s disease for a little over eight months, and had a desire to go home and be with Christ which is far better. He was born in Montgomery Co., Pa., and leaves a widow, two sons and one daughter to mourn his death. Funeral services were held at the Blenheim M. H. on the 23rd, were largely attended, and conducted at the house by Jos. Nargang and Isaiah Rosenberger, and at the M. H. by Noah Stauffer, from Isa. 38: 1, and by Amos S. Cressman from Heb. 2: 6.

Death of Mr. Jacob Saltzberry - One of the old pioneers has passed away in the person of Mr. Jacob Saltzberry. He had made his home for the last 3 years with his daughter, Esther (Mrs. Miller), Haysville. For the last ten weeks he had been ailing with dropsy and on Sunday, Aug. 20th, about 10 o'clock a.m. passed quietly away in his 87th year. He leaves to mourn his loss, 3 daughters, Lovina, Mrs. J. T. Underwood; Esther, Mrs. Geo. A. Miller, Haysville and Mary, Mrs. H. P. Ellis, Berlin. One son and two daughters died several years ago, Moses, Veronica, Mrs. A. Hilborn and Katherine, Mrs. Geo. Miller. His wife predeceased him about 9 years. the funeral will be held from Mrs. Miller's residence in Haysville to Blenheim cemetery. Service at the house at 1.30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 22nd.

BEAN, U. GRANT. His father was David Bean, who was born Nov. 12, 1830, in Wilmot Township,Waterloo County, Ontario, Canada, and his mother was Anna Martha Truemner and born July 28, 1837, in Gilseberg, Tryso County, Kurhessen, Germany. The subject of this sketch was born in Huron County, Canada, June 20, 1868. They came to Michigan in 1878. Married Emma Dietzel . Her father was Traugott Dietzel, who was born in Saxenweimer, Germany, Nov. 22, 1834, and her mother was Ernestina Blacksmith, born in Welshendorf, Germany, Aug. 27, 1844. Children are: Martha Madeline, born April 6, 1893, and Edith Helen, born March 31, 1896. Mr. Bean's father died when he was 11 years old and he with his mother and five brothers moved to Winsor Township when it was nothing but a wilderness of green swampy land. After years of toil and hardship, such as early settlers only know, he has succeeded in clearing and paying for one of the best 80-acre farms in Winsor Township. Mr. Bean has five sisters and three brothers living and one brother who is dead.

The Puzzle Tombstone which marks the graves of Henrietta and Susanna Bean in Rushes Cemetery, near Crosshill, Wellesley Township, Ontario.

Rushes Cemetery is a community burial ground; the earliest recorded burial is 1848. It was originally begun by a group of local Methodists.

Samuel Bean was first a teacher, then a doctor and later a pastor in the Evangelical Association. While practising the medical profession, he lived in Linwood, Ontario, and it was during this period that he erected the puzzle stone. He later married for a third time, lived in New York and Iowa and was lost at sea off the coast of Cuba in 1904. He was clearly a brilliant man with a searching mind who found pleasure in conundrums similar to that found on this gravestone.

Henrietta and Susanna Bean were the first two wives of Samuel Bean. Henrietta Fury was born in Philadelphia in 1842 and married Samuel Bean there early in 1865. She died 27 September 1865, after seven months of marriage. Her funeral card was a puzzle similar to the pictured stone, with 19 letters across and 19 down. The reader started with the middle letter and read outward in a spiral. The card read:

In memoriam Henriettah Furry Bean born in Penn. married in Philadelphia to Samuel Bean, M.D. and went with him to Canada leaving all her friends behind - Died in Linwood the 27th of Sep. 1865 after an illness of 11 weeks, aged 23 years, 2 months and 17 days, she was a model wife, 1 of 1000 - much regretted by her sorrowing husband and all who knew her - Lived a godly life for 5 years and died happy in the Lord - Peace be to her ashes - So mote it be. 1

Samuel Bean's second wife was Susanna Clegg, who had been born between Wellesley and Crosshill in 1840. She and Samuel had a daughter, also named Susanna, before he was bereaved a second time on 27 April 1867.

The two wives are buried side by side. Their husband prepared a cryptogram, similar although not identical to that on Henrietta's funeral card. It was 15 letters across, and 15 down and carved on a white marble stone. The reader must solve the puzzle by reading in a zig-zag fashion. It says (with several spelling discrepancies):

In memoriam Henrietta, Ist wife of S. Bean, M.D. who died 27th Sep. 1865, aged 23 years, 2 months and 17 days and Susanna his 2nd wife who died 27th April, 1867, aged 26 years, 10 months and 15 days, 2 better wives 1 man never had, they were gifts from God but are now in Heaven. May God help me so to meet them there. Reader! meet us in heaven.

The inscription was first decoded by cemetery caretaker John Hammond in 1947. The Victorian stone has weathered badly. Wellesley Township and the Wellesley Historical Society were responsible for the duplication of the unusual marker, this time in durable gray granite. The letters are picked out in black, so that anyone wishing to study and solve the puzzle may do so with ease. The duplicate was erected in 1982.

