Pioneer Park (Weber/Strasburg) Christian Fellowship Mennonite Church

Early services were held in the homes of the first settlers, perhaps as early as 1833. Services often were held at the home of David Weber who lived across from where the church would be located. David Sherk was ordained deacon to serve the group in 1837, and in the next year, 1838, he was ordained minister. He was followed in 1840 by John Steckle (Stoeckle).

In 1842, David Weber donated one acre of land for a meeting house and burial ground. The deed was dated March 23, 1854, although the meeting house had been built in 1843. A new yellow brick church was built in 1894 on the same site. Noah Stauffer, who had been ordained in 1876 to assist John Steckle, was minister at the time. A Sunday School was organized in the 1890s; Sunday School records date from 1898. In 1899 the first Bible Conference to be held in an Ontario Mennonite church was held in the Weber church.

In 1971-1972 the church was enlarged and completely renovated. During that time - from October 17, 1971 to January 23, 1972 - the congregation met in the Herbert Feick home on Doon Village Road. On September 24, 1872 the congregation celebrated the 130th Anniversary of the building of the first meeting house. The name of the church was changed to Pioneer Park Christian Fellowship Mennonite Church in 1972.

In 1951 the congregation had purchased from Clifford Snider an additional acre of land located behind the church. In 1976, for the sum of $1, the congregation acquired a sixty-five foot strip of land along the south edge of the church property from Major Holdings & Development Co. A new church was built within several feet of the old yellow brick one which was removed; the date on the cornerstone is 1980. The 150th Anniversary of the construction of the first meeting house is to be celebrated in 1993.

Built about 1840, it has stone walls and a stencilled ceiling in the home's main room. The stencilled ceiling has been identified as the work of John Moser and 1860's era painter who died similar work in a house restories in the 1970's in Cobourg.<sup>1a

Joseph Weber," was born August 9th, 1822, and died March 2nd, 1876. He was married to Anna, daughter of Henry and Salome (Baumann) Weber, October 22nd, 1845. She was born November 19th, 1824, and died October 13th, 1886. They resided on part of lot No. 64, German Company's Track, Waterloo County. The farm is now possessed by John S. Brubacher who is married to one of their adopted daughters. They had no family of their own but raised four children, namely: Susannah Kinzie who was born April 24th, 1847, and was married to Joshua Snyder; Anna Edy who was born March 24th, 1854, and married to John S. Brubacher; Jane Elbert who was born April 1st, 1863; and Catharine Magdalena Murphy who is married to Samuel K. Brubacher. On June 26th, 1868, Mr Weber was ordained as deacon of the Mennonite body. He held this position until his death which took place March 2nd, 1876."

WISMER - On the 26th of Feb., 1901, in Berlin, Ontario, of infirmities of old age, Elizabeth W. Wismer, widow of David Wismer, aged 77 years, 6 months and 3 days. To this union were born four sons and three daughters, all living; also thirty-three grandchildren. Services in the Chr. Eby M.H., at Berlin, by E.S. Hallman and J.B. Gingrich from 2 Tim. 4:7, 8. Mary Weber Wildfang Mrs, (Rev.) Levi Wildfang, the oldest resident in Tavistock, died on Feb, 13th, at her home on Maria Street, at the ripe age of 93 years and 10 days. Deceased was born at Strassburg, Waterloo County on the 3rd of Feb. 1825. In the year 1850 she was married to Levi Wildfang, who preceded her in death three years ago. To this union, seven children were born of which, three preceded her to their eternal home. Shortly after they were married, the young couple moved into the wilds of Zorra, and then cleared up a farm near the Village of Tavistock, where they lived with the exception of three years spent in the service in the Canada Conference of the Evangelical Association. About 36 years ago they moved to Tavistock, to spend their declining years in quietness. In 1852 she was soundly converted and was a faithful member of the Evangelical Association until the summons came to join the innumerable host of the redeemed. Deceased shared the joys and burdens of an Evangelical Preacher's life for a number of years, when her husband's health failed and they were compelled to retire from active service. Mrs. Wildfang was a practical Christian, having developed such by the long and trying years of pioneer days. She was a student of the Bible. The Bible was to her, the living Word of God. In it she found inspiration and strength for her soul life, light for her pathway and comfort in every hour of trial and suffering. The children are: Mary (Mrs. Geo. Stabler) Tavistock; Lydia (Mrs. Menno Kaufman) Elmwood; Noah, Elmwood; and Moses Wildfang, of Kitchener, Ont. Her brothers, Noah. Weber, Listowel; Amos Weber, Strassburg. The funeral took place from her late residence on Friday afternoon, Feb, 15, to Zion Evangelical Cemetery. A memorial service was held in Zion Evangelical Church, conducted by the Pastor, Rev. A. D. Gischler, assisted by Rev's W, J. Yager and D. Kreh, of Stratford.

