________
AMONG THE FARMERS
ELIAS HALLMAN
Bordering on the boundary between Oxford and Waterloo counties west side of the Middle Town Line, Located the home of the subject of this sketch. Just a few rods distant acres over in Wilmot township is the home of his birth and where his venerable father and mother and brother Josiah now reside. Here it was that be first saw the light of day, the event took place in the year 1850. He undoubedly had strong attachments for his home and parents, for after serving over twenty-one years under the parental roof he did not wander far away, but has ever since lived within hailing distance of where he had been reared to manhood.
In 1872, about the time be became of age, he was married to Polly, daughter of Mr. Jacob S Bowman, prominent and well known farmer near Haysville, and it was about this time they begen life together in their present home. Here they have labored and enjoyed prosperity for more than a quarter of a century. Mrs. Hallman was born near Waterloo in 1851, being now in her 48th year. To her and her husband have been born four children, three daughters and one son. Jessie the eldest of the family is the wife of Mr. William Richmond, a prosperous young farmer east of Washington; Elwin B., an intelligent and promising young man, is at home. He has attended several terms in the Berlin High School and last season open: several months in the Northwest, Lauretts and Minnota, the youngest daughters, are at home attending school.
Mr. and Mrs. Hallman have been members of the United Brethren church for about twenty five years, and Mr Hallman has served as class leader in the church at New Dundee for period of twenty years. As evidence of their profound sincerity in christian work their home will testify.
Whoever has occasion to step across their threshold will find all that constitutes a true christian home. Parents, children, and all around them, graciously extend the stranger that white souled hospitality and kindness, which at once makes him feel he is one of the family. Oh, if the exemplary conduct of the children and the earnest christian spirit of the parents of this home could prevail in all homes what s heaven-like world we would then live in!
Mr. Hallman, it seems, has not been an aspirant for political office further than being trustee for Union School Section No. 2, Blenheim and Wilmot No. 3. In this capacity he is now serving his fourteenth year. In educational matters he has always taken a deep interest, and to him a good share of credit is due for the modern facilties the section now enjoys. In 1886 the fine large brick school because it can boast of to-day was planned and erected. Mesers Hallman, Iasac Bricker and Isaac Roseuberger were then the trustees. Messrs Bricker and Hallman were detailed as a committee to select a site and visit other sections for the purpose of finding a design. They finally selected that of the Crosshill school. The site for the building was then chosen, it being on Mr. Hallman's farm near the county line and a most commendable one it is. The structure was immediately pushed to completion, and when it was completed and ready for holding school it was considered one of the best planned country school buildings in two counties. It is amply provided with space, being capable of seating about one hundred pupils. In the basement is a large hot air furnace which furnishes abundance of warmth in the school above. In addition to the furnace room there is a good wood shed in the rear and in front there is an ante-room on each side supplied with shelves and hooks for the accommodation of the children to keep their dinners, cloaks, coats, overshoes, etc. In connection there is a fine large play-ground with a gradual slope in every direction, thus affording splendid drainage to keep it perfectly dry.
It may not be intraling upon space and time to insert here that a quarter of a century ago Mr. David Bean, editor of the CHRONICLE, wielded the birch and blue beech in this very section, but that was then in the old building which stands on the opposite side of the road in Wilmot and now used as a dwelling house. The school of that time bears a special distinction from the fact that a number of its pupils bave since become noted as citizens, business men and politicans. First, the teacher, Mr. Bean himself, succeeded in reaching the top rung in the ladder of success in public school teaching, having been tendered the principalship of the Elmira schools while he was still engaged here. Among his pupils were Hon. D K Erb, M P.for South Perth; Josiah Hallman, Reeve of Wilmot township; Irvin Masters, stockholder and general manager of the Plattsville Milling Co; Menno Hallman of the Onterio Life Insurance Co, of Waterloo, and others, some of them prominent farmers of this section, who still have kind recollections of their old teacher.
