WEBER, ANNA (sometimes called Nancy), needle-worker and fraktur artist; b. 3 June 1814 in Earl Township, Lancaster County, Penn., the fifth of ten children of John Weber and Catherine Gehman; d. 12 Oct. 1888 in Woolwich Township, Waterloo County, Ont.

Anna Weber, daughter of a Mennonite minister and farmer, immigrated to Upper Canada from Pennsylvania with a party of 13 in April 1825. Her family settled on a farm one mile south of Conestogo in a predominantly Pennsylvania-German Mennonite community. She lived with her parents, and, after the death of her father on 21 Jan. 1854, with her mother, who died on 2 June 1864. For the remainder of her life Anna was moved from household to household within the Mennonite community. She lived at the fringe, and largely at the expense, of her social group until her death, apparently from an accidental overdose of medicine.

After 1835, the year in which Anna had first made a sampler to demonstrate her skill at needlework, she did much stitchery. She made show towels - finely embroidered linen strips decorated with traditional motifs and designs for the hope chests of neighbourhood girls - stuffed animals, including horses and squirrels as toys for children, and hooked mats of hand-dyed woollen materials which depicted stylized scenes.

About 1855 Anna began the painting of distinctive pen and wash fraktur art, which she continued until her death. This form of art had originated in Germany more than two centuries previously but was highly developed by the Pennsylvania-Germans. It is a purely decorative art, often used to illustrate manuscripts, book-plates, and such family records as birth and baptismal certificates. There is a definite lack of perspective in these pieces and scale is ignored. Recurring motifs - hearts, tulips, paired birds, and the tree of life - appear in balanced, usually symmetrical, form. Anna inherited and developed these traditional designs but her actual subjects were usually taken from nature. Instead of the traditional unicorn, for example, Anna would portray a stylized horse.

Practically all of Anna Weber's fraktur works are signed and precisely dated, with the lettering forming an integral part of the painted frame around each design. Her paintings, which resemble art nouveau stained glass or tiles, display a good sense of composition and colours which are soft and yet definite. The whole effect is one of assurance, and presumably pleasure, in these sprightly finished products which were often made as gifts for children.

The majority of fraktur artists, including Mr Altsdorf who probably taught Anna in Pennsylvania, were schoolmasters. A female fraktur artist was an anomaly but Anna was the most original and prolific of Ontario's fraktur artists. Although afflicted with dropsy, arthritis, and the ailments of age, her concentrated efforts produced many fraktur paintings, of which about 60 are extant. Anna Weber was said to have been of "unbrilliant mind," but because of her individualistic temperament she was allowed to sign her paintings - a "sinful" practice in the self-denying Mennonite community. Like much folk art in Canada, Anna's is dominated by nature and her fraktur paintings also reflect her strong ethnic heritage.

Anna Weber (1814-1888), was a Waterloo County Mennonite. Born in Lancaster County, she immigrated to Canada with her parents in 1825. She had strong religious convictions which show in many of her drawings. Most of drawings were done in her later life. A total of sixty to seventy drawings, and three decorated books are the result of her efforts. Anna was one of the last to practice the Fraktur art form in the nineteenth century. By the 1870's and 1880's, the time when she was most active, this tradition was no longer in style in the Germanic settlements of North America. She was considered queer (gshpasich) and strange (sondiboa) by the people who knew her. She remained unmarried and lived with her parents until the death of her mother in 1864 (her father died in 1854). Between 1864 and 1888 she lived with nine different families. She didn't like household chores, and "she drew pictures and helped along as a sideline". Anna suffered a stroke in 1886. It is believed that she either took the wrong medicine, or the wrong medicine was given to her, and she died in 1888.