In January, 1856 they moved on part lot No. 102, German Company's Tract, Woolwich Township, north-west of Elmira. Here they resided ever since. He has been one of the councillors for the township of Woolwich for a number of years, and has been first deputy reeve since January, 1891. They have a family of six children"

Another Woolwich Pioneer Gone

Again, as has been the case so often during this year, we are called upon to chronicle the death of one who has gone well past the allotted three score and ten. We refer to Aaron Weber, who passed away early on Tuesday morning.

Deceased was born at Strassburg, Waterloo County, on the 10th of September, 1833, On October .20th, 1855, he was married to Mary Weaver, who died about nine years ago. They settled on the farm where the subject of this sketch died, and there they spent the remainder of their lives. The union was blessed with one daughter and five sons. The daughter, Matilda, was married to Reuben Snider, Conestogo and died about four years ago. The sons are: Ephraim. near Elmira; Reuben, near Glenallan; Josiah, near Patton; Sidney, on the old homestead, and Israel, on a farm near the same, Seventeen grandchildren survive the deceased.

Mr. Weber in his younger days took a considerable interest in municipal and educational affairs. He was for a number of years a member of the Woolwich Township Council, Occupying the office of Deputy Reeve for several years, and that of reeve one year. He was also a member of the Elmira Public school board for some time. In both his private and public life he strove to do his duty and enjoyed in a high degree the respect of his fellow citizens. As a neighbor be was always willing to do others a good turn. Be enjoyed good health until some what over a year ago when he was troubled with sciatica. Added to this, he fell and broke his hip nearly a year ago.Since then he has been in bed, often suffering severe pain and gradually becoming weaker until the end came.

The funeral is being held thi: (Thursday) afternoon. A large nuntber of friends and neighbors are paying a the ,last tribute to f departed friend.

Weber.--Noah Weber was born in Waterloo Co., Ont., Sept. 24, 1835; died at Strasburg, Ont., Jan. 26, 1925; aged 89 y. 4 m. 2 d. He was united in marriage with Elizabeth Kolb Apr. 4, 1858, who predeceased him in 1885. To this union were born nine children, three having preceded him to the glory world. There remain to mourn his loss six children, 28 grandchildren, and 53 great-grandchildren. Brother Weber united with the Mennonite Church nearly thirty years ago and remained true to the faith until God called him home. The funeral was held from his late home in Strasburg on Jan. 28, to the Weber Meeting house for services and adjoining cemetery for burial. Services conducted by Bro. Oscar Burkholder.

....… passing away of another of the loved and respected residents of this place. On Nov. 18th Mr. E. W. B. Snider, daughter Ada and her mother left here for Rochester, Minn., where Mrs. Snider intended taking a course of treatment of cancer. Upon the advice of relatives and friends they changed their point of destination, going to Battle Creek, Mich., where one of the best hospitals is located. Upon examination by the specialists, an operation was decided upon and was preformed about a week before her death. At first there seemed hopes for prolonging her life at least a short time. But a turn for the worse set in and on Thursday morning, Nov. 28th, the deceased passed peacefully to her reward. The late Mrs. Snider was born near Strasburg, where she was united in marriage to her bereaved husband 48 years ago. She had been a resident of St. Jacobs ever since. The husband, six sons and four daughters, mourn her sudden demise. The children are: Alfred, Brantford; Cranson, Fernardo and Edwin of Waterloo; William, Elias, Mrs. Alfred Snyder, Misses Ada, Lola and Amy, St. Jacobs. The deceased was of a retiring and kind disposition and was loved by all who knew her. The funeral, which took place on Monday to the Evangelical cemetery, was largely attended by near friends and relatives. The service was conducted by Rev. W.O. Hehn. Five of the (word missing in original) and the son-in-law acted as pallbearers.

Oberholtzer. - Mary Ann Wismer Oberholtzer was born in Waterloo Co., Ont., May 20, 1844; fell asleep in Christ Feb. 26, 1926, at her home in Kitchener, Ont.; aged 81 y. 9 m. 6 d. She united with the Mennonite Church in her youth, being at least 60 years in church fellowship, and was one of its pioneer Sunday school teachers and lived to see the second generation of those she taught. Grandma greatly enjoyed the blessings of the Christian life until the day she left to be with the Lord, and she was dearly beloved by all who knew her. She was married to Isaac Oberholtzer. This union was blessed with three sons and two daughters, all of whom are living. There are also 27 grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren, also 4 brothers and 2 sisters, she being the first of them to go. The date of her death was rather unique in that it fell exactly on the day of the 25th anniversary of her mother's death and the 39th anniversary of her husband's burial. Her funeral which was largely attended was held Feb. 28 at the First Mennonite Church, the services being conducted by Bro. C. F. Derstine from I Pet. 1: 3, 4, assisted by Bro. Noah Stauffer. Peace to her ashes.