Returning to the subject of this sketch, Mr. Hallmnn, it is not in the nature of boasting to say that no other farmer in Blenheim or Wilmot has been more prosperous considering the opportunities presented to him. He does not spend many idle moments at home. Daring the winter season in the day time he will be found almost constantly busy looking after his live stock or doing other odd jobs about the place. After the close of the day his time is usually taken up in preparing some subject of a religious nature for his convenience in his church as a class leader, or as singer in some Sunday school entertainment. To his church almost devotedly Mr. Hallman is most devotedly time and money in its behalf. If all those identified with church work were like him Satan's chances of demoralizing the world would become entirely extinct. In his church work and that on the farm Mr. Hallman is greatly assisted by the unflinching devotion of a kind and exceptionally industrious wife, who is not outdone by him in generosity towards those in need or in doing that which is for the best interests of the church.
As a farmer Mr. Hallman has attained his fair share of success. In the cattle line dairy cows have shared a good part of his attention, though he occasionally turns out a number of young beef cattle. He has now in his stables eleven extra good cows that bear evidence of kind treatment and judicious feeding. He has also a fine lot of calves and young cattle. Some of the latter are fit for the butcher now, but it is his intention to keep them over until next season. In horses Mr. Hallman has for years taken a good deal of interest. In 1886 he imported a fine thoroughbred Cydesdale filly from Scotland. Lady Hallman, her register name, is still in his possession and has carried off quite a number of first prizes. Since Mr. Hallman purchased her she has produced a number of excellent animals, she being the mother of three well-jointed youngster at present in his stables. In addition to these there are several other roadsters that bear good records as to speed.
Mr. Hallman is well situated for feeding, etc. In the upper portion of his barn is the latest improved steam cutter and chopping mill, both of which are are separated by a windmill. In implements and vehicles he is as well supplied as any other farmer in the township and has the necessary sheds in which to keep them. Since be took possession of the premises many improvements have been made, both on the barn and the residence. The lives of both he and his faithful wife have not deem mispent and when old age requires them to retire from active physical labors they will have justly merited the richest reward of have they have earnestly and zealously served so long.

A Wedding Party
A very pleasing ceremony took place last Tuesday afternoon at the house of Mr. Samuel Hallman of Blenheim, when his youngest daughter Samantha was united in marriage, by Rev. Jacob Detweiler, to Mr. Oliver Betzner of Natchez. The bride was supported by her cousin, Miss Sylvia Bingeman, of Berlin, while Mr. Ephraim Betzner, the bridegroom's brother performed a similar duty for him. The ceremony was witnessed by some seventy of the nearest relatives and friends of the contracting parties, after which a sumptuous supper was served. During the evening the gathering was entertained by vocal and instrumental music, after which the bridal party drove to Berlin where amid showers of rice they boarded the midnight train intending to take a trip to Grand Rapids, in which place they will remain for a few days. We wish the newly married couple much joy.

In 1876 she was married to Jonathan Shantz and 9 children blessed this union. Two children had passed away while still in the East, which leaves 4 to mourn the loss of a kind mother (Urias, Jonathan, Verna, Mrs. Elmer Shantz, and Edna, Mrs. Carl Semberg); also six sisters and 3 brothers. Sister Shantz was a faithful member of the Mennonite Church and will be greatly missed. She was very patient in her last illness, and while she suffered greatly she was anxious that God's will should be done in her life. With the Lord
Ethel Jamieson
TORONTO, Ont. Mrs. R J. Jamieson (nee Ethel Bingeman), whose long life of service in the Pentecostal Assemblies has touched many lives, went to her eternal reward October 4, 1975. Mrs. Jamieson was born in Kitchener, Ont., in 1888 and at 27, in Winnipeg, Man., a trained nurse and teacher, she turned her thoughts to missions. She went to Liberia, West Africa, in 1915 and served there 18 years - years that were true pioneer days, in a most difficult climate where many laid down their lives early in their careers. Then as Ethel Bingeman, she trekked to interior forest areas and helped to establish mission work.