John C. Weber," the third son of John and Catherine Weber, was born in Earl Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, February 17th, 1818, and came to Canada when he was seven years of age. He had his home with his parents who resided on the farm now possessed by Aaron Sheifley, a little south of the village of Conestogo. On January 21st, 1840, he was married to Mary, daughter of Nathan and Veronica (Bechtel) Clemens. She was born July 23rd, 1823. After their marriage they moved on his father's farm for two years. In 1842 they moved on lot No. 50, German Company Tract, Woolwich Township, thence on a farm near Hawksville, and from this place to Upper Woolwich where they resided until 1881 when they moved to West Montrose where they still reside. He was an auctioneer for 21 years, from 1851 to 1872. Their family consisted of fourteen children".

The Life of George Eby,
The man who named Nappanee, IN.

George Eby was born in Ohio, the year is unknown. He had two (2) brothers, Samuel and Henry and a sister who married and went to Wisconsin. When George was a young man he came to the small village that was to become Nappanee for a short time, then going to Goshen. From Goshen, he then moved to a small village, which he named after a man who had a small store, "Locke." George stayed in Locke and built a sawmill, with the help of a couple of partners. George's first wife had died by this time and left him with a daughter named Lydia. Lydia married and moved to Wisconsin and had two sons. She and her sons died in Wisconsin

Nappanee at this time was called Locke Station and wanting to change the name, George was asked to give it a name. George was unable to attend the meeting for naming the town, so he sent 4 men to the meeting with the name he had choosen, "Nappanee."

At about this time, he married Catherine Stull, They had one (1) son, George Henry Eby Jr. When George Jr. was about a year old, George Sr. wanted to sell his share of the sawmill to his partners and go west. George was was a speculator and saw a possibilty for making money out west. So George, leaving his wife and son, took his share of the money and went to Dodge City, Iowa, (it was said he named Dodge City also, but there is no proof of this). In Dodge City, he is said to have built a hotel. George had been sending money home to his wife and son on a regular basis, and had intended to send for them. Catherine stayed behind because of their baby. At some point he met a group of missionaries that were supposed to be going to Mexico to build a Church, so he sold his hotel and decided to go with them to Mexico. From here on, George was never heard from again.

When George Jr. grew up, he decided to go in search of his father. He went west and then to Mexico, but found no trace of his father any where, in the US or Mexico. George Jr. has since passed away, but there is a Grandson, George, living in Kalamzoo, MI.

Bowman.-- Catharine Eby, widow of the late Isaac Bowman, was born in Berlin, Ont., in 1830; died July 6, 1909; aged 79 y. 1 m. 2 d. She is survived by five sons and four daughters. She was a faithful sister in the Mennonite Church. Funeral services were conducted in the Berlin Mennonite Church, by Noah Stauffer and Simon Swartz. Text, Psa. 16: 11 and Mark 14: 8. Buried in cemetery near Hagy Church.

Brubacher.-Magdalena Eby Brubacher was born July 22, 1831, near Kitchener, Ont. Oct. 15, 1926, she peacefully passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Reuben Eby, St. Jacobs, Ont.; aged 95 y. 2 m. 23 d. She had been able to be up and around till nearly 17 months ago when she took her bed and since she was never able to be up. Sept. 28, 1856, she was married to Jacob M. Brubacher who preceded her in death Dec. 10, 1889. This union was blessed with 3 sons and 2 daughters, of whom 1 son preceded her in infancy and Martin 19 months ago. Those left to mourn her departure are: Mrs. Christian Schiefle, and Mrs. Reuben Eby, St. Jacobs, Ont.; William H., of Rodney, Ont.; also one step-sister, Mrs. Phillip Cress, Phillips, Wis.; 23 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Oct. 17, at the Old Order Mennonite Church, Conestoga, and at the Riverside cemetery for burial. Funeral services were conducted by Urias Martin ant the house and by Israel Weber and Ezra Martin at the Church. Texts, I Pet. 3: 4; I Thess. 4: 13.

