    DEATH OF MRS. ELSLEY.

At 12 o'clock on Sat. night last at the residence of her son, Mr. C. D. Bowman, Mrs. Elsley passed peacefully away. During the past two weeks, she has been seriously ill, and her physician, Dr. Ullyott, had but slight hope of her recovery. For a number of years Mr. and Mrs. Elsley resided in the village of West Montrose, but for some time past, owing to increasing feebleness, the old couple found a comfortable home in the commodious residence of her son, about a mile north of the village. There kind and loving hands ministered to the requirements of paralytic weakness, and encircled by tenderness and affection after a useful honored life this estimable lady in her seventy-eight year passed calmly to her eternal home. The funeral was held on Wednesday Oct. 19th after the hour of 10 o'clock a.m., the interment being at West Montrose cemetery. The various members of the family, who resided in Pennsylvania and New York arrived in time to see their well beloved mother prior to her departure for a better world; Mr. Byron Bowman, a successful druggist of Lyons, N. Y., Mr. George Bowman, Banker, and Rev. John Lynn M. A., Mr. Lynn and daughter Lida were present at the death bed. The beautiful and devoted life in harmony with the pure and ennobling graces of Christian character will live on in the memory of all who knew her in a more vital memorial than that of marble, a life that lives on, a blessed inspiration to surviving relatives and friends, pointing with no uncertain hand to a glorious immortality. Deceased was in her 78th year.

    George Bowman

After an illness of several weeks, resulting from an accident, the death of George Bowman, the 20-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. C. D. Bowman, of West Montrose, occurred at the Guelph Hospital last Monday. Deceased was a bright young man who was well known in Elmira, where he attended High School during two terms. His genial disposition and his gentlemanly bearing made for him many friends, who will be grieved to hear of his demise. During the last term of his studies here he contracted rheumatism and was laid up with the disease for some time. Subsequently he was obliged to go south, where his condition improved so that he was allowed to return to his home. Shortly after his arrival at his home he was thrown off a horse onto a water trough, when he sustained an injury to his kidneys. Hemorrhages set in and in spite of the best medical attention, he succumbed to the injuries.

The funeral was held at 2:30 today (Thursday) at 2:30, to West Montrose Congregational church and Cemetery.

Life of the late Rev. Floyd Howlett celebrated 10 years after his death

    Peterborough This Week

    Thursday, July 18, 2013
On Friday night, many will be gathering at Millennium Park to celebrate the life of Rev. Floyd Howlett. The event runs from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Silver Bean Cafe.

It seems hard to believe that Rev. Howlett died a decade ago. He was a remarkable leader who always put social justice ahead of self interest. He was a champion for gay rights long before that cause became socially acceptable. He was a very vocal peace activist and one of the founders of the local Kawartha Ploughshares peace movement.

When some questioned who contemporary churches -- especially those professing to honour "The Prince of Peace" -- are not more prominent in speaking for this cause, Rev. Howlett explained that in the contemporary world many interests benefit from war and faith leaders who speak out strongly against it can jeopardize their employment and their future.

But that didn't stop Floyd, who was in the front lines at every rally against poverty, every rally for decent housing, every rally against injustice, every rally for peace and brotherhood. My most enduring image of him will always be watching him struggle over snow banks with his oxygen tank in tow when he was in the final months of his life but still always present at the weekly peace rallies at Confederation Park.

Rev. Howlett was not a loud dominating leader but his unwavering courageous support for what he saw as morally right and just will never be forgotten by those who knew and admired him. His wife and family and his many friends continue to work for the ideals he passionately advocated and upheld. His memory will endure as a local hero for peace and justice.
