    COBER, NANCY LOUISA (Nee Panabaker)

Mrs. J. N. Cober, at her home on Friday evening, April 20, 1923. She had been ailing for some weeks with an incurable trouble and her death was not unexpected. She was born in Waterloo Township over 72 years ago, the daughter of the late David Panabaker. She has been a resident of Hespeler and vicinity all her life and in her death, Hespeler mourns one of her oldest residents. She has made her life felt in the community, for she was not only actively connected with church work, being a lifelong member of the Methodist Church but she was interested herself in all relief work of the town and was president of the Mother's Club. Many the tempting dishes that found their way to the sick were from Mrs. Cober's own home. She was a neighbour unto those in need. Just ten years ago, almost to the day, her husband died quite suddenly. The survivors are: Mrs. Milton Ward of Brandon; Mrs. John D. Murdoch of Zealandia; Mrs. Russell Gordon of Kindersley; Mrs. Joseph R. Darwen of Hespeler; Mrs. Rev. J. D. Taylor of Galt; Albert H. of Hespeler; sisters and brothers, Mrs. S. Chambers of Ethel; Mrs. Catharine Bechtel of Cabri, SK; Miss Susannah Panabaker of Hespeler; Miss Lizzie Panabaker of Cabri; Aaron W. Panabaker, Levi, Abraham A. and C. A., all of Hespeler; Arnold of Winnipeg. The funeral, which was held on Monday afternoon, was very largely attended. The services were conducted by Rev. W. G. Buell and Rev. W. H. Harvey of Waterloo. Mrs. C. H. Bleich sang. She was borne to her last resting place in Hespeler Cemetery by six nephews: David, George, John, Frank and James Panabaker; and Vernon Cober.

-Information from the death certificate: Of Hungerford Rd. in Hespeler. Born in Waterloo Township on January 2, 1851, daughter of David Panabaker and Catherine Warner.

Falls 40 Feet And Dies At Hospital - Former Hespeler Mayor, D.N. Panabaker, Prominent in Public Life

Hespeler - D.N. Panabaker, 70, died in hospital at Galt on Thursday of injuries received when he fell forty feet to the ground from a lookout platform of the Pioneers Memorial Tower near Doon. Chief Coroner W.A. Woolner said there will be no inquest. Panabaker, who served as Mayor of Hespeler for many years, was conscious when found but said later he could not explain how the accident occurred. Panabaker was the president of the Waterloo Historical Society, responsible for erection of the Memorial Tower.

For many years identified with the Canadian woolen industry as manager of the Hespeler division, Dominion Woolens and Worsteds Ltd., he was known as an authority in Canadian Woolen circles. Born n Waterloo Township 70 years ago, serving on the town council Hespeler, of Pennsylvania Dutch stock, he became one of the most reliable authorities on the early history of the Pennsylvania Dutch settlers in this country. It was through his efforts that the Memorial Tower from which he fell was erected to the memory of the county's early pioneers.

He was prominent in civic affairs of Hespeler and the county for many years serving on the town council and later on the county council as reeve. He was later elected warden of the county. He was an active member of the United Church. He was a past president of the waterloo County Children's aid Society and also of the Ontario Children's Aid Society. He was also a past president of the Waterloo County Canadian Club.

His entire life was spent in Hespeler where he entered the employ of the R. Forbes Woolen Company as a youth, rising to manager of the concern which later became a division of the Dominion Woolens and Worsteds Ltd. He retired from active connection with the firm about ten years ago. In later years he had been identified with the Hespeler Felt Company.

Besides his wife he is survived by three sons, Wilbur of Saskatchewan, Frank of Hamilton, distinguished Canadian landscape painter, and Reeve James Panabaker of Hespeler. Four brothers, Levi and C.A. of Hespeler, Arnold of Blair and Ephraim in the West, with three sisters, the Misses Susan and Elizabeth of Hespeler and Mrs. Chambers of Atwood, also survive.

KRIBS, LOUIS P., journalist, publisher, and author; b. 27 Feb. 1857 in Hespeler (Cambridge), Upper Canada, son of Ludwig (Lewis) Kribs, carpenter, and Elizabeth Pannebecker; m. 1880 Millie Cliff, and they adopted six children; d. 24 March 1898 in Ottawa.