Mrs. Menno Kaufman of Paisley, well known in this district, died at her daughter's home there yesterday morning after a lingering illness. Born in Tavistock, the daughter of Rev. and Mrs. Levi Wildfang, deceased lived for some years in that town until her marriage in 1874 to Menno Kaufman who survives with one son, Dr. Stanley Kaufman of Edmonton, Alberta, and one daughter. Mrs. Russell of Paisley. One brother, Mr. M. Wildfang of this city and one sister. Mrs. George Staebler of Buffalo also mourn her loss.

The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at Paisley at two o'clock. burial being made in the Paisley

TAVISTOCK, Aug. 12.\emdash Word was received here yesterday of the death Tuesday at Cleveland, Ohio, of Mrs. George Staebler, 92, a native of Tavistock, and a daughter of the late Rev. and Mrs. Levi Wildfang. Mrs. Staebler lived in Tavistock until her marriage to Mr. Staebler, and then lived in East Zorra for a number of years before returning to her native village

Mr. Staebler died in 1910, and the following year Mrs. Staebler moved to Detroit, Mich., where she lived for some years. Of late years she has been making her home in Cleveland. Surviving are one son, Elmer Staebler of Detroit, and one daughter, Mrs. E. (Viola) Couzens of Cleveland.

The body will arrive in Tavistock Friday and will rest at the James H. Francis Funeral Home until noon Saturday when removal will be made to Zion Evangelical United Brethren Church, where a service will be held at two o'clock in the afternoon, to be followed by burial in the adjoining cemetery. The services will be in charge of the pastor, Rev. W. F. Krotz.

In 1918, an epidemic of flu swept the country and Levi, then 34 years old, died; leaving his wife Sarah with 5 small children to raise and educate. Gladys and Vera became teachers; Lenore became a nurse; Carl worked with the OPP and Earle had an army career in RCR in London as a Major.

Vera taught in the Village School 1929-1934 with 40 pupils, eight grades and Departmental Exams for Entrance to High School. Vera married Frederick G. Improvements were added as times changed. For example, electricity replaced oil lamps, heating from wood (cooking stove), furnace changed from coal to oil; bathroom added; cupboards and kitchen changed (Ledru Beisel in charge), and Grant Morgan renovated the back kitchen to a TVroom. A few years ago he started in the insurance business, in which he continued until the time of his death. During his younger years, he was very active in bowling and curling circles. He was a member of the trustee board of Wesley United Church, Grand River Masonic Lodge, and the Craftsman's Club. He was an amateur entertainer and very fond of music.

WINTERBOURNE. Menno W. Snyder 79 a retired farmer who had resided here for 10 years, died Wednesday morning at K.-W. Hospital. He had been ill a month. Mr. Snyder was born in Winterbourne on Feb. 9, 1860, and had farmed in that district the greater part of his life. Last surviving member of the Joseph Snyder family, he attended the First Mennonite church, Kitchener. Mrs. Snyder predeceased him 13 years. Surviving are three sons, Joseph E. and William R. of West Montrose, and John W. of Winterbourne; and five daughters, Mrs. Sheldon Melitzer of Winterbourne, Mrs. Amy Thrasher of Detroit. Mrs. Elizabeth Macklin and Miss Susan at home and Mrs. Leo Buckridge of Detroit, Nineteen grandchildren also survive.

Book published as dying wish

Even has we approach 100 years since one of Grande Prairie's oldest mysteries, a newly published book is bringing back memories for one family.

When Wally Tansem died in 2001 at the age of 74, a promise was made to him by his wife, Doris, and his daughter Brenda to publish the book he had worked on for the previous 10 years - The Foulest of Murders.

The book depicts background information and detailed investigation from then-North West Mounted Police and the Alberta Police Service on an unsolved murder of six that occurred in Grande Prairie in 1918.

On June 20, 1918, the bodies of Joseph Snyder and his son [nephew actually] Stanley Snyder were discovered charred inside a shack near Grande Prairie. A .38-caliber Ivor Johnson revolver, with five discharged shells in its chambers, was found near the hand of Joseph.

Four days later, Ruthenian minister Frank Parzychowsky and three trappers - Charles Zimner, John Wudwang and Ignace Patan, were found murdered on the Patan farm 6.5 kilometres northwest of the Snyder farm.

The murders have often been referred to as the 'Crime of the Century.'...

Mr. Menno L. Weber was born on a farm a short distance north of Elmira. He attended public school here, after which he served time in a general store at Seaforth. Later he returned to Elmira, clerked for Messrs Ratz & Baetz and subsequently for Mr. James Nichol, until the year 1882, when the partnership of Weber & Erb was formed. Mr. Weber has been an active member of the Elmira Board of Trade since its organization and has since January last held the position of Village Councillor. He is known as an enterprising merchant and a public spirited citizen.