Rev. Solomon Eby, "the eldest in the family, was born May 15th, 1834. When a young man he joined the Old Mennonite Church, of which body, some years thereafter, he was ordained minister. Some twenty years ago, on account of some difference of opinion between him and the authorities of the church, he was separated from that body, and afterwards became one of the instruments in the organization of what is at present known as the church of the Mennonite Brethren in Christ, usually called New Mennonites, of which body he was the first Presiding Elder. He was re-elected as Presiding Elder for quite a number of years in succession, but at present he is stationed on the Bethel, Ontario, field of labor where he is doing a grand work for the Lord. As a minister he has few superiors, speaks in both languages, and his sermons are full of life and spirit, refreshing to souls craving for spiritual manna. Eby, Solomon (1834-1931)

Solomon Eby (15 May 1834-1931) was one of the founders of the Mennonite Brethren in Christ Church (now Evangelical Missionary Church), the son of Benjamin and Elizabeth (Cressman) Eby. He was born May 15, 1834 in Waterloo Co., ON, was raised on the farm, and attended public school. On June 17, 1855 he married Catharine Shantz, and they had 12 children. He moved to Port Elgin, ON.

In 1858 he was ordained to the ministry in the Mennonite Church, and served in that capacity for 14 years. According to his testimony, he was not converted until eleven years after his ordination (1869, Port Elgin, ON). Following his conversion he became a zealous advocate for a definite religious experience. Eventually he was expelled from the Mennonite Church, and in 1874 he and Daniel Brenneman of Indiana organized the Reformed Mennonites, a group that later became a part of the Mennonite Brethren in Christ Church (now the Evangelical Missionary Church).

For various terms totaling 18 years Eby was presiding elder in the Ontario Conference, and for 14 years he served as pastor, holding pastorates at Breslau, Elmwood, New Dundee, Markham, and Kitchener circuits. He was a member of the first six general conferences, and was chairman of the first one (Zionsville, PA, 1885). Eby retired from active work in 1906. A few years later he became interested in the Pentecostal movement, and in 1912 he transferred his membership to that organization. He died in 1931.

Wanner Mennonite Church
Begun: 1829

A small wooden meeting house was built in 1829 on a corner of the farm belonging to Samuel Bechtel which was located in the vicinity of the present-day regional headquarters of the Ministry of Natural Resources near the intersection of Highways 24 and 401. The site for this community meeting house, as well as a school and a burial ground, had been chosen on August 8, 1829. The land was donated by Samuel Bechtel and his wife Barbara (Baumann) on March 15, 1830. A new meeting house, of white brick, was built in 1837 on the east side of Henry Wanner's farm, somewhat north of the first meeting house. Meetings at first were held every eight weeks. The deed of land for the meeting house known as Wanner's was dated October 15, 1837. Early preachers were David Sherk, who had been ordained by Benjamin Eby in July 1837, Jacob Bretz, Jr., and Joseph Hagey.

Joseph Hagey was ordained bishop in 1851. During his time divisions occurred in the church by a surge of enthusiasm for a Methodist form of revivalism. Solomon Eby of Port Elgin, who announced his own conversion in December 1869, was leader of a group which believed that members could be converted through participation in revival meetings. John Baer of Wanner's became associated with Solomon Eby, and was compelled to leave the church in the spring of 1874, as were Eby and his other followers. The new church movement resulted in organization conferences which culminated in the conference on March 23, 1875 at Bloomingdale where New Mennonites and Reforming (or Reformed) Mennonites joined together as United Mennonites. The United Mennonites favored revival meetings, Sunday Schools and prayer meetings, and were opposed to the use of alcohol and tobacco.

The date of construction of the meeting house which replaced the one built in 1837 is somewhat in doubt. It is possible that a new building was erected in the early 1870s; it is also possible that the 1837 building only underwent extensive renovations at that time. There is no doubt, however, that a new brown brick church was built in 1938. An education wing was added in 1969.

