The funeral of the late Joseph P Fahnlender, aged 58, who died at his home at 420 Oak street at 6 o'clock yesterday morning, will be held from St. Michael's church on Monday morning at 9 o'clock, the procession leaving the home at 8 a.m. Mr. Fahnlender was the oldest newspaper man from point of service in North Dakota, and had worked at his trade in the job department of the Herald (3rd Street East, corner of Kittson avenue) until last October, when he was forced to cease because of illness with cancer of the throat. He bore his disease with wonderful fortitude, and his strong constitution allowed him to remain conscious until death overtook him.

    ____________________________

The newspaper and printing career of Mr. Fahnlender is one that has been closely identified with the development of the industry in the northwest. Among other features of his work was the establishment of the first newspaper published in the city of Devils Lake, where he resided a number of years ago.

Mr. Fahnlender also operated a newspaper plant in Brainerd, Minnesota; a job plant at St. Cloud, Minnesota; and he was employed at Crookston, Fargo, Wahpeton, Cando and numerous other cities and towns in this state and in Minnesota.

Mr. Fahnlender was also a conscientious worker, and a capable man in his trade. He served in many important capacities during his printing career, and acquitted himself creditably.

The ups and downs of the northwest of the early days, of course, had their effects upon the men who were pioneering -- and Joe prospered and suffered from time to time -- in about the same proportion as others who were engaged in the early work of building up the northwest.

Aged 58 years at the time of his death, Mr. Fahnlender had been engaged in the printing work from the time he was 15 years old -- or over a period of forty-three years. Mr. Fahnlender was born in St. Clémento [St. Clements], Canada, in 1856. He came to the United States with his parents in 1876.

His mother, three sisters and a brother survive him, in addition to his wife and two daughters, Gladys and Florence, and two sons, Eugene of Staples, Minn., and Edward of Moorhead, Minn. Mrs. Peter Wild of Osnabrock, and Mrs. J Marquart of Georgetown, Minn., and Mrs. M Hohnadel of Georgetown are the surviving sisters, and John Fahnlander of Georgetown, Minn., is the surviving brother. His aged mother also resides at Georgetown.
