    DEATH OF A DUMFRIES PIONEER.

Mrs. George Moore Succumbs After A Lengthy Illness - Died at the Residence of Her Son Tuesday - A Long and Useful Life

Of late the grim reaper has been plying his ghastly calling with unremitting zeal in this district, particularly among the aged and Infirm. One of his latest victims is that venerable lady, Agnes Douglas, relict of the late Geo. Moore, of North Dumfries, her death occurring on Tuesday afternoon, at 3 o'clock. The deceased was one of those heroic women to whom, equally with their husbands, is due the credit of converting the wilderness which Canada was in the early days, to the progressive an prosperous country it now is. The story of her life is an interesting one. She was born in Bearhope, Roxboroughshire, Scotland, 82 years ago. In 1834, after the death of her father, she, with her mother and seven brothers and sisters, the other six children remaining in the land of their birth, came to Canada. While in quarantine at Grosse Isle, near Quebec, the cholera scourge swept the continent, and the mother died, apparently of that dread disease. On the journey to their destination, North Dumfries. yet another member of the family was called away, a daughter joining her mother in the great beyond. The late Mrs. Moore took up her residence in this township and soon after her arrival here was married to the late George Moore, who predeceased her by some years. At the time of her death the deceased was the last survivor of the family, the members of which made their homes in various parts of the world. After her husband's demise, she continued to reside on the homestead, living with her son, John D. Moore, M.P.P. Of the four sons, three survive her. They are: James D., St. Marys; John D., N. Dumfries and George, Waterloo. Some two years ago the deceased lady was obliged to take to her bed, but her general health appeared to be fully as good as when she was able to be about. She preserved her faculties in a wonderful manner and when death claimed her for his own, her intellect was as keen and her mind as active, as when in the prime of life. Until yesterday morning, she was seemingly as well as she had been for years, but a few hours after she had crossed the bourne. She was a member of the C.P. church and before the infirmities of age came upon her, took an active interest in all matters pertaining to the church. Of herself personally, much could be said, but as her goodness of heart,. kindliness of disposition and other, enduring attributes are known to all who know her, suffice it to say, she will greatly missed , as all who, like her, have done much for their fellow beings are. The funeral will take place from the residence of her son, Mr. John D. Moore, this afternoon at 3 o'clock, to the Cedar Creek Cemetery.

    Notes:

MRS. GEORGE MOORE, the mother of John D. Moore, ex-M.P.P., and now Registrar of the County of Waterloo, was a woman worth knowing, because of her sterling character and her true nobility of nature. And a visit with her was always a source of pleasure and profit. She was simple and unconventional in her habits, and void of all affectation and pretense. She worshipped reality and truth and loved real goodness. Her early training had been in the severe and stern school of the Calvinistic creed of her fathers and that had shaped her thoughts, and cut out channels for her feeling and moulded her nature. And all through her life it brought to her profound satisfaction. The Shorter Catechism was with her a textbook of which she never wearied and, like all who learn it early and have it engraven on the memory, it was ever at command to open up and explain some deep question in theology, or to solve some knotty problem in religious experience. Great was her satisfaction in the use of it. When she gave the "answer" to the questions, the "proofs" were not wanting.

For many years bodily hindered her from attendance on public worship, but her interest in the church and its minister and its members never failed. Being shut in, she gave herself to meditating upon the Word of God day and night, and had thought out to her own satisfaction many large questions of vast moment. And so her straightforward talk, her clear views of the teachings of God's Word, her deep and far-reaching thoughts of life and the life to come, her strong commonsense conceptions of things uttered in terse and telling sentences were very refreshing. It was like a cool invigorating breeze from the salt sea! One institution she greatly enjoyed was the prayer-meeting which had been kept up for over a quarter of a century in Cedar Creek by the members of five or six congregations in that district. It was held in the homes of the people, and when it came to her house it was always a delightful occasion for her. It brought with it spiritual fellowship and spiritual food. The prayers and the preaching were both helpful and inspiring. They ministered materially to her heart-life, increasing her faith, and calling forth her love, and brightening her hope. Often after an address or an exposition I have heard her say: "That suits me." "Aye, that is what is needed."

She was of a thankful spirit, suffering none of God's mercies to go unmarked. Her thought of this was much in keeping with that of Mr. John Livingstone, of Ancrum, 1650 : "Alas! for that capital crime of the Lord s people barrenness in praises. Oh, how fully I am persuaded that a line of praises is worth a leaf of prayer, and an hour of praises is worth a day of fasting and mourning!"

Before she was called home she was fully prepared by looking into the Hereafter, and listening to its voices, and longing for its rest, and the riches of its fellowship, and the rejoicing of its love. She was quietly and believingly awaiting the Lord's time. And when He came to receive her unto Himself, it was the answer of many a prayer and the fulfilment of many a promise on which she had firmly builded.

    Notes:

John Douglas Moore was born April 13th., 1843, on the farm near Galt in North Dumfries Township. He was the son of the late George Moore, a native of North Cumberland, England, and of Agnes Douglas, of Roxboroughshire, Scotland. He was educated in the old log school in the Dickie settlement, near Galt. His father, George Moore, purchased 200 acres from the Hon. William Dickson in 1833 at four dollars an acre.

Born and reared on the farm, the subject of this sketch in early life learned those demands and requirements which go to the making of a successful career.

His farming interests widened from two hundred acres which he assumed in 1878 to the Scott farm of 200 acres, to the Cunning ham farm of 150 acres and to the Wilson farm, making in all 700 acres, in which he was interested up to the time of his death. Besides farming the business of growing hops claimed his attention for about thirty years. His public career commenced in comparatively early life. In time he became member of the Township Council of North Dumfries and later was reeve and subsequently warden of the County, in 1878.

