    Weber, Urias K. (1879-1971)

Urias K. Weber (1879-1971), the son of Menno S. and Sarah (Knipe) Weber, married Magdalena Shoemaker. In 1907 he was chosen a minister by lot in the First Mennonite Church at Berlin (Kitchener), ON. The lot had earlier fallen on his father, who had refused to accept the call. Urias Weber's only formal pastoral education consisted of less than a year of study at Moody Bible Institute (1910). At First Mennonite Church he preached in the English services only.

In 1924 a controversy arose over whether members must wear uniform "plain dress " while working in factories and offices. After Weber admitted to communion some who did not wear the prescribed garb (an action taken contrary to instructions from Ontario bishops), he was silenced until the next session of conference. Approximately half of the congregation chose to form a new, unaffiliated congregation and asked Weber to be the minister. He served as pastor of the Stirling Avenue Mennonite Church , 1924-42, and as pastor emeritus from 1942 until his death.

WEBER, John Franklin - 1913-2007. John Weber passed from this world, at the age of 94, on January 31, 2007, at Victoria Hospital. John was predeceased by his sister, Eileen and brothers, Norman and Alson. Left to mourn his passing is his loving wife Elinore; sons, Bob and Bill; daughters-in-law, Norma and Karen and his three grandchildren, Steven, Larissa and David of Winnipeg. He is also survived by his nephews, John, Jim and Ross of Waterloo and their families and his nieces Joan and Kathy of Calgary and their families. John worked for Mutual Life of Canada before heeding the call of his country in the Second World War joining the R.C.A.F. at the outbreak of the War. He rose to the rank of Squadron Leader and was responsible for the training of Allied pilots at Trenton and in England during the Battle of Britain. He met his wife Elinore in the Air Force and they wed in 1943. Upon his return to civilian life, he worked as Office Manager and Supervisor of Group Sales for the Mutual Life where he worked until his retirement in 1978. John was a dedicated husband, father and grandfather and had many passions in this life, the greatest of which was music. He followed this dream as a young man playing the trumpet in bands in Ontario. Living in Manitoba, John was a member of the Fort Garry United Church Choir for over half a century and was an ardent singer in Barbershop quartets, being a lifetime member of the S.P.E.B.Q.S.A. John's other passion was golf which he played, like many of us, with varying degrees of proficiency. John was a long time member of the Wildewood Club where he spent endless hours, from March to November, enjoying the fresh air, sunshine, and companionship of good friends and family. John will be remembered by all he met as a kind and considerate man and we all mourn his passing. A service commemorating his life was held at Fort Garry United Church on Tuesday, February 6, 2007.

K Hettler recalls:: The youngest was my dad, Norman. All were raised on their parents' farm but only dad wanted to pursue agriculture as a career and I believe he was the only one who went to college/university. (I don't know what training Eileen had.) He worked in the animal barns at Guelph (Ontario Agricultural College) to help pay his tuition. After the second world war broke out, he felt he should enlist even though Mennonites are pacifists, but didn't join until 1942 or 43. Married my mom (Gladys Emma Perschbacher) July 1943 and she followed him across Canada to a couple of military bases for training but then he went overseas to England. Joan was born December 1944 and I know Dad didn't see her until she was 8 months' old, once the war was over. He was a navigator with the Royal Canadian Air Force. Dad got hired with the Canada Malting Company in Toronto but got moved to Montreal sometime before I was born October 1947. They moved to Calgary, AB in 1950 when he got the job as Malster & then Plant Superintendent for the C.M. company there. They were both members of the United Church all their lives and sang in the choir (Mom also was fill-in organist) until their 70's I think.

Norman married Gladys Emma Perschbacher 16 Jul 1943, Waterloo City, Waterloo Region, Ontario, Canada. An investigation following the war, however, revealed that Shantz, along with five other airmen, were killed when their plane was shot down. They were buried together at Amelsbueren, Germany, though a seventh man survived the rest of the war in a POW camp.
