Death Calls Barbara Snyder Wife of Noah Betzner In Her Eighty Seventh Year

On Sunday morning at her late residence on Lancaster Street, there passed away in the person of Barbara (Snyder) Betzner, daughter of the late Moses E. Snyder, and wife of Noah Betzner, one of the few remaining people who are able and competent to speak of pioneer days in Waterloo County. Although Mrs. Betzner was within five days of her eighty-seventh birthday and somewhat feeble due to her advanced age, her death was quite unexpected and particularly so as she arose and partook of her breakfast on Sunday as usual. She passed away as she wished to do in her chair and under circumstances which would bring the least inconvenience to those most dear to her.

Mrs. Betzner was the eldest of a large family of eleven children, all of whom were well known in Waterloo County, and of whom only three survive, namely Moses C. Snyder of Gloversville, N.Y., and the Misses Hannah and Lucena of Kitchener. On March 3rd 1857, the deceased was married to Noah Betzner who was brought up on the now historic farm on the Grand River opposite Doon. Mr. Betzner, who is in his ninetieth year, will have the sympathy of a wide circle of friends in this great bereavement, breaking as it does a companionship of over sixty-eight years.
The late Mrs. Betzner was the mother of eight children, three of whom died in infancy, the other five remaining to mourn the loss of a good Christian mother. They are Mrs. Mary Ann Brubacher, Mrs. Magdalena Shantz and Mrs. Zelinda Hallman, of Kitchener, Mr. Oliver Betzner, on the Breslau Road, and Mr. Ephrain Betzner, of Conestogo. Fourteen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren also survive.

The funeral will be held on the afternoon of Wednesday, a short service at her late residence at two o'clock to be followed by a service at the Bethany Mennonite Church, of which congregation she was one of the original members. Internment will take place in the cemetery of the First Mennonite Church on King Streete East. The passing of this grand old lady will be mourned by many besides those of her immediate family and the sympathy of the whole community will go to those who were nearest and dearest to her.

Snyder.--Bro. Isaac C. Snyder died at Didsbury, Alta., on Sunday, May 29, 1910, at the home of his daughter, Maggie; aged 60 y. 2 m. 17 d. Funeral services were held at the West Zion Mennonite Church, also interment. Services at the home were conducted by Bro. John Lehman, at the church by Bro. Israel Shantz. Text, II Tim. 4: 6-8. The family, 4 sons and 2 daughters, lose a kind father, and the Church a consistent member. Bro. Snyder was always in his seat at church when health permitted. He was deeply concerned about the welfare of the Church. What is our loss is but his gain. May his good example ever live on in the lives of others. Israel R. Shantz.

Mrs. Oliver Hallman, 74, nee Zelinda Betzner, of 130 Lancaster Street East, died today at St. Mary's Hospital, following a brief illness. A native of Waterloo Township, she was daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Noah Betzner. Her marriage took place in Waterloo Townahip 53 years ago. Mrs. Hallman was a member of Bethany Mennonite Church. Surviving are three sons, Rev. Clifford Hallman, Didsbury, Alta, Willard of Portland, Ore. and Capt. Garland Hallman of Vancouver; one daughter, Mrs. Henry Bowman of Kitchener; one brother, Ephraim Betzner, Conestogo and four grandchildren. Funeral service will be held Monday at 2 at Bethany Mennonite Church with Rev. P. G. Lehman pastor of the church, officiating. Interment will be to First Mennonite Cemetery. The remains are resting at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home until one o'clock Monday, when removal will be made to the church.

Betzner, Ephraim, Wallenstein, Ont., son of Mr. and Mrs. Noah Betzner, died at the Bradenton Hospital, Bradenton, Fla., Feb. 22, 1965; aged 93 years. Edwin was the third of five known children born to Ezra Snyder/Snider (1841-1904) and Lucinda Snyder/Schneider, née Shantz (1848-1921). He was born and grew up in Waterloo Township, Ontario, where his father was a farmer.

Edwin married Louisa (Louise) Eby in 1897. At the time, Edwin worked for his uncle, Dilman Shantz, at the Jacob Y. Shantz & Son Company, a button factory in Buffalo, New York. He had immigrated to the United States in 1896.

The 1900 United States Census finds Edwin, Louisa, and a one-year-old daughter, Helen G., living in Rochester, New York. Edwin was a foreman in a button factory. This factory was operated by another of Edwin's uncles, Moses Shantz.

Edwin became an American citizen in 1905.

By the time of the 1910 census, Edwin, Louise, Helen, and a son, Roswell, lived in Newstead, New York. Edwin's occupation was noted as superintendent in a button factory.

