    Death of Mrs. Agnes McMillan - One of First Generation of Canadians Born in Ontario

    After a long life of almost eighty-four years, and a life so wholly devoted to her family, Mrs. Agnes McMillan passed away to her eternal rest on Friday, Oct. 17th, 1924. She survived her late husband, William McMillan, by nearly thirty ears. She had lived in Ayr for forty years. Her burial took place on Monday, October 20th to Ayr cemetery.

    Mrs. McMillan would rightly make the claim of being one of the first generation of Canadian born in Ontario. Her parents on both sides came to Canada in the thirties with a group of settlers from Scotland, and located in the township of Beverly, eight miles east of Galt, where they hewed out comfortable homes for themselves and families. Prominent in this new settlement were the Dickson and Jamieson families. Thomas Jamieson and Janet Dickson were married in this country, and their first born was Agnes, the subject of this sketch, who was born on Nov. 2nd, 1840. Although she was the eldest of six brothers and sisters, she outlived them all. Her own homes have been in Kirkwall, Beverly Township; Listowel, and Ayr.

    She had at times related some of the anxieties and hardships of a settler's life, how it was absolutely necessary to corral the sheep and other live stock for fear of the wolves; how the trips to Galt, the market town, were attended by considerable hardship and even danger; and how many of our present day privileges and advantages, such as church, school, medical aid, and other needful things were denied them.

    Mrs. McMillan married early in 1859, when, if possible, her life became still more active. She became the mother of twelve children - 5 sons and 7 daughters, Robert, who died in Winnipeg four years ago. The survivors are: Wellwood M., of Toronto; Thomas, of Ayr; John of Seattle, Wash.; Janet, of Ayr; Margaret of Rochester, N.Y.; Elizabeth D., of Ayr; Agnes, of New York City; Mary C., of Ayr; Tena (Mrs. H.R. Jacoby) of Dundurn, Sask.; William J., of Detroit; and Anna N. (Mrs. George M. Jacoby) of Dundurn, Sask.

    The whole life of the deceased had been characterized by an unstinted devotion to her home and family. If anything of an outside nature occupied her attention it was the children of the community in which she lived. Appreciation of this attention was evidenced by the kindly remembrances from children in her last illness. Her Bible was her daily guide in life. Her precept and example have doubtless exerted great influence for good with those associated in any way with her. Truly "a mother in Israel" has passed to her reward.

    Thomas McMillan - Passing of Well-Known Resident of Ayr

    Thomas McMillan, a well-known resident of the village of Ayr, whose passing away on January 6th was noted in last week's News, was born in Kirkwall, Wentworth County, on September 22nd, 1861. He came to Ayr, as a young man, more than forty years ago to assist his brother, Wellwood McMillan, who at that time operated a grocery business. He later followed farming, for some years owning and residing on the Bawtinheimer farm, east of Ayr, on the Galt road, after the sale of which he took up his residence on McRae street, Ayr. In the year 1909 he was married to Jane Elizabeth Chisholm of Crieff, Beverly Township, who predeceased him seven years. Deceased was a member of Knox United Church and a Liberal in politics. He was of a quiet, reserved disposition, an extensive reader, fond of poetry of which he memorized favorite selections, including many hymns. The many and frequent attentions of his neighbors and friends during his long illness testify to the high respect and esteem in which he was held by his fellow-townsmen and friends from the country round about where he was well known. Surviving him are his three brothers, Wellwood M., of Toronto; John, Seattle, Wash.; and William J., of Detroit; and his sisters, Janet, Margaret, Elizabeth and Mary of Ayr ; Agnes, of New York City ; Christina (Mrs. H . R. Jacoby) and Anna (Mrs. George Jacoby) of Dundurn, Sask. The funeral, which was held on Saturday afternoon, January 9th, was conducted by Rev. J. W. Currie, pastor of Knox United Church. The pallbearers were Messrs. Robert Morton, John Cochrane, Frederick Mitchell, John W. Currie, John Q. Reid and F. E. Robinson.

    Elizabeth McMillan Passes

    One of Ayr's most respected elderly residents, Miss Elizabeth Dickson McMillan, passed away at Willett Hospital, Paris, early Tuesday morning following a brief illness. Although in indifferent health for some time, her death came as a distinct shock to many friends and neighbors. Born in Kirkwall, she was a daughter of the late William and Agnes McMillian. The family moved to Listowel for a period of five years and then to Ayr some 70 years ago. Miss McMillan was a talented pianist and in earlier years taught piano to many music students in the community.

    A person of quiet and retiring nature, Miss McMillan was known as a kind neighbor and pleasant acquaintance. She was well-read and a keen observer of current events. In former years she was a frequent visitor to Ayr Public Library. Surviving are three sisters, Miss Mary McMillan, at home; Mrs. Herman R. Jacoby (Christina) and Mrs. (George M. Jacoby) (Anna), both of Saskatoon, Sask. Funeral service will be held at her late residence on Thursday at 2: 30 pm, with interment in Ayr Cemetery.

    Agnes J. McMillan - A well-known resident of Ayr, Agnes Jamieson McMillan, passed away Thursday evening in Willett Hospital, Paris. The late Miss McMillan, who was in her 72nd year, had been in failing health for some time. Born at Kirkwall, the late Miss McMillan came to Ayr as a young girl. For many years she was a nurse at St. Luke's Hospital, New York, and returned to her home in Ayr about 10 years ago. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church. Surviving are six sisters, Janet, Margaret, Elizabeth and Mary, at home; Mrs. Herman Jacoby (Christina), and Mrs. George Jacoby (Anna), both of Dundurn, Sask.; and one brother, William, of Lake Orion, Mich. Four brothers predeceased her. - The Funeral - The funeral took place from her late residence, Water Street, on Sunday at 2.30 p.m., with interment being made in Ayr Cemetery. Rev W. J. McKeown of Galt conducted the services. The pallbearers were: Everitt Thompson, Fred McMillan, and Max McBride, all of Toronto; Beverly McMillan of Windsor, W. J Henderson of North Dumfries, and J. W. Currie of Ayr. Besides many relatives and friends from Ayr, there were present a number from Toronto, Galt, Paris, Blair, Hespeler, Windsor and Dundurn Saskatchewan.

    Miss Mary C. McMillan Passes

    Miss Mary Christina McMillan passed away early Sunday. She was in her 93rd year. A resident of the Drumbo Nursing Home for the past five years, Miss McMillan had spent the rest of her life in Ayr, in the family home on Water St. A daughter of the late William and Agnes McMillan, she was born in Kirkwald. Miss McMillan was a member of Knox United Church and for many years was a very faithful Sunday School teacher. For several years, she was a clerk at the Ayr Post office. She was predeceased by five brothers: Wellwood, Thomas, Robert, John and William; also six sisters Janet, Agnes, Elizabeth, Margaret, Christina (Mrs. Herman Jacoby), and Anna (Mrs. George Jacoby). Surviving are several nieces and nephews. Funeral and committal services were held today (Wed.) from Little's Funeral Home, Galt. Rev. F. E. Rice of the United Church officiated. Interment was in Ayr Cemetery.
