ROSENBERGER - On the 10th of April, 1893, in Preston, Waterloo Co., Ontario, Bro. Joseph Rosenberger, aged 68 years, 3 months and 16 days. Bro. Rosenberger had been suffering of dropsy for some time. He had spent nearly all his life in self-righteousness, yet during his sickness and the many severe spells, he experienced his lost condition and repented of his sins, and five days previous to his death he united with the church by baptism, from that time on he had peace and joyfully awaited death to make an end to his suffering. He remained conscious till the very last. He left a bright hope for the future. He was buried on the 13th in Hagey's graveyard. Funeral services by _____ Pomeroy and Jacob B. Bock - Sister Rachel Bock (nee Rosenberger) was born June 16, 1828, and died at Dundee, Ont., Dec. 29, 1908, aged 80 y. 6 m. 13 d. Her husband, the late Levi Bock, preceded her to the sprit world over 28 years ago. She was the mother of twelve children, of whom seven, three sons and four daughters, survive. Although she was partly helpless during the last five or six years of her life, owing to partial paralysis of her lower limbs, yet she seemed to be contented and happy in her trust in the Lord, and she fell gently asleep, to awake, as we hope, in His likeness. The interment took place in the Blenheim Mennonite Cemetery, on which occasion Pre. Peifer preached in German from John 17: 24, and Bro. N. Stauffer in English from Psa. 16: 11, to a well filled house

Rosenberger. - In Wilmot Twp., Waterloo Co., Ont., on March 16, 1906, of pneumonia, Bro. Benjamin S. Rosenberger. He was born July 1, 1838, and was thus aged 67 y., 8 m., 15 d. His wife preceded him about eight years. He leaves a family of five sons and five daughters to mourn their loss. He was buried in the Blenheim Mennonite cemetery on the 19th. Funeral services were conducted by Bro. N. Stauffer in English, from Rom. 14:7,8, and Bro. S. Gehman in German from Rom. 8:17, before a large audience.

George Rudy

An old inhabitant died on Sunday in Waterloo. Born in 1823 in this County, married in 1847 to Barbara Lichty, he devoted himself to agriculture until he moved to Waterloo in 1887. His only child, a daughter, died in the same year after a 19-year marriage to J. Kunkel. His widow, five grand-children and 6 great-grandchildren mourn his loss. Burial took place yesterday, Wednesday, at the Mennonite cemetery in Berlin.

Rebecca Rudy, widow of the late Samuel Shantz, died at her residence in Berlin on Wednesday June 7th, at the age of seventy-three years, and 9 months. The funeral took place from her late residence on Friday morning at 9 a.m. to the old Mennonite church at Berlin and was attended by a large concourse of mourning friends and relatives.

SUDDEN DEATH\emdash It is with feelings of sorrow that we have this week to record the death of Mr. Benjamin Rudy, a highly respected farmer in this neighborhood, which sad event took place suddenly took place suddenly and unexpected at his home near here early on Wednesday morning of last week. Mr. Rudy had been in his usual health the day before, and that night went to bed with the intention of getting up very early next morning to continue his seeding operations. Towards four o'clock next morning his wife was awakened by his heavy irregular breathing, and striking a light she found him in a dying condition. She did all in her power to make him comfortable but he died in less than ten minutes after she was up.

Dear reader here is a case for reflection. A strong man yet in the prime of life apparently in the best of health, certainly in the best of spirits, plans out his work for the morrow, retires early, sleeps soundly until within half an hour before the time of rising when he is suddenly summoned before a higher tribunal, and a few broken and unintelligible sentences in answer to the anxious inquiries of his wife, a few convulsions in mortal agony and all is over and this in less than a quarter of an hour and before any of his children who sleep under the same roof could be called to his beside. SHANTZ - On the 15th of Jan., 1900, in Waterloo Co., Ont., of liver complaint, Sister Barbara (Rudy) Shantz, beloved wife of Menno E. Shantz, aged 57 years, 6 months and 28 days. She was born June 18th, 1842. She leaves behind a husband, six children and nine grandchildren. She has been a member of the Mennonite Church for many years. During her last illness she bore her afflictions with Christian patience and was waiting for the summons: "Come up higher." Although mother will be missed greatly at home, still the Lord will never leave us nor forsake us. Funeral services were held in the D. Eby M. H. by E.S. Hallman in English from Rev. 22: 14, and Jonas Snyder in German from Rev. 21: 7. The meeting house was probably never so crowded as upon this occasion.