The earliest Mennonite Sunday School in North America was begun in 1842 and was held jointly by the Wanner and Hagey Meeting Houses. It was discontinued after a short time because of a division of opinion within the congregations. An attempt was made later, in the mid-1860s, to begin another Sunday School, but this, too, did not last long. Many years later, on June 10, 1896, a meeting was held to organize a Sunday School. Bloomingdale (Schneider or Snyder) Mennonite Church

Services began in 1824, and in 1826 a first meeting house, known as Schneider's or Snyder's, was built northwest of Bloomingdale, and east of the Grand River, on land (part Lot 7) donated by Jacob Schneider. Henry Weber was the first minister to this congregation, from 1824 until 1854. He was followed by Moses Erb who was ordained minister to the congregation on April 14, 1854. The church building was primarily used as a school in the beginning; the first teacher was John Bauman from Pennsylvania. Church services were held in homes. Dorothy Sauder, in her 1972 history of the church, states that "Prior to 1860, Schneider's was the only [Mennonite] place of worship on the Grand River and, until the 1889 Martin schism, it was one with the Martin congregation with ministers serving both groups" (Sauder 1972: 8). Services were held on a two-week schedule, at one meeting house and then at the other.

Snyder's was affected by division in the church in the early 1870s. The majority of the congregation joined the Reforming (or Reformed) Mennonites, a group organized by Solomon Eby on May 15, 1874, and from 1875-1879 the meeting house was used almost exclusively by them. It was here that the conference was held on March 23, 1875 in which the New Mennonites and the Reforming (or Reformed) Mennonites joined together as the United Mennonites. However, because the original deed to the church property had been lost or perhaps never duly executed, a new deed was drawn up on January 15, 1879, giving ownership of building and property to the group of more conservative Mennonites in the congregation.

The present church was built in 1878 on approximately the same site as the first meeting house. Renovations to the church building were carried out in 1951. One main entrance, to replace the two separate entrances, was part of the changes made. Further improvements were made in 1985. The name of the church is now Bloomingdale Mennonite Church.

Breslau Missionary Church

Meetings are reported to have been held in 1872 in a building at the corner of Woolwich Street and Mader Lane by a group who were followers of Solomon Eby. Conferences to consider reorganization of the church were held in 1874 and 1875, the most important of which was considered to have been the meeting at the Bloomingdale Mennonite Church on May 23, 1875. Members of the New Mennonites and the Reforming (or Reformed) Mennonites joined together at that meeting as the United Mennonites. At a meeting in Blair in 1879 a union, called the Evangelical United Mennonites, was formed from the United Mennonites and the Evangelical Mennonites. Four years later, in 1883, the Ohio Brethren in Christ (Tunker) joined with the Evangelical United Mennonites to form the Mennonite Brethren in Christ.

Dedication services were held on Christmas Day, 1882, for the new Breslau Mennonite Church which had been built during the year. Henry Goudie was minister to the congregation from 1881-1884. He was followed by Peter Geiger (1884-1885) and Frank Moyer (1885-1886). Solomon Eby, a member of the congregation who was minister from 1886-1889, had been one of the organizers on May 15, 1874 of the Reforming Mennonites.

On May 6, 1959 a decision was made to construct an 1800 square foot addition to the church. The sanctuary was enlarged and new pews were installed in 1978; dedication was in September of that year. Rev. Leonard DeWitt, president of the Missionary Church was guest speaker on Sunday, November 21, 1982, when the church's 100th Anniversary service was held. Of interest: the sign eteched in the glass above the doors on the northwest side of the back section reads "United Missionary Church."

Pioneer Minister Dies At Kitchener

Another link with the pioneer history of Waterloo County was severed when Rev. Solomon Eby, one of the founders of the Mennonite Brethren in Christ Church, and Kitchener's oldest minister died in his 97th year. Death occurred after a comparatively short illness. Until a year ago deceased was able to read the finest print without glasses.