BEAN, SAMUEL was born in Wilmot Township on March 24, 1844, the fifth son of Abraham and Susannah Bean. For some years he taught school, and then decided to enter the medical profession. His card appeared in March 8, 1867: "Samuel Bean M. D. Graduate of the Eclectic College of Pennsylvania Is now permanently located in Linwood and prepared to practice Physic Surgery and Midwifery"

He speaks German and English.(1)The Eclectic Medical College of Pennsylvania was a diploma mill owned by a man named Buchanan providing bogus medical diplomas, for which the usual fee was about $75. Bean's name is on a list of the names of Buchanan's "graduates" which appeared in the Philadelphia Bulletin, but does not appear on the Ontario Medical Register.(2) He is said to have practiced in Linwood for a few years, probably not more than two or three as he was licensed as a minister of the Evangelical Church in 1868, and was active in the New York and Iowa conferences.

By 1893 he was listed as practising in Bronson, Florida, where he was also engaged in fruit farming. For a short time he located in Ellzey, Florida, before returning to Bronson. His notice there in 1900 included the fact that he had attended lectures in Syracuse, Kansas.(3) On January 28, 1904, on a return trip from Cuba, the boat capsized and he was lost. It was reported that all efforts to recover the body were unavailing. He is best known for the cryptic epitaph marking the grave of his first two wives, regarding which further details may be found in the W. H. S. report for 1982 -. vol. 70 p. 114. & Vol. 71 pg. 10

BOWMAN.-On the 22d of December, near Mannheim, Waterloo Co., Ont., Anna Cressman, widow of the late Pre. Moses Bowman. She was born near Freeport, Ont., Aug. 7, 1828, and reached the age of 74 Y., 4 M., 15 D. Buried on the 25th at Mannheim, followed to her last earthly resting place by a host of relatives and friends. She was beloved and respected and we mourn not as those who have no hope.

Noah Cressman, was born in Waterloo twp., in 1837. When he was 3, his father died. Five years later, his mother married Jacob Allbright, Niagara District, and the family moved there. At age 15, he left home, and soon obtained employement as a teacher. Later, he opened a telegraph office and drug establishment in Waterloo, with a branch in Stratford. In July 1862, he married the youngest daughter of Rev. M. Whiting. he died in Waterloo Village, Sept 5, 1864; survived by his wife and an infant.

Died - Another of the pioneers of this district passed away at his home here on Wednesday evening the 25th inst in the person of Mr. Menno Bean. He bad been a sufferer from rheumatism for several years and for the past year had been fined to bed. The late Mr. Bean was born in Wilmot Township 73 years ago where he spent the greater part of his life at farming. About fourteen years ago he retired and came to this town, since which time he has resided here. Ile was married to Mary Reddaway and their union was blessed with five children. One son Russel predeceased him. He is survived by his sorrowing widow and four children, namely: Richard of Brantford, Jacob of West De Pere Wis., William R. of Prince Albert, Sask., and Mrs. Andrew Munay of Innerkip. The funeral took place from his late residence on Jacob St, on Saturday afternoon at two o' clock to the Methodist church for service thence to Stauffer's Cemetery for interment.

DEATH OF NOAH BEAN

Highly Respected and a Prosperous Farmer of Wilmot Twp. Funeral on Saturday Was Very Largely Attended

On Wednesday, May 13th, a highly respected resident of Wilmot Township passed away after a short illness in the person of Noah Bean. A little more than a year ago while out driving, he was thrown from his buggy sustaining severe injuries from which he never recovered fully. About two weeks ago complications set in which confined him to his house, terminating in his death from pernicious anaemia, at the age of 65 years, 1 month and 13 days. Deceased who was the third son of the late John Bean, was a successful and prosperous farmer. He was of a retiring disposition and never sought public honors, though he served very acceptably as public school trustee, for a number of terms, finding in farming on approved principles and the cultivation of fruit trees in which he took great interest, a sufficient scope for exercise of his activities. His farm, the south half of the old homestead, 2 miles south-west of Haysville, with its up-to-date buildings, is one of the finest in this part of the country. He was a zealous, consistent and faithiul member of the church of the Mennonite Brethren in Christ. in politics he was a strong Liberal. About thirty years ago he was united in marriage to Susannah Shantz, daughter of the late Joseph Y. Shantz, of the Huron Road. Six children were born of this marriage all of whom survive: Simon a Rosemount, Sask., Lizzie, of Vineland, Ont.; Bernice, Warren, Susie at home and Salome, teacher at New Dundee. The bereaved widow and children have sustained a severe and irreparable loss and have the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community. The funeral on Saturday, May 16th, was attended by an immense concourse of sorrowing relatives, friends and neighbors, who came to pay their last tribute of respect to the departed one. The services were conducted by the pastor of the Bethel church, Rev. Mr. Sievenpiper, of New Dundee. The remains were interred in the Stauffer cemetery near Haysville. Three brothers and one sister, also survive, George and Isaac, farmers near Haysville, David, editor of the Chronicle-Telegraph, Waterloo, and Elizabeth of Waterloo.