On the 29th of July, 1891, at her uncles, B. Bock, on the Manitoulin Island, Nancy, wife of Chas. Spreeman, of New Dundee, Waterloo County, Ont., aged 46 years, 7 months and 22 days. She leaves a husband and eleven children to mourn. May the Lord console and comfort them. On the 27th June she started in company with her brother, Levi Bock, for Manitoulin Island, to visit her friends, and while on the Steamer between Wiarton and the Island, she was prostrated by a stroke of Paralysis, and had recovered a little and thought she would get well again and said that she was ready and willing to go or stay if it pleased the Lord to take her, that she was satisfied. Her whole trust was in the Lord. She improved in strength, but could not move her left arm nor left leg but her foot a little. She could rest well until the morning of the 27th of July, when she was taken with pains, and the Dr. said that her heart was affected, and that there was not much hope. She was a great sufferer for two days and nearly two nights. She could speak whenever the pains ceased a few minutes. Only a few minutes before she died she asked whether Jesus was with her and she looked up and said, Yes. The word "Jesus" seemed to cheer her. She died in great peace. Funeral services conducted by Mr. Johnston, Presbyterian Student, who delivered a very appropriate address. Text, Rev. 14: 13.

Mrs. Catharine Bechtel, widow of George Bechtel, died at the home of her son, Mervin Bechtel, Sunday afternoon at the age of 86 years. Mrs. Bechtel was born on the old Bock homestead, one mile west of the village, July 1, 1856, a d/o the late Mr. and Mrs. Levi Bock. She spent her entire life in this district and since the death of her husband in 1920 had resided with her son in New Dundee. Surviving are two sons, Gilbert of Seaforth and Mervin of New Dundee; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Barbara Buck of New Hamburg. .

Joseph Rosenberger, d. May 9, 1954, Galt (see his KW Record obit. of Mon. , May 10, 1954: "(Preston) - Joseph Rosenberger, 83, died at the S. Wloo. Mem. Hospital early Sunday. For the last 3 years he had lived at Preston Springs. Born in Preston, s/o the late John and Susannah Rosenberger, he lived here all his life. He was employed for 66 years at the George Pattinson Woollen Mill as a cloth finisher and retired in 1950. Mr. Rosenberg (sic) served St. Paul's United Church in many offices and was honored by the congregation and session in 1949 when he was presented with an illuminated scroll. An honorary member of the session, he was superintendent of the Sunday school for many years. He was also a member of the Canadian Order of Foresters for 54 years and was financial secretary for a number of years. Married in Preston in 1902, his wife Eleanor Howell died in 1918. A son, Carman Rosenberger, died in Odessa, Ont. in 1949. Surviving is a sister, Mrs. George Welz, Chappel, Neb. , and a brother, Jacob of Hamilton. A granddaughter also survives. . .

Preston News:

Two more cases of smallpox have been discovered in Preston. Mr. Bock, of Wilmot Township, uncle of Miss Rosenberger, who had been visiting at the home of John Rosenberger prior to the discovery of the Kate Rosenberger case, has developed the disease. He had left and gone to the home of Jacob Rosenberger, Queen Street, a brother of Miss Katie Rosenberger.

They were quarantined and the case appeared on Saturday. Mr. Bock was taken to John Rosenberger's house, where the first case is. This morning we were informed that Miss Rosenberger's father, John Rosenberger, had become a victim of the disease.

In connection with these cases of the disease, a strange thing occurred on Saturday afternoon, when Mr. John Rosenberger's son, Joseph, who resides near the hop yards, and who has been quarantined for some time, developed a sort of dementic, and got away from the house. Not returning in the evening, his wife became concerned and revealed her fears to some friends. The fire alarm was rung and a search was instituted, which lasted til midnight. Just as the friends were about despairing of finding the missing man, he was discovered sitting down at the edge of the river, apparently unconscious of the bitter cold. When found, his hands and feet were frozen. He is, however, quite well today.

In April, 1905, he and his family moved on a homestead southwest of Guernsey where they resided most of the time. Six years ago he moved to Watrous, Sask. Mrs. Rosenberger predeceased him six years ago. He was a member of the Church of God. Funeral services were held at the Sharon Mennonite Church by M. H. Schmitt and --Ewart of Saskatoon. Abram Rosenberger, 81, died early today at his home, 57 Cameron street north. Deceased, who was born in Wilmot Tp. on Jan. 11, 1859, was a s/o the late Mr. and Mrs. Christian Rosenberger. For many years he farmed near New Dundee, retiring to Kitchener 26 years ago. Mr. Rosenberger was a faithful member of Bethany Mennonite church. Surviving are three daughters, Miss Elma Rosenberger, missionary in Korea, Japan, Mrs. C. D. Fiserof, Painesville, Ohio, and Mrs. Clayton Scheifele of Conestogo, three sisters, Mrs. H. S. Mrs. Marie Hallman, widow of Henry Hallman, died at her home, 54 West Avenue, today after an 18-month illness. She was 81. She was born New Dundee and was a member of the Pentecostal Tabernacle, Benton Street. Surviving are three sons, Abner of Oliver, B. C., Lorne of Edmonton, and Howard of Kitchener., and five daughters, Mrs. Harry Geach of Breslau, Mrs. H. Hutchings of Attica, Mich., Mrs. M. Clema of Pataskal, Ohio, and Mrs. Gordon Krupp and Mrs. Arthur Bently of Kitchener. Sixteen grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Theodore Reist of Didsbury, Alberta, and Mrs. Henry Pfohl of Beamsville, Ont. also survive. The remains will be held at the Hunter-Keffer Funeral Home until Monday at 2 o'clock when a private service will be held and thence to the Pentecostal Tabernacle for public service at 2: 30 p.m. Burial will be in East End Mennonite Cemetery.

