HEISTAND.-On the 17th of December, 1890, in Waterloo township, Waterloo Co., Ont., of paralysis, Sister Elizabeth Heistand, wife of Bro., George Heistand, aged 74 years, 7 months and 17 days. The dear Sister had been poorly for a number of years. About five weeks ago she had a slight attack of paralysis which made her helpless and on the evening of the 16 th she took her supper as usual and slept till 1 o'clock, when Brother Heistand spoke to her, but received no answer and at 3 o'clock her spirit took its flight. She was buried on the 19 th at the Eby church, Berlin, where a large assembly of relatives and friends met to sympathize with the dear Brother and family in their bereavement. The church militant has lost a consistent member, but we believe she has now joined the church Triumphant. The services were conducted by Moses Erb and the house and Samuel Bowman and Noah Stauffer at the church. From Eccl. 4: 14 and 2 Cor. 5: 1.

DEATH OF NOAH BEAN

Highly Respected and a Prosperous Farmer of Wilmot Twp. Funeral on Saturday Was Very Largely Attended

On Wednesday, May 13th, a highly respected resident of Wilmot Township passed away after a short illness in the person of Noah Bean. A little more than a year ago while out driving, he was thrown from his buggy sustaining severe injuries from which he never recovered fully. About two weeks ago complications set in which confined him to his house, terminating in his death from pernicious anaemia, at the age of 65 years, 1 month and 13 days. Deceased who was the third son of the late John Bean, was a successful and prosperous farmer. He was of a retiring disposition and never sought public honors, though he served very acceptably as public school trustee, for a number of terms, finding in farming on approved principles and the cultivation of fruit trees in which he took great interest, a sufficient scope for exercise of his activities. His farm, the south half of the old homestead, 2 miles south-west of Haysville, with its up-to-date buildings, is one of the finest in this part of the country. He was a zealous, consistent and faithiul member of the church of the Mennonite Brethren in Christ. in politics he was a strong Liberal. About thirty years ago he was united in marriage to Susannah Shantz, daughter of the late Joseph Y. Shantz, of the Huron Road. Six children were born of this marriage all of whom survive: Simon a Rosemount, Sask., Lizzie, of Vineland, Ont.; Bernice, Warren, Susie at home and Salome, teacher at New Dundee. The bereaved widow and children have sustained a severe and irreparable loss and have the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community. The funeral on Saturday, May 16th, was attended by an immense concourse of sorrowing relatives, friends and neighbors, who came to pay their last tribute of respect to the departed one. The services were conducted by the pastor of the Bethel church, Rev. Mr. Sievenpiper, of New Dundee. The remains were interred in the Stauffer cemetery near Haysville. Three brothers and one sister, also survive, George and Isaac, farmers near Haysville, David, editor of the Chronicle-Telegraph, Waterloo, and Elizabeth of Waterloo.

Death of George Bean

A well-known former resident of New Hamburg, Mr. Geo. Bean, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Selina Coxson, in Waterloo last Wednesday at the age of 86 years. He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Bean and was born in Wilmot Township. He farmed successfully in Wilmot for many years and then retired to New Hamburg. He resided here for several years until the death of, his wife in 1922. Since then he made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Coxson, in Waterloo. The deceased was a faithful member of the Methodist, later the United church and was greatly esteemed for his many good qualities. There are left to mourn him four son and six daughters, namely, Herbert, Saskatchewan, Percy, Brantford, Russel, North Carolina, Earl, Regina, Sask., Mrs. H. Merner, Chicago, Mrs. Elsie Vance, Woodstock, Mrs. W. E. Motherall, Hastings, Mrs. Selina Coxson, Waterloo, Mrs. J. G. Rabb, Windsor, and Mrs. M. Hunter, Onondaga, Ont., also 23 grandchildren and one brother, Isaac, of Haysville, survive. He was predeceased by his wife in 1922. The funeral was held from the Schreiter Funeral Home, Kitchener, at 2 o'clock, Saturday, and thence to the Riverside Cemetery, New Hamburg. Rev. F. Matheson was in charge.

David S. Bean, "the sixth son of John and Annie (Scheirich) Bean, was born about the year 1850. He, after passing his earlier years engaged in agricultural pursuits on his father's farm, obtained an education, and choosing the teaching profession in life, he successfully passed his examinations in 1867, and in January, 1868, he commenced teaching in our public schools. By his great energy and perseverance he became one of the most successful teachers in the county, and after having taught for twenty years he retired from the profession in December, 1888. In January, 1889, he purchased the "Waterloo Chronicle" and has since through his ability in journalism, made it one of the ablest and most influential weekly papers of the county, and one that exercises a powerful influence, not only in Waterloo County, but throughout all the adjoining counties. He is married to Mary Ann Fry and has a family of several children."

TRIBUTES OF RESPECT PAID BY CITIZENS

Funeral of Late David Bean Was Largely At tended on Sunday

IMPRESSIVE SERVICES

Former business associates and members of various civic bodies and organisations with which he had been identified together with a large gathering of relatives, assembled to honor the memory of the late David Bean, whose funeral was held from his late residence, George St. Waterloo, on Sunday afternoon.

Rev. W. H. Harvey, pastor of the Waterloo Methodist Church of which the late Mr. Bean had been an active and leading member for many years, was the officiating clergyman and in tributes to his character and works recalled his activity as a teacher in the schools of the county, his contributions to the progress of the community' while in responsible offices of trust, including the position of mayor and chairman of various civic bodies in Waterloo and also as an energetic worker in the church. Honorable, upright and alert to serve his fellows, his life. he said, was worthy of emulation, embodying as it did the attributes of the best citizenship. Although laid aside in his prime, he had accomplished much for his day and generation in the short span of fifty years of active life and was every sense a worthy, high-minded citizen, who commanded the general respect and regard of the community.

Members of the choir of the Waterloo Methodist Church and Zion Evangelical church were present and sang several of the favorite hymns of the late Mr. Bean.

The bearers were Thos. Hilliard, George Diebel, S. B. Bricker, M. S. Hallman, R. O. Dobbin and A. Werner of Elmira. Interment was made in Mount Hope Cemetery.

The beautiful floral tributes which surrounded the casket were sent by the following:

THE LATE DAVID BEAN.

After a life of great activity in the educa.. journalistic and municipal fields in Waterloo County, Mr. David Bean, of Waterloo, passed away peacefully on Tuesday It was fitting that, being a lover music, he should retire to rest on the night ...eding his demise to the strains of music, ... his last waking hours on earth happy ...fal.

A men and women in various ....will remember with warm ... intruction they received from at Blenheim, Baden, Washington during a teaching career ex... knowledge, enthusiasm for his work, interest in all phases of student life and firmness of discipline were among the factors contributing to an enviable record of success as a teacher.