Menno L. Weber Is Laid to Rest On Monday

Prominent Elmira Citizen Dies Friday in 82^nd Year; Active in Municipal Affairs

Menno L. Weber, former Reeve and for many years an active merchant of Elmira, died Friday evening, March 18th, at his home, 27 Park Street, following a short but sudden illness. Mr. Weber would have marked his 82nd birthday on Tuesday of this week.

Mr. Weber was well-known in Elmira and throughout the district. He was born on a farm a mile and half north of Elmira, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Solomon Weber, early pioneers of Waterloo County. Mr. Weber's early days were spent on the farm of his father before he left for Seaforth to learn the mercantile trade.

Returning to Elmira, Mr. Weber started in the mercantile business in 1882, forming a partnership with Alozono Erb. When Mr. Erb died in 1904, Mr. Weber carried on the well-established general store trade until about 1912, when he sold out to J. D. Merner.

Mr. Weber's active interest in community affairs saw him serve Elmira as Reeve, then the highest municipal office in the village. He was also a member of the Elmira Chamber of Commerce and for two years was president of this organization.

For many years he was a director of the Great West Felt Co.

A member of the United Church, Mr. Weber was also Sunday school superintendent in his younger days. He was a Past Grand Brother of the I.O.O.F. He was initiated into the lodge on February 19th, 1879, being a member of the order of 59 years. Mr. Weber attained the highest office in the lodge in 1880, when he was Noble Grand. A few years ago he received his fifty-year jewel for a half century of continuous service to his home lodge and the order in general.

Surviving Mr. Weber are his wife, (nee Margaret Schroder), and four sisters, Mrs. W. Behrens of Elmira, Mrs. W. Baetz of Cleveland, Mrs. E. Walmsley of Chicago and Mrs. A. E. Devitt of Waterloo.

A large number of friends and acquaintances paid final tribute to the memory of Menno Weber when the funeral service was conducted from his late residence on Monday afternoon. The profusion of floral tributes signified the high esteem in which Mr. Weber was held in Elmira and district.

Rev. A. W. Fosbuary, Rev. G. D. Little and Rev. C. H. Cornwell officiated at the service. Mr. Oscar Weichel sang, "Nearer My God to Thee," with piano accompaniment by Mrs. D. D. Ratz. Members of the Elmira I.O.O.F. lodge conducted the ceremony at the grave. Interment was made at the Elmira Cemetery.

WEBER & ERB.

The individual interests of these two well known gentlemen were consolidated on July 28th, 1882. To look at their mammoth establishment of to-day and the small beginning they made in their first business venture the reader is at once reminded of what men of pluck and eminent business qualifications can accomplish. Their first stock of merchandise was kept in a building which has since been converted into a residence that is at present occupied by James Nicol. This they soon found to be too small for their rapidly increasing business, and they moved to the corner building formerly occupied by Mr. J. S. Bauman. At the end of two years they found this building also entirely inadequate to meet the requirements of their constantly increasing trade and they purchased what was then known as the "Ratz Block." To this they erected an addition equal in dimensions to the original building, and which now comprises their two mammoth double stores of 75 feet in length and two stories high. This spacious structure is packed from cellar to garret with foreign and domestic merchandise and seldom do we find such a varied exhibit of that line in a country town. Mr. M. L Weber, the senior member of the firm, was born near Elmira in 1856 and spent, the first fifteen years of his life on the farm. He is a business man from the ground up and an adherent of the Methodist church. He has had a thorough and practical experience in the vocation in which he is now engaged, having for a number of years been connected with some of the prominent mercantile establishments of several of the leading towns and cities of Ontario. Mr. A H. Erb, the junior member, was born in the town of Waterloo, in 1857, his father at that time being in partnership with Mr. John Shuh, at present of that town. Mr. Erb's first business venture was at St. Jacobs in 1876, being associated with Mr. David Betzner in the business formerly carried on by Peter Gleiser. In 1881 the firm sold out to one Ortwein and Mr. Erb became a business partner of Mr. Weber. He was Reeve of the village for six years in succession, and would likely have had the office thrust upon him that many times more had he not declined to further serve in that capacity. In January, 1897, after the county had been divided into districts, he was elected a member of the Council and at the first meeting of the County Council he was unanimously chosen warden of the county, the responsible office of which he is now the incumbent awaiting the appointment of his successor. Messre. Weber & Erb have been in every sence of the word honorable in their personal and business relation with the public in general. They are public spirited, for it cannot be said that in any worthy enterprise that meant increased prosperity for the town they have not shown a liberal hand.

