Passed From Life on Monday at St. Jacobs

Residents of Elmira, St. Jacobs and district will be distressed to learn that Wilfrid Lloyd Welker died at his father's home in St. Jacobs, on Monday, April 25th, inst. He was a capable and popular young man. He was a son of Mr. F. E. Welker of St. Jacobs and was born in Wallace Township. When he was seven years of age his father purchased a mercantile business and moved to St. Jacobs. Wilfrid attended the public school there and completed his education at the K-W Collegiate Institute. Afterward he entered the employ of a bank and remained with it until 1915, when he enlisted with the 200th Toronto Battalion for service overseas. He served three years, of which one and a half years were at the front in France. He was once wounded but remained with the C.E.F. until the armistice was signed. Before joining the army he had contracted a leakage of the heart from which he never recovered. Returning to Canada, he obtained a position in the Merchants Rubber Co.'s office at Kitchener. Later he was transferred to the stores department of the Elmira Rubber Co. Here he remained until May of 1920. He then returned to St. Jacobs to take a position in his father's store. About New Year's his heart began again to give him trouble, and and he became seriously ill. Five weeks ago he was conveyed to the K.-W. Hospital, where he remained two weeks. He was brought home three weeks ago and gradually became weaker, until death ended his sufferings on Monday. He was aged 22 years, 9 months and 22 days. His father, his stepmother and two stepbrothers, aged 7 and 5 respectively, survive and mourn his untimely death. Wilfrid was a lover of outdoor and indoor sports and played hockey for a considerable time with the Elmira club. He was deservedly popular among his chums and all who knew him. His funeral was held this (Thursday) afternoon, at 2 o'clock, from the family residence at St. Jacobs to Calvary Evangelical Church for service, with burial following at the Evangelical Cemetery. The early death of this estimable young man has called forth many sincere expressions of regret and sympathy for his bereaved father and family.