In 1889 he retired from the teaching profession to enter the journalistic field, becoming the proprietor and editor of the Waterloo Chronicle.
Being well and favorably known throughout the county the newspaper quickly expanded under his direction until it became the most widely-read weekly newspaper in the county. Ten years later, in company with his son, D. Alex Bean, he purchased the Daily Telegraph, and
was actively engaged in the oversight of the two newspapers until he was afflicted with the malady that made it necessary for him to retire

As a citizen he took a keen interest in municipal affairs, and was a member of the Library Board for a number of years, after which he entered the Town Council as a Councillor, and then served as Mayor for three consecutive terms. During the time that he sat in the Council and Water Commission a number of important enterprises were undertaken, the most i portant being the acquiring of the Waterloo waterworks system.

The late Mr. Bean was a director of the Dominion Life Assurance Co. for many years, and was a life-long and useful member of the Methodist church.

Although active in many spheres, he was of a quiet and unassuming disposition, preferring that others receive the praise rather than himself for any successes that were achieved. During the last eight or ten years he has been a semi invalid. Up to the last, however, he retained his full mental powers and continued to evince a keen interest in the welfare of the enterprises he had initiated in the days of health and strength, and in the affairs of his town and country.

In the death of Mr. Bean Waterloo and Kitchener, as well as Waterloo county, have lost a valuable citizen whose life was crowded with useful and unselfish activity on behalf of his fellows.

Born on December 29, 1850 on the Biehn (Bean) family farm in Haysville, Wilmot Township, David Bean became a teacher. Upon receiving his teacher's certificate when he was around 15 years old, he taught in the school at Blenheim as well as schools in Baden and Washington. In 1868 he began teaching at the Elmira Public and Continuation School and was promoted to the position of principal in 1876, a position he held until 1888. Along with partner N. C. Dipel, Bean entered the newspaper business with the purchase The Waterloo Chronicle and Family Newspaper in 1888 and moved to Waterloo. The following year he became sole owner of the newspaper. In 1899 he and his son D. Alex purchased the Daily Telegraph and continued to publish both newspapers. Bean was the first chairman of the Waterloo Water Commission established in 1899 and was a member of the Waterloo Board of Trade and a director of the Dominion Life Assurance Company. A member of the Waterloo Methodist Church (now First United), Bean served as a long-standing trustee, the superintendent of the Sunday School and for many years was also the church's choir master. Bean served one year on town council in 1899 prior to being elected mayor the following two years. Queen Victoria's death in 1901 saw Bean's council approve a proposal to construct a memorial gate for the entrance to the municipal park. That year also saw council addressing the issue of the care of smallpox patients. In 1902 Bean was successful in securing a grant of $10,000 from Andrew Carnegie for the construction of a Free Library Building. Also that year, council investigated establishing a militia company in Waterloo and the town held its largest Saengerfest (singing festival). In 1920 the idea of bringing electric power to the town from Niagara Falls was championed by the Waterloo Board of Trade.From the city of Waterloo's website 2005

Historic Building:
The Bean-Wright House stands on land which constitutes a portion of the Christian Kumpf and Benjamin Devitt Surveys. Theodore Bellinger acquired a large lot assembled from parcels owned by Simon Snider, Joseph E. Seagram and Christian Kumpf.

Bellinger, a merchant and Town Councillor, built this impressive Victorian home with many Italianate characteristics in 1882. His widow sold the house in 1900 to David Bean, who was owner of the Waterloo Chronicle, a Town Councillor and Mayor of Waterloo from 1901 to 1903.

The home's outstanding features include the frieze board and brackets under the wide eaves and the arched windows in the attic of the projecting bay on the north elevation. The bay window on that facade has a variety of very delicate mouldings. A double front door is highlighted by an arched course of brick and cast key stone as well as a four-paned transom.

This example of the Italianate influence on late Victorian architecture was designated as a Heritage Landmark on the basis of its historic and architectural value and interest.<sup>1a

Isaac Bean - by Record Correspondent

Southwest Wilmot, Dec. 18 - A pioneer of Southwest Wilmot, Isaac Bean, died at the home of his son Robert here this morning in his 83rd year. The deceased, a son of the late John and Ann Bean, was born on the Bean homestead where he has resided all his life. Early this fall he went to the home of his son Robert, where he planned to stay for the winter. His wife predeceased him in February.

Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Mervin Facey of Blandford township, four sons, Howard of Toronto, Alfred, Robert and Fred, all of Southwest Wilmot, and ten grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held from the home of Robert Bean on Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Services at the home will be private with a public service at Bethel United church. Burial will take place in the adjoining cemetery.

SHANTZ - Jan. 12th, 1900, in Berlin, Waterloo Co., Ont., of consumption, John S. Shantz, aged 53 years, 1 month, 8 days. Buried at Cressman's M. H., Breslau, on the 14th. Many friends and acquaintances assembled. Deceased had never taken any interest in religion up to very nearly his end, when his position began to become serious and the light began to shine into his heart, and he saw the folly of his way and began to pray. As the end came he said he was not afraid to die. Services by H. Hallman and Ramer from Phil. 1: 21. He leaves a widow, one son and four daughters, the three eldest grown up.

June 24th, in Waterloo Co., Canada West, Jacob S, Son of John Y. Shantz, aged 17 yrs. 6 mo. and 20 days. His disease was consumption.
The following is a letter which he wrote to his sister, from which we can see, how God manifests his love towards us through the Spirit of Christ, if we humble ourselves as we ought and come to him in sincerity and with self-denial.

June 14th 1864.

Dear sister!
As the Lord has spared my life till this present hour, I will not delay any longer to send my greatest love to you my beloved sister.

And I will let you know that preacher Stolm has visited me one day and told me many good things about our great God, and he told me that I should now prepare to meet the Lord in peace; that he expected my days in this world would be short and my heart felt not sorry to hear it; for I hope if the Lord should end my life immediately, I could meet my God in peace; and I will pray earnestly to my God, for I don't know when the Lord will take me to that sweet happy home from whence I will never return any more. I often felt glad that I could soon go home to meet my two little brothers who have gone before me, but now the time is here when I shall go and meet them in that sweet happy home; and when I am once there I shall never wish to come back upon this earth any more. But I wish that all my brothers and sisters would try to follow me, for which I hope there is no doubt you will pray earnestly to that all saving God.
I feel tired and think it is time for me to come to a close. I send my best respects to you all.