MRS. WILLIAM BEHRENS

- A life-long resident of this district, Mrs. William Behrens died suddenly Thursday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. O.H. Vogt. She was 81 years old. Formerly Susanna Weber, she was a member of Gale Presbyterian congregation.

Surviving are her husband, two sons, B.L. Behrens of Chicago and R.W. Behrens of Elmira, two daughters, Mrs. Vogt and Mrs. R.O. Winn of Kitchener, three sisters, Mrs. William H. Baetz of Cleveland, Mrs. A.E. Devitt of Waterloo and Mrs. C.T. Walmsley of Oak Park, Ill. There are three grandchildren. One daughter, a sister, Mrs. J. Winder of Elmira, and a brother, M.L. Weber of Elmira, predeceased her.

The funeral service was held on Saturday at 2:30 pm from the Dreisinger funeral Chapel. Rev. H.L. Bennie officiated. Burial was made in the Elmira Cemetery.

Mrs. Emma Baetz, 90, Cleveland Heights, Ohio, died at her home, Saturday.

Born in Elmira she was the former Emma Weber, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Solomon Weber. She married W. H. Baetz Who predeceased her in 1938. She was a member of the Glenville Presbyterian Church, Cleveland Heights.

Surviving is one sister, Mrs. C. Walmsley, Oak Park, Ill. Funeral was held at the Dreisinger Funeral Chapel Tuesday at 3 p.m. with Rev. H. L. Simpson of Gale Presbyterian Church, Elmira, officiating. Burial was in Elmira Cemetery.

Mrs. Annie Devitt

Mrs. Annie Devitt, widow of Elvah E. Devitt, formerly of Waterloo, died at the Elmira Private Hospital last night following a brief illness. She was in her 82nd year. Her husband predeceased her five years ago.

She had resided in Elmira since last July.

She is survived by one daughter, Gladys, Mrs. Fred Ruppel of Elmira, two sons, Blake, Cleveland, Ohio, and Reginald in England. Nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren also survive her.

In addition she leaves two sisters, Mrs. W. H. Baetz, Cleveland, Ohio, and Mrs. C. T. Walmsley, Chicago.

One daughter. Mrs. A. C. Mc-Lean, Brantford, predeceased her. Mrs. Devitt was a member of First United Church, Waterloo.

The funeral will be held from the Dreisinger Funeral Chapel Thursday at 2 p m. Rev. A. R. Crags, Waterloo, will conduct the services assisted by Rev. W. M. B. Metcalfe. The body is resting at the funeral parlors. Interment will take place at Waterloo Mt. Hope Cemetery.

Weber.-Ephraim, son of Aaron and Mary Weber, was born near Elmira, Ont., July 27, 1858; died Oct. 16, 1936; aged 78 y. 2 m. 18 d. On March 20, 1883, he was united in marriage to Leah Linder*, who predeceased him in June, 1930. To this union were born 2 sons and 2 daughters (Clayton, Allen and Laura at home, and Lucinda-Mrs. Norman Dettwiler, of Breslau, Ont.). Also surviving are 4 brothers (Reuben, Josiah, Sidney, and Israel, all of Elmira), 1 sister (Matilda-Mrs. Reuben Snider) having predeceased him in 1911. Seven grandchildren also survive. In 1913 he was ordained to the office of deacon of the Floradale Mennonite Church, in which capacity he served faithfully, as long as health permitted. Because of ill health he was confined to his home the last few years, and gradually becoming weaker finally passed on to his reward. Funeral services were held at the home and at the Elmira Mennonite Church, conducted by Brethren Reuben Dettwiler and Oliver D. Snider. Burial in adjoining cemetery.

REUBEN WEBER

There died at his home, at 20 Centre Street, Elmira, on Friday, March 24, 1939, Reuben Weber in his 76th year.

The deceased was born in Woolwich Township, April 23, 1864. He was married to Marion Weber, and they had lived on their farm until 16 years ago, when they came to Elmira to live. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church.

Besides his wife, he leaves to mourn his loss three brothers, Israel, Sydney and Josiah Weber, of Elmira. One daughter predeceased him 10 years ago.

The funeral was held on Monday, March 27^th, from his home on Centre Street, to Elmira Cemetery for interment. Rev. Wright officiated. The pall-bearers were: Ivon Weber, Allan Weber, Clarence Shuh, Orton Weber, Wellington Weber and Arthur Bricker.

