HAMMERSLEY, ROBERT NIVEN

One of the older residents of Hespeler, early Tuesday or Wednesday morning, June 28 or 29^th 1927(differing reports), after an illness of several weeks. Born in Blenheim, Ontario, 82 years ago, he came to Puslinch Township with his parents, when he was but 4 years old. He resided there until some thirty- five years ago, when he moved into town. Several years ago, an accident disabled one leg and he had to go on crutches since. He has been ill several weeks. Survived by his wife and three daughters: Mrs. John Eltherington of Leamington; Mrs. Charles S. Garner of Brantford; Mrs. Maude Lothian, at home; one son, R. Nelson Hammersley of Galt; one sister, Mrs. Smith Evans of Puslinch; and three grandchildren. The funeral was held on Saturday afternoon at 2 from his residence on Queen St. to Hespeler Cemetery.

EVANS, SARAH SMITH (Nee Hammersley)

On Friday noon, August 5, 1927, one of the older residents of Puslinch Township, Mrs. Smith Evans, at the home of her son-in-law, Percy Evans on the 3^rd concession of Puslinch. Daughter of the late John and Mrs. Hammersley, she was born in Puslinch Township 80 years ago and had always lived there. Sixty years ago, she married Smith Evans, who predeceased her in 1919. With her death, the last of the pioneer Hammersley family has passed away, her brother, Robert Hammersley having died a few weeks ago. Surviving are five children: Agnes (Mrs. Oswald Sorby) of Guelph; Mrs. James Buchanan of Erin; Mrs. Percy Evans of Puslinch; Albert, Canadian National Railway agent of Beaverton; and William of Bridgeburg. Mrs. Evans was a lifelong member of Memorial Church and a neighbour beloved by all who knew her. The largely attended funeral was held on Sunday afternoon. Rev. H. L. Merner officiated, with interment in Hespeler Cemetery.

BLACK, ISABELLA (Nee Hammersley)

Another old resident, on Tuesday morning, December 5, 1922, Mrs. Thomas W. Black passed to her reward, at the home of her son, Vardon Black of Queen St. E. in Hespeler, after an illness of about a week, death being due to pneumonia. She was born on the 3^rd concession in Puslinch Township nearly 73 years ago. She, her husband and family had resided in Galt for some years. On the death of her husband some twenty-five years ago, she moved to Hespeler from Galt and made her home with her son. In that quarter century, she has made many friends. Until the summer, Mrs. Black was quite active but a fall broke a bone in her foot and since that time, she has not been able to get around. She was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church and in her younger days, took an active interest in church work. One son, Vardon, with whom she made her home, is left. Robert Hammersley is a brother. Mrs. Smith Evans of Puslinch and Mrs. Catharine Evans of Leamington are sisters. The funeral took place Thursday at 2: 30 from the residence of her son, Vardon. Rev. J. L. Small officiated. Interment will be at Mount View Cemetery in Galt, where her husband is buried.

She was a member of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church. Surviving is a brother, Nelson Hammersley of Galt; two sisters, Mrs. Maud Hunsperger of Vancouver; and Mary (Mrs. John Eltherington)of Leamington. Service at the Stager Funeral Home on Galt St. in Hespeler on Tuesday at 2. Interment was in Hespeler Cemetery.

HAMMERSLEY, ROBERT NELSON

At his residence, 27 Alexander Ave. in Galt, on Sunday, October 18, 1959, in his 78^th year. Father of Thelma (Mrs. Harry Kelly) of Guelph; Jean (Mrs. Gordon Evans) of Galt; and Brooks Hammersley of Galt. Also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Jack Eltherington of Leamington and Mrs. J. B. Hunsperger of Vancouver. A resident of Galt for close to fifty years, he was born in Puslinch. He moved to Hespeler in his early teens, where he worked for a number of years, before locating in Galt. Employed by the textile firm of Staufer and Dobbie prior to his retirement five years ago, he had been foreman and in later years a loom fixer. He was a member of the 25 year club. He married Maud Brooks in Hespeler about fifty-five years ago. She predeceased him in June of this year. An ardent baseball and hockey fan, he played ball in his earlier years in Hespeler. Mr. Hammersley was an adherent of Wesley United Church in Galt. Funeral service at Little's Funeral Home, 39 Grant Ave. N. in Galt on Wed., Oct. 21 at 2. Interment Mount Hope Cemetery.

EVANS, ROBERT HAMMERSLEY

Hundreds Paid Last Respects to Robert Evans of Puslinch

Following a fatal accident, from which he never regained consciousness, at his home in Puslinch on Monday morning, February 27^th 1922. Mr. Evans was still in the prime of life, he being in his 52^nd year(another report states 49 years), a well known farmer of Puslinch Township. About 11 a. m., he was hit on the head, fracturing his skull, from which he died an hour or so afterwards (another report says four hours later). The tree they were chopping lodged in another and in cutting the second, it fell before he could get out of the way. He apparently noticed the dangerous predicament he was in, as he called to his hired man to run out of danger an instant before the accident happened. The ice-covered ground prevented Mr. Evans from getting from under the heavy object. Harry Ehrhardt and John Eggert, two neighbours were called to the assistance of the injured man and he was rushed to his home. Dr. Hutchison was called but found that nothing could be done. He passed away about 2 o'clock. Mr. Evans was born in Puslinch, eldest son of Sarah and the late Smith Evans. He was unmarried and had lived all his life on the homestead with his aged mother and one sister. He leaves his mother; three sisters, Mrs. Oswald Sorby of Guelph, who is at present holidaying in Florida; Mrs. James Buchanan of Fergus; and Isabel "Bella", at home; two brothers, Albert of Beaverton; and William of Guelph. His father predeceased him three years ago. Interment at Hespeler on Thursday at 3: 30. The funeral service at his late residence, lot 4, concession 4, Puslinch Township at 2: 30 on March 2, conducted by Rev. Greene of Freelton and Rev. James of Howitt Memorial Methodist Church, at which church Mr. Evans had been, since childhood, a regular attendant, was largely attended. Hundreds of his friends from far and near came to show the high esteem in which he was held in the community and to pay their respect to one, who had endeared himself to all as a worthy citizen and a kindly neighbour. There were many beautiful floral tributes. Pallbearers: Edwin Sault, Gordon Sault, Kenneth Evans, Leonard Evans, Thomas Aitken and Elias Holm. Like his father, Smith Evans, he was reared and died on the Evans homestead and with the exception of seven years, which he spent in ranching in Alberta, he has lived at home.
