    SOLOMON COBER MARK 94TH BIRTHDAY

One of the towns oldest residents and a member of one of Puslinch Township's pioneer families, Solomon Cober on Wednesday quietly celebrated the 94th anniversary of his birth. He was the Son of Mr. & Mrs. Jacob Cober, who came to Puslinch Township from Pennsylvania shortly after the turn of the century.

Mr. Cober was born in Puslinch Township and with the exception of a few years spent in Huron County, had resided there most of his life.

Some 13 years ago he moved to Hespeler. He was married 52 years and he and Mrs. Cober marked their golden wedding anniversary 2 years ago. Mrs. Cober observed her 77th birthday in March. The Herald joins with his many friends in extending congratulations to Hespeler's grand old man, and wishes him continued health and happiness.

    HESPELER'S OLDEST MANN PASSES
SOLOMON COBER LIFE LONG RESIDENT OF DISTRICT PASSES IN 95TH YEAR

In the passing of Solomon Cober at his home here on Saturday afternoon, Hespeler's oldest man has gone to rest. Another link with the past has disappeared, for Mr. Cober had been a member of one of the Pioneer families of Puslinch Township and this district, and had spent almost his entire life within this community. The son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Cober who came to this district with the immigration of the early nineteenth century, the late Mr. Cober had watched his township and the nieghbouring towns grow from small Hamlets. During the long course of his lifetime he had made a very wide circle of friends and he held their respect and high esteem of all who knew him. Death came to Mr. Cober, in his 95th year, following an illness of some duration. Born in Puslinch Township, Mr Cober spent his youth there. He was married twice, his first wife being Miss Hanna Strome. Shortly after his marriage he moved to Huron Township where he farmed for several years. While he was residing there his wife passed away. In 1882 he was married at Zurich to Miss Elizabeth Pletch. Some time after that he returned to his native Puslinch and to farm, and fourteen years ago he and Mrs. Cober celebrated the golden anniversary of their wedding. The late Mr. Cober was a member of the Mennonite Church and had taken an active interest in the work of the church. Surviving are his wife in Hespeler and ten children. Mrs Cyrus Gingrich of Stevensville, David Cober of Kossuth, Simon Cober of Strussburg, Mrs. Jessie Winger of Wambleet, Mrs. Ralph Elston of Aberfoyle, Jacob Cober of Toronto, Mrs Isaiah Beer of Clearview, Mrs. Carl Baker of Kindesly, Sask., Wesley Cober of Toronto, and Mrs. Norman Rieck of Hespeler. Two sons, Henry and Edward Cober, predeceased their father. A brother Isaac Cober of Kossuth, and a sister Mrs. E. Gingrich of Akron, Ohio also survive. The funeral was held on Monday afternoon with a short service at his late residence. The funeral then moved to Union Cemetery, Puslinch where service was held prior to interment in Union Cemetery. Rev Ernest Swalm of Stayner and Rev Bert Shirk of Stevensville conducted the services. The pallbearers were Nelson Cober and Jeniah Cober of Staynor, Ben Winger and Earl Winger of Wainfleet Howard Cober of Toronto and Ervin Cober of Strasburg.

Kitchener to spend $730,000 to move heritage house, reuse as park washroom
NEWS 07: 04 PM by Catherine Thompson Waterloo Region Record

KITCHENER - Kitchener councillors voted unanimously Monday to spend $730,000 to move an 1861 heritage house and renovate it as a washroom and change room for the new South Kitchener District Park .

The stone cottage at 1664 Huron Rd. is right where soccer fields are planned in the new park at Huron and Fischer-Hallman roads. Drainage, grading and other issues make it difficult to move the soccer fields, so the house must either be moved or demolished.

While the price tag for moving the house seems high, said Coun. Scott Davey, "the reality is we're potentially saving $80,000 by reusing a heritage building ... I think this is as good a solution as we're ever going to get in a situation like this."

Reusing a heritage building is better for the environment, noted Coun. Yvonne Fernandes. "We're reusing materials that would go to a landfill if demolished," she said.
A heritage study determined the house was worth saving, since it is one of about a half-dozen stone houses built between 1850 and 1870 in a unique Scottish-English enclave in southwest Kitchener.

But councillors delayed a decision last fall when preliminary estimates suggested it would cost anywhere from $640,000 to almost $1 million to move the house, compared to $600,000 or $700,000 to build a new washroom. There was enough money in the park's budget to cover the cost of either option.