In one of her early years in Liberia, Miss Bingeman wrote: "Recollections this year are of the visits to town to those sick and dying, and to hear of their faith in God before they pass over the River. They ceased to think of the many who dance or wail for them, rum to be drunk, and bullocks killed, but their thoughts were of the King their eyes would behold. Sometimes sowing in tears, our heart is satisfied in the thought of reaping by and by for the glory of our God."
In 1933 invalided home from the exacting physical conditions where she worked, the missionary turned teacher in Bible school work in Winnipeg for several years.
In 1944, Ethel Bingeman was appointed as the first national director of the newly established Women's Missionary Council. She served in this capacity for 12 years, preparing the important routes for the far reaching missions-slanted ministry of Pentecostal women. Her own life was "service" with great dedication and faithfulness throughout, and part of it was giving strong W.M.C. leadership.
Retiring as W.M.C. director in 1956, Ethel Bingeman married the elderly Robert J. Jamieson, retired West Indies missionary and they lived in the Islands for five years until Mr. Jamieson's death in 1961. Mrs. Jamieson then cared for an older sister in Rochester, N.Y., but had lived in Shepherd Lodge, Toronto, the past six years and had recently travelled to see two sisters in B.C. who survive her. The funeral service was attended by many W.M.C., Missionary and church friends, as well as relatives which included her niece, Mrs. Betsy Carr, and Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Harper, relatives of Mr. Jamieson. The funeral was conducted by Rev. Paul Sorensen of Danforth Gospel Temple. Rev. C. W. Lynn, Rev. James Skinner and Rev. George Lend participated.

Crushed to Death
Fatality Near Berlin
A sad accident occurred on the farm of Mr. Oliver Betzner, on the Breslau road, on Monday evening, which has carried sorrow and mourning into the home. Mr. Betzner's four year old son, Leighton, was crushed to death by the large door of the driving shed. Just how the accident occurred is not known, as no one saw it happen, but it is supposed the little fellow was playing around or trying to close the heavy door, which was blown shut with great force, catching him a little below the stomach and inflicting an injury which proved fatal. The father had just returned from a trip to Waterloo, accompanied by the child, and set him down at the barn door while he went to put the rig away. The mother came out to get the boy. When she arrived the sad accident had occurred and her son was dead. The ground leading to the barn entrance slopes upward and apparently the child was walking out when caught by the door, knocked down, dragged a short distance on his back and finally pinned at the middle of the body and his life crushed out.
The bereaved parents have the sympathy of the entire community. Their son was a particularly bright and winning child.

_______________
Amid every sign of respect from town and country alike, the body of Harry Cressman was interred on Sunday in the Didsbury cemetery, The deceased was in his forty-second year, having been born in Baden, Ontario, and owing to his long residence in the Didsbury district was well known by almost every resident. For some time he was associated with his two brothers, Bert and Eluid, local merchants, and his cheerfulness and good nature whilst so engaged won him a host of friends. His temperament indeed together with the integrity of his character were often as favorably commented upon his example of a well-spent Christian life. The funeral service was held in the Mennonite Church at three p.m., where an outside gathering of sympathisers swelled the total attendance, it is estimated, to five hundred people. Rev. Hullman, pastor of the church, officiated, and delivered a very comforting and helpful address. A quartette consisting of J. and H. Stickley and Gordon and Russell Sherick also materially assisted in the service by their singing, that old favorite "Shall we meet beyond the river" being rendered by them very appropriately. The pallbearers included--W. Liphardt, D. Tholman, J. Schantz, N. Swalm and M. Shantz. Among the relatives at the funeral, in addition to the mother of the deceased, there were six brothers present, Bruce (Bearberry, Alta.), Millo (Stavely), Douglas (Delia), and Bert, Eluid and Morgan (Didsbury). There were also present Mrs. Millo Cressman and R.D. Curdy. Upon and surrounding the casket the large number of floral offerings mutely testitfied to the respect and esteem in which deceased was held, and as a further expression of this feeling it was noted that nearly ninety cars followed the remains to their last resting place...