Rev. Mr. Eby was born in 1834, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Eby, who settled in Waterloo County in 1804, coming here from Pennsylvania. He was ordained a minister in 1858 at the age of 24. He continued as a preacher in the Old Mennonite church until 1872, when he was excommunicated because of the radically different doctrines which he was promulgating at that time. When this occurred he gathered others who were of the same belief and formed the Mennonite Brethren in Christ Church. He was a leader in this church for years, serving 18 years as presiding elder of the Ontario Conference and filling pastorates at Breslau, Elmwood, Bethel, Markham and Kitchener. In 1912 he withdrew from this denomination, having embraced the doctrines of the Pentecostal Assembly, of which he was a member at the time of his death. He was an ordained minister for 78 years, but was not an active preacher for the past 15 years, although he frequently delivered short sermons and exhortations up to a year ago.

He is survived by four children, Josiah and Jeremiah, two sons; Miss Lydia and Mrs. John Kimmel, all of Kitchener.

Rev. Elias Eby, "was born May 4th 1850. He was converted in his early days. In March, 1870, he joined the Evangelical Church, and entered the ministry in 1876. He was the first stationed on the Sebringville (Ontario) Circuit where he remained seven months, and the remainder of the year he was stationed on the Bentinck (Ontario) Mission. In 1877 he was stationed on the Middleton Mission, and during 1878-79 he was a local. In 1880 he was again stationed on the Sebringville Circuit, and during the years 1881-82 he labored on the Maitland Mission. During the years 1883-85 he was stationed on the Pembroke Mission, and during the years 1886-87 on the Niagara Mission. In the spring of 1888 the conference placed him on the Morriston Mission. From here he was placed on the Carrick field of labor, and in April 1895, he was stationed on the Dashwood field of labor where he is now working. So far he has proved successful in the ministry. May he still continue doing work for our Lord. On April 22nd, 1879, he was married to Margaret Bender who was born February 17th, 1851. He has a family of four children, namely: Sibylla, born May 30th, 1880; Edwin, born August 19th, 1881; Laurinda, born April 20th, 1884; and Oscar, born June 14th, 1886."

This week we are called upon to chronicle the death of one of the older residents of St. Jacobs in the person of Mr. Noah W. Gingrich, who passed away very suddenly early Sunday morning at his home her, in his seventy second year. He was born near Conestogo in 1842. He served as an apprentice in the woolen business in Hawkesville, after which he worked at the trade in Battersea, Peterboro and South Bend, Indiana. In partnership with Mr. D. L. Weber he conducted the woolen mill at Chicopee for some years, after which he and Mr. E. W. B. Snider carried on a woolen trade in Nottaway, Grey Co., conjointly with the woolen mill in St. Jacobs. The woolen mill in St. Jacobs was conducted by Mr. Gingrich until a few years ago when it was taken over by the Canada Felting Co., when he retired from business. This spring he disposed of his old home to the Bank of Nova Scotia and had got comfortably settled in his fine new home on Yonge St., when the call came calmly in the morning twilight to transfer his abode into better realms above. Mr. Gingrich had always been an industrious and progressive citizen, an ardent Liberal in politics, an adherent of the Evangelical church, and as a sportsman he had few equals as a successful angler. In 1872 he married Miss Catherine Weber, who is left behind with a family of three sons and five daughters to mourn the loss of a devoted husband and father. The children are: Colin, in North Bay, Harvey in St. Jacobs, Edwin in Jansen, Sask., Mrs. N. S. Snyder, Toronto, Mrs. P. E. Bowman, St. Jacobs, Mrs. Seaman, Rochester, N. Y., Edith in Toronto, and Alice at home. Besides his wife and eight children he is survived by three brothers and four sisters and ten grandchildren. The funeral service conducted by Rev. W. O. Hehn was held on Wednesday at 2.30 p.m., from his late residence to the Evangelical cemetery for interment, and was largely attended by is old friends and neighbors. The pall-bearers were: Messrs. S. Weber, M. L. Weber, D. Weber, J. C. Shelley, W. H. Winkler, and F. E. Welker.