Death of George Bean

A well-known former resident of New Hamburg, Mr. Geo. Bean, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Selina Coxson, in Waterloo last Wednesday at the age of 86 years. He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Bean and was born in Wilmot Township. He farmed successfully in Wilmot for many years and then retired to New Hamburg. He resided here for several years until the death of, his wife in 1922. Since then he made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Coxson, in Waterloo. The deceased was a faithful member of the Methodist, later the United church and was greatly esteemed for his many good qualities. There are left to mourn him four son and six daughters, namely, Herbert, Saskatchewan, Percy, Brantford, Russel, North Carolina, Earl, Regina, Sask., Mrs. H. Merner, Chicago, Mrs. Elsie Vance, Woodstock, Mrs. W. E. Motherall, Hastings, Mrs. Selina Coxson, Waterloo, Mrs. J. G. Rabb, Windsor, and Mrs. M. Hunter, Onondaga, Ont., also 23 grandchildren and one brother, Isaac, of Haysville, survive. He was predeceased by his wife in 1922. The funeral was held from the Schreiter Funeral Home, Kitchener, at 2 o'clock, Saturday, and thence to the Riverside Cemetery, New Hamburg. Rev. F. Matheson was in charge.

David S. Bean, "the sixth son of John and Annie (Scheirich) Bean, was born about the year 1850. He, after passing his earlier years engaged in agricultural pursuits on his father's farm, obtained an education, and choosing the teaching profession in life, he successfully passed his examinations in 1867, and in January, 1868, he commenced teaching in our public schools. By his great energy and perseverance he became one of the most successful teachers in the county, and after having taught for twenty years he retired from the profession in December, 1888. In January, 1889, he purchased the "Waterloo Chronicle" and has since through his ability in journalism, made it one of the ablest and most influential weekly papers of the county, and one that exercises a powerful influence, not only in Waterloo County, but throughout all the adjoining counties. He is married to Mary Ann Fry and has a family of several children."

TRIBUTES OF RESPECT PAID BY CITIZENS

Funeral of Late David Bean Was Largely At tended on Sunday

IMPRESSIVE SERVICES

Former business associates and members of various civic bodies and organisations with which he had been identified together with a large gathering of relatives, assembled to honor the memory of the late David Bean, whose funeral was held from his late residence, George St. Waterloo, on Sunday afternoon.

Rev. W. H. Harvey, pastor of the Waterloo Methodist Church of which the late Mr. Bean had been an active and leading member for many years, was the officiating clergyman and in tributes to his character and works recalled his activity as a teacher in the schools of the county, his contributions to the progress of the community' while in responsible offices of trust, including the position of mayor and chairman of various civic bodies in Waterloo and also as an energetic worker in the church. Honorable, upright and alert to serve his fellows, his life. he said, was worthy of emulation, embodying as it did the attributes of the best citizenship. Although laid aside in his prime, he had accomplished much for his day and generation in the short span of fifty years of active life and was every sense a worthy, high-minded citizen, who commanded the general respect and regard of the community.

Members of the choir of the Waterloo Methodist Church and Zion Evangelical church were present and sang several of the favorite hymns of the late Mr. Bean.

The bearers were Thos. Hilliard, George Diebel, S. B. Bricker, M. S. Hallman, R. O. Dobbin and A. Werner of Elmira. Interment was made in Mount Hope Cemetery.

The beautiful floral tributes which surrounded the casket were sent by the following:

After a life of great activity in the educa.. journalistic and municipal fields in Waterloo County, Mr. David Bean, of Waterloo, passed away peacefully on Tuesday It was fitting that, being a lover music, he should retire to rest on the night ...eding his demise to the strains of music, ... his last waking hours on earth happy ...fal.

A men and women in various ....will remember with warm ... intruction they received from at Blenheim, Baden, Washington during a teaching career ex... knowledge, enthusiasm for his work, interest in all phases of student life and firmness of discipline were among the factors contributing to an enviable record of success as a teacher.

In 1889 he retired from the teaching profession to enter the journalistic field, becoming the proprietor and editor of the Waterloo Chronicle.
Being well and favorably known throughout the county the newspaper quickly expanded under his direction until it became the most widely-read weekly newspaper in the county. Ten years later, in company with his son, D. Alex Bean, he purchased the Daily Telegraph, and
was actively engaged in the oversight of the two newspapers until he was afflicted with the malady that made it necessary for him to retire

As a citizen he took a keen interest in municipal affairs, and was a member of the Library Board for a number of years, after which he entered the Town Council as a Councillor, and then served as Mayor for three consecutive terms. During the time that he sat in the Council and Water Commission a number of important enterprises were undertaken, the most i portant being the acquiring of the Waterloo waterworks system.

The late Mr. Bean was a director of the Dominion Life Assurance Co. for many years, and was a life-long and useful member of the Methodist church.

Although active in many spheres, he was of a quiet and unassuming disposition, preferring that others receive the praise rather than himself for any successes that were achieved. During the last eight or ten years he has been a semi invalid. Up to the last, however, he retained his full mental powers and continued to evince a keen interest in the welfare of the enterprises he had initiated in the days of health and strength, and in the affairs of his town and country.

In the death of Mr. Bean Waterloo and Kitchener, as well as Waterloo county, have lost a valuable citizen whose life was crowded with useful and unselfish activity on behalf of his fellows.