Dear reader, Have you also, yet perceived that God is gracious, as this youth who could so rejoice in view of the end of this, his earthly life, which his disease thus pointed out to him. 0! bethink thyself for once and pray to God as David did: Lord so teach me to number my days that I may apply my heart to wisdom. For such wisdom we should all pray, because not every one like this youth will be laid low with a lingering disease, therefore let us become obedient to him while we are in good health. The Lord is so gracious, so kind and so merciful if we only deny ourselves and become obedient to his merciful instructions then, we may also, already in our healthful days, have the assurance of the heavenly sweetness even as this youth in his sickness could rejoice in view of his passing over beyond the grave.
0! why then will we not accept the free grace, the glad tidings of the gospel? If we lead a godly life, we have, even in this world more enjoyment, (than if we live in sin) and also the promise of future salvation and all
that it costs to yield obedience to Jesus Christ is our self-will.

OLIVER S. SHANTZ M. M. E. DETROIT, MICH.

When football enthusiasts speak of the Rangers and their deeds of prowess on the green, the name of Oliver Shantz, full back, is generally mentioned in eulogistic terms. Mr. Shantz was a good player; he possessed a cool judgment and plenty of stamina. He shone at manly sport and shines today as a Master Mechanical Engineer.

He left Berlin in 1889 to attend Cornell University, Ithaca N. Y. and took up a course in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. He graduated in 1893, obtaining the degree of M. E. In 1893-4, he designed, installed and put into operation, the present plant of the Jacob Y. Shantz & Son Co's. button manufactory, Berlin. For a twelve-month, he was with Schaefer & Budenburg Co. of Brooklyn N. Y., manufacturers of steam gauges and engineering appliances. Then for four years Mr. Shantz was engaged on the Sibley College faculty, in the experimental Mechanical Engineering department of Cornell University, at the end of which period he obtained his Master degree, M. M. E.

He was an industrious student, and while taking the courses at Cornell, spent the summer vacation with various large manufacturing firms, thus combining the practical and actual with the theoretical. He spent considerable time in the workshops of the Otis Elevator Co. Yonkers, N. Y., the Hendrick Ice Machine Co. Carbondale Pa. and one year with Thos. A. Edison, the famous inventor, as Assistant Engineer in the Edison Portland Cement Co. at Stewardsville, N. J. Another year was spent with the Westinghouse Church Kerr Co., Consulting and Contracting Engineers. The recital of the time spent by Mr. Shantz in preparing for his life work, shows that he intended to reach a high grade in his profession.

For five years afterwards he was in the employ of the Rand Drill Co. of New York, Manufacturers of Compressed Air and Mining Machinery, in the capacity of Assistant Chief Engineer, and during the period filled many important commissions. Of late, he has been and is now with the Ingersoll Rand Co., as their travelling expert in Hydro-Pneumatic Engineer-ing with headquarters at Detroit, Mich. Among the societies of which Mr. Shantz is a member are: American Society of Mechanical Engineers; Engineers Club of New York; The Western Railway Club of Chicago ; Delta Lau Delta Fraternity, of Cornell Town & Gown Club, Cornell, and Cornell University Club of New York.

Mr. Shantz has made good and his many friends in Berlin will congratulate him on his success.

Stauffer - Mary, daughter of Jacob and Magdalena Shiry-Betzner, was born Aug. 4, 1843; died June 23, 1924; aged 80 y. 10 m. 19 d. On May 23, 1865, she was married to Benjamin Stauffer. To them were born 5 sons and 3 daughters, 6 of whom survive: Norman, Isaac, Fred, Mrs. Noah Weber, Mrs. Jonah Baer, and Mrs. A. L. Shantz. Beside the children there remain to mourn 21 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, 5 brothers (John, Isaac, Samuel, Moses, Aaron) and 3 sisters (Mrs. Noah Stauffer, Mrs. Aaron Cressman, and Mrs. Ephraim Cressman). Sister Stauffer made her peace with God early in life, joined the church of her choice, and remained a faithful, consistent member until God called her home. Funeral services were held June 25 from the home of her daughter, Mrs. Noah Weber, Waterloo, to the Kitchener Mennonite Church for service and burial in adjoining cemetery. Services conducted by Brethren Noah Hunsberger, Jonas Snider, and Oscar Burkholder.

Stauffer - Pre. Noah Stauffer was born in Waterloo Co., Ont., Feb. 13, 1842; died in his late home in Waterloo Co., Ont., May 20, 1928; aged 86 y 3 m. 7 d., of the infirmities of age and pneumonia. Barbara Betzner, wife of Pre. Noah Stauffer, was born near Breslau, Ont., Dec. 19, 1844; died in Waterloo, Ont., May 22, 1928 (twenty-nine hours after the departure of her husband) of the infirmities of her age, aged 83 y. 5 m. 3 d. Brother Stauffer was the only survivor of a family of four brothers and four sisters. There remain of sister Stauffer's family, of half-brother and sisters; Moses, Aaron, and Samuel Betzner. Mrs. Aaron Cressman and Mrs. Ephraim Cressman. Of the immediate family of their children, all survive: Mrs. Ida Snyder (who resided with and cared for her parents for the past seven years) Obal Stauffer, and Jacob Stauffer. After a union of sixty years and six months, in which they shared the sorrows and joys in the labors of life, and engaged in the service of the Lord for nearly fifty-two years, blessed with joy of Christian labor and fellowship they laid down their life together to enter the long expected, and earnestly looked for, rest of the servants of the Lord. Brother Stauffer was ordained to the ministry if the Mennonite Church for the Strassburg congregation, near the place of his birth, Nov. 9 1876, by bishops Joseph Hagey, Amos Cressman, and Abram Martin. Early in his ministry he was active in building up the Church, in strengthening the spiritual life of the membership. In company with the ministering brethren - Solomon Gehman, Jacob Gingerich, and Joseph Nahrgang - evangelistic services were conducted in the homes of the brotherhood in Christ, in evening services at which the unsaved were admonished to repentance and faith in Christ, and many were led to Christ in these first evening evangelistic efforts. Brother Stauffer is said to have preached the first English sermon in the Waterloo Mennonite congregation, at the Hagey Church, near Preston, Ont. His services were much in demand on account of his ability in this language. He was nominated for the office of bishop at least on three different occasions - at the ordination of Elias Weber, Jonas Snider, and Abram Gingerich. His labors and influence in the conference work were invaluable, and his counsels were deliberate and wholesome. In his duties and service for the Church in general his efforts were appreciated in the organization of the first evangelizing Board, organized at Elkhart, Indiana. He with Bro. Jonas Snider, were the Canadian representatives at the preliminary meeting leading to the organization of the General Conference. His heart was in the growth and progress of the Church. He labored constantly and faithfully for the young and the old in the kingdom of Christ as long as the Lord gave him strength. His labors are ended. His co-laborers will miss him, the Church will honor his memory, the Lord alone will reward His servant. Funeral services were conducted May 25, from the home, where brief services were conducted by Bro. C. F. Derstine, and thence to the Waterloo Mennonite Church, services were conducted by the brethren, Jonas Snider, S. F. Coffman, and C. F. Derstine. An assembly which filled all the available space in the audience room, lobbies and basement, and some waiting outside the building, gave silent and impressive testimony to the esteem in which Brother and Sister Stauffer were held by the many who knew them. The remains were laid to rest side by side in the Mennonite cemetery. They wait the day of their resurrection, when they shall be like Him who redeemed them and for whose love they served their Lord and coming King.