Educated in Hespeler, Louis P. Kribs worked as a youth in the "lumber camps north of Barrie." In the late 1870s he entered journalism as a reporter for the Toronto Globe but soon moved to Barrie to become editor of the Northern Advance. Later he became editor and proprietor of the Bruce Herald in Walkerton. He sold that paper in 1884 and returned to Toronto to join the News under the innovative Edmund Ernest Sheppard*, first as city editor and then, using the pseudonym Henry Pica, as the author of a popular series of articles featuring commentary on events of the day. According to American critic Walter Blackburn Harte, Kribs "did the best work of his life in his struggle to make a success of the News." He left the News and went to Ottawa as parliamentary correspondent for the Toronto Daily Mail for one session, but after that journal renounced the policies of the Conservative government [see Christopher William Bunting], he resigned and edited the Daily Standard in Toronto, a campaign journal established by the Conservatives during the general election of 1887. Kribs next worked for the Toronto World but when the Conservative Empire was founded later in 1887, he became its news editor and afterwards its Ottawa correspondent. He was elected president of the Parliamentary Press Gallery in 1891.

The immensely likeable Kribs was described by newspaperman Hector Willoughby Charlesworth* as a "bulky blonde figure who looked like a German comedian and was nick-named 'The Crown Prince.'" A gifted oboe player, he often whiled away late hours at the Empire, Charlesworth recounted, in "melancholy duets" with James Watson Curran on trombone. His flair for fun, hoaxes, and provocation had earlier buttressed Sheppard's efforts to revitalize the News, but with mixed results. Kribs's false announcement in 1885 that Sir John A. Macdonald had retired caused excitement; however, his unfortunate repetition in print that year of a story that the 65th Battalion of Montreal had shirked its duty in the North-West rebellion led to a libel suit against Sheppard. Four years later, after he had left the News, his dismissal at a municipal campaign meeting in Toronto of John Ross Robertson*'s Evening Telegram as a "ratsheet" almost caused a riot. Though he had shared the social radicalism of William Wallace* and fellow newsmen Thomas Phillips Thompson* and Alexander Whyte Wright* in the 1880s, Kribs was a persistent Conservative in politics. John Stephen Willison* of the Globe, who endured Kribs's gibes in Ottawa at the time of the affair concerning Thomas McGreevy in 1891, charitably recalled Kribs as "devoted to 'the party,' belligerent when his idols were defamed, but so abounding in human kindness that his partisan ferocity had the flavour of comedy." During the federal election campaign of 1891, Macdonald's last, Kribs reputedly coined the party slogan "The Old Man, the Old Policy and the Old Flag."

Like most members of the journalistic fraternity of central Canada, Kribs was an outspoken critic of temperance. In 1892, when the royal commission on the liquor traffic in Canada was appointed, he resigned from the Empire to represent the brewing and distilling interests. He presented a hard-hitting brief to the commission, replete with facts and figures drawn from all over Canada and the United States, to show that "drunkenness is greater, crime is greater, infractions of the law are more numerous, while general prosperity is less under a prohibitive than under a license law." In 1894 he produced a summary of the commission's Report for the Canadian Brewers' and Distillers' Association. As well, Kribs edited the Advocate (Toronto), a journal that represented those interests during the two years that it existed (1894-95).

Although he was an Orangeman, Kribs took up his pen in 1895 in support of the Roman Catholic minority of Manitoba, whose loss of school rights had become a burning national issue [see D'Alton McCarthy]. In a vigorous and able pamphlet he argued that the Canadian constitution embodied compacts guaranteeing the rights of minorities. Parliament's failure to uphold the compact in the case of the Catholics in Manitoba would, in his view, be a "triumph of expediency over right," "a despicable yielding up of the weak to the strong," and contrary to "every rule of British fair play." Kribs thus took high constitutional and moral ground. Archbishop Adélard Langevin* of St Boniface mentioned his pamphlet when he rebuked Liberal leader Wilfrid Laurier*, who opposed federal remedial legislation, for not speaking out in support of the minority.
Kribs was ailing for the last few years of his life, evidently from the effects of typhoid fever, and he resided quietly in Weston (Toronto). He nevertheless took an active part in the Conservative election campaign of 1896. He died during a visit to Ottawa two years later and was buried in Hespeler.