Born on December 29, 1850 on the Biehn (Bean) family farm in Haysville, Wilmot Township, David Bean became a teacher. Upon receiving his teacher's certificate when he was around 15 years old, he taught in the school at Blenheim as well as schools in Baden and Washington. In 1868 he began teaching at the Elmira Public and Continuation School and was promoted to the position of principal in 1876, a position he held until 1888. Along with partner N. C. Dipel, Bean entered the newspaper business with the purchase The Waterloo Chronicle and Family Newspaper in 1888 and moved to Waterloo. The following year he became sole owner of the newspaper. In 1899 he and his son D. Alex purchased the Daily Telegraph and continued to publish both newspapers. Bean was the first chairman of the Waterloo Water Commission established in 1899 and was a member of the Waterloo Board of Trade and a director of the Dominion Life Assurance Company. A member of the Waterloo Methodist Church (now First United), Bean served as a long-standing trustee, the superintendent of the Sunday School and for many years was also the church's choir master. Bean served one year on town council in 1899 prior to being elected mayor the following two years. Queen Victoria's death in 1901 saw Bean's council approve a proposal to construct a memorial gate for the entrance to the municipal park. That year also saw council addressing the issue of the care of smallpox patients. In 1902 Bean was successful in securing a grant of $10,000 from Andrew Carnegie for the construction of a Free Library Building. Also that year, council investigated establishing a militia company in Waterloo and the town held its largest Saengerfest (singing festival). In 1920 the idea of bringing electric power to the town from Niagara Falls was championed by the Waterloo Board of Trade.From the city of Waterloo's website 2005

Historic Building:
The Bean-Wright House stands on land which constitutes a portion of the Christian Kumpf and Benjamin Devitt Surveys. Theodore Bellinger acquired a large lot assembled from parcels owned by Simon Snider, Joseph E. Seagram and Christian Kumpf.

Bellinger, a merchant and Town Councillor, built this impressive Victorian home with many Italianate characteristics in 1882. His widow sold the house in 1900 to David Bean, who was owner of the Waterloo Chronicle, a Town Councillor and Mayor of Waterloo from 1901 to 1903.

The home's outstanding features include the frieze board and brackets under the wide eaves and the arched windows in the attic of the projecting bay on the north elevation. The bay window on that facade has a variety of very delicate mouldings. A double front door is highlighted by an arched course of brick and cast key stone as well as a four-paned transom.

This example of the Italianate influence on late Victorian architecture was designated as a Heritage Landmark on the basis of its historic and architectural value and interest.<sup>1a

Isaac Bean - by Record Correspondent

Southwest Wilmot, Dec. 18 - A pioneer of Southwest Wilmot, Isaac Bean, died at the home of his son Robert here this morning in his 83rd year. The deceased, a son of the late John and Ann Bean, was born on the Bean homestead where he has resided all his life. Early this fall he went to the home of his son Robert, where he planned to stay for the winter. His wife predeceased him in February.

Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Mervin Facey of Blandford township, four sons, Howard of Toronto, Alfred, Robert and Fred, all of Southwest Wilmot, and ten grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held from the home of Robert Bean on Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Services at the home will be private with a public service at Bethel United church. Burial will take place in the adjoining cemetery.

Menno Bowman, "the second son of Samuel W. Baumann, was born in Waterloo, May 20th, 1837. Early in spring of 1858 he was married to Susan, daughter of Jacob and Magdalena (Baumann) Schneider. She was born December 2nd, 1838. After their marriage he purchased the old Jacob Schneider homestead at Bloomingdale, where he resided until 1878, when he rented his farm to Mr. Franklin Brubacher. In 1875 he entered the ministry of the New Mennonite church, being ordained in the year 1879. As a minister of the Gospel he was successful in winning many souls to Christ. He had charge of the following circuits in succession: Bethel, Twenty, Markham, and Maryborough, on which circuits he did good work, not withstanding the enemies he would have on account of his radical preaching and dealing with the people. He was very outspoken and dealt straight with his people without respect to person, and on account of this some were not always pleased with him. His sermons as a rule were powerful and stirring and consequently would deal very plainly with such who would settle down into a mere form of religion. It is only justice, however, to Mr. Bowman to say that wherever people would get into a good christian experience they would get along well with him. At the annual conference of Canada in 1886, he was appointed Presiding Elder, which position he has held ever since in a very successful manner. His district for the first years of his Presiding Eldership was the entire Canada Conference, including a few appointments in Michigan. In 1891 the conference was divided into two districts, from which time he travelled and spent much time in the state of Michigan. At present they reside on their farm again where his two sons, Emerson and Lloyd, are managing and working the same. Their family consisted of eleven children"

Allan owned the Blair Carlisle Flour Mill from 1881 to 1884 and is credited by some to have built the Sheaves Tower to provide additional power to the mill. He also served as a Dominion Excise Office in Galt.

