Notes:
John Master, "the eldest son of Isaac and Mary (Clemens) Master, was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania, March 7th, 1810. He came to Canada with his parents when nine years of age. On October 30th, 1830, he was married to Nancy Stauffer who was born August 4th, 1811, and died May 13th, 1843. After her decease he was married to Catharine Reichert, April 30th, 1844. She was born in this county, May 15th, 1811. After his marriage he resided on a farm near that of his father's where he remained several years. Being persuaded by some parties to quit the life of an husbandman and begin that of an inn-keeper, he left the farm now in possession of James Cowan and moved to Dundas where he took possession of the old hotel known as 'Peter Bomberger's', a great resort for travellers from all parts of the northern and western counties. But being brought up to the business of agriculture he soon became so disgusted with the life of 'innkeeping' that after the short stay of six months he disposed of his business in Dundas and returned to Waterloo, the county of his adoption. After his return he settled in Wilmot Township, several miles west of New Dundee, on the farm now in possession of John Master, his grandson. From here he moved to Plattsville, Oxford County, where he resided until 1891, thence to Berlin where he and his aged partner are spending the evening of their lives with their son Isaac, ex-M. P. P. Here they have a pleasant home and the loving care of all. To him and his first wife was born a family of six children"

ELLIS, MARY (Nee Masters)
On May 7, h 1909 at 28 Kenilworth Crescent in East Toronto, aged 89 years, 2 days. Widow of Edward Ellis. Mrs. Ellis was well known in Hespeler and the immediate surrounding country. She and her husband moved onto their bush farm in Puslinch, now owned by John Ross, away back in the 1840's and for over forty years, experienced the hardships of pioneer life. But reverses and difficulties were met by this good lady with Christian cheerfulness, fortitude and patience, which were prominent qualities in her makeup. She was a staunch and devoted member of the Methodist Church and always did whatever lay in her powerto advance its interests, both financially and otherwise. When the Ellis Church was being built back in the 1850's on a corner of the Ellis farm, which was freely given for that purpose, she was actively giving a helping hand and boarded gratuitously several of the workmen engaged in the work on the little stone church by the Lake. The Ellis Church is a standing monument to her memory and that of other well known settlers in that locality, who have since passed to their reward. After disposing of their Puslinch home, Mr. and Mrs. Ellis lived retired for a number of years in a comfortable home near St. George. Mrs. Ellis was foster-mother of Mrs. Mills, wife of Rev. William Mills, who was pastor of the Hespeler Methodist Church back in the 1880's and is now residing in Toronto. Many of the older Hespeler citizens will remember Mrs. Ellis since that time. Self-sacrificing and charitable, hers was a life of real usefulness. On Saturday, May 8th, her body was conveyed by G. T. R. to St. George and interred beside her husband in that beautiful cemetery. A large gathering of old friends and acquaintances attended, amongst them, Mr. and Mrs. Knowles from Hespeler.
-Daughter of Isaac Masters and Mary Clemens.

Notes:
Isaac Master, "the eldest son, was born March 19th, 1835. His boyhood days were spent on his father's farm. His early opportunity for the acquisition of learning being very limited, his attainments in this particular were confined to the common branches of an education taught in our county schools, limited to those months in the winter when the duties on the farm were not so pressing. He, however, acquired the habit of improving every leisure moment during the more busy season of the year, and though the duties of farm life kept him from school, it did not keep him from his books. After arriving at the age of maturity he chose farming as the calling of his life and settled several miles west of New Dundee on the farm now in possession of his son. Here he resided until October, 1891, when he moved to Berlin. Mr. Master having his mind well schooled and disciplined in the knowledge of all our political institutions in the varied systems which prevail under the constitutions and legislation of the different provinces of our Dominion, early identified himself with the Liberal or Reform party and has up to the present remained faithful to the noble principles advocated by the Liberal Government. At the general Convention held at Doon some time in February, 1877, for the purpose of selecting a candidate to represent the S. R. of the county of Waterloo in the provincial government, Mr. Master was unanimously chosen as the standard bearer of the Reform party and on March 5th, 1877, he was elected member of the Provincial Parliament by a handsome majority. He was the representative in the Local House for the S. R. of this county until October, 1891, when he was appointed registrar for the county of Waterloo. He is married to Lydia Ann, daughter of Samuel and Nancy (Ziegler) Fried. To them was born a family of ten children"

ISAAK MASTER
The Registrar of Waterloo County died on Thursday morning at 11a.m. at his residence on Ahrens Street. His health had not been satisfactory for several years, and for 2 months, he had been seriously ill and wasn't able to leave the house. His burial took place on Saturday in Blenheim, after a funeral service had been held in Trinity Church.
The deceased was born on March 19, 1835 in Wilmot, where he attended a country school, and acquired more than satisfactory education through diligent application to his books. He was interested in public works and took part in politics. He was a member of the Liberal party. After he had served his township for several years as a councillor and deputy reeve, he was elected the representative for South Waterloo to the provincial legislature in 1877 and an additional 2 times. In October 1893, he was named Registrar and moved to Berlin. Up until then, he had lived on his farm, west of New Dundee. He was a friendly, agreeable man, and had many friends.

