    _______________

    THE LATE JOSIAH STAUFFER

The widespread expressions of regret occasioned by the passing of the late Josiah Stauffer and the unusually large number who gathered from all parts of the county to pay a final tribute of respect at the obsequies of the deceased, indicated the high degree in which he commanded the regard of the community.

Those who enjoyed the privilege of his acquaintance, and he had an especially large. circle of friends, came to recognize his sterling qualities of character and such was their confidence in his integrity and business ability that he was elected to positions of responsibility and honor in business and municipal life as well as in the political field.

For years the late Mr. Stauffer conducted a large and successful farm, also associating himself with other activities. When the position of manager of the North Waterloo. Farmers' Mutual Fire Insurance Company became vacant owing to the death of his father. In 1909 he succeeded to that office and during his occupancy of the position the company continued to grow and expand until to-day it is one of the leading Farmers Mutuals of the province. His high standing in the insurance. field was recently further evidenced in his election to the presidency of the Ontario Fire Underwriters' Association.

The late Mr. Stauffer was also prominently identified with the municipal affairs of the County, serving with characteristic efficiency and zeal. For nine years Mr. Stauffer was a member of the Waterloo Township Council, the last two years of which he filled the position of Reeve.

A staunch Liberal in polities he for many years actively associated himself with the Liberal party of the riding, being for a number of years the president of the North Waterloo Reform Association.

The late Mr. Stauffer had the happy faculty of making and retaining friends. He was not only broadminded in his views but genial and approachable and his passing at the comparatively early age of sixty-one years after a short illness was a matter of keen sorrow to his associates in the various organizations with which he was identified. In the family circle especially, where his kindliness and largeness of heart found frequent expression, will his loss be deeply mourned,

His splendid record of service to the community in which he was a leading figure and in the positions of trust which he filled with such acceptance will remain as an enduring monument to his endeavors and his name will be revered as one who exemplified most worthily the qualities of good citizenship.

    ______________

    Mrs. Mary Lackner

Friends and relatives in Waterloo. Kitchener and district learned with sincere regret of the passing of a former local resident in the person of Mrs. Mary Lackner, relict of the late Mr. Lackner, and daugh- ter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Levi Stauffer. She slept peacefully away at her home, 712 Irvin Street, Windsor, on Wednesday, Sept. 4th, following a lengthy illness. Following the death of her husband 23 years ago, near Hawkesville, where he conducted a farm, she moved to Waterloo where she resided until she moved to Windsor about ten years ago. Until her health failed her, she took an active interest in church work. She was beloved by all who had the privilege of her acquaintance.

Surviving are four sons and two daughters, Vernon and Graham, of Detroit, Reginald, of Windsor, Harvey of Toronto, Mary and Lorna of Windsor; also four sisters and one brother. Mrs. Lydian Shantz, Didsbury, Alta., Mrs. Chris- tena Graff, Milford, Iowa, Mrs. I. C. Hallman and Mrs. E. C. Hallman, R.R. 3, Waterloo, and Dr. L. L. Stauffer, Waterloo.

A simple and impressive funeral service was conducted Friday afternoon at Letter & Dreisinger's Funeral Home, by Rev. E. Val. Tilton, pastor of the First United Church at Waterloo. Tribute was paid to the fine Christian character of the deceased. Reference was made to her fine interest in church work and as a loving mother and wife. The remains were laid at rest in the family plot in Mount Hope cemetery. The pallbearers were Messrs. Dr. L. L. Stauffer, Harley C. Stauffer, Maurice Hallman, Wm. Mitchell, Ward Stauffer and Berton Shantz. The floral tributes sent by friends were beautiful and numerous.
