    PARKS, MARY ANN (Nee Eagle)

Another of our oldest and most respected residents, relict of the late Alexander Parks, in her 81st year. On Tuesday morning, February 4, 1908, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. William Hortop. She had been quite infirm for a few years but was always able to be more or less about, until some few weeks ago, when she was taken seriously ill at the home of her daughter. Born in Norfolk County in England, she came to Beverly with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Eagle, when she was 11 years of age. After a time, they removed to the head of Puslinch Lake, to the farm now occupied by Marvin Eagle. Mrs. Park's mother was one of the earliest schoolteachers in these parts. She taught school in her own home. Archie McAllister was one of her pupils. Mrs. Parks remembered when Galt was so small that it could boast of nothing but a blacksmith shop, hotel and one store. After the grist mill was built at Galt, her husband would take the flour home on his back. Her nearest relatives lived in Blenheim Township and there, she would sometimes visit, taking her children on horseback, following the blazed trail through the woods. Great excitement prevailed when the macadamized road was being built to from Hamilton to Guelph. The next epoch of the kind was when the railroad was being built through Hespeler. The late A. J. Brewster, while filling a contract for railway ties, lived at her home. Her father, on one occasion, was extra late getting home, as a consequence of having to await moonlight to get home safely, for a pack of wolves were in the neighbourhood. Mother and daughter went in search of the father and the wolves passed them by, on the side that the wind protected them from detection. A panther was in the vicinity on one occasion. These are some of the thrilling stories that she was able to tell to her grandchildren. She was married to Alexander Parks on December 8, 1842 by Rev. William Meldrum. Mr. J. W. Parks is the proud possessor of their marriage license, which is properly considered an heirloom of the family. Printing was out of the question; it was neatly written with pen and ink. They settled at Puslinch Lake (at Barber's Beach), on property now owned by Mr. J. Wayper, having paid for the property with a goose and a gander. For many years, they conducted the Park's Hotel, now the property of Josh Wayper. Mrs. Parks was a member of the Methodist Church for upwards of sixty years. That she always inculcated righteous living in her family may be known by the godly walk of those, who are following in her footsteps. Since the death of her husband twenty-six years ago, Mrs. Parks made her home with her children. She was blessed with no less than forty grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren. Her daughter, Mrs. Alfred Howitt predeceased her sixteen years ago. Survived by Mrs. John Blatchford, Mrs. Hannah Brown, William Parks, J. Wesley Parks and Mrs. William Hortop. The funeral took place on Wed. , Feb. 6 at 2 from the residence of her son- in-law, William Hortop and was largely attended. Interment Hespeler Cemetery.

    - Information from marriage certificates: Elizabeth Ann Parks married Alfred Howitt. Mary Ann Parks married John Blatchford.

    Notes:

Death of Elijah Eagle Sr. Hespeler lost one of her most respected citizens on Monday afternoon, when Elijah Eagle Sr., passed to his last long rest after an illness extending over the past six months. Deceased, who was in his 75th year, was born near Norwich, Norfolk Co., England, and came to Canada with his parents when only three years of age. They settled at Puslinch Lake on the farm now occupied by Mr. Marvin Eagle, and with the exception of about a year and a half spent at Galt deceased had lived in Puslinch and Hespeler all his life. He was twice married, first to Louisa Adams, who died some 39 years ago, and then to Ellen Congo who survives him. He had lived in Hespeler for the last 13 years and had always been a good citizen. Kindly and sympathetic to a degree, he made many friends and earned and retained the respect and esteem of all who knew him. He was for many years an active member of the board of Health, and took a great interest in public affairs. He was an adherent of the Methodist Church and a staunch lifelong conservative. Possessed of a comfortable competence he had built for himself a pretty home on Walker St. and was enjoying the evening of his days in peaceful content, when stricken with his last illness and although at times he rallied, could not at his advanced age repel the ravages of disease, and quite prepared to go, slept away, surrounded by the members of his beloved family at 4 p.m. on Monday. In addition to his widow he leaves a family of four children-- Marvin, who resides on the homestead farm at Puslinch Lake, Mrs. W.J. Ellis of Wilford, Man.; Mrs. Geo. Baker, of Hespeler, and Mr. D.M. Eagle, of the Windsor Collegiate staff--to mourn him. The funeral was held from his late residence, Walker St., on Wednesday afternoon to the Hespeler Cemetery for interment and was largely attended. Rev. A.M. Hamilton conducted the services and the pall bearers were Messrs. Marvin and David Eagle, Geo. L.Baker, Geo. A. Martin, of Berlin, R.K. Knowles and J.W. Parks.

    EAGLE, ELIJAH Sr.