Kribs had been prominent as a journalist, particularly in Ontario, and, although he held strong opinions politically, he was highly popular with journalists of all shades of opinion. At his death there were many tributes to both his ability and his genial and benevolent nature. The Globe commented: "The blues used to take wings at the sight of his burly frame and the sound of his friendly voice and hearty laugh. As a writer he was full of force and rollicking humor, but although he might hit an opponent hard and overwhelm him with harmless fun, there was never a suspicion of vemon in his invective or in his mirth. Generous, manly, clear and vigorous in intellect, sound in heart, his death is, in no merely conventional sense, a loss to the community."
    Lovell Clark

Kribs is the author of Report of Louis P. Kribs in connection with the investigation held by the Canadian royal commission on the liquor traffic (Toronto, 1894) and The Manitoba school question considered historically, legally and controversially (Toronto, 1895).

    DEATH OF LOUIS P. KRIBS.

Ottawa, March 24.- (Special.) - Profound regret is felt in Parliamentary and newspaper circles at the untimely death of Louis P. Kribs, the well-known journalist. Mr. Kribs arrived in Ottawa just a fort night ago, and the day after his arrival was attacked with hemorrhage of the lungs. His condition has varied considerably since then, but this morning he was noticed to be gradually sinking. When death came he was attended by his wife and brother, Mr. W. A. Kribs, M.L.A.

The remains were conveyed to Hespeler by the C.P.R. train to-night, and the funeral will take place in that village on Saturday evening.

There was a representative gathering of M.P.'s and newspaperer men at the station to pay their last tribute of respect to one of the best fellows who ever breathed. The floral offerings from Ottawa friends were numerous, chief among them being a beautiful wreath from Mr. Kribs' old confreres in the gallery.

    Sketch of His Career.

Louls P. Kribs was born, at Hespeler, Ont., Fet. 27, 1857. He came from Pennsyivania Dutch stock, his father having emigrated from the "Brotherly Love" State and settled at Hespeler, where he started a milling business in connection with farming. There are several sons in the family, and W. A. Kribs, the Conservative member- elect for South Waterloo, is a brother of deceased.

About 25 years ago L. P. Kribs came down from the lumber camps north of Barrle to "look for a job" in Toronto. He went to The Globe office, and met the late Hon. George Brown, who looked him over think Mr. Kribs did more for the Conservative party in that period than any other one man.

Afterward Mr. Kribs filled responsible positions on The World.

When The Empire was started Mr. Kribs became news editor, but left that position in 1892 to represent the brewers and distillers before the Royal Commission which was appointed to investigate and report as to the desirability of a prohibitory law, his office being to show that prohibition was not desirable.

Later on Mr. Kribs started The Advocate, and when, after about two years, that weekly ceased publication, Mr. Kribs, whose health had become impaired, retired to a private life at Weston, where he has remained for several years. About a year ago he was attacked by a hemorrhage of the stomach, and his life was despaired of, but his vigorous constitution rallied. He was never strong afterwards, however, and his late trip to Ottawa brought on a recurrence which terminated in death.

Among those who worked with him deceased was held in the highest esteem. His was a most benevolent, nature, and many a "poor body" and street walf has been comforted by his unostentatious charity.

    Notes:

William Abram Kribs was born in Hespeler on February 27, 1859 the son of Lewis Kribs and Elizabeth Pannabaker. He took over the operation of the Holm flour mills, located two miles north of Hespeler, from his father in 1899 and managed them until 1907. Continuing his father's lumber and sawmill business, he built a new plant on Avenue Road in Hespeler, now Guelph Ave., in 1902. As a general contractor, Mr. Kribs was responsible for the construction of the new Kress Hotel in Preston and the C. Turnbull & Co. Textile mill in Galt. His lumber business was continued until 1914 supplying material for local factories. During World War I Mr. Kribs' company designed special machinery for the manufacture of shell boxes. In 1917 the lumber business was discontinued and machinery was installed for the manufacture of warehouse trucks and, a short time later, for the manufacture of "Simplicity" washing machines. The business was incorporated under the name W. A. Kribs Company Limited in 1919. Mr. Kribs retired from the business in 1925. In addition to his business interests, Mr. Kribs was a member of the Hespeler Public Library Board for eighteen years and served as the warden of Waterloo County in 1895. On March 19, 1898, he was elected to the Provincial Legislature representing Waterloo South. He won re-election on May 29, 1902 and remained in the House until 1905. He also served on Hespeler council in 1886 and 1887, as Hespeler's reeve from 1888 to 1896 and as Hespeler's mayor in 1914 and 1915. Mr. Kribs also acted as sheriff of Waterloo County from 1926 to 1934. He died in Hespeler on October 27, 1943 and is buried in New Hope Cemetery. Kribs St. perpetuates the memory of both Mr. Kribs and his father Lewis Kribs.