Death of Mr. Isaac Betzner

There passed away at his home here on Wednesday evening, April 7th, Mr. Isaac Betzner, a well-known and esteemed resident of this town, at the age of 77 years. He had been in failing health for some time. The late Mr. Betzner was born at Breslau and was a direct descendant of one of the first settlers of Waterloo County, who came over here from Pennsylvania around the year 1800. He followed the calling of miller, in which he showed exceptional ability, and was employed in the local flour mills for many years, as well as in Baden, Preston and other places. Several years ago he was forced to relinquish his work owing to failing eyesight. He was married to Miss Catharine Ernst, of this town. He leaves his sorrowing widow and three daughters to mourn his demise, namely, Mrs. Norman Kropf, Mrs. Otto A. Ritz, and Miss Sophia, all of New Hamburg. Two sons and one daughter predeceased him. The funeral will be held on Saturday afternoon from his late home to Riverside Cemetery.

Weber. - Sister Elizabeth, only daughter of the late Bro. Geo. Histand, was born near German Mills, Ont., Sept. 11, 1846. Nov. 14, 1865, she was married to Bro. Daniel Weber with whom she lived in holy matrimony over 51 years. She had a paralytic stroke nearly a year and a half ago, since which time she had been quite helpless though her mind was quite clear to the end. As a result of another stroke she passed away quite suddenly on the evening of April 6. Aged 70 y. 7 m. 51 d. She leaves to mourn her loss a bereaved husband, 3 sons and their families, and 1 adopted daughter; but they do not mourn as such who have no hope. Funeral services on the 29th by Bro. Samuel Bowman at the house and the brethren, U. K. Weber and Noah Stauffer, at the Mennonite Church at Kitchener, Ont. Interment in the adjoining cemetery.

"Death of John B.Bean in Port Huron - The Port Huron Times-Herald contains an account of the death of Mr. John B. Bean, which took place suddenly on September 7th in that city. Deceased was a son of the late Noah and Barbara Bean,formerly of Wilmot Township. Mr. David Bean of Waterloo and Mr. Owen Bean of Francis St., Kitchener were uncles of deceased.

The Times-Herald of September 7th reports the death as follows: John B. .Bean, who had been engaged in the grocery business at North Port Huron for many years died suddenly at his home 2523 Stone street, early this morning. Mr. Bean retired last night apparently in good health. During the night Mrs. Bean heard her husband breathing heavily, but did not at the time think it was in distress. His usual hour for arising was five o'clock and when Mrs.Bean went to call him shortly after that hour he had passed. Mr. Bean was 59 years of age and engaged in the grocery business many years ago with the late W. D. Brown, the business being conducted under the firm name of Bean & Brown. When Mr. Brown retired, Mr. Bean conducted the business until his sudden death this morning terminated his activities. Mr. Bean is survived by a widow, one son, George, who is now stationed at Mr. Cook aviation field, and one daughter, Ethel Bean. The funeral services will be held from the family residence 2523 Stone street, Monday afternoon.

MENNO BEAN SUCCUMBS

Menno Bean, 90, died Sunday in his home at 401 Main Street, after a short illness. He was a retired farmer who had lived in Yale since 1920

Mr. Bean was born in Waterloo County, Ont., January 29, 1860 and came with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Noah Bean, to. Greenwood Township when he was 14. He married Mary Faust in Greenwood Township in 1889. The couple moved to Yale on retirement from farming in 1920, and she died in 1944.

Surviving are one brother, Noah of Yale; seven nephews and four neices.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 p. m. Wednesday in the Peters Funeral Home with Rev. Alfred Eddy, pastor of Yale Methodist Church, officiating. Burial was in Elmwood Cemetery.

Allen Bean Allen Bean, 82, resident of Greenwood Township for 70 years, died at his home Friday morning after a short illness. He was born February 5, 1865, in Waterloo County, Ontario. He came to Greenwood at the age of 12.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Ada Bean, two brothers, Noah and Meno Bean, both of Yale; three stepchildren, Mrs. Arthur Doan, Auburn Heights; Theodore Gottesleben, Yale, and Allen Gottesleben, Detroit; five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

The remains were removed from the Bankert Funeral Home to the residence on Saturday afternoon. Funeral services were held at 2:3,0 p. m. Sunday in Greenwood Evangelical Church. Rev. Melviri Lempke, pastor, officiated and burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery, near Fargo.

Word was received by relatives in the Twin City announcing the death at Detroit of Ralph C. Bean, nephew of Jonathan Cook, Kitchener, and a native of New Hamburg. The funeral was held at Detroit. During his residence in Detroit he made a host of friends, who with relatives in this district regret to learn of his passing.

The late Mr. Bean was born at New Hamburg a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Bean. For the past fifty years he has resided at Detroit where for over thirty years he conducted a successful bakery business. Ill health two years ago forced his withdrawal from active business." Miss Edith Bean

The death occurred on Tuesday at the Kitchener-Waterloo Hospital of Miss Edith Bean at the age of 67 years, following a lengthy illness. Miss Bean was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Bean and was born on the farm now owned by Mr. Samuel Wagler on the Gravel Road, two miles west of New Hamburg. She resided with her sister, Mrs. Christian Johansen, in Wilmot township near Mannheim, and was a member of Trinity United Church, Kitchener. Surviving are two brothers, Eldon H. Bean, Kitchener, and Melvin H. Bean, London, and two sisters, Mrs. Albert Smith, Grande Prairie, Alta., and Mrs. Johansen.

Funeral services were held at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home, Kitchener, on Thursday afternoon with Rev O. P. Hossie in charge. Interment was in Lingelbach Cemetery on the highway west of New Hamburg.

KITCHENER, Ont., - CP) \emdash David Alexander Bean, 86, a former Kitchener publisher died Wednesday. At the age of 22,

Mr. Bean became managing director and publisher of his father's newspaper, the Berlin Telegraph, which later became the Kitchener Telegraph.

When the Telegraph was bought by the Kitchener-Waterloo Record in 1922, Mr. Bean launched an insurance company.

He is survived by three sons, Air Vice-Marshal Wilfred Bean, air member for technical services in Ottawa; Walter Bean of Waterloo and Audrey Bean of Kitchener; and by one daughter, Mrs. Fred Breithaupt of Kitchener. Funeral will be held in Kitchener Friday.

