Notes:
One of the now very few remaining old pioneers of Puslinch, Mrs. Charles Barrett, of the 2"d concession, Puslinch, on Wednesday, October 9, 1895, at the age of 75 and 6 months. She was born in the county of Mayo, Ireland, in April 1820 and came to Puslinch with her parents, who settled on the 2nd concession in 1831. Although her father, the late John Barrett, had more of the world's goods than many of the early settlers, yet she was never backward in sharing in the hardships that pioneer life involved. On the 7th February 1847, she was married in Hamilton to her much respected surviving husband, Charles Barrett, whence they removed in 1854 to the 2nd concession of Puslinch, where they have ever since resided. She was a staunch and consistent member of the Roman Catholic Church but her friends were numerous amongst those of all denominations, as she was tolerant wherever toleration was merited and kind and charitable to all. Whilst ever being ready to assist those who needed a helping hand and act the part of the good Samaritan, her chief pleasure seemed to consist in wisely directing and controlling the interests of her family and home and no doubt, the high social and responsible position held by certain members of her family today is due to careful and intelligent parental training dispensed by a father and a mother, whose preference ever lay in a faithful performance of duty. The family are: Agnes, living at home; Dr. John K. Barrett of Winnipeg, Inspector of Inland Revenue for Manitoba and the Northwest provinces; Robert and Peter, living in Texas; and Charles, managing the homestead. The boys made the long journey home to pay the last tribute of respect to their beloved parent. Her illness of a few months, was born with Christian resignation and she passed to her reward without much bodily pain. The funeral on Friday, the 11th to the Roman Catholic Cemetery in Hespeler at 9, notwithstanding the inclemency of the day, was the largest ever seen in the township or in Hespeler.

Biography of Barett, John K. (John Kelly), 1850-ca. 1921
Born in 1850, John Kelly Barrett was superintendent and inspector of separate schools in Ontario and a federal civil servant who held several posts with Inland Revenue, including that of inspector of weights and measures in Winnipeg. He was also the director and managing editor of the English-language Catholic publication The Northwest Review. Barrett was the Catholic ratepayer of Winnipeg who refused to pay the municipal tax for the support of the public schools of the city, alleging that, as a Roman Catholic, his constitutional rights, as outlined in section. 22 of the Manitoba Act, were being violated as a result of the Public Schools Act of 1890. The City of Winnipeg brought the case to court. With the support of the federal government, Barrett's case went all the way to the Privy Council and ultimately resulted in a negotiated settlement between the federal and provincial governments known as the Laurier-Greenway compromise. Barrett died about 1921.
