Bechtel.-Bro. Jacob S. Bechtel was born in Bloomingdale, Ont., July 2, 1914; aged 74 y. 4 m. 19 d. On Feb. 28, 1865, he was married to Salome (Roos) Devitt. This union was blessed with 8 children, 2 dying in infancy, leaving to mourn their loss a wife, 5 daughters, and 1 son. He had been ailing for about 2 years with cancer of the stomach. All his life was spent without God and no hope for the future until about 2 months before the death summons came he desired a minister to visit him, being deeply concerned about his soul's salvation. About two weeks later he sent for a bishop and wanted to be baptized and received into the church, which was done. He mourned his misspent life, but rejoiced in the saving power in the blood of Jesus. Funeral services were held July 4 at the home by Noah Hunsberger and at the Berlin Church by Jonas Snider in German, and by Pastor Burns of the Evangelical Church, Waterloo, in English.

Ernst.--Daniel B. Ernst, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Ernst of Heidelberg, Ont., was born Feb. 3, 1865; died Jan. 2, 1927; aged 61 y. 10 m. 30 d. His first wife, Fanny Rudy, died about 10 years ago. Later he married Barbara Sauder, widow of Moses Sauder of New Holland, Pa. Besides the widow he leaves the 5 sons, 2 daughters, 1 sister, and 3 brothers. The oldest son, Josiah, died 1917. Bro. Ernst united with the Mennonite Church in his youth, and remained a faithful member to the end. Nearly two years ago he began to be troubled with a sore toe, which later was found to be cancer. After months of intense suffering it was decided to amputate his leg below the knee. This was done last summer and at first it seemed as if he would get well, but later he again began to fail and soon there were signs of internal cancers, which were the cause of his death. He possessed a wonderful constitution, great physical strength, and an unusually sweet and cheerful disposition. He was ready and anxious to leave this world and be with his Savior. Funeral services Jan. 5, by Jesse B. Martin at the home, and Oliver Snider and Moses M. Brubaker at St. Jacobs Church. Texts, Isa. 33: 17; Job 14: 14.

Ernst.-Henry B. Ernst was born at Bamberg, Ont., March 11, 1873; died at his residence in Waterloo, Ont., Oct. 1, 1937; aged 64 y. 7 m. 19 d. He was married to Eleanor Randall who predeceased him 27 years ago. He leaves his beloved wife and 2 sons (Eldon of Embro, Stanley at home), 3 daughters (Mrs. Henry Scheerer and Mrs. John Scheerer of St. Jacobs, and Elma at home). Surviving are his wife (Charlotte), 2 daughters (Mrs. Ida Schields of Dodson, Mont., and Mrs. Clara Busch of Guernsey, Sask.), 6 sons (Dr. Angus Ernst of Watrons, Sask.; Ira, David, and Herbert of Guernsey, Sask.; Lorne and Stanley of Plunkett), 2 brothers (Henry and George of Elmira, Ont.), and 1 step-sister, Mrs. Lovina Brubacker of St. Jacobs, Ont. About 2 years ago he suffered a stroke and has since been in poor health, confined to his bed since last November. Funeral services were conducted March 10 at the Sharon Mennonite Church by M.H. Schmitt. Interment in adjoining cemetery.

HENRY ERNST

Henry Ernst, 86, died Wednesday of last week at his home here. Born in Wellesley Township, he farmed near Macton for 50 years and had lived in Elmira the past 20 years.

He was the son of the late David Ernst and the former Elena Bechtel.

Besides his widow, the former Elizabeth Foell, he is survived by one daughter, Matilda, in Elmira; one brother and one sister. Three children predeceased him.

Funeral was held Saturday, at 3 p.m. at the Dreisinger Funeral Parlor, with Rev. C. L. Mitchell of Gale Presbyterian Church in charge. Burial was in Elmira Cemetery.

GEORGE ERNST

The death of George Ernst, 81, occurred at his residence, 28 Park Ave., early Thursday, following a brief illness.

The son of the late Mr. and Mrs. David Ernst he Was born in Wilmot Township, March 4, 1866. His marriage to the former Mary Foell, who survives, took place in Kitchener in 1899. The couple farmed near Glenallan for 23 years and resided in Elmira for the past 35 years. Mr. Ernst was a member of Gale Presbyterian Church.

Surviving, besides his wife, are three daughters, Mrs. Irva Jefferson, Elmira; Mrs. A. H. (Minnie) Heiser, Kitchener; Mrs. Clarence (Lena) Strome, Windsor; nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Two brothers, Henry and David, of Elmira, and one sister, Mrs. Eli Brubacher, St. Jacobs, also survive. One son Irvin predeceased him in 1945.

The funeral service was held Monday at 3 p.m. from the Dreisinger Funeral Chapel. Interment was made in the Elmira Cemetery. Rev. C. L. Mitchell officiated.

Pastor and Wife Are 50 Years Wed

An interesting event took place Sunday when Rev. and Mrs. Orphen Wismer of Baden celebrated their golden anniversary. They has as attendants 50 years ago Mr. And Mrs. N. Snyder of Stasburg and they attended Sunday's anniversary. All of Mr. And Mrs. Wismer's eight children are living. Seven were present Sunday, Bryon of McCallsbury, Iowa, Mrs. Isaac Snyder of Baden, Herbert of Baden, Elmer of Kitchener, Jerry of Ayr, and Mrs. Lorne Shantz of Baden. Milton of Windsor was not able to attend. Dinner was served at Forest Hill Gardens, after which the family spent the afternoon at the old homestead near Baden, where their son Herbert now resides. Mr. and Mrs. Wismer were presented with two lovely gifts, one from the family and one from Mr. And Mrs. Snyder, for which Mr. Wismer gave hearty thanks.