Mrs. Jonathan Bowman

Sixty years of marital happiness was severed by the death Tuesday of Mrs. Jonathan Bowman, 34 Brubacher street, Kitchener, in her 82nd year. It was on June 3rd last that Mrs. Bowman celebrated the diamond anniversary of her marriage to Mr. Bowman at Preston. The celebration was a quiet one although both were in fairly good health. Passing of Mrs. Bowman will be widely mourned throughout the district as the couple moved about the considerably prior to settling here 40 years ago. Following their marriage the couple took up residence in Hamilton and lived successively at Blair, Tavistock, Blair, New Hamburg, Salem, near Elora and finally Kitchener. Deceased was born in Waterloo district, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Bowman. She was not related to her husband, who survives. Also surviving are two brothers, Samuel Bowman, St. Paul, Minn., Noah in Winnipeg, Man., and one sister, Mrs. Henry A. Brubacher, Kitchener.

"Mrs. Louisa Brubacher, 88,of RR3 Kitchener, died yesterday at her residence, the result of a stroke suffered five weeks ago. Born Feb. 25, 1859 in Waterloo Tp., she was a d/o the late Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Bowman. She was a member of the Alma St.United Brethren Church. Her husband, Henry A. Brubacher, whom she married 63 years ago in Bloomingdale, survives. Deceased was the last surviving member of the Samuel Bowman family.

Also surviving are four sons, Lyman of Minneapolis; Homer B. of Waterloo;Wilbur of Kitchener; and Sheldon of Toronto. One son, Morgan, predeceased her. Twelve grandchildren and three great-grandchildren also survive...."

Mrs. Magdalena Knarr

NEW DUNDEE: Two weeks from the day that she fell down the cellar steps at her home in this village and suffered a fractured hip. Mrs. Magdalena Knarr widow of the late Martin Knarr, passed away at St. Mary's Hospital, Kitchener, Friday, Jan. 5, in her 8lst year. A life-long resident of this district the deceased was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Cassel and was born on Aug. 1, 1859. Following her marriage to Martin Knarr they farmed in Blenheim township for many years and retired to the village 24 years ago where her husband died in 192S. Surviving are: one son, Ephriam of New Dundee; one brother, Henry Cassel of Goshen, Ind., four grandchildren and six great grandchildren. The late Mrs. Knarr was a member of the Detweiler Mennonite Church at Roseville at which place the funeral was held on Tuesday afternoon following a service at the family residence at 2 o'clock. Interment was made in the adjoining cemetery.

Born in Elmira, the d/o Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Cassel, she was married in 1888 to Henry Waterman. After her marriage she took up residence in Indiana. The couple returned to New Dundee 26 years ago, and have lived in this neighborhood ever since. The late Mrs. Waterman was a prominent member of the local Mennonite Brethren church, and took an active part in all the activities of the congregation as long as he rhealth permitted. Surviving are her husband; two sisters, Mrs. Lena Knarr of New Dundee and Mrs. Hugh Grieves of Ionia, Mich.; two brothers, Henry Cassel, Goshen, Indiana and David, Detroit; three daughters, Cleo, Mrs.Albert Egerdie, New Dundee; Hattie, Kitchener and Idella at home; one son, Clifford, New Dundee; and six grandchildren. One daughter, Bessie, predeceased her four years ago....."

Cassel - Ephraim B. Cassel died after a short illness, Nov. 1, 1946, in his ninetieth year. His entire life was spent in the New Hamburg, Ont., community, except for the past few years when he resided at the Braeside Home, Hespeler, Ont. He was a member of the Biehn congregation, New Hamburg and had served as one of the first Sunday-school superintendents at that place. His wife predeceased him by four months. One son (Allen, Toronto, Ont.) survives. Funeral services were held at the church, Nov. 4, in charge of Manasseh Hallman, Moses H. Roth, and C. C. Cressman. Interment was made in the church cemetery.

N. Hamburg Couple Married 60 Years

On Saturday, April 5th, Mr. and Mrs. Ephraim B. Cassel, esteemed residents of New Hamburg for the past twenty years, observed the 60th anniversary of their marriage.

They were married at Roseville, Waterloo County, on April 5, 1881. Rev. Jacob B. Bowinan, U. B. minister from Freeport, officiated.
Mr. Cassel is a son of the late Henry B. Cassel, who was born near Philadelphia, and came to Ontario in 1850 and made his home near New Dundee.

Later he taught school for some time at what was then called Block's Corners, about two miles southwest of New Dundee, and about 4 mile east of Blenheim Church. In this same log school house the Mennonite people held their church services for a number of years, until they built their own church in the year 1850.

Mr. E. B. Cassel's mother was born in Blenheim township, about about two miles south of New Dundee and Mrs. E. B. Cassel's father was born at Roseville.

Her mother was born in the state of Pennsylvania and came to Waterloo County over 150 years ago. Mr. Cassel was born in Blenheim, Oxford County, two miles north of Washington on the farm now owned by Mr. Coleman and formerly by A. Y. Hall, drover. Mrs. Cassel (Hannah), who was the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Bricker, was born at Roseville, where the marriage took place.

Mr. and Mrs. Cassel farmed for many years three miles west of Haysville, and in 1918 moved to New Hamburg.

They have one son, Allan.

