AARON GROH SUCCUMBS SUDDENLY AT HESPELER

Well Known Citizen Passes Away Suddenly In His 72nd Year.

Aaron Groh, one of Hespeler's best-known citizens, died suddenly in his 72nd year at his residence on Monday morning. The deceased had been suffering from heart trouble for some time, but seemed in the best of health on Sunday, having attended church services as usual.

Mr. Groh was born near Kossuth and later came to Hespeler where he established a wagonmaking business, and continued at this until he retired a few years ago. He was a prominent member of the Methodist church and latterly of the United Church, having been Sunday School superintendent for some 23 years, as well as being a member of the session and of the church board. He is survived by his widow and one daughter, Mrs. George Williams, of Toronto.

Nelson R. Wildfong, 83, of 2910, King St. East, died Sunday, in hospital, at London, Ont., after a lengthy illness, He was a former resident of Preston. Born, Feb. 27, 1877, in Walkerton, he was the son of the late, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Wildfong. He was a member of Freeport United Church. His first wife, the former, Jessie Hanratty, died in 1917. Survivors include his second wife, Uberta Boyce, one son J. Edwin of Preston, one daughter, Mrs. Floyd "Luella" Bricker of Kitchener, one brother, Walter of Preston, two sisters, Mrs. Mary Hughes and Mrs. Frank Hannenberg of Preston and three grandchildren. One son and two daughters, predeceased him. The body is at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home, where the funeral will be held, Wednesday, at 2 p.m. Rev. H. H. Cragg will officiate. Burial will be in the Preston Cemetery.

Sitler - Milton, son os Isaac and Hannah (Groh) Sitler, was born in Waterloo Co., Ont., Nov. 11, 1870; died Dec. 31, 1940 in the Camrose Hospital; aged 70 y. 1 m. 20 d. For the past few years he had been suffering from diabetes, but the immediate cause of his death was heart failure. At the age of 25 he went to Osceola Co., Iowa, where he stayed for five years. From here he moved to Mayton, Alberta, where he took up a homestead. In 1906 he was united in marriage to Martha Wideman. To this union were born 6 sons and 3 daughters (Elmer, Melvin, Edwin, Ruth Foss, Nelson, Clarence, Clara Foss, and Mabel, all of Camrose, Alta.). One son (Ira) died in infancy. In the spring of 1913 he with his family moved to Hubbard, Oreg., where they resided for three years. In 1916 they again came back to Mayton. In the spring of 1918, they moved to a farm near Roundhill, from here moving to his final home near Camrose, Alta. In 1905 he became a member of the Mennonite Church, to which he remained faithful until death. He leaves his loving wife, 8 children, 2 brothers (Wesley of Elmira; and Jeremiah, of Preston, Ont.), 4 sisters (Mrs. Henry Steckley, of Zurich, Ont; Mrs. Martin Bauman, of Waterloo, Ont.; Mrs. Isaac Martin of Drayton, Ont.; Mrs. Eli Hurst, of Alma, Ont.) 8 grandchildren, and a large group of relatives and friends. His parents, 2 brothers, 1 sister, and 1 child preceded him in death. Funeral services were held at the home and at the Salem Mennonite Church near Tofield, Jan. 3, in charge of Bro. J. B. Stauffer. HESPELER Jeremiah Sitler; 80, of RR 1, Hespeler, died Friday at his home after a three-week illness.

He was born July 11, 1885, in Heidelberg, and had lived in the Hespeler area since 1948. Prior to that he had farmed in Western Canada.
He was a member of Wanner Mennonite Church, Beaverdale.

He was predeceased by his first wife, the former Hannah Buschert. Surviving are his second wife, the former Annie Gingrich; one son, Paul, at home; one daughter, Arlene of Bloomington, Ind.; two sisters, Mrs. Isaac (Sarah) Martin of Drayton and Mrs. Eli (Melinda) Horst of Alma, and four grandchildren.