The community of Waterloo and the county was deeply shocked by the sudden passing of one of its most prominent citizens in the person of Roy Sylvester Bean, the genial and very popular proprietor of The Waterloo Chronicle. Mr. Bean came to his office after dinner to prepare his work for this issue. He disappeared for moment from his desk, and when his presence was urgently needed, he was found in the wash-room, but his work was done. He evidently bad a sudden seizure of the heart and passed away before anyone knew of his distress.

Roy Bean, as he was commonly known by his host of friends and business associates, was born in 1884 in Elmira, moving with his parents to Waterloo at a later date. He was educated in the public schools in Waterloo and Woodstock College. Later he entered business with his father. In 1922, he and his brother Clive took over the Chronicle paper and press from his father. Mr. Clive Bean retired from the partnership a few years later.

Mr. Bean was a man who was deeply interested in the welfare of the town of Waterloo and his native county. While he never sought public office, he was always pushing foreword strong men for public position and then supporting them loyally In their term of office. Among Iris business associates he was al.: ways looked up to as a man of sterling integrity and honor. His intimate friends looked upon him as a most congenial companion. In his private life the one thing that deeply characterized his life was his chummy relationship with his five boys. Among the publishers of weekly newspapers, Roy Bean was widely and favorably known. He has carried on his own paper with great credit to himself and of profit to the community which his valuable paper served.

He was an active member of First United Church, a member of the Session and Official Board, Treasurer of the Benevolent Fund, and was always ready to serve the interest of his church in every way. He was a member of the Waterloo Lodge A.F. & A.M. His favourite recreation was golf.

In 1911 he married Margaret McDougall, who survives him. He is survived by five sons, Roy M. and William M., associated with the father in The Chronicle Press, David M. interne at the K.W. Hospital, Edward in the Royal Bank, Kitchener, and John, attending the local Collegiate; two brothers, D. Alex. of Kitchener, and Clive of Toronto; and three sisters, Miss Anna R., musical director of First United Church, Miss Emma, of Kitchener, and Mrs. David Musselman, Lockwood, Sask. Funeral arrangements are not complete at the time of going to press, but will be announced later. The sympathy of the entire com• munity goes out to Mrs. Bean and the family in their sudden and sore bereavement.

Funeral on Monday One of Largest Ever Held in Waterlo. - Editor Died Suddenly in 56^th Year.

Evidence of the high regress in which he was held in the community and the province was shown in the fine tribute paid by a host of friends at the last, rites on Monday far the late Roy Sylvester Bean, editor and owner of The Waterloo Chronicle.

Mr. Bean died suddenly in his plant on Thursday from a heart attack while completing his final sheets of copy for last Thursday's newspaper.

The funeral, one of the ever held in Waterloo, was held from his late residence, Albert St. The service was conducted by the Rev. E. Val. Tilton, minister of First United Church, assisted by Rev. Finlay Matheson, a former pastor, now retired and living in Kingston, Ont.

The Rev. Matheson gave the main address in which he drew analogies between the life of Moses and Enoch to that of the departed. "As Enoch walked with God and God took him unto himself, so our departed friend had been walking with God in his active life in the Christian church and now suddenly God had called him home and he thought of him now as walking on with. God," he said. The speaker paid a very warm tribute to the personal character of Mr. Bean. When he began his ministry in Waterloo their relationship was simply that of minister and parishioner but in the course of his ministry that relationship had ripened into a very warm friendship, the memory of which he will always cherish.

The Rev. Tilton began his address by saying: "We had all been so stunned by the sudden passing of our friend and loved one that it was difficult to adjust one's thinking to form a true appraisal of his life and character. It is a tragic reminder that we should all set our own houses in order for such a time as we know not of. "

These sudden deaths which are becoming altogether too common are bringing home to us all in a dramatic way the necessity for making our social and economic order more christian. The human frame is altogether too frail to stand the strain of this highly competitive order. It is altogether too costly in human resources.

Speaking of Mr. Bean, Mr. Tilton said: "There are some men who, like small stores, carry all their goods on display in their front windows, but it was not so with the, departed. He was a man of quiet reserve. While he was always deeply interested in the welfare of the community, he himself never sought public office. He sought rather to choose the strong man for the office and then to stand loyally behind him and support him in his work.

"Honesty, integrity and thrift were his dominant qualities, and these are the qualities that every community is greatly in need of at the present time. These are the qualities that he leaves as his richest inheritance to you, his boys. His sudden passing made it impossible for him to say to you what he would like to have said. May I be permitted to say to you now, what I feel he would like to say to you now, what I feel he would like to have said. First all allhe would say "carry on".

"There are some who will tell you there are short cuts to success. They will clothe these short cuts with much glamour. The true success of life are only about one per cent genius and ninety-nine per cent. hard work. I have tried to build our business around the three principles - honesty, industry and thrift. I leave to you this tradition that has been sacred to me."

Mr. Tilton concluded by saying: "You boys were his joy and his pride. Your father sought to make you his chums and to those who knew him intimately this was his marked characteristic. Therefore the most enduring monument you can build to his memory is to carry on these enriching traditions.

"Mr. Bean loved his church and served it loyally. As treasurer of the Benevolent Fund he was always deeply interested in the welfare of the needy. He always felt that the meeting of need by the handing out of some charity to meet an immediate necessity was not sufficient, but there should be some change in the whole system as would insure a decent living for all," said Mr Tilton.

The deceased was the youngest son of the late David Bean and Mary Ann Fry. All members of his family were present, including. Alexander Bean, Miss Anna Bean and Miss Emma Bean of Kitchener, Mrs. David B. Musselman (Blanche) of Lockwood, Sask., and Mr. Clive S. Bean of Toronto.

The pallbearers were Walter A. Bean, Wilfrid W. Bean and C., Aubrey Bean of Kitchener, Ellsworth Bean of New Hamburg, and W. G. Cressman of Waterloo, all nephews of the deceased, J. Maurice Scott of London, R. G. Anglin of Toronto and Harold Wilson of Waterloo.

"Robert John Bean, formerly of R.R.#1 New Hamburg, died in the Nithview Home, New Hamburg, Monday, Nov. 19, 1990 at the age of 98 years. He was born in Wilmot Tp., the son of Isaac Bean and Margaret Gilmar. He was the Secretary-Treasurer of the former S.S.No.5 Wilmot School for many years, and the Chairman of the Waterloo Oxford Secondary School Board. At the time it was built, he turned the first sod. He was the husband of Laura Beatrice Wood of Nithview Home, whom he married Apr. 21, 1920. He was the father of Wallis and his wife Ruth of New Hamburg; Marjorie and her husband Peter Hallman of Cambridge, and Grace and her husband Russell Scott of Kitchener. He was also survived by one sister-in-law, Mrs. Martha Bean of Islington, 10 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by three brothers, Alfred, Frederick and Howard, and by one sister, Mrs. Laura Facey.

