William Linton Dies Suddenly at Galt - Principal of New Hamburg School for Nineteen Years - Mr. William Linton, one of Galt's best known citizens, dropped dead on the street on his way down town from his home. He was suddenly seized and expired instantly.
Deceased was one of the best-known educationists in Ontario, prominent in the teachers' organizations - for years. He was 77 years of age and was born in Scotland, but came to Canada when young, and had taught school for upwards of 50 years, the last 25 of which were spent in Galt as principal of Victoria School. He retired a few years ago. Before coming to Galt he was principal of the New Hamburg public school for 19 years and before that taught at Reidsville.
He was looking forward to the coming Galt old boys' reunion with great anticipation, expecting to meet many ex-pupils, and planned to take part in an old-time school session. As chairman of the public library board he had been busy on Monday and Tuesday seeing to the decoration of that building, supervising the work himself. He had not complained of feeling unwell and the news of his sudden passing on Tuesday proved a great blow to the community on the eve of its big holiday.
Deceased had taken an active interest in civic affairs, especially in regard to education. He was a staunch Liberal, a well-known curler and lawn bowler and a great church man, an officer of Central Presbyterian. He is survived by his widow, one son, Major A.P. Linton, of Regina, and one daughter, Miss Jean, at home.

In December 1883, the Rev. C. F. Spring comments on the good order maintained by the teacher, William Linton. Mr. Linton taught here for many years and was principal of the school when he left about 1897, to take a better position in Galt, Ontario. He was known to the boys as "Scotty". He was a small man, with steely blue eyes, a typical Scot and a very capable teacher. Scotty's patent method of stuffing Entrance Examination information into backward pupils has never been equalled before or since. I have often wondered what the examiners thought when they read thirty or forty papers, all exactly alike, except where some lunkhead had forgotten his stuff.