The body will be at the Nelson Funeral Home, Hespeler, until 1 p.m. Monday when removal will be made to the Wanner Mennonite Church, where the funeral service will be con- ducted at 3 p.m. by Rev. How- ard Schmitt. Interment will be in Cressman Mennonite cemetery, Breslau.

Donations to the Mennonite Board of Missions and Charity will be accepted as expressions of sympathy.

On Thursday, May 5, 1977, at K-W Hospital, age 89 years, Malina Sittler, widow of Eli Horst, of 330 Park St., Kitchener, formerly of Alma.

Dear mother of Ismeal and Urias of Linwood; Sarah and Mary Ann of Kitchener, Noah of Windsor, Eli of Winnipeg; 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren also survive. She was predeceased by two daughters, one son, five brothers and four sisters.

Removal was made to the home of Mr. Owen Martin, at 92 King Street, St. Jacobs, for a private service on Sunday. Removal was then made to Martin's Mennonite Meeting House for public service. Burial followed in the adjoining cemetery.

WILDFONG, Joseph Edwin "Ted" Passed away peacefully at Hanning House in Cambridge, two doors down from where he was born, on Tuesday, October 12, 2010 in his 94th year. Beloved husband of the late Marjorie (nee Welsh) (1997). Survived by nieces Marita McLean (John) and Mary Jarvis (Wright) and their families, nephews David and John Bricker and their families, and brother-in-law Tom Welsh (Jean) and family. Sadly missed by his dearest friend David Reed (Elizabeth) and family. Ted served in the RCAF during WWII as a radar operator. Ted and his wife Marjorie owned and operated Preston Camera Centre for many years. A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, October 16, 2010 at 11: 00 a.m. at Trillium United Church (450 King Street East, Cambridge) with visitation one hour prior. Interment Ripley Cemetery. In Ted's memory donations to Trillium United Church, Alzheimer Society, or World Vision would be appreciated by the family. Ted's family and friends would like to thank the staff of Hanning House for their loving care of Ted over the past few years and all the loyal friends of Ted for their support during his final years.

"A distinct gloom was cast over this community when word was received last Friday evening that Miss Audrey Wildfong had passed away that afternoon at Grace Hospital Toronto. To many who were not aware that her indisposition was so serious the news came as a shock. Miss Wildfong was a nurse in training at the above institution since September 1918. She contracted typhoid fever from a patient she was nursing about four weeks ago and while the attack was not considered serious at first the disease gradually overcame her until death resulted. Deceased was the eldest child of Mr. Nelson Wildfong of Centreville but had been reared in the home of her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. W.E. Wildfong to whom the blow is an exceedingly heavy one, more especially as she had passed beyond only an hour or two before Mr. Wildfong, answering a summons saying that she was not so well, hastened to her bedside."

"Miss Wildfong was only in her 21st year. She was earnestly devoted to her profession, in fact so wrapped up in her work that her progress was rapid and sure. While the people of her own town knew little of her professionally they did not know much of her as one who had grown up in their midst. She was the possessor of a singularly sweet and winning disposition, one of those bright and beautiful spirits who radiate sunshine all along life's pathway. She won her way easily to all hearts and her early demise brought sorrow to many hearts in Preston, even among those who knew her but casually. In Grace Hospital her natural sweetness of disposition had made her a great favorite, a fact very evident by the genuine display of sorrow on the part of the entire staff from the Superintendent down."

"The funeral took place on Monday afternoon. A service was held at the home of Mr. W.E. Wildfong at 11 A.M. and a public service at the Methodist church, of which deceased was a consistent member, at 2: 30 P.M. Rev. C.D. Draper conducted both services assisted by Rev. A.L. Terryberry of Toronto, but a former pastor here. Mr. Terryberry spoke very feelingly of the deceased whom he had visited frequently during her fatal illness. The esteem in which she was held was well evidenced by the many and beautiful floral offerings. The came from: the Board of Governors of Grace Hospital, the nurses in training, the medical staff, Miss Rowan, Superintendent of the hospital; Miss MacLennan, her special nurse; the Methodist church, the Men's Bible Class, Prof. Hubuer of Toronto and twenty others as tributes from college and other personal friends."