Firmer cost estimates presented on Monday say the house could be moved and renovated for about $730,000, while building a new structure would cost about $810,000, roughly $80,000 more than reusing the stone cottage.

Under the plan approved Monday, the stone cottage would be moved this year, but sit boarded up until 2022 when there is money in the budget to carry out the renovations to transform it into a washroom building. Crews would demolish modern additions and strip the interior this year, then move it to a concrete slab near a planned splash pad, playground and basketball courts.
The move would include the construction of a "haul road" along which the cottage will travel for about 200-300 metres.

The history of the cottage and the families that lived there would be explained in commemorative plaques, said Leon Bensason, the city's co-ordinator of cultural heritage. Having the building reused and recognized, in a well-used public space such as a park, is " a unique and good opportunity for the city," he said.

The Cober family, which lived in the house for many years, told council last September they weren't thrilled to see their old family home used as a public washroom. Coun. Kelly Galloway-Sealock voted in favour of the move, but asked staff to notify the Cober family before council the issue comes to council for ratification on Feb. 25.

The park is to be built in phases. The $10.3-million first phase of the park will include a splash pad and sports fields. The house will be repurposed as washrooms in the second phase, which is budgeted at $5.5 million and will also add trails and sports courts. Phase 3 will add a bike track and skateboard park for $3.2 million, with an indoor pool and arenas coming later.

On Jan 10, 1910, he was united in marriage to Sophia Snyder, who with a young daughter and son, his mother, a sister, and a brother survive to mourn his untimely departure. His father predeceased him only last May. Eight days previous to his death he had the misfortune to fall into the cylinder of a threshing machine which necessitated the amputation of 3 toes. Later tetanus or lockjaw developed, which was the cause of his death. Early in life he united with the Mennonite Church and has been an ardent worker in the Sunday school, being superintendent for three years past. He will indeed be missed much in the home, the church, and the community; but we trust in Him who doeth all things well. Funeral services were conducted at the Wanner Church on Sept. 18 by Oscar Burkholder and Benjamin Schantz. Text, Psa. 39: 4.

    George Bechtel

Farmer, animal lover, singer, husband, teacher, father, gardener, train enthusiast, transportation advocate, and cyclist, George passed from this life on May 3, 2019, aged 86 years.

He was the beloved husband of Grace (Schott), father of Trevor (Susan Hunsberger), and Gini (Tamara Shantz). He was the son of Nelson (1968) and Martha (Snyder, 1945) and stepson of Margaret (McTavish, 1985), and the brother of Janet (2013, Tom Inglis 1994), Mary Alma (2010, Charles Goodrich, 1992), Ruth, who survives (John Hess, 2007), and Dorothy (2010, Merlin Grove, 1962).

George spent the first part of his life working on his father's farm, established in 1816. His love of animals began here, particularly as he nursed his badly injured peacock Birdy back to health from a near fatal attack, and related to the dairy cattle with his characteristic gentleness. George taught at the secondary level and community college level for 29 years forming lifelong relationship with many students and colleagues. In retirement he volunteered at Doon Heritage Crossroads and researched early farm gardens building on his lifelong vocation as a gardener. George introduced many people in Waterloo County to the beauty of the dried strawflower producing many blooms for sale at the farmer's market and for Grace's bouquets.

George had a sought after tenor voice, singing in choirs and quartets\endash notably the Junior Farmers Quartet and Renaissance Singers\endash and leading singing and soloing throughout the Mennonite community. He was both a lover of British cars and an advocate of alternatives to the automobile. He was known publicly as an advocate of passenger rail publishing regular articles and letters to the editor and planning yearly family train trips. The family had two dogs, Avey and Bo, after which George took up weekend sitting for National Service dogs. Most recently George and Grace welcomed Mabel the cat into their home. George was rejuvenated by summer family camping trips, being outside and cooking on the hibachi. He was also an avid cyclist and recorded his mileage daily. He travelled the circumference of the earth more than two and a half times on short and long bicycle trips in Ontario. Late in life he suffered a significant bicycle accident and subsequently became interested in the results of concussions.

A longtime interest in family and local history took shape in the Society for the Preservation of the Samuel Bechtel Burial Ground, a registered non-profit he founded with others to protect the site were Mennonites first gathered 200 years ago.

George will be remembered by many relatives and friends.
