    Business:
In the year 1859 the grist mill was sold to Henry Aaron Bechtel who in the year 1875 sold it to Henry McNally, Angus McNally, Oliver Clemens and Moses Eschelman. This group converted the building into a woollen mill, and operated it for many years. A number of years later the machinery was sold to a North Bay concern. This building is at present utilized as an ice house, owned by F. I. Willson.

    _____________________

The first milling venture included a saw mill and grist mill,* built on the Blair-Galt Road by Daniel and Jacob Erb. Erected in 1808, it is now used as an ice house by Ford Willson of Preston. In 1859 the property was sold to Henry Aaron Bechtel who lived on the farm now owned by Jim Johannes. Here stands one of the oldest houses in the district. According to a record in the masonry it was built by the Bechtels in 1817. In 1875 the mill was transferred to Henry McNally, Angus McNally, Oliver Clemens and Moses Eschelman. This group converted the building into a woollen mill and continued in business until the manager, Angus McNally, died in April, 1903. Following that, a North Bay concern bought the establishment, then' moved all the machinery away. As a boy the writer had the pleasure of working in that woollen mill. I shall never forget the water wheel which ran all the machinery. It had timbers like those in a barn, and the steel axle upon which it was built weighed one and one-half tons. Farmers brought their w'ool to the mill and bought blankets, cloth, yarn and batting.

    DEATH OF WILLIAM HENRY CLEMENS.

At his residence on Oak street, Galt, on Sunday, Mr. Walter H. Clemens, son of the late Mr. Oliver Clemens, passed away in his forty-eighth year.

Mr. Clemens had been a sufferer for a long time, a victim of consumption, but an attack of hemorrhage absorbed all the strength that had been left by the insidious disease. He was born in the county of Waterloo and had spent all his life on his farm at Blair. Last spring he retired from business and lived in Preston, and it was only revently he went to Galt to reside.

Deceased had been twice married, and now leaves a widow and five children by his first wife and one by its second. A brother and sister also are left to mourn his loss, Mrs. Joseph Stauffer, of Galt, and Dr. G. H. Clemens, of Toronto.

The remains of the deceased gentleman were laid to rest in Blair cemetery Tuesday afternoon, the first part of the burial service being held Blair church.

Following graduation from high school he enrolled at Queen's University to study engineering. Mr. Stauffer's studies were interrupted by the First World War when he went overseas to serve with the Royal Naval Air Service. When the war ended, he returned to his studies and graduated, in 1920, as a metallurgist. Following graduation from Queen's University, Mr. Stauffer travelled to London, England for graduate courses in fuel technology at the Imperial College of Science. He then ventured into fuel technology, telephone, textile, stamping and financial interests, becoming an executive in all these fields, all the while accumulating a significant fortune which was used to establish the Joseph's. Stauffer Foundation. A quiet philanthropist, Mr. Stauffer contributed substantially to his alma mater and supported the Queen's University Endowment Fund and spear headed the Charles Poynton Memorial Award. He is reported to have sent cheques, anonymously at Christmas, to supplement the pensions of widows of the engineering professors who had taught him in his student days at Queen's University. Mr. Stauffer was a director of Stauffer-Dobbie Ltd., of Newlands & Co. and of Galt Metal Industries and was a member of the Royal Canadian Military Institute. He died in Toronto on June 16, 1978 and is buried in the Mausoleum in Mount View Cemetery."