Mrs. Lydia Ann Shafer, 81, died Monday at the Lydia Nursing Home, 17 Lydia St., Kitchener, following a lengthy illness. Born at Kossuth, she was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Moyer. She was a member of Bethany United Missionary Church. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Carl (Arlene) Hendrick, Elmira; two brothers, Oliver Moyer of Rochester, N.Y., and Ephriam Moyer of Michigan. One grandson also survives. Her husband, Ephriam Shafer, died March 12. The body is at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home where the funeral will be held Thursday at 3 p.m. Burial will take place at Cressman Mennonite Cemetery, Breslau. Rev. H. B. Wideman will officiate In the absence of Rev. H. S. Hallman.

Mrs. Urias K. Weber, 78, of 142 Courtland Ave. East, died yesterday in the K-W Hospital. The wife of Rev. Urias K. Weber, she was a native of Waterloo Township. The former Magdalena Shoemaker, she was last surviving member of her family. A charter member of the church, Mrs. Weber was also a member of the Women's Missionary Association. She and Rev. Mr. Weber were married in 1899 in Kitchener. Surviving are five sons and four daughters. They are Gordon and Howard of Kitchener, Stanley of New Dundee, Edward of Waterloo and Paul of Oakville, and Mrs. Irvin (Olive) Eby, Miss Ruby Weber and Miss Edna Weber, all of Kitchener, and Mrs. Maurice (Mary) Plummer of Waterloo. A son, Harold, predeceased her. There are 23 granchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. The body will be at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home until Thursday at 1 p. m. when removal will be made to the church where a service will be conducted at 3 p. m. by Rev. Wilfred Ulrich, pastor. Contributions to the Women's Missionary Society of the church will be accepted as expressions of sympathy.

After an illness of six weeks, Ephriam Shafer, 82, of Kitchener died Wednesday. March 18, at the K-W Hospital. He was born August 10, 1870, near Kossuth. His parents were the late Mr. and Mrs. John Shafer. In 1900, he married the former Lydia Ann Moyer, who survives. Also surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Carl (Arlene) Hendrick of Elmira; one brother, Irvin of Dushore, Pa.: and one grandson. The body was at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home where the funeral was held Saturday at 2 p.m. with interment in Breslau Mennonite Cemetery. Rev. H. S. Hallman officiated.

Weber - Ellen Stauffer was born near Doon, Ont., July 25, 1866; died at Kitchener and Waterloo Hospital, May 2, 1927, after an illness lasting nearly four months. She suffered from complications of inflammatory rheumatisn and bronchial pneumonia. On March 26, 1890, she was married to Abram Clemmer, who preceded her in death twenty-seven years. This union was blessed with five children: Byron, Clarence, and Ruby who died in early childhood, and Orvah, of Royal Oak, Mich., and Gordon, of Kitchener, Ont., who survive her. On May 14, 1902, she was married to Noah S. Weber who survives her. To this union were born two daughters, Mary Irma and Eva Mae also surviving. There were five step-children: Austin Clemmer, Mrs. J. H. Fry, Mrs. A. Erb, Mrs. Ivan Groh and Lorne Weber. Sister Weber accepted her Savior about twenty-five years ago and gladly gave her strength to His cause until she found her rest in His everlasting arms. At her conversion she joined the Mennonite Church of which she remained an active member to the last. She had a singularly kind and genial disposition which everywhere won for her a host of friends who share in common with the grief-stricken home an overwhelming sense of her loss. The funeral services were conducted by Noah Hunsberger. J. R. Webb, Jonas Snider, and C. F. Derstine at the First Mennonite Church, Kitchener. Interment at adjoining cemetery.

He was converted and united with the Mennonite Church in 1891; moved to Alberta with his family in 1900, called to the ministry in 1901, ordained bishop in 1911. Stauffer, Norman B. (1870-1927)

Norman Stauffer Norman B. Stauffer: minister and bishop of the Mount View Mennonite Church near High River, Alberta, was born 30 December 1871 in Waterloo, Ontario, and died 13 September 1927 at Aldersyde, Alberta. He married Elizabeth Otterbein who died 22 August 1914. They were the parents of twelve children, three of which died in infancy. On 1 August 1917 he married Melinda Snider of Waterloo. Norman Stauffer died of a stroke after only a few days of suffering, at the relatively young age of 56.

Norman Stauffer came to Alberta in 1900 to look for a suitable homestead, leaving his wife and family in Waterloo. He obtained work as a carpenter on a Canadian Pacific Railway construction gang, but also established contact with Elias and Catharine Bricker who had come west more than a decade earlier. He returned to his family in Ontario for the winter of 1900-01. On his trip west in 1901 he accompanied S.F. Coffman who had been sent west by the Ontario Mennonite Conference to help organize recently arrived Mennonite settlers in the territory which would become part of the province of Alberta late. Stauffer's family joined him in June of 1901 after he secured a farmstead five miles east of Aldersyde, Alberta.

Norman and Elizabeth Stauffer were charter members of the Mount View Mennonite Church when it was organized in 1901. At that organizational meeting he was chosen, by lot, and ordained as the minister of the new congregation. He was ordained as bishop in the Alberta-Saskatchewan Mennonite Conference in 1911. In that capacity he travelled a great deal, visiting and serving many of the congregations of the conference. He also met with many of the scattered families and small clusters of Mennonite settlers in Alberta. He participated in numerous Bible conferences and was active in evangelistic work. His preaching style was simple, direct, forceful, and often emotional. He was an influential and respected leader in his home congregation and in the conference.

Stauffer enlisted in the Canadian Forces and served overseas with the Canadian Infantry (Alberta Regiment) 50th Battalion in World War I. He kept his seat in the provincial legislature while he was overseas fighting in the war. On April 10, 1917 he was killed in action during the Battle of Vimy Ridge.

Lieutenant governor Robert Brett honored Stauffer's memory and military service by making special note in the Throne Speech at the opening of the 4th Alberta Legislative Assembly on February 7, 1918.

The small town of Stauffer, Alberta is named in his honor.

Ida, daughter of Bro. and Sister Noah Stauffer, was born at Strassburg, Ont., Aug. 9, 1868; died at her home in Waterloo, Ont., Feb.5, 1966; aged 97 y. 5 m. 27 d. She was married to Jacob Snider, who died in 1947. Surviving are 3 sons (Howard, Norman, and Willard), one daughter (Mrs. Erma Nissley), 22 grandchildren, 55 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. One son and 3 daughters preceded her in death. She was a member of the Erb Street congregation. Funeral services were held at Waterloo, in charge of J. B. Martin, assisted by Milton Schwartzentruber.

Ida Stauffer Snider
1868 - 1966

Ida Stauffer Snider's life spanned almost a century. She was born a year after Confederation (1867), the birth of the Canadian nation, and died a year before its centennial. She had leadership and organizational abilities, but few women in the Mennonite Church were given the opportunity to use such gifts in her day. When the Mennonite women in Waterloo saw a need and responded creatively to it, Ida was there to lead the way.