In politics Mr. Moore was a prominent Liberal and represented South Waterloo in the Provincial Legislature from 1891 to 1898, during the premiership of the late Sir Oliver Mowat. In 1901 he was appointed to the County Registrarship, which position he filled till his death.
Mr. Moore was a promoter and charter member of the Galt, Preston and Hespeler Railway, a director and shareholder of the Brantford Binder Twine Company, and president of the Robe and Clothing Company of Kitchener as well as a shareholder of the Brantford Roofing Company.

In religion, Mr. Moore was a Presbyterian, a former member of the Central Presbyterian Church, Galt, and later a member of St. Andrews Church, Kitchener.

The late Mr. .Moore was of a genial disposition, affable and friendly. His kindness and consideration of others won him many loyal friends.
Mr. Moore was married to Elizabeth Moffat of North Dumfries Township, who died in 1904. The union was blessed with one son and five daughters, who survive him.

    Notes:

    GEORGE MOORE.

George Moore is proprietor of the largest hop fields of the Dominion, having seventy acres planted to this crop. He is also engaged in the product business, with a cold storage at Galt. In the development of his business he has displayed principles and methods which are of interest to the commercial world and as the leader in the hop industry in Canada he well deserves mention in this volume. He was born July 26, 1845, in the township of Dumfries, Waterloo county, his parents being George and Agnes (Douglas) Moore, the former a native of England and the latter of Scotland. The father became an early settler of the township of Dumfries and was a farmer by occupation. His son and namesake was reared to farm labor and acquired a common school education, continuing his studies to the age of nineteen years, when he left school and concentrated his energies upon general agricultural pursuits. He has continued in farming to the present time, his attention being now largely given to the cultivation of the hop crop. In 1869 he removed to Waterloo, where he began the extensive growing of hops, operating seventy acres, these being the largest hop yards in the Dominion. In 1896 he extended his efforts to the produce business and is now engaged on a large scale in the shipment of eggs, owning a commodious cold storage at Galt. His business interests have thu been extended and are now of an important character president of the Berlin Robe & Clothing Company and for twenty-seven years he served as a director of the Waterloo Woollen Manufacturing Company. His firm at Waterloo also carries on a wholesale business in Montreal as dealers in general produce and as commission merchants, operating those interests in connection with the cold storage plant at Galt.

Mr. Moore's usefulness however, has not been limited by his business, for in many other ways he has contributed directly to the welfare, progress and upbuilding of the city. He was a member of the provincial agriculturial and arts board for nine years and acted as president of that board for one year for division No. 9. At the International Live Stock Exposition at Chicago in 1900 be received seven first prizes, also won the world's championship for the best six horse team heavy draft Clydesdales. His political allegiance it given to the Liberal party. For seven years he was a member of the county council and for two years he served as reeve of Waterloo, while for a similar period he was mayor of the dry. He likewise served office of warden of the county for two years and in 1904 he successfully contested the north riding of Waterloo for the local legislature as the representative of the Liberal party.

In 1875 was celebrated the marriage of Mr. Moore and Miss Mary Barrie. a daughter of the late Robert Barrie of Dumfries, and they have three children : Bella : Agnes Georgina : and Robert Barrie. who is encased in business with his father. Mr. Moore is a member of the Masonic fraternity, the Royal Arcanum and the Ancient Order of United Workmen and for many years he has been a member of the provincial curling board. For one year he served as its president He is intertested in all athletic and manly outdoor sports, recognizing their value in the normal development of the individual His religions faith is that of die Presbyterian Church, to which he is allied through membership relations. His life record is in many respects worth of emujlation. The story of the founders of the nation and of those who have been the real upholders and promoters of the country interesting not only from a historical standpoint, but also as a source of inspiration and encouragement to others, yet we need not look to the past ; the present furnishes many examples worthy to be followed in men who have risen through their own efforts to positions of prominence and importance in professional, political, mercantile and industrial circles. To this class belongs George Moore.

    ___________

    GEO. V. MOORE IS DEAD.

A Well Known Galtonian Passes Away. - Was Born in Waterloo,

Galt Reporter: - George V. Moore, died at the Galt Hospital on Tuesday evening and seldom has the passing out of a citizen been marked by more general and more profound regret. During his long illness, though reports were at many times unsatisfactory, it was hoped against that he would recover. It was hope not to be so however. He fought a long struggle with the inevitable and eventually succumbed.

Mr. Moore suffered during the past year from appendicitis and early this year was operated upon. The case proved extremely critical. On the Sunday morning following the operation he relapsed and the finger of death seemed almost upon him. But he fell into a sleep and it was afterwards thought that the worst had been passed, At times there were signs of improvement, but never was there any substantial promise of recovery. A lingering illness ended in death on Tuesday evening.

George Veitch Moore, was the only son of the late William Moore, one of the pioneer egg merchants in Western Ontario, and a nephew of John D. Moore, registrar of Berlin, George Moore, the well-known horseman of Waterloo, and the late James D. Moore of St. Marys, the founder of the J.D. Moore Co., of that town.

Mr. Moore was born in Waterloo, and came to Galt when a boy. He attended the common school here and the G.C.I. completing his education in Upper Canada College. He entered business life as a hardware merchant, He was married in June, 1898, to Josephine, second daughter of Dr. T. W. Vardon, who, with an infant daughter, his mother, Mrs. William Moore, and two sisters, Jean and Edith, is left to mourn his early demise.

The funeral will take place Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock from the residence of his mother, corner of Salisbury avenue and Crescent Place to Mount View Cemetery.