The 1920 census shows that the family had returned to Rochester. The household included Edwin (age 47), Louise (50), and children, Helen G. (21), Roswell E. (18) and Edwin's mother, Lucinda Snider (71). Edwin was a superintendent in a button factory.

In 1930, Edwin, Louise, and her mother, Esther Eby, lived in Ferndale, Cambria County, Pennsylvania. Edwin was listed as a button manufacturer. By this time, Helen and Roswell were living in New York City, where Helen was a musician, and Roswell, a scenic designer.

Edwin died in May, 1948, in Brighton (a suburb of Rochester, New York). He was 75 years old.

Although both "Edwin S. Snider" and "Louisa Eby" are inscribed on a gravestone in First Mennonite Cemetery, Kitchener, Ontario, it is uncertain whether he is buried at that spot, since his birth and death years (unlike his wife's dates) have not been added. Their daughter, Helen, was also buried there; her name and dates are inscribed on the same gravestone.

Edwin Snyder died at his home in Rochester, N.Y. yesterday.

His father and mother, the late Ezra Snyder and Lucinda Shantz, predeceased him. Mr. Snyder's wife, the former Louise Eby, died in July1937.

One son, Roswell and one dau. Miss Helen, New York, and a brother, Alvin,Didsbury, Alta, survive.

Funeral will be held from the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home at 2 p.m. Friday and interment is to be made in the First Mennonite Cemetery. The body will arrive in Kitchener Friday morning."

Crushed to Death
Fatality Near Berlin
A sad accident occurred on the farm of Mr. Oliver Betzner, on the Breslau road, on Monday evening, which has carried sorrow and mourning into the home. Mr. Betzner's four year old son, Leighton, was crushed to death by the large door of the driving shed. Just how the accident occurred is not known, as no one saw it happen, but it is supposed the little fellow was playing around or trying to close the heavy door, which was blown shut with great force, catching him a little below the stomach and inflicting an injury which proved fatal. The father had just returned from a trip to Waterloo, accompanied by the child, and set him down at the barn door while he went to put the rig away. The mother came out to get the boy. When she arrived the sad accident had occurred and her son was dead. The ground leading to the barn entrance slopes upward and apparently the child was walking out when caught by the door, knocked down, dragged a short distance on his back and finally pinned at the middle of the body and his life crushed out.

The bereaved parents have the sympathy of the entire community. Their son was a particularly bright and winning child.

Killed by a Bar Door - The three year old son of Mr. Oliver Betzner, on Breslau road, about two miles east of Berlin, was instatntly killed on Tuesday afternoon by a barn door. The door was broken loose from the fastenings by the strong wind, and swept around, knocking down the child, who was standing in its course, and pinning him to the ground.

An exceedingly sad death took place at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ephraim F. Betzner, in Conestogo on Friday evening at 7 o'clock when their only eight-year-old daughter, Nancy Arvilla, succumbed to a severe attack of infantile paralysis. The little girl was around as bright and cheerful as usual during the earlier part of the week but on Tuesday symptoms of the strange disease was evident and despite all the medical attention possible death claimed the young child. Her untimely demise is an irreparable blow to the parents and her young associates and the sympathy of their friends and acquaintances will be extended to them in their severe affliction. Mr. and Mrs. Noah Betzner, Lancaster Street, Berlin, and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Martin, Conestogo, are grandparents of the deceased. The funeral will take place on Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the home in Conestogo t the Old Mennonite church and cemetery in Bloomingdale for interment.

Brown City, March 18. - funeral services for Lloyd Moyer, 51, former resident of this community, who died unexpectedly Sunday morning in his home in Rose City, were held at 2:30 p. m. Wednesday in the Mennonite church here with Rev. R. W. Herber officiating. Burial was made in the Brown City Evergreen cemetery.

Besides his widow, the former Miss Susan Trollop, Mr. Moyer is survived by his father, Ephraim Moyer, of Brown City; two daughters, Mrd. Snider, J. Stanley, son of Ephraim and Lucinda (Hallman) Snider, was born at Kitchener, Ont., Feb. 24, 1904; died of a heart attack at Cambridge Hospital, Mar. 15, 1985; aged 81 y. On Sept. 4, 1929, he was married to Erna Shantz, who died on Feb.2, 1978. Surviving are 4 sons (Paul, James, Kenneth, and Robert), 3 daughters (Miriam-Mrs. Howard Cressman, Audrey-Mrs. William MacDonald, and Lucille-Mrs. Elmer Ellison), 16 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, and one brother (A. Leonard Snider). He was preceded in death by one daughter (Mary Carol) and one sister (Sylvia-Mrs. Solomon Gehman). He was a member of Preston Mennonite Church, where funeral services were held on Mar. 17, in charge of Brian Bauman and Paul Martin; interment in Mannheim Cemetery.