The Waterloo Charity Circle

Ida Stauffer was born in Strasburg, south of the village of Berlin (now Kitchener) on August 8, 1868. Her parents were Noah and Barbara (Betzner) Stauffer. In 1887 Ida was married to Jacob Snider, and they began to farm just west of the village of Waterloo. They were members of the Waterloo Mennonite Church, which became known as Erb Street Mennonite Church after building a new meetinghouse at the edge of town in 1902.

In 1907 two young women from the Waterloo area had joined the staff of the newly established Mennonite Mission in Toronto - Lena Weber and Bernice Devitt. Through the Mission, the Waterloo Mennonites hosted a number of "Fresh Air" children in their homes. This was a program whereby children from the inner city were hosted by rural or farm families for a week or two in the summer. Noting the poor clothing which some of these children were wearing, some of the women from Erb Street met to sew new clothes for them. They decided this was such a good cause that they should do it on a regular basis, for which they should have a more formal organization. The women, aware of the expected procedure, first approached Bishop Jonas Snider for approval, which was granted.

The first organizational meeting took place in June and was held at the Berlin Orphanage. The women worked for the orphanage that day and made a few items for the Toronto Mission as well. They elected Mrs. Jacob Snider (Ida) as President, Mrs. M.S. Weber (Lena Weber's mother) as vice president and Lena Weber (who by this time was back from Toronto) as secretary-treasurer, and also appointed a buying committee. They drew up the list of rules and regulations and chose the name "Charity Circle."

Ida served as president for the first two years. The next four years she was vice-president. Then she was on the buying committee for a few years, and for at least a year had no office. In 1917 Ida was again elected president, which office she held until the annual meeting in 1929. From then on she still served on the buying or quilt-patch cutting committees for another decade. The work of the Charity Circle was always a very important part of her life.

Ida retired from the Ontario Sewing Circle Executive and from the presidency of the Charity Circle when she was 61. People remember her as a good organizer. A granddaughter recalls her grandmother's straight and upright figure. She reminded her of Queen Mary. Ida died on May 2, 1966 at the age of 98. She had witnessed many changes, and incorporated them into a life of usefulness.

Partial Obituary

Word has been received here of the death of Jacob B. Stauffer at Edmonton, Sat. Mr. Stauffer, formerly of near Doon, was a brother of Mrs. Jacob S. Snider, Waterloo. He was 67 years old. Mr. Stauffer went to Western Canada about 35 years ago, and was a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police for some years. He was a s/o the late Rev. and Mrs. Noah Stauffer. Surviving are his wife, two sons, Charles of Edmonton, and Walter of Calgary, one daughters, Mrs. S. A. McNeil of St. Catharines, one sister, Mrs. Snider, Waterloo and one brother, Obal Stauffer, Vancouver. The funeral will be held at Edmonton tomorrow.

After an illness of about ten weeks the death occurred at the Kitchener-Waterloo Hospital on Tuesday night, March 23rd, of Lorena Betzner, widow of the late Norman Kropf.
The deceased was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Betzner and was born in New Hamburg on February 26th, 1881, having thus just passed her 56th year.

She spent her girlhood days here and on her marriage on March 1, 1916, she resided for a short time at Ceylon, Sask., later coming back to New Hamburg. For the past ten years the family resided in Kitchener.

The deceased was a devout adherent of the Lutheran faith and since living in Kitchener she was an active member of the First English Lutheran Church and a member of the Women's Missionary Society, of which she was president a few years ago.

Her husband predeceased her last August, but she leaves in deep bereavement two sons, Emmett and Lorne, of Kitchener, and two sisters, Miss Soph. Betzner, of Kitchener, and Mrs. Elena Ritz, of New Hamburg.

The funeral will be held on Friday afternoon with service by Rev. Mr. Jacobi in Sandrock Funeral Chapel at 2: 30 o'clock followed by internment in Riverside Cemetery, New Hamburg.

Married - The marriage of Miss Lorena Betzner, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Betzner, of this town, to Mr. Norman Kropf, also from here, was solemnized by Rev. Mr. Behrens, pastor of the English Lutheran Church at Berlin, on Wednesday. Owing to the recent bereavement in the bride's family the wedding was a quiet affair. William Betzner A sad death took place here on Sunday, the 9th inst., when Mr. William F. A. Betzner, only surviving son of Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Betzner, passed away after a few days illness with pneumonia, making the third death in the family within the past two years. The deceased had been employed with Mr. H. D. Schmidt, of New Dundee, as machinist, for several months, and was home over the holidays. On Monday of last week he went to Berlin and secured a position in the Rubber Tire Factory and intended to start there on Wednesday, but took sick on Tuesday with that dangerous illness and grew worse despite all medical aid, until death claimed him. The deceased was aged 32 years, 3 months and 5 days. He was a very pleasant young man and for many years a valued member of the New Hamburg Musical Society. Besides his sorrowing parents he leaves three sisters, Misses Loraine, Sophia and Elena at home, to mourn his sudden and untimely demise. The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon to Trinity Lutheran Church for service, with internment in Riverside Cemetery. Rev. Behrens of Berlin officiated. The pall bearers were six cousins of the deceased. The bereaved parents and sisters have the sympathy of their many friends in their sad loss.

Mrs. Nicholas Wenzel Killed

Mrs. Nich. Wenzel, formerly Miss Alice Betzner, daughter of Mrs. Isaac Betzner of this town, was almost instantly killed in an auto accident on Saturday evening about 8 30 o'clock, and her brother, William Betzner, was seriously injured, sustaining a fracture of three ribs near the spine.

Mr. and Mrs. Wenzel and Mr. Betzner left on a short auto ride along Bleam's road, and near Mr. A. Zoeller's farm, about two miles east of the village, the accident occurred. Just how it happened is not definitely known, but the car swerved around and turned turtle on the centre of the road. Wm Betzner and Mr. Wenzel were thrown clear of the car, but Mrs. Wenzel was pinned underneath. Mr. Wenzel was but slightly injured and stunned and was able to seek help. Passersby helped to extricate the unfortunate young woman from beneath the car and she was removed to the home of Mr. Andrew Zoeller and medical aid immediately summoned. Upon examination by Dr. Marty it was found that her spine was broken and she passed away about an hour after the accident occurred without having regained consciousness. Her brother was taken in an auto to his home here where he is still in a precarious condition.

The remains of Mrs. Wenzel were brought to the home of her parents on Sunday forenoon, from whence the funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon to Riverside Cemetery, the service being held in Trinity Lutheran Church.