Hespeler lost one of her most respected citizens at his home, on Monday afternoon, June 29, 1908 at 4: 15, after an illness extending over the past six months, aged 74 years, 10 months, and 3 days. He was born near Norwich, Norfolk County in England on August 26, 1833 and came to Canada with his parents, when only 3 years of age. They settled at Puslinch Lake on the farm now occupied by Marvin Eagle and with the exception of about a year and a half spent at Galt, he had lived in Puslinch and Hespeler all his life. In his young manhood, he occupied the farm near Galt, now owned by Archie Ferguson but returned to the old homestead near the lake. He was twice married, first to Louisa Adams, who died some thirty-nine years ago and then to Ellen Congo, who survives him. On retiring from farming some fifteen years ago, he removed to Galt. He lived in Hespeler for the past thirteen years and had always been a good citizen. Kindly and sympathetic to a degree, he made many friends and earned and retained the respect and esteem of all who knew him. He was, for many years, an active member of the Board of Health and took a great interest in public affairs. He was an adherent (another report states he was a life-long member) of the Methodist Church and lived up to its highest ideal in a noble Christian character, with a citizenship which we will all do well to emulate. He was a staunch and life-long Conservative. Possessed of a comfortable competence, he purchased land and had built for himself a pretty home on Walker St. in Hespeler. His was too energetic a spirit to be idle, so he generally was found busy at some employment. He shipped many carloads of turnips to New York City since residing here and always superintended the work himself. He was enjoying the evening of his days in peaceful content, when stricken with his last illness and although at times he rallied, could not at his advanced age, repel the ravages of disease and quite prepared to go, slept away, surrounded by the members of his beloved family. In addition to his widow, he leaves four children by his first wife: Marvin, who resides on the homestead farm at Puslinch Lake; Mrs. Wellington J. Ellis of Wilford (or Walford), Manitoba; Mrs. George L. Baker of Hespeler; and David M. Eagle of the Windsor Collegiate staff. The funeral took place from his residence on Walker St., where services were held on Wed., July 1 at 2: 30 to Hespeler Cemetery for interment. Rev. A. M. Hamilton conducted the services and pallbearers were: Marvin and David Eagle; George L. Baker, George A. Martin of Berlin, R. H. Knowles and J. W. Parks.

-Information from the marriage certificate of Mary Eagle: Born c. 1871 in Puslinch, daughter of Elijah and Ellen Eagle. She married George L. Baker on Apr. 5, 1899.

-Information from the marriage certificate of Sarah Ann Eagle: Born c. 1861, daughter of Elijah and Louisa Eagle married Wellington J. Ellis, born c. 1858, son of William and Nancy Ellis on Mar. 29, 1882.

She moved to Hespeler about thirty-eight years ago and resided here ever since. She had been married to Mr. Brown for fifty-five years. Mr. Brown died eighteen years ago. During her long life in the neighbourhood, she saw many transformations. In her younger days, this district was practically all bush, with an isolated farm clearing at intervals. As time passed, clearings were made and the village of New Hope sprung into being. Later, the name was changed to Hespeler and the present busy manufacturing town came into being. Having an attractive personality, she won a wide circle of friends and was highly esteemed in a large circle of friends. No worthy appeal went unanswered by her. Of her twelve children, seven survive. She leaves three daughters: Mrs. John Jardine, Mrs. A. R. Proud and Mrs. James Hunter, all of Hespeler; four sons, Alex of Newark, NJ; William of Calgary; John Wesley and Elmo of Toronto. William and J. W. Parks are brothers and Mrs. William Hortop is a sister. In addition, there are fifteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. The funeral was held from her residence on Sat. , March 3rd at 2 to the Hespeler Cemetery. Rev. J. J. Liddy, pastor of the Methodist Church, of which she was a lifelong member, conducted the service. Pallbearers: J. W. Parks, Will Parks, James Hunter, John Jardine, Albert E. Proud and J. W. Brown of Toronto.

    HOWITT, JOHN ALEX

A telegram to Mrs. Howitt brought the terribly sudden and sad news, that Dr. Howitt had passed away on November 25, 1907, at the age of 43 years, at Etiomani, SK., where he had been boarding at the Temperance Hotel. December 7th would have been his 44th birthday. The news of the doctor's demise is the more deplorable, as he had just completed arrangements, whereby his wife and family were to remove to the west to join him during the coming spring (or before Christmas - differing reports), as he had recently been appointed medical advisor to four large camps, numbering a hundred men in each, in the employ of the Canadian Northern Railway Co. His last letter to the family told of his intention to take a twenty mile trip to this camp on the railroad. It was his custom to write every two or three days. Dr. Howitt was born at Puslinch Lake, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Howitt. His mother was a daughter of Alex Parks. Being of a scholarly turn, he entered medical school with his associates, Dr. S. S. Harris, Dr. James Cunningham and Dr. Cormack. He spent a few years at Morriston but finally removed to Hespeler. On Jan. 2, 1906, he went to the Canadian west. Obsequies took place from the family residence on Queen St. on Monday at 2, his body having arrived via Galt on Sunday. Not until the arrival was it known what was the cause of his death, when the medical certificate attached proved it to be uremia. He had been threatened with this in bygone years. He leaves his wife and four children, Alfred, Annie Lee, Douglas. Helen; sisters, Mrs. Douglas Sorby, Mrs. Ireland, Miss Mabel and Miss Ethel. The cortege after the ceremony at the home, in which Rev. J. A. Stewart and Rev. J. D. Morrow of Toronto took part, winded its way to the last resting place in the little cemetery of the Howitt Memorial Church in Puslinch, passing the old homestead, where he had spent his happy boyhood. Among the mourners present were Mr. and Mrs. J. Wesley Parks, Mr. and Mrs. William Hortop, Mr. and Mrs. John Blatchford and Miss McIntosh. The cortege was met at the place of burial by a large concourse of people - friends and acquaintances from Guelph, Toronto, Morriston and the surrounding country. Pallbearers: Dr. H. T. Roberts of Guelph; Dr. R. J. Lockhart of Hespeler; J. W. Parks, William Hortop, James McIntosh and John McIntosh. Others in attendance were Rev. A. Hamilton and Rev. C. W. Cook of Hespeler; Dr. Henry Howitt and Dr. H. Orton Howitt of Guelph; James Anderson of Puslinch, uncle of Dr. Howitt; William Ireland of Puslinch; William Derby of Paisley Block; Dr. McKinley, Dr. R. Charlton and Dr. Henderson of Hespeler.