N. W. GINGRICH

This name is familiar to nearly every man, woman and child for a good many miles around, and St. Jacobs has no citizen more popular. Mr. Gingrich was born in Woolwich Township, Nov. 14th 1842. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. David Gingrich, came to Canada when quite young from Lancaster, Pa, sometime early in 1800. The subject of this sketch learned what hard work was until he was past sixteen years of age when he commenced to learn the woolen trade, March 18, 1859, with John Brubacher, who was running what were known as the Crystal Springs Woolen Mills and now as Tanner's tannery, near Hawksville. He remained there four years. He then went to Michigan on a visit to his brothers, John and Eli. He got as far as Iona from where he took the stage to Greenville, a distance of 20 miles, arriving there about midnight. The next morning he started on a forty mile tramp for his brothers' homes, and reached the home of one Hinton at night after completing a distance of thirty miles on foot. The next morning he started from Hinton's on a ten mile tramp through an entirely uninhabited country, reaching his brothers about noon He remained there until the middle of May after which he returned to Ontario and in the following June commenced to work for Jacob Eby in the woolen mills near the site of the old saw mill in St. Jacobs in 1863. In the fall of 1863 and forepart of the winter of 1864 he attended school at Floradale. The following March he accepted a position with Wenger & Weaver a Elmira, working there until the following August, when he worked for his uncle, Jacob Gingrich, in harvest and then he picked up his "traps" an started for Caledonia, Mich., where for over a year he had his home with Rev. Abraham Detweiler and worker as a general farm hand during the winter of 1864 . He remained there until the fall of 1865, when he and one Isaac Wenger went to Indiana where he visited his relatives and to some time worked for one Christ Good formerly of Conestogo. In the fore part of 1866 he was employed with Jos. Shirk in Elkhart County, Ind driving team and hauling saw logs, etc In the following March he commenceed working at his trade in South Bend and remained there until the fall following, when he went to Waukan Wis., on a visit to his uncle Peter Weaver. He then came back to Canada and again worked for J. and H Brubacher at Crystal Springs in 1867 For two months be worked for McCullough & Wilson of Hawksville. In the winter of 1867 he was collecting for the latter firm a month or two, and in the following summer when they moved to St. Jacobs became also and engaged with them in the spring of 1867 and continued until 1868. The firm then sold the property and purchased the Chicopee mills where he again was employed as collector for them, and went into the factory in the spring of 1869 and remained there until the following year when he went to Waterloo and made cigars for one Moyer one year. In 1871 he worked for the Waterhouse and Bradberry Woolen Mills of Ingersoll. He then went to work for Dan Brooks at Peterborough where he was engaged until May 23, when he obtained position in the Battersea Woolen Mills, 16 miles north of Kingston. In September following be returned to Peterborough where he accepted his old place and worked there until Christmas. He then went back to Chicopee. He was married on 16th 1872 Catherine, daughter of Jacob Weaver and on the 18th he moved to Chicopee where he worked for Mr. Brubacher five years. In February 1877, he and Mr. Weaver purchased what is known as Chicopee Mills and carried it on under the name Gingrich & Weaver for four years. In the spring of 1881 he bought the St. Jacobs mills and has operated them ever since. He built the new store room he now occupies in 1890 at a cost of $2,800, and a new addition to his residence in 1892 making it about one of the largest brick residence in the village. His store room is stocked to its utmost with fabrics, hoisery, yarn, etc. of almost every description, and he is now making specialty flannels that he says cannot be excelled anywhere for quality and durability. He and his wife been blessed with nine children four sons and five daughters, but the younger son died in 1890. All are at home except their daughter Olive, who is the wife of Mr. Noah Snyder of Toronto. Two of his sons Colin and Edwin are working in the woolen mill and Harvey is employed in J. L. Wideman's drug store. Three of them are accomplished musicians, being members of the St. Jacobs musical society.