Left Europe Over 200 Years Ago

The Cassel's and Bricker's, with many other Mennonite families, left Europe over 200 years ago for America and arrived at Philadelphia (The Quaker City) to make their homes in the state of Pennsylvania.

In religion, both Mr. and Mrs. Cassel are devout adherents of the Mennonite Faith, being members of the Biehn congregation, three miles south of New Hamburg.

Mrs. Cassel is in her 82nd year and this winter knitted several pairs of stockings, and cut out and made by hand the dress she wore for the occasion celebrated on Saturday. Mrs. Cassel does her own house work. She is more than grateful to the many friends and neighbours who have these many years not forgotten her in both calls and favors. Mr. Cassel will be 84 years old this spring, and remembers quite well the building that many years ago stood on the north side of the road, one quarter of a mile east of Haysville, which was used for a school house and which no doubt was the first or among the first in Wilmot township.

Mr. Cassel started to school in the spring of 1862 at U.S.S. No. 5, Wilmot, situated on the farm he lived on for 37 years. The school yard was then one quarter of an acre in size and seemingly answered for four purposes, namely school, church, burial and playground for the school children. The property was set aside in about 1850. About 1854 the Church of England was built just across the road.

SAMUEL CASSEL was born on a farm two miles northeast of Washington in the Township of Blenheim in the year 1858. In the year 1861 his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry B. Cassel, moved to a farm on the Huron Road in the Township of Wilmot, three miles west of Haysville. Here Mr. Cassel spent his boyhood days. After securing an education at S.S. No. 5, where he distinguished himself as a brilliant scholar, he embarked in business for himself. He purchased the homestead in 1885. Three years ago he bought the west half of Lot 27, known as "Spruce Farm", adjoining his own property, from Mr. Manley Mark, thereby securing one of the finest 200 acre farms in the county. Mr. Cassel was married to Miss Mark, eldest daughter of the late Samuel Mark, in the year 1885. Mr. Cassel has won an enviable reputation as a feeder of export cattle. Visitors from all sections visit his large barns to admire the beautiful cattle that are to be found in his stables. He feeds 70 exporters every year. He has been school trustee for three terms, besides being continuous secretary-treasurer of his school section for several years. He was a member of the school board when the present schoolhouse was built and was largely instrumental in making it one of the finest schoolhouses in the county. He is a member of the Church of England and takes an active interest in its welfare. In 1902 he was elected township councillor and has since been a very creditable member. He was appointed a justice of the peace in 1903 and reappointed by the present government in 1905.

Samuel Cassel Dies At Age 91

Samuel B Cassel, 91, of Kitchener, former colorful county clerk and treasurer, died at his home Sunday following a week's illness

Widely known among Ontario municipal officials, the veteran county administrator had been in retirement for about seven years. He had served the county as clerk and treasurer for more than 26 years when he resigned in 1942.

Born in Blenheim township Sept 25. 1858, he moved with his parents, the late Henry B Cassel a and Mary Ann Bricker Cassel, to Wimot township in 1861 where he spent his boyhood and received his early education.

Mr Cassel was made justice of the peace in 1903, holding this office up to the time of his death. He became deputy reeve in 1907 and was elected reeve in 1910. Three years later he was elected county warden.

Colorful Politician

He retired from council in 1915 and became clerk and treasurer of Wilmot township. In July, 1916, he was appointed clerk and treasurer of the county, selected from a large field of applicants.

He was a member of St. John's Anglican Church.

Surviving are his wife, one son and one daughter. He was predeeased by his daughter Edith (Mrs George Ewen), Toronto, in 1941 Two grandsons, Donald and Kenneth Ewen, Toronto, also survive.

The funeral was held Wednesday at the Schreiter Sandrock Funeral Home. Interment took place at St. James' Cemetery. Wilmot township.

Cassel.-Susannah, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry B. Cassel, was born in Waterloo Co., Ont., March 3, 1860: died March 13 1937, at the home of her daughter in Waterloo. She was in her 78th year. On March 6, 1883, she was united in matrimony to the late Noah S. Shantz, also of Wilmot, who predeceased her 10 months ago. Two daughters (Mrs. Tobias Shantz of Waterloo and Mrs. Marian Steiner of Lima, Ohio) and 3 sons (Lincoln C. of Kitchener, Walter C. of Wilmot, and Dr. Stauffer C. of Kitchener), 10 grandchildren and 2 brothers (Samuel of Kitchener, and Ephraim of New Hamburg) survive. She accepted Christ as her personal Savior and united with the Mennonite church a few years after her marriage and has been a consistent member of Blenheim congregation ever since. Her constant testimony was to serve her Lord and she had a longing desire to depart and be with her Master, especially since the passing of her late husband. Her desire has been granted and though her lips may be silent and her hands cease to minister, yet her labors will still go on for "she being dead yet speaketh." "Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth; Yea saith the Spirit that they may rest from their labours and their works do follow them." Funeral services were held on March 16 with Bro. J. B. Martin at the home and at the Blenheim Mennonite Church with M. H. Shantz in charge. Text, Job 14 : 14, 15. Burial in adjoining cemetery.