Weber. --- Josiah Weber, was born Oct. 13, 1864; died after an illness of a few months; aged 75 y. 6 m. 11 d. On Feb. 26, 1889, he was married to Mary Ann Lichty, who predeceased him in 1921. To this union were born 6 children who survive, namely, Nelson, Orton, Ion, Altana (Mrs. Norman R. Martin), all of Elmira, Pearl (Mrs. Maurice Kinsie) of Breslau, and Ella (Mrs. Reuben Dettwiler) of Floradale. Two brothers (Israel and Sidney of Elmira) also survive. The Lord has been very gracious and longsuffering in lengthening out his days to a time during his last illness, in which he confessed Christ as his personal Saviour, desired baptism, and was received into the Church. And so we mourn not as those who have no hope. Bro. O. D. Snyder conducted the service. Interment in adjoining cemetery.

"WEBER - Weber, -- Sidney, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Weber, was born June 11, 1868; died Oct. 16, 1951, at the home of his son (Wellington), Simcoe, Norfolk Co., Ont., after a short illness; aged 83 y. 4 m. 5 d. He was married to Caroline Wanner and together they farmed near Elmira, Ont., until a few years ago. His wife predeceased him in 1946. Five children were born to them: Wellington, Simcoe, Ont.; Elsie, who died in infancy; Nellie-Mrs.Clarence Shub, Elmira, Ont.; Elizabeth, who died in 1931; and Edith--Mrs.Ephraim Bowan, Ravendale, Sask. Also surviving are 4 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. He was a faithful member of the Elmira, Ont., Mennonite Church until his death, having been one of the pioneers in establishing the work there in 1924. His great desire was to go home to his Lord. The funeral was held Oct. 19 at the Elmira Church, conducted by Oliver D. Snider, assisted by the minister of the First Baptist Church inS imcoe, where he attended services the last few years. FATAL ACCIDENT

On Friday last (April 14, 1893), Bro. Manasseh Weber, of the township of Wilmot, and his hired men were in the woods cutting wood. A tree they were felling struck another tree in its descent and a branch flew back and struck Br. Weber on his head breaking his skull. With difficulty, the hired men partly led and partly carried him home. He died at one o'clock the next morning at the comparatively early age of 34 years, 3 months and 14 days, leaving a sorrowing widow and five small children to mourn their loss. He was a faithful member of the Mennonite church for the last two years. He was buried on the 17th in Weber's cemetery near Strasburg where a large number of people assembled to pay their last tribute of respect. Funeral services were conducted by Moses S. Bowman in German from Matt. 24: 44, and by Noah Stauffer in English from Isa. 28: 29.

Manneses Weber, a farmer living near Plattsville, was struck by a falling limb while engaged at work in the woods last evening, about Five o'clock, and rendered unconcious. His hired man conveyed him to his house, where he died from the effects of his injuries this morning at One o'clock. The unfortunately man is a son of Mr. Noah Weber of Strasburg. He was about 30 years of age and leaves a wife and five children to mourn his untimely end. His funeral will take place on Monday from his late home to the Strasburg Cemetery. The accident has cast a deep sorrow over the entire neighbourhood where he was well known and highly respected.

Pioneer Resident Dies At Age 91 Years

Rev. Ray Shantz conducted funeral services for Mrs. Amanda Krempien, 91, in the United Missionary Church, Didsbury on Thursday, May 22, at 2 p.m. Burial under the direction of Didsbury Funeral Home took place in the Didsbury cemetery.

Mrs. Krempien, a resident of Didsbury for 52 years, died Tuesday in Didsbury hospital following a brief illness.

She was born in Strasburg, Ont., and came to Didsbury in 1900. She was a member of the United Missionary Church.

Surviving are five daughters, Mrs. Ben Good, Didsbury; Mrs. Sim Myers, Airdrie; Mrs. M. Gaddes, Victoria; Mrs. Will Strack, California; Mrs. David McCoy, Carstairs; 18 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; two sisters and a brother in Ontario.

"(Milverton) The death of Mrs. Edward H. Doepel, 81, occurred Sunday at the home of her son, Edgar Doepel, Milverton. She had been in ill health for the past two years and bedfast for several months.

The former Maria Weber, she was the d/o the late Noah Weber and Elizabeth Kolb and was born at Strasburg June 26, 1866. Her marriage to the late Edward H. Doepel took place March 13, 1888. He predeceased her in March 1946. Following their marriage the couple took up farming at Strassburg and later resided at Wiarton and Hanover. They retired to Milverton 20 years ago. Mrs. Doepel was a member of Burns Presbyterian Church, Milverton, and was an active worker of the Women's Missionary Society.

Surviving are two sons, Edgar, Milverton; Harry, Bentley, Alta.; two daughters, Mrs. Ada Sanderson, Brussels; and Mrs. A. F. (Violet) Dixon, Galt; one brother, Ephraim Weber, Guelph; and three sisters, Mrs. Amada Kremtaim (sic), Didsbury, Alta.; Miss Lucinda Weber and Mrs. George Latsch, both of Kitchener; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. One daughter, one brother and two sisters predeceased her...Greenwood Cemetery, Milverton.")