Brubacher. - Mrs. Jonas Brubacher was born in Waterloo County, Ont., March 31, 1847; died Nov. 6, 1922, at Brutus, Mich. She was a constant member of the Mennonite Church. In 1866 she married Jonas Brubacher who preceded her to the spirit world 7 years ago. She leaves to mourn her loss 4 sons, 2 daughters, 26 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted at Eli Burkhart's where she had her home. Text, "I have fought a good fight,.I have kept the faith." Interment in Maple River cemetery.

After John's death, Susannah returned to Woolwich Township, and gave her three children out for adoption. Noah was adopted by Moses Gingrichs; David by Elias Baumans; Lovina by Samuel Reists. She went to work at John S Brubachers, and took with her an invalid son, Johnny. He is buried in the St. Jacob's Mennonite Cemetery beside the Three Bridges School, St.Jacobs. Susannah's immigrant ancestor was Ulrich Gingrich from Alsace. On Oct 18, 1891, she married Abram Martin.

Respected Farmer Dead

The sad death took place Thursday last of Martin E. Brubacher, a well known and highly esteemed farmer of Woolwich Township, following a short illness. The funeral took place Sunday afternoon to the St. James Lutheran church for service thence to St. James' cemetery for interment. The late Mr. Brubacher was born in Woolwich township, May 26, 1857. A sorrowing wife and six children survive, namely Mrs. Henry Ziegler, of Floradale, Claire of Elmira, Mabel, Cranson, William and Florence at home; also his aged mother, Mrs. Magdalena Brubacher, of St. Jacobs, two sisters Mrs. Reuben Eby and Mrs. Christ. Scheifele of St. Jacobs, and one brother, W. H. Brubacher of Rodney.

Former Dresden Man Dies at Rodney Home

DRESDEN, March 15. The news of the death of W. H. Brubacker of Rodney was received by friends here.

Mr. Brubacker was very well known to people of Dresden and surrounding district, as he conducted the creamery just north of the town for several seasons.

Mr. Brubacker has been ill for some time and passed away on Tuesday morning at his home in Rodney. He is survived by his widow and two grown- up children at home.

JOSIAH SITTLER

Josiah Sittler, 88, died Wednesday, June 7, at Martin's Rest Home, Elmira, after a brief illness.

Born in Wallace Township May 10, 1873, he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Sittler.

He farmed in Hawkesville for the past 30 years.

Mr. Sittler married Lydia Frey in 1901, and she died the following year, In 1903 he married Veronica Martin, who died in 1922. He married Rachel Wagler in 1923. She survives.


Also surviving are three sons, Henry of St. Jacobs, William of Elmira and Josiah of Britton; two daughters, Mrs. Wesley (Elvina) Metzger of Elmira and Elizabeth of Wallenstein; a brother, Noah of Hawkesville; a sister Mrs. Isiah Gregory of Yatton; five grandchilren and six great-grandchildren.

The body was at the Dreisinger Funeral Home Elmira until Friday when removal was made to the home of Noah Sittler, Hawkesville. Memorial service was conducted there Friday, and then at the South Peel Mennonite Meeting House. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.

DEATH. A very sad death took place in our village on Monday morning, when the late Solomon Sittler passed away at the home of his mother, on King St. The deceased was only in his 38th year, and had been suffering from cancer for some time. Previous to coming here, he resided in Hawkesville and Conestogo and was well and favorably known in these places as well as here. The funeral will be held this (Wednesday) afternoon to Conestogo Mennonite Church for service and burial. Five young children are left to mourn the loss of a kind and loving father, the mother having died about a year ago at Conestogo. They have the sympathy of their many friends and the people in this community.

Noah G. Sittler of Hawkesville died Thursday at his home after a lengthy illness. He was 89.

Born May 13, 1879, he had been a resident of the Hawkesville area his entire life.
He was a member of the Old Order Mennonite Church.