Very happy in the land of his forefathers, he later became state dairy inspector and resided in Wawa until his death in April, 1953. In 1935 I accompanied him to his home presumably for a vacation. As I took my first trip down the beautiful Susquehanna Trail into the fertile fields of Lancaster, Oxford and Delaware counties, I was thrilled again and again with the kinship of that part of Pennsylvania to our own beautiful Waterloo County. I could almost feel the challenge the northward journey must have presented to those first early settlers as they saw the possibility of clearing and developing a new land so like their own had once been. Thus it did not seem strange that my vacation should become a three-year sojourn in a land which became very dear to me as I found myself happy and contented in a way of life so similar to that of my own home. Many times since then I have travelled the Susquehanna Trail, never tiring of its beauty and always feeling strongly the link between the past and the present and its relation to my own life.

    Notes:

David Rife from the Sunny Hill Farm and George C. Hammett were the milk peddlers in my early days. And anyone who has seen the amount of washing and scalding being done at Sunny Hill and the clean manner in which milk was there handled and all utensils kept, will realize the effort there made to give Hespeler people good milk. The same at Hammett's I have no doubt although I was never there myself.

    Notes:

In 1906 my father, William Rife, was the cause for much concern when he suffered a series of unfortunate accidents. Early in the summer, he was crushed between a load of hay and the barn door. A short time later as he stood in the doorway watching a mother hen and her baby chicks after bringing in a pail of water he was struck by lightning. Grandmother tells of how she quickly threw the pail of water on dad which she has always felt saved his life, though he remained unconscious for several hours. When he recuperated enough to travel he set out by train to visit his sister in Edmonton. On the way the train was involved in a serious wreck which claimed the lives of fourteen people. Dad escaped with a bad shaking- up. On his return to Hespeler, he was gored by a bull, requiring thirty-six stitches to close his wound. His experiences were printed in newspapers as far away as Chicago under the heading, "He Bears Charmed Life."

Memorable Manitobans: George Waldron Prout (1878-c1980)

    Financial agent, MLA (1916-1920).

Born in Barbados on 5 June 1878, one of ten children of school teachers Joseph Benjamin Prout (1852-1940) and Mary Trotman Hutchinson (1854-1920), he was educated privately and emigrated to Manitoba in 1897, where he worked as a financial agent at Selkirk.

He stood for election in the provincial election of 1914, being defeated by Walter Humphries Montague, by three votes. In 1915, he was elected as a Liberal representative for the constituency of Kildonan-St. Andrews. Given that his mother was identified in the 1911 Canadian census as being of "Negro" ancestry, this would potentially make him the first Black MLA in Manitoba history. He ran in the 1920 and 1927 general elections but was defeated each time.

He was married twice, first on 18 April 1906 to Alice Maude Cober (1874-1907) with whom he had a daughter, Alice Marion Prout (1907-2010), and second on 2 September 1914 to Emma Evans McKinley (1882-1982), daughter of John DeWitt H. McKinley of Dresden, Ohio. They had a son, George Waldron Prout (1915-1915).

By the mid-1930s, he was living at Toronto, Ontario and working as a financial agent. Separated from his wife and daughter in 1937, and formally divorced in 1939, he lived at Toronto for the remainder of his life, possibly serving as a senior executive at Canada Packers.

He died at Toronto, Ontario around 1980.

    Notes:

Frank Panabaker had his first show at the Preston Springs Hotel in 1927. From that time, he was a fully self-supporting professional artist. With his wife Katherine's support and able assistance, more exhibitions followed across southern Ontario. Several wealthy sponsors provided a steady, albeit small income in exchange for paintings which carried the young couple through the difficult depression years.

His artistic career was launched one summer when the artist McGillivray Knowles arrived in town to teach a sketching class. Frank's father, impressed by his son's early interest and talent in drawing, suggested that the 16 year-old might like to join the class, rather than push heavy carts through the steaming woolen mill.