Weber, -- Ephraim K., Guelph, Ont., was born April 15, 1868; passed to be with the Lord, Sept. 28, 1955, after a lengthy illness; aged 87 y. 5 m. 13 d. He lived in Saskatchewan for some 20 years. He was a faithful member of First Mennonite Church and an active Sunday school worker. He is survived by two sons and two daughters. The funeral services held at Kitchener were in charge of C. F. Derstine. Burial was made in First Mennonite cemetery.

A lengthy illness ended in death yesterday for Miss Lucinda Weber of Kitchener who died at the KW Hospital. She was 80. For the past 6 years she has been a patient at Knollwood Hospital. Miss Weber was born Sept. 18, 1871 at Strasburg, d/o the late Mr. and Mrs. Noah Weber. She was a member of Stirling Ave. Mennonite church and of the Women's Missionary Society. Surviving are one brother, Ephraim of Guelph, and two sisters, Mrs. Amanda Krampien of Didsbury, Alta. and Mrs. George Latsch of Centreville....

"Mrs. Edith Quickfall, 76, of 101 David St., died Tuesday at KW Hospital after a lengthy illness.

Born in Kitchener March 20, 1882, she was a dau. of the late Mr. and Mrs. Alexander Shoemaker. She was a member of Zion Evangelical United Brethren Church.

Mrs. Quickfall was predeceased by her husband, A.C. Quickfall, Nov. 15,1928, and one son, Richard, in April 1943.

Surviving are one son, Clark of Kitchener; four daughters, Miss Evelyn Quickfall and Mrs. Harold (Ellen) Berlet of Kitchener, Mrs. Wallace (Pearl) Simms of Mimico and Mrs. Arthur (Eileen) Dahms of Waterloo; two sisters Miss Susannah Shoemaker and Mrs. Louisa Latsch of Kitchener. MRS. ALFRED SNYDER


Mrs. Clara W. Snyder. 76, St. Jacobs, widow of the late Alfred Snyder, died at her home early Sunday morning of last week after a lengthy illness.

The eldest daughter of the late E. W. B. Snyder. she was born at Parkway (German Mills), in 1865. Mrs. Snyder was a member of St. Jacobs Calvary Evangelical Church and took an active part in its various organizations.

Surviving are three sons, Earl of East Geduld, South Africa, Clive of Kitchener, Kenneth of Toronto; two daughters, Mrs. D. B. Harkness of Burlington and Mrs. Geo. Withers of Johannesburg, South Africa.

The thoughts of our young people have this Spring, surely turned to housekeeping. A very pretty Wedding Ceremony was performed in St. Jacobs this afternoon, when Mr. Cranson Snyder, son of Mrs. E. W. B. Snyder, M.P.P. was married to Carrie, eldest daughter of Mr. C. A. Heinrich. The friends of the young couple assembled at the residence of the Bride's parents and at 4 o'clock the words that pronounced them man and wife were spoken by Rev. A. R. Shultz, of Elmira. Miss Annie Heinrich, sister of the bride, was bridesmaid, while Mr. Wm. Snyder, brother of the groom, officiated as groomsman. This evening Mr. and Mrs. Snyder leave for Buffalo and Rochester, where they will spend a short time. Mr. Snyder is a book-keeper in the office of the Waterloo Mfg. Co. and he and his wife bride, on their return, will reside in Waterloo

F. W. Snider

The latter is a young man of ability and considerable business experience who has succeeded in building it up from its precarious existence to one of the leading and most successful industries of Wilmot. The mill today have a capacity of 150 barrels of flour per day, having four double sets of rolls and the building is four stories high and contains amply space Mr. Snider's special brands are "Atlas" and "Belle" for which he finds a ready market for all The can produce in addition to supplying a large local trade he ships many carloads annually to Montreal and other leading markets. Water is the motive power and of which there is sufficient for the year round. Since August last Mr. Snider has purchased as high as forty thousand bushels of wheat from the farmers throughout this section, and in his chopping department since the same month he has produced 13,500 bags of feed. The latter department is supplied with the latest improved machinery and has the capacity to supply the needs of a wide section of country. The mills are in charge of Mr. Byron Swartz, a practical miller. He is the son of the late John Swartz who was accidentally killed here a year or two ago.

Mr. Snider was born at German Mills in April, 1870, and it can be truthfully said that he grew up in the milling business, his father having been for many years extensively engaged in this industry and who is to-day one of the most extensive mill owners in the Province. F. W. has had control here about 4 years. He was married to a Miss Steller and at present is the father of two children. It gives the CHRONICLE Scribe pleasure to note the success of young men who start out on a business career and have taken due advantage of a thorough system of business training during the days of their youth. In this respect the subject of my sketch is one among the few.