The sad affair cast a gloom over the community and much sympathy is felt for the bereaved family. The deceased was 27 years of age, and was for the past five years dining room girl at the Commercial Hotel here, and had been married but recently. A large circle of friends deplore her tragic and untimely death. She is survived by her husband and parents, three sisters and one brother, who have the deepest sympathy of all.

Elena E. Ritz

Elena Ritz, one of Waterloo Region's oldest residents and a descendant of the Betzner family, pioneers who settled in Waterloo County in the spring of 1800 passed away June 19, 2000 at her residence, Nithview Home, 200 Boullee St., New Hamburg where here she had resided for the past four years She was 106 years of age.

She was born at Baden August 8, 1893 a daughter of the late Isaac Betzner and his wife, the former Catharine Ernst and came to New Hamburg with her parents at an early age. She was married October 21, 1920 to the late Otto A. Ritz who predeceased her in January, 1928. She was also predeceased by three sisters, Mrs. Loualice (Nicholas) Wenzel, Mrs. Lorena (Norman) Kropf and Miss Sophia Betzner, and two brothers, Ervin and William and a great-granddaughter Jean.

Elena was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, New Hamburg, where she had been organist for 57 years until her retirement in 1968. She was an accomplished pianist and a member of the New Hamburg Orchestra which provided music for programs and dances in the early decades of the century. She also played piano in the local theatres to provide musical accompaniment in the days of silent movies.

She will be remembered also as the pianist for the New Hamburg Club Swingers, a group which played many engagements over a wide area. They demonstrated school-learned calisthenics accompanied by the piano music, "En Route" march. One of her enjoyments over six decades was to play piano duets with her husband's cousin, the late Miss Louise (Babe) Ritz.

Loving mother of Dick & his wife Chris, Ernie & his wife Betty of New Hamburg, dear grandmother of Pam Ritz (Joey), Judy (Ted) Seyler, Bonnie (Stephen) May, Rick (Janice) Ritz, Bill (Kathryn) Ritz, John Ritz & his friend Betty. The Mill Fire

Early on the warm August 8 evening in 1902, while local residents were enjoying a variety program staged by a Chautauqua group at the local school yard, cries of "fire" and the sounding of the town bell could be heard to signal for help to fight a blaze.

Little Elena Betzner, whose father, Isaac, had been head miller at the local flour mill, had been taken to the evening program to mark her ninth birthday day.

Soon a column of thick smoke arose over the downtown area. This was a spectacular fire, for it was at the local flour and grist mill in the heart of the village. The large three-storey frame building was soon engulfed in flames and in a short time was razed to the ground. This was the mill built by William Scott in 1848, a half century before. It had a colourful history, having passed through the hands of a succession of owners and operators, and had been extensively damaged in the 1889 boiler explosion.

The economic loss was to affect not only the owners and employees but also the community as well, for it drew farmers and their families for miles around who shopped and transacted business in town as well as at the mill.

Mrs. Edward Pfaff, bride of New Hamburg's newest barber, who had recently moved to town, stood at the window of the couple's temporary home in the Queen's Hotel, (now 73-77 Peel Street) just a hundred meters from the mill. She watched with a mixture of apprehension and awe at the scene as flames and smoke billowed into the air, carrying sparks and embers over the buildings nearby.

Embers and burning shingles settled on nearby roofs, some of which began to smoulder. Residents
and building occupants busily carried pails of water to douse flames. New Hamburg's steam-powered fire engine Chugged valiantly, but to little avail. The frame building was doomed, and it burned to the foundation. The loss of the mill would have a definite impact on its patrons and the economy of the village as well.

Weber, Josiah H., eldest son of the late Daniel and Elizabeth (Histand) Weber, was born Oct. 24, 1866, and passed away peacefully at the Kitchener-Waterloo Hospital on Sept. 10, 1940, after several months of failing health; aged 73 y. 10 m. 17 d. Bro. Weber was a member of the Mennonite Church since his younger years. In 1899 he was married to Hannah Biehn who died about four years ago. He leaves 1 brother, George A. Weber of near Kitchener, Ont. Another brother, Ephraim; passed away six years ago. Funeral services were held at the First Mennonite Church of Kitchener on Sept. 12, in charge of the ministering brethren Simon Martin and Merle Shantz.

Weber. - Ephraim H., son of Daniel and Elizabeth Weber, was born June 29, 1875; died June 22, 1934; aged 58 y. 11 m. 23 d. He was born and resided near Kitchener all his life. He is survived by his wife (Maria Steckel), 4 sons (Clayton, Ion, Eldon, Mervin), 1 daughter (Mrs. Laura Hamsher, Berlin, Ohio). and 2 brothers (Josiah H. and George A., of Kitchener). He was a faithful member of the Mennonite Church and well esteemed in the community at large. He was known as a man of integrity and dependability and possessed of a quiet dignity and modesty. He was the incarnation of the common virtues of life, so often undervalued, nevertheless they are what make men and nations great. His self-controlled speech was a desirable quality that all Christians might well covet. His sudden passing in the night while asleep is a loud call to all to prepare to meet their God in peace. His passing will leave a vacant place, and memory will treasure his personality "till we meet again." The services were conducted at the First Mennonite Church, in charge of Bros. C. F. Weber.-George Abram Weber passed away at his home at Parkway, Kitchener, Ont. , on Thursday, Aug. 21, 1941, after an illness of about six weeks. Bro. Weber was born on June 24, 1879 and passed away on the farm of his birth; aged 62 y. 1 m. 28 d. He is survived by his wife (nee Malinda Woolner), with whom he was joined in holy wedlock 39 years ago at Nachez; also by 5 daughter, Vera, Mrs. Urbin Snider of Bloomingdale, Mabel, Mrs. Clayton Siebert, at home, Edna, Mrs. Edgar Martin of Elmira, Gladys, Mrs. Roy Shantz of Kitchener, and Mildred, at home. Eight grandchildren also survive. He was predeceased by 1 daughter who died in infancy. Bro. Weber's life and service was a rich boon to the church that he so faithfully served. He was known as a kind, patient, faithful and loyal servant of God. He will be missed, his helpful counsel will be missed, but we mutually rejoice in the fullness of his life, and his usefulness well nigh to the close of his life. Bro. Weber served the First Mennonite Church as Deacon for 30 years. He was Secretary of the Mennonite Mission Board for 25 years, Treasurer of the Bible School Board for a number of years, Member of the Deacons' Welfare Board. Bro. Weber during his lifetime held many more positions of trust. A loving tribute of respect was rendered Bro. Weber by his fellow deacons, ministers, and bishops, some fifty, who rose when his body was carried into the church building, then viewed the body first, and proceeded together to the cemetery, where they sang, "Blest be the tie that binds." The funeral services were in charge of the pastor, Bro. C. F. Derstine, and associate minister, Bro. Merle Shantz, conducted at First Mennonite Church, Kitchener, Ont.
