    Notes:

BIRKEMOE, Diane Marie (née Solomon), PhD. Taken from us too soon from injuries sustained in a severe fall, Diane passed peacefully and with family at her side, at Trillium Health Centre on Friday, April 8, 2011. She was 70. Beloved wife of 45 years to Peter C. Birkemoe, Professor Emeritus, University of Toronto. Proud and nurturing mother of Peter (Nathalie Atkinson), Karen (Luc Gondard) and Eric (Coralie D'Souza). Born and raised and later, married in Kitchener, Ontario, Diane was predeceased by her parents Helen (Lackenbauer) and Douglas Solomon. She was a loving sister to Dennis (Joanne, deceased) and much-loved aunt to Lisa, Denny, Sarah, Kelsie, Maggie, Emma and Chloe. A multi-lingual scholar of Latin American and comparative literature, Diane and Pete met in graduate school at the University of Illinois U-C. Known for her acerbic wit, Diane's appetite for life was topped only by her appetite for food (and, fortunately, an epic metabolism). Adventurous epicure, intrepid traveller and avid cinephile (a 30-year TIFF veteran), Diane was creative (an accomplished artist) and resilient (a breast cancer survivor); a loyal friend, she had a gift for sustaining friendships and will be missed by many. Always on our minds, forever in our hearts. Cremation has taken place. A Funeral Mass will be held at ST. GREGORY'S, ETOBICOKE (122 Rathburn Road at Kipling, 416-239-4831) on Friday, April 15th at 9: 30 a.m.; in consideration of Holy Week, the church requests no flowers. Memorial donations to ShareLife or The Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated. Tributes and condolences to: dsbirk@gmail.com.