William Weber Snider12 the son of E. W. B. Snider and Nancy Weber was born in St. Jacobs on Feb. 25, 1872. After attending the St. Jacobs public school he spent a year at Naperville College, Illinois. In his youth he worked in his father's mill at St. Jacobs and later bought it from him. He continued to operate it until 1919 when he sold it to Walter Snider of Conestoga. After his retirement from milling Mr. Snider showed sound judgment in financial matters. He became president of the Canada Felling Company in St. Jacobs, and of the Anthes Foundry Company in Toronto. He was a charter member of the Waterloo Historical Society. On the death of his sister Lola he suggested that her bequest to the village take the form of a library. Mr. Snider was the first chairman of the Library Board and continued in that position for almost 30 years. During his life-time residence in St. Jacobs he showed great interest in village affairs and generously supported the Evangelical church. Mr. Snider married Alice Snyder of St. Jacobs in 1898. Although their formal education was limited they travelled and read widely and sent their five daughters to college. Mr. Snider's creative imagination found expression in his home and in his garden, four and a half acres which at the time of his marriage he bought from his father and made beautiful with trees and flowers.

ELIAS W. SNIDER

Funeral services for Elias W. Snider. 74, of St. Jacobs, who died Tuesday, May 30, on a liner entering New York harbor, was held last Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at the Dreisinger Funeral Parlor, Elmira.

Burial was in St. Jacobs Evangelical Cemetery, Rev. A. E. Pletch officiated. Mr. Snider, a well-known St. Jacobs resident, was returning from a trip to Europe when his death occurred. Born in St. Jacobs. he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. E. W. B. Snider.

Surviving are two sisters, Amy. St. Jacobs: Ada, Toronto; and three brothers, Cranson and Edwin, both of Waterloo. and William, St. Jacobs.

The History of St. Jacobs Branch Library

The St. Jacobs Public Library sits on a small lot behind St. James Lutheran church and the Old Factory, in a small, red brick building. Inside the door a staircase leads the way up into the interior of the library which is a gracious, friendly room, large and bright, including two wings and a central alcove.
The wing to the north of the door, with windows on two sides and book-filled shelves, is the children's section. It contains a long, low table with a bench on each side. An identical wing to the south is the adult section, with the traditional tables and chairs. Beautiful old wooden shelves covered with books line the walls. Tying these two wings together is the alcove. It is separated from the main room by a specially constructed librarian's desk. This alcove gave the librarian an ideal place in which to work and serve. The architect planned this alcove upon special recommendation from Miss Winifred Snider of St. Jacobs, who in 1934 was in charge of Mount Allison University Library, Sackville, New Brunswick. The side walls are lined with shelves and cupboards and light streams in through two windows in the end wall. It is from this large wooden desk that the librarian commands her post.
The library owes its existence to St. Jacobs resident Lola Snider, daughter of E.W.B. Snider and Nancy Weber Snider. She had left a sum of money in her will for her sisters, Ada and Amy Snider (also her executors), to donate toward a charitable purpose in the community. Since Lola had loved books, her sisters decided that a library would be a wonderful way to remember her.
Ada and Amy invited three village trustees - Solomon Eby, Henry Ritter and Lincoln Hollinger - as well as other interested St. Jacobs citizens, to their home on August 7, 1933, to discuss the matter.
The trustees were so intrigued with the idea of St. Jacobs having its own library that they decided to hold an open meeting at the Public School Hall, on August 31, 1933.
Lola's brother, W.W. Snider, told the meeting attendants:
"The executors of the Lola Snider estate will secure a site, erect a library building, equip and furnish the same, without any cost to the ratepayers, and will set aside a sum, as an endowment, the income of which will take care of about half of its maintenance, provided the village will make itself responsible for the other half."
In the St. Jacobs Women's Institute Tweedsmuir History Books (October 15, 1959), Rene Buchanan explains that the executors of the will felt the citizens of St. Jacobs would show more interest in the library if asked to assume half the cost of the upkeep.
As the meeting drew to a close, a unanimous vote decided that the village should accept the offer of a library.
The citizens of St. Jacobs were given a chance to have their say on September 29, 1933, at Winkler's Hall. The final vote resulted in 152 for the library and 2 against.
Once the village had permission for the project, they began considering locations. Two properties were considered. One was the corner lot on the main highway, where Good's Blacksmith Shop had been for forty years. The second one was one block off the main highway, on Queen Street. It was part of the old school property, which had been purchased by the village in 1929 with the intention of creating a park.
The village trustees felt that the quiet, peaceful Queen Street location, with its large shade trees, would be an ideal spot for a library. They decided to offer it to the library committee

Snider, Amy -- At her home in St. Jacobs, on Friday, March 12, after a brief illness, Amy Snider, age 93 years. Miss Snider was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. E. W. B. Snider.