"The staff of Grace Hospital was represented by Miss Ruth Clarke of Galt and Miss Ruby Mounce both nurses in training. Deceased is survived by her father, Mr. Nelson Wildfong, one sister, Luella, and two brothers, Irvin and Teddy. Her mother pre-deceased her over two years ago."

Welland June 1\emdash Erving Wildfont, R. R. 3, Kitchener, is in the Welland County General Hospital, in a critical condition, suffering from a fractured skull, broken leg and other injuries recieved early this morning when he fell 30 feet into the hatch of the freighter Home Smith as it was unloading grain at the Maple Leaf Milling Company elevator in Port Colboure. He is not expected to recover.

Pre- deceased by his parents Manassah B. and Selinda (Sitler) Bauman, four brothers Addison, Elmer, Edgar, Abner and two sisters Gladys Steirs and Mina Schmidt. Howard was ordained to the Christian Ministry at Elmira Mennonite Church in 1945 where he served as pastor until 1966. He then served as pastor at Clarence Centre Mennonite Church, Akron, N.Y. until 1977 and again from 1980-1987 after which they moved back to Elmira, Ontario where they were members at Zion Mennonite Fellowship. In 1997 they moved to Fairview Mennonite Home Apartments, Cambridge where they became members of Preston Mennonite Church. The family will receive friends and relatives on Friday (today) at Fairview Mennonite Home Auditorium from 2-4 p.m. and Dreisinger Funeral Home, Elmira from 7-9 p.m. Funeral service to celebrate Howard's life and faith will be held at Elmira Mennonite Church on Saturday, September 18, 2010 at 10: 30 a.m. with Rev. Claire Osinkosky and Rev. Steven Janzen officiating. Interment will follow in Elmira Mennonite Cemetery. SARAH HORST March 9, 1924 - April 22, 2009 Sarah Horst passed away peacefully at Martin's Rest Home, Elmira, on Wednesday, April 22, 2009, with her loving sister, Mary Ann by her side. She was also a dear sister of Noah Hurst, Windsor. Predeceased by parents, Eli and Malinda (Sittler) Horst; sisters, brothers and their spouses, Ismael Horst, David and Persida Horst, Urias Horst, Susannah Horst, Gordon and Salinda Ariss, Evelyn Hurst, Eli and Helen Horst. She will be fondly remembered by her nieces and nephews. Sarah was employed for many years at K-W Hospital, first in housekeeping then later as a nurse after receiving her degree as a Registered Nursing Assistant. Sarah was a longtime member of First Mennonite Church, Kitchener. The family will receive friends at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home , 171 King St. S., Waterloo on Saturday, April 25, 2009 from 1-2: 45 pm. The funeral service will be held in the chapel of the funeral home on Saturday at 3 p.m. followed by a reception at the funeral home. Interment will be in First Mennonite Cemetery. As expressions of sympathy, memorial donations may be made to Mennonite Central Committee or a charity of your choice and would be appreciated by her family. HURST, Noah 'Bud' June 30 1926- April 5 2010 Noah was born to an Old Order Mennonite farm family, one of nine children, in Waterloo County (one sister, Mary Ann, still lives in Elmira). Bud enjoyed the simple pleasures of life: his family, his home, trimming the hedge, mowing the lawn, feeding the birds, sitting in his chair reading the paper with the ball game on the radio; yet, never too busy to welcome whomever dropped by the house. Bud and his wife, Evelyn Reid Hurst (d. April 2006) raised seven children: Randall (Sharon), Mike (Debbie), Becky Bolton, (Rob), Lisa Archer (Keith), Rod (Lisa), Cathy Rankine (Gary), Jody Lewis (Sheldon). Twenty grandchildren enriched his life: Michael & Karis Hurst, Jason (Melissa) Olson, Cody & Brittany Hurst, Brandon & Jamie Battersby, Justin (Alison), Caitlin, Ben, Will, Isaiah Archer, Andrew & Devin Hurst, Melissa Juhasz (Aron), Joel & Josh Rankine, Noah, Isaac & Sarah Lewis. He was proud to be a 'great' grandfather to: Noah Olson, Luke & Zach Juhasz and looked forward to more children being born and more weddings this year. He loved his many nieces and nephews. Noah felt the call of duty and enlisted to serve in WWII. He said the enemy surrendered when they heard Bud Hurst enlisted. After the war, he met Evelyn in Kitchener and they were drawn to Windsor by the prospect of a good paying job at Ford Motor Co. They bought their first home in Remington Park and Bud died there, surrounded by the love of his family. Bud was an avid volunteer in the early years in Remington Park, helping to organize baseball leagues, the building of The Booster Pool, and making a rink in his back yard where generations of local kids came to play hockey and feed on Bud's famous burgers. A long time employee of Union Gas, many Windsorites remember Bud as their meter reader. Employee evaluations state he was 'the best worker.' For many years, he worked a second job doing janitorial work. More recently, he got much enjoyment riding his bike, sometimes with a broom and dustpan or clippers in tow to do his civic duty, tidying up the park. Bud was comfortable with who he was. He was content and grateful for his life. He was known to say, "I sure am rich. I sure do have a good family. I sure have had a good life." Biographical sketch: Mary Ann Horst was born in 1931 on a farm near Hawkesville, Ontario and died in Elmira in 2014. She was the youngest of nine children of Eli and Malinda (Sittler) Horst. During her childhood, the family moved several times to different farms in the area, and lived briefly in the village of Floradale. The Horsts were Old Order Mennonites, but none of the children remained with this group. Mary Ann was baptized at Erb Street Mennonite Church in 1948, and became a member of the Mennonite Conference of Ontario mission church at Parker (later Berea Mennonite Church).