Golden Wedding Celebrated

On Monday, March 6th, Mr. and Mrs. Noah Shantz, of Baden, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at their old homestead near New Dundee, where their son, Mr. Walter Shantz, now resides. The bridesmaid and best man of fifty years ago were present for the occasion, namely, Mrs. Ezra Cressman, of Plattsville, and Mr. Samuel Cassel, of Kitchener. A sumptuous dinner was served from a table prettily arranged with gold tapers and centered with the wedding cake decorated in gold and white. A unique feature of the dinner was that the set of dishes used had been brought to this country from Pennsylvania by Mrs. Shantz's grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Bricker, almost 100 years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Shantz received lovely gifts and congratulations from their many friends. During the afternoon a program was given consisting of songs of yester-year and short addresses. Mr. and Mrs. Shantz's children and grandchildren were all present.

"Many Ontario Mennonite women were known for their hospitality, but few Indians were found among their recipients. What Susannah Shantz may have done to merit the gift which she received from two Indian women has been lost to memory - only the memory of the gift remains.

'FOR YOUR LITTLE PAPOOSE'

Susanna Bricker Cassel was born in Wilmot Township, Waterloo County. Her home was on the Huron Road, west of Haysville. Her father, Henry B.Cassel, her grandfather, Peter Bricker, and her great grandfather Sam Bricker had pioneered their respective farms in the Waterloo District.

When Susannah married Noah S. Shantz they took up residence on a farm south of the Huron Road, two miles east of Haysville, and became active members of the Blenheim Mennonite church. (This church has since merged with the Biehn congregation to form the Nith Valley Mennonite Church).The Shantz home was known for its warm hospitality to strangers as well as friends. Immigrant labourers from Europe found both employment and a home with Noah and Susannah.

On the Shantz farm there remained a heavy stand of hardwood and pine forest. Each year several Indian families came and camped in an old lumber shack on the edge of the forest while they harvested ginseng, the root of which was used for medicinal purposes.

One day, several months after the birth of her oldest child, Susannah responded to a knock on her kitchen door and found two Indian women standing there. The one had a small child with her. The older woman held a beautiful, hand-woven doll cradle fashioned from black ash which she shyly handed to Susannah, saying 'for your little papoose'.

This doll cradle and this intriguing tale of a Mennonite woman's interaction with native Indians was handed down to Susannah's daughters and grand daughters. Unfortunately the cradle has not been seen since the family moved from the old homestead, but the memory remains.

When this story was recounted to someone who was acquainted with the ways of Indian people, he responded that Indians presented gifts to persons whom they hold in high regard. Since that conversation the grand daughters have wondered about previous contacts their grandmother may have had with these two Indian women. Her hospitality, no doubt, had also been extended to them, prompting this generous gift."

"(Preston) - Illness of two days culminated in the death here yesterday afternoon of Oliver D.Cassel, 76, a resident here over a period of 50 years. Mr. Cassel was born in New Dundee and lived there and at Chicopee before coming to Preston. The deceased was employed at the Pattinson Woollen Mill for 45years but had lived retired for the past two years. He was a member ofthe Brethren in Christ (Tunker) church.

Surviving are four sons, James Lloyd Cassel of Hamilton, Harvey at home, Percy in Gormlay, Ont., and Kenneth of Galt, five daughters, Mrs. Harvey Snider of Kitchener, Mrs. David Cober of Kossuth, Miss Laura Cassel ofStevensville, Miss Ida and Miss Annie Cassel at home, and one sister, Mrs. Henry Wagner of Kitchener. Before the turn of the century, John and Jacob Cassel born in 1871, twin sons of Mr. and Mrs. Adam B. Cassel of Blenheim township, Oxford County, gained considerable fame as tightrope and trapeze artists, and balloonists. They ascended to approximately 500 feet landing by parachute and gave many performances throughout Waterloo County.

The accomplished athletic brothers spent some time travelling with circuses in the USA and Jacob worked with a medicine show as a magician and sharpshooter.

John, the only one of the pair to marry, later lived in South Carolina. In his early forties he was injured in a fall which resulted in his death in 1910. Jacob was also hurt in a fall, from which he only partially recovered, passing away from of a heart attack at his mother's home.

John Cassel had a horrible death. On Aug. 18, 1910, in Mount Vernon, Ind., his balloon caught fire 1,000 feet (300 metres) in the air. John jumped and his parachute opened after a brief free fall. Floating downwards, he was little aware that the flaming balloon was plummeting toward him. At about 120 metres (400 feet), it struck, burning the parachute, and plunging John to his death. Then, as he hit the ground, the blazing balloon landed on him.

John is buried in an unmarked grave in Louisville.

Before the turn of the century, John and Jacob Cassel born in 1871, twin sons of Mr. and Mrs. Adam B. Cassel of Blenheim township, Oxford County, gained considerable fame as tightrope and trapeze artists, and balloonists. They ascended to approximately 500 feet landing by parachute and gave many performances throughout Waterloo County.

The accomplished athletic brothers spent some time travelling with circuses in the USA and Jacob worked with a medicine show as a magician and sharpshooter.

John, the only one of the pair to marry, later lived in South Carolina. In his early forties he was injured in a fall which resulted in his death in 1910. Jacob was also hurt in a fall, from which he only partially recovered, passing away from of a heart attack at his mother's home.