A resident of Sunnyside, near Kitchener for the past 18 months, Noah S. Rosenberger, 62, died at his home Sunday morning following a brief illness. The deceased was a s/o the late Mr. and Mrs. Christian Rosenberger. As a young man, Mr. Rosenberger went to Michigan where he took up farming. He returned to this district in 1917.
Surviving are his wife, the former Anna R. Bowman, three daughters, Mrs. Oliver Eckstein of Plattsville, Ida, Mount Pleasant, Mich. , and Orpha at home, one son, Veron, at home, one brother, Abraham Rosenberger, Kitchener, four sisters, Mrs. H. S. Hallman, Kitchener, Mrs. James Coleman, Cremona, Alta. , Mrs. Thos. Reist, Didsbury, Alta. , and Mrs. Henry Pfohl, Kitchener, and 5 grandchildren. Coffman and united with the Blenheim Mennonite Church, to which faith she remained true till death. The past seven years she was unable to walk, but she bore her affliction patiently. She leaves 2 sisters (Mrs. John Coleman, New Hamburg; Mrs. Jacob L. Witmer, Brown City, Mich.), 5 brothers (Menno and Eli, New Dundee; Ben, New Hamburg; Osia, Balzac, Alta.; Edwin, Balzac, Alta.). Two sisters (Nancy and Sarah) predeceased her. Funeral services were conducted at the home on Oct. 1 by Bro. Moses N. Baer and at the church by Bro. Manasseh Hallman. Text, Acts 16: 14. Interment in adjoining cemetery.

Brown City. May 24 - Mrs. Leah Witmer, 82, widow of Jacob L. Witmer. died Tuesday in the Wilson Nursing Home here after a long illness.

She was born Nov. 2. 1867. in Ontario. and came to Michigan with her parents. Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Rosenberger. when a child. Mr. Witmer. to whom she was married Jan. 5. 1910. died in 1934.

Surviving are three brothers, Eli Rosenberger, New Dundee. Ont., Edwin and Oziah Rosenberger. both in the Canadian Northwest: a niece, Miss Priscilla Clemens. Brown City. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the United Missionary church, of which she was a member. Rev. H. E. Mattesen. pastor. will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Shantz.- Mrs. Joshua (Rosenberger) Shantz was born Dec. 10, 1865; died Dec. 29, 1943, at the Thorold Nursing Home, Thorold, Ont.; aged 78 y. 19 d. She was a daughter of the late Isaac and Elizabeth Rosenberger. She resided in Waterloo Co., Ont., until the death of her husband in 1941. Since that time she had made her home with her adopted daughter, Mrs. Melvin Cressman at Thorold. She had been ill for the past 7 weeks. In Nov., 1891, she became the bride of Joshua Shantz. To this union was born a daughter, Alberta, who died at the age of 2 years. In 1891 she united with the Mennonite Church to which faith she remained true until death. Surviving besides their adopted daughter are 6 grandchildren, 2 sisters (Mrs. Norman Shantz, Haysville; and Miss Elsie Rosenberger, New Dundee), 2 brothers (Isaiah, a minister, and Emery, both of New Dundee). The funeral was held the last day of the old year with a private service at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Omar Cressman near Dundee, Mrs. Cressman being her niece. This was followed by a public service at the Blenheim Mennonite Church. Funeral services were in charge of Bros. Manasseh Hallman and Moses N. Baer. Text, Ps. 17: 15. Burial in the Gieger Cemetery.