Mr. Sittler was predeceased by the first wife, the former Lydia Martin whom he married Jan. 18, 1903, in 1934. Surviving are his second wife, the former Esther Martin whom he married in 1940; three sons, Irvin of Hawkesville, Alvin of RR 1, Elmira, and Noah of Conestogo; two daughters, Mrs. Henry K. (Susana) Brubacher of Hawkesville and Mrs. John (Nancy) Bowman of RR 1, Elmira; one sister, Mrs. Isaish[sic] (Magdelene) Gregory of Fergus; 14 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.

The body was at the Dreisinger Funeral Parlor, Elmira, until noon Thursday when removal was made to the Sittler residence for a service Saturday at 9 a.m. Following the service removal was made to the Peel Mennonite Church for the funeral service. Burial was in the church cemetery.

ST. JACOBS, Nov. 15. - Mrs. Lydiann Kerchner, wife of Michael Kerchner, of St. Jacobs died yesterday afternoon after a short illness at St. Mary's Hospital, at the age of 58 years. A daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Sittler of Wellesley Township, she was born in Wellesley Township March 14, 1890. She was married Jan 5, 1916 at St. Jacobs, resided near Bamberg, then moved to St. Jacobs in 1919. Surviving are her husband, one son, Wellington Lloyd of St. Jacobs and a daughter, Mrs. Larry (Virginia) Brooks of near Huntsville, one grandchild, two brothers, Josiah and Noah of Hawkesville and one sister, Mrs. Isaiah Gregory of Yatton. Mrs. Kerchner was a faithful member of the Evangelical United Brethern[sic] church and an active member of the Ladies Aid Society and W.S.W.S. The funeral will be held Wednesday at 2 o'clock with a private service at the home, thence to St. Jacobs Evangelical United Brethern[sic] Church for public service. Burial will be in the Evangelical Cemetery at Heidelberg. Rev. A.E. Pletch will officiate. The body will rest at the Dreisinger Funeral Parlor until Tuesday morning at 11 o'clock when removal will be made to the residence.

Mrs. Solomon Lichty

St Jacobs, April 3 - Mrs Solomon Lichty, age 65, died suddenly Friday evening at the home of her daughter, Mrs Noah Sauder, St. Jacobs. Born in Waterloo Township, she was the only daughter of the late David P. Martin and Rebecca Gingerich. Surviving are her husband, six daughters, Mrs. John (Lucinda) Sauder, St Jacobs, Mrs Norman (Susannah) Knarr, Waterloo, Mrs. Isaiah (Ermina) Martin, Drayton, Mrs. Ezra (Mary Ann) Martin, Mrs. Abram (Rebecca) Martin, R.R.#1 Elmira, Mrs. Noah (Hannah) Sauder, St Jacobs; three sons, Leander of R.R.1, Elmira, Solomon of Waterloo, and Orvie of R.R.1, Elmira. One son and one daughter died in infancy. Also surviving are two brothers, David of Waterloo and Peter of Hawkesville. Two brothers predeceased her. There are 23 grandchildren. Funeral service will be Monday at 9: 30 a.m. at the late residence thence to the Elmira meetinghouse for public service. Interment at the adjoining cemetery.

ISRAEL G. MARTIN

Israel G. Martin, 56, Hawkesville merchant, died suddenly at his home Tuesday.

Born in Baden, Ontario, March 20, 1895, he was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Abraham Martin. He lived in Elmira before moving to Hawkes- ville 21 years ago. He was an active member of the Linwood United Church.

Surviving are his wife, the former Florence Tyack, two sisters, Miss Angeline Martin of Hawkesville and Mrs. Lovina Reist of Elmira, and one brother, Noah Kraemer, of near Floradale. The body is at the Dreisinger Funeral Parlor until Friday morning at 10.00 a.m. when removal will be made to Hawkesville Mennonite Church where funeral services will be held at 2.30 p.m. It is requested to please omit flowers. Burial will be in Hawkesville Cemetery. Rev. Gor- don Weir of Linwood United Church and Rev. Paul Martin of Hawkes- ville Mennonite Church will officiate.