Notes:
Levi Master, "was born in Waterloo County, near New Dundee, Ontario, February 8th, 1841. His days of youth were spent with his father on the farm. When a mere lad he became animated with a thirst for learning. But the schools of his time were of an inferior kind and afforded none of the facilities now attainable in acquiring the rudiments of education. Schools then were kept open only a few months during the winter. Consequently he received at school nothing but the ordinary instruction which farmers' sons of that period usually received. The information thus received laid the foundation of a good education. By the time he attained the age of seventeen or eighteen years he passed his examination as a public school teacher. He followed teaching for a number of years. Later he entered the ministry of the M. E. Church. In 1869 he moved to Michigan where he continued to labor for his Master in the M. E. Church with great diligence and zeal. At present he is presiding elder of the church of his choice. His home is in Kalamazoo, Michigan. On January 1st, 1861, he was married to Maria Fried who was born January 24th, 1840. To them was born a family of five children"

Demise of Mrs. Thomas - a long-time resident of Ayr in the person of Mrs. Samuel J. Thomas passed away Sunday night or early Monday morning. She had been ailing from heart trouble for some time, but was feeling better Sunday night. In the morning it was found that the vital spark had fled its tenement of clay during the still hours of the night. Mrs. Thomas, whose maiden name was Eliza Snyder, was in her 66th year. She was born in Blenheim, near Plattsville, and had spent practically all her life in this vicinity. She married in 1871 and was predeceased by her husband some six years. A son, Geo. H. Thomas of Detroit, survives. The deceased also has two brothers and three sisters residing in Manitoba. Mrs. Thomas was a Methodist and an active member of the local church, taking a prominent part in everything pertaining to the welfare of that body. The funeral took place yesterday from her late residence, St. Andrews Ave., the services being conducted by Rev. Mr. Hiscock ? the pallbearers were Messrs. C? George, John Anderson, A. Anderson, C. My Dear Editor:
I am enclosing postal order for subscription to Canadian Nurse. Through pressure of work. I have delayed doing so; consequently, am asking for the October number, as my renewal was not in time to receive it. Our Canadian Nurse is doing excellent work. I am hoping they will start a vigorous campaign for the opening up of post-graduate courses in our Canadian city hospitals, and thus save thousands of nurses to Canada. I think if the C.N.A. made that an objective it could be accomplished, and would be of incalculable benefit to the Canadian nursing profession.
Very truly yours,
Elsie Master.

Nurse Elsie Master wrote a letter published June 7 1916 in the Berlin News Record.
"In taking the name of Kitchener, great honour would be done to our city in memory of the splendid man whom all the world delights to honour," she wrote.
"The name of Kitchener would be a heritage to the citizens of Berlin in the generations to come, and will always be typical of splendid patriotism, tremendous energy, great attainments, and a sense of unswerving honour and rectitude.
"The name would be one no citizen need blush for, and one our country and Empire would recognize as standing out in bold contrast to all that is implied in our present name of Berlin."

Notes:
Isaac M. Levan B.A., "the eldest, was born June 30th, 1857. His boyhood days were spent in attending the Berlin Central and High Schools. (Do you remember when all but two of the pupils had to remain in after hours for not making over 50% on their history papers? Who was he that caused the pupils to laugh?) When well advanced in his "teens" he entered the Toronto University and after graduating and receiving the degree of B.A. he was engaged in the St. Marys High School where he taught with great success. From St. Marys, Ontario, he went to Owen Sound, Ontario, where he was principal of the High School until September, 1893, when he received the appointment as vice-principal of the school of Pedagogy of the Toronto University which honorable position he still holds. It is yet too soon to write a biography that will do justice to Mr. Levan for he is yet a young man and has not reached the meridian of his powers. Though he has already achieved much--more than enough to satisfy the ambition of most scholars and thinkers-- what he has done must be accepted, not as the measure of his usefulness, but merely as a promise of what he is yet to do. As an instructor he is unsurpassed, never failing to interest the students with practical and valuable ideas. His lectures which are always so abundant in valuable information, are partly the fruit of his own fertile and original mind, and partly the result of patient and extensive research. He always has something new and striking to say on every subject upon which he lectures. On July 20th, 1887, he was united in matrimony with Emma Sanderson. They reside in Toronto, No. 66 Yorkville Ave."