Rosenberger. --- Isaiah S., eldest son of the Isaac and Elizabeth (Shantz) Rosenberger, was born in Oxford Co., Ont., Aug. 15, 1867; died at his late home in Beamsville, Ont., Nov. 28, 1949; aged 82 y. 3 m. 13 d. Death followed a paralytic stroke, which he had suffered two weeks previously. On Sept. 29, 1891, he was united in marriage to Persida Shantz, who preceded him in death in May, 1938. Of the children born to this union, eight survive. On Aug. 19, 1945, he was united in marriage to Nancy (Cressman) Moyer, Beamsville, Ont., who survives. Also surviving are 2 sons (Chester, Nipawin, Sask.; David, Guernsey, Sask.), 5 daughters (Ada-Mrs. Hawse, Guernsey, Ont.; Clista, Kitchener, Ont.; Leona-Mrs. Leighton Schmidt, Petersburg, Ont.; and Alda, Chicago, Ill.), 19 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, one brother (Emery, New Dundee, Ont.), and 2 sisters (Mrs. Norman Shantz, Haysville, Ont.; and Elsie, New Dundee, Ont.). He was a member of the Blenheim congregation, near New Dundee, Ont., where he was ordained to the ministry as a helper of the late Joseph Nahgang, in 1897. He served as pastor of the congregation until 1908, when he moved to Guernsey, Sask. There he served until 1936, when he returned to Ontario. He renewed his fellowship with the Blenheim congregation, where he remained a member until death. His fellowship and service with the Vineland congregation was greatly appreciated during the time of his residence in Beamsville, Ont. Funeral services were conducted Dec. 1 at the last residence in Beamsville, and at the Blenheim Church by C. C. Cressman, Daniel Schlabach, and S. F. Coffman. Burial was made in the adjoining cemetery.

Rev. Isaiah S. Rosenberger, 82, died at his home here yesterday, following a brief illness. Born in Oxford County, he was a s/o the late Isaac Rosenberger and Elizabeth Shantz. He was a Mennonite minister for more than 50 years. Death summoned an esteemed resident of Preston on Monday morning in the person of Nancy Shantz, wife of Daniel Rudy in her 67th year. She had been ill only three weeks.

The deceased was born in Wilmot Township but resided in Preston for the past 26 years. She leaves her husband and five sons, besides one sister, Mrs. Abraham Honderich, of Bleam's Road, Wendall Shantz, of Mannheim, and Emory Shantz, of Kitchener. The funeral was held on Thursday afternoon to the Hagey Mennonite Church and Cemetery at Preston.

On Feb. 8, 1899, he was united in marriage to Priscilla Swartz, who survives. Also surviving are 3 sons (Lloyd, Breslau, Ont.; Ward, Kitchener, Ont.; Clayton, Baden, Ont.), 3 daughters (Leota - Mrs. Edwin Feick, Nine Pines, Ont.; Vinetta - Mrs. Vernon Witmer, Petersburg, Ont.; and Dorothy - Mrs. Lloyd Schmitt, New Dundee, Ont.), 21 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren. In 1904 he united with the Mennonite Church, of which he was a faithful member until death. He was interested in spiritual things, the fellowship and activities of the church, and made a contribution to the community in which he lived. Susannah (Shantz) Snyder was born Aug. 14, 1874. She united in holy matrimony with Urias Snyder of Waterloo, Ont., in 1898. This union was blest with one son. In 1904 she with her husband were converted and united with the Mennonite Church at Waterloo. She was of a quiet and unassuming disposition, and was always faithful to her Lord, till He called her home. Her departure was a shock to the community, as she was in ordinary health till the evening of Jan. 6, when she complained a little but not seriously, went to sleep, and next morning was found lifeless in bed, seemingly without a struggle. She died at her home near Waterloo, Jan. 7, in her 54th year; thus proving the frailty of man and the importance to be ready. She leaves her sorrowing husband, 1 son (Lorne) her aged father (Levi Shantz), 2 sisters, 2 brothers, and a host of friends. Funeral services were held at the Waterloo Church by Bro. Jonas Snider (Text, Amos 4: 12), assisted by Brethren Noah Hunsberger and Howard Stevanus. May the abiding Comforter be with the bereaved family.

Emery R. Shantz

Emery R. Shantz, 68, of 17 Major St., died last night at K-W Annex Hospital, after a lengthy illness. He had been employed by the City of Kitchener for the past 18 years. Son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Levi Shantz, the deceased was born at Phillipsburg, Oct. 20, 1881. He is survived by his widow, the former Catherine Frank. They were married Oct. 11, 1909, in Watarloo. Also surviving are one son, Ray Shantz of Stratford, and four daghters, Mrs. Lloyd (Agnes) Maier of Waterloo, Mrs. Clarence (Pearl) Koch of Waterloo, Mrs. Roy (Grace) Schmidt of Kitchener and Miss Helen Shantz of Kitchener. A daughter. Verda, died 18 years ago. There are also six grandchildren and one brother, Wendell Shantz of Kitchener. Funeral service will be held Thursday, at 3 p.m. at Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home, to Woodland Cemetery for interment. Rev. A. G. Jacobi, pastor of St. Mark's Lutheran Church will officiate. The body is resting at the funeral home.