Died At Louisville, Kentucky, U. S. A. on April 14th, 1909, at 12.15 o'clock, p. m, Jacob Cassel, aged 37 years, 7 months, 11 days.

The Funeral Will take place on Tuesday afternoon, 20th inst. at 2 o'clock, from his mother's residence, New Dundee, Ont., to the U. B. Church for services, thence to the Blenheim Cemetery for interment. Friends and acquaintances will please accept this intimation.

New Dundee

Obituary. -About the 6th inst., Mr. John Schwartz, of this place, was taking a steam engine to a farmer's place, where he intended to chop grain. While he attempted to cross a field he had to cross a snow bank and while driving through the bank the machine fell upon Mr. Schwartz, hitting him above the knee. The injured man was kept pinned to the ground for some time before it was possible to release him; when got out from under the machine it was found that the bone in his thigh was broken. He was taken home and the leg put in position by Dr. Ratz. It seemed as though the patient was doing well, until on Friday evening last, the 21st inst., when all at once he felt as though he fainted, and in less than 30 minutes he was a corpse, the end having been entirely un-expected. The funeral took place on Monday, the 24th inst., when the Rev. Messrs. Gruetzner and Eby preached to a very large concourse. He leaves a widow, two boys and one girl to mourn his untimely death. He was an industrious man, good husband and kind father, and of a peaceful disposition. This is another lesson that shows how uncertain life is, and how necessary it is to make preparations for that solemn occasion.

Underwood, formerly Leovina Saltzberry, passed away at her home 65 Glasgow street Sunday morning. Deceased was born at New Dundee, Nov. 7, 1855 and was in her 69^th year. She is survived by her husband, one daughter, Ina (Mrs. Sahli) at home, and six sons, Obal of Sandwich, Ira, Oscar, Milo and Lloyd all of this city, and Harry of Waterloo. There are also 24 grandchildren and two great grandchildren, and two sisters, Mrs. W. P. Ellis of this city and Mrs. George Miller of Haysville. The funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock from the residence to Calvary Memorial church. Burial will take place in Woodland cemetery (sic).

Haysville

Death claimed another of our well respected citizens of Haysville on Monday, December 22nd, in the person of Mrs. G. A. Miller after an illness of about 6 weeks. In fact she hadn't been well all summer but had to give up a few weeks ago. She bore her sickness very patiently and was a woman that was well liked and respected by everyone. The deceased was in her 69th year and leaves to mourn her loss besides her sorrowing husband, five daughter and two sons, namely, Mrs. Eldon Gehman, of Detroit, Mich., Mrs. Theo. Fetter, of Kitchener, Mrs. Harvey Brunk, of New Dundee, Mrs. Wm. Love, of near Plattsville, and William, Harry and Iva at home. The funeral was held on Wednesday afternoon from her late residence to the Haysville church thence to Riverside Cemetery where interment took place. The officiating clergymen were Rev. M. Shantz for the home and Rev. J. H. Pogson assisted by Rev. E. L. Vivion, of Woodstock, at the church.

"There is a Grant Bean located in 1900 in Huron county, Windsor Tp., Which is probably Ulysses Grant Bean. If so, he was born in Aug, 1867 in Canada. His father was born in Canada and his mother was born in Germany. He was 32. He emigrated to the US in 1878, which would be one year before David Bean's reported death in 1879, and had been in the US for 22 years. Grant would have been age 10. He was a farmer. His wife, Emma, was born in June 1874 in Michigan, although her parents were both born in Germany. She was 25. the couple had been married for 6 years (circa 1894) and had produced 2 children, two surviving (Madeline, age 5 and Edith, age 3). 1900 Michigan Census, Huron County,Windsor Tp., E.D. 27, Sheet 17. They were still in this area in 1920, where Grant Bean was farming at the age of 42. On this census he reported that they had been married, both for the first time, for 14 years, which would then be 1896 and one year after Madeline Bean's birth. Emma was 36.She had produced three children, two surviving: Madeline, now age 14, and Roland, age 4. Edith was missing. BEAN, U. GRANT. His father was David Bean, who was born Nov. 12, 1830, in Wilmot Township,Waterloo County, Ontario, Canada, and his mother was Anna Martha Truemner and born July 28, 1837, in Gilseberg, Tryso County, Kurhessen, Germany. The subject of this sketch was born in Huron County, Canada, June 20, 1868. They came to Michigan in 1878. Married Emma Dietzel . Her father was Traugott Dietzel, who was born in Saxenweimer, Germany, Nov. 22, 1834, and her mother was Ernestina Blacksmith, born in Welshendorf, Germany, Aug. 27, 1844. Children are: Martha Madeline, born April 6, 1893, and Edith Helen, born March 31, 1896. Mr. Bean's father died when he was 11 years old and he with his mother and five brothers moved to Winsor Township when it was nothing but a wilderness of green swampy land. After years of toil and hardship, such as early settlers only know, he has succeeded in clearing and paying for one of the best 80-acre farms in Winsor Township. Mr. Bean has five sisters and three brothers living and one brother who is dead.