Mary Ann attended Rockway Mennonite School as an adult, earning her high school diploma in 1957. An avid student of history and genealogy, she began writing poems and articles for Mennonite publications. Published in 1970, her first book, My Old Order Mennonite Heritage, became a bestseller. She operated the Pennsylvania Dutch Craft Shop, a gift and book shop with a store at 678 King Street West and a booth at the Kitchener Farmers Market, beginning in the 1960s. Mary Ann lived with sisters Sarah and Susannah in a home at 300 Park Street in Kitchener that was on land previously owned by her great-great-grandfather Abraham Weber. Sarah worked at the Kitchener-Waterloo hospital and became an R.N.A. While in Kitchener, the sisters attended First Mennonite Church.

Mary Ann Horst passed away peacefully at Martin's Rest Home, Elmira, on July 30, 2014. Mary Ann's Christian faith sustained her in the death of her parents, Eli and Malinda (Sittler) Horst, and all her brothers and sisters, Ismael, David (Perseda), Urias, Susanna, Salinda (Gordon Ariss), Sarah, Noah (Evelyn), and Eli (Helen). Mary Ann will be fondly remembered by nieces and nephews living throughout Southern Ontario and Western Canada. As an adult, Mary Ann returned to school to obtain her secondary education. Mary Ann valued her heritage and had a keen interest in history and genealogy. She was author of a number of books related to Waterloo County Mennonites. For many years she operated a Pennsylvania Dutch gift, craft, and book shop on King Street, and was a vendor at the Kitchener Farmers Market. In 1993 Mary Ann was recognized as a Woman of the Year with an award in the Arts/History/Literature category. Mary Ann was a long-time resident of K-W and was a member of First Mennonite Church in Kitchener. More recently she moved to Elmira and joined the Elmira Mennonite Church. The funeral service will be held in the chapel of the Dreisinger Funeral Home, Elmira, at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, August 5, 2014, followed by a reception at the funeral home where the family will receive friends. Interment will be in First Mennonite Cemetery, Kitchener, prior to the funeral service. As expressions of sympathy, memorial donations may be made to Mennonite Central Committee, or a charity of your choice.