At the Freeport Hospital, Freeport, on Sunday, Jan. 30^th 1972, following a lengthy illness, Herbert J. Bechtel, age 86 years, of 64 Cedar St., North, husband of the late Laura Boehmer, father of Clarence of Waterloo, Mrs. Mable (Mabe) Morrison of Bridgeport, Mrs. George (Gerine) Haubach of Paradise Lake, Mrs. Walter (Almeda) Reeve of Kitchener and Mrs. Priscilla Jones of Galt; 18 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; besides his wife, he was predeceased by his parents, one daughter Mrs. John (Evelyn) Noble and five sisters. Mr. Bechtel was involved in sports and in 1906 pitched the winning baseball game for the Waterloo Beavers to give the team the first Ontario Championship. Petro-Canada edict spells Doom for tiny restaurant

If there's a neighbourhood Diner in heaven, it must look like Mabe's Place

Bacon sizzling on the grill. Cigarette smoke hangs lazily in the air. The pattern on the yellowed linoleum floor is worn clear through in front of the grill. The chipped arborite counter is slippery, buffed over the years by countless elbows.

The food is good and plain; grilled cheese sandwiches, french fries, burgers and the like. Best of all, breakfast is served all day. If you're a little short, no problem. You can put it on your tab. Catch you on pay-day.

But Mabe's Place, next to the Granite Club at 243 Park Street. In Kitchener, is soon to be just a memory. At the end of April, it's coffee maker will stop making brew, it's deep fryer will be drained of oil and its grill will go forever cold.

Petro-Canada is closing 1,000 of gas stations across the country, including the one at Park and Agnes streets that also been home to Mabe's for as long, it seems, as anyone can remember.

"I was shocked really", said Paul Fleming, who along with partner Marlene Schmidt, has owned Mabe' for the last five years. "One day you got a job at the end of April, you don't. Big business is just eating up the little guy"

The restaurant called Mabel's lunch for years. When the owner Maple Morrison, retired and sold the business, the restaurant was briefly known as The Cottage, Fleming and Schmidt bought the business with a $15,000 loan and renamed Mabe's :unch that loan has just been paid off "Now it's too bad goodbye."

The dream of owning their own business ended with a two line letter from Petro-Canada, informing them their lease is terminated and requesting that they vacate the premises by April 30 leaving it in proper repair and clean condition."

Fleming said he was told to take anything he wants because Petro-Canada plans to level the site. They don't want any competitors reopening a place., what the government doing they we supposed to be creating jobs not taking them away.

It hurts, said Yusuf Saleh, who has been manager of the gas station for 4 years. "I don't really know what I'm going to do."

Saleh noted that the Uniroyal Goodrich Tire plant across the street is scheduled to close. Seagram's Distillery is gone and a nearby Domtar plant closed two years ago. "This whole street will be like a ghost Street."

Fleming believes he could have stayed open even with the Uniroyal Goodrich plant closing. Mabe's is one of those few places people on welfare can afford to eat, he said cigarettes and lottery tickets will always sell and children come in after school to buy candy.

"I'm going to miss the place" said longtime customer Lloyd Hewitt, who was sitting on the narrow counter, nursing a coffee. "They used to say Petro-Canada stood for Pierre Elliott Trudeau rips off Canada. Now it's that mulrooney. He's trying to close up the country."

"It's a dying breed" said Fleming, 32 of his restaurant "I used to come in here when I was a kid to buy candy. That's when you could buy candy without paying the GST. That's when a double bubble with a penny, not $0.05. Now even the comic aren't in colur."

For now it's business as usual at Mabe's. Fleming said he doesn't know what it do when it closes.

"I don't know, maybe I'll go on welfare like the rest of the customers I am between a rock and a hard place with the economy the way it is."

Nothing will beat owning his own business. "It's the independence." There's something wrong, you know what's wrong when your in charge. Did not taking crap from somebody else."

Fleming has started a petition calling on Petro-Canada to change its mind he is already collected 2000 signatures, but he doesn't have much hope when you're up against people like that, they don't care. Whenever you pick up paper, something's closed. It's a scary

HEUBACH, Gerine Gladys Peacefully on Monday, July 13, 2009 at K-W Health Centre of Grand River Hospital in her 95th year. Surviving is her son, David and his companion JoAnne Kocher; her grandsons, Thomas of Vancouver and Robert and his companion Heather Thomas of Kitchener. Gerine was a retired employee of Cluett-Peabody (Arrow Shirts). In her younger years she was very active at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church serving as a Sunday school teacher and later as the co-ordinator of the Sunday school. She is predeceased by her husband, George, her parents, Herbert and Laura Bechtel, sister, Evelyn, Mabel and Priscilla and her brother, Clarence. She is survived by her sister, Almeda -Reeve; sister-in-law, Doris Bechtel, brother-in-law, Edward Heubach. Special thanks to the nursing staff of the 6D south and to the staff of The Westmount LTC Facility who provided excellent eare for the last three years. At Gerine's request cremation has taken place. There will be no funeral home visitation. A memorial service for family and friends to celefbrate Gerine's life will be held in the chapel at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church (54 Benton Street, Kitchener) on Friday, July 17, 2009 at 2 p.m. with Rev David Malina officiating. In her memory, donations to St. Matthew's Lutheran Church Foundation or the charity of your choice would be appreciated as expressions of sympathy. JONES, Priscilla - It is with great sadness, the family of Priscilla (Toddy) Jones announce her passing, at Cambridge Memorial Hospital, on Friday, April 11, 2008, in her 90th year. Beloved and devoted mother of Todd and Pat Jones, Jeffrey and Elizabeth Jones and Janet Finlay. Special grandmother to Jennifer (Casey), Jarron (Gayle), Geoff (Shann), Jordan (Melinda), Scott and Julia. Her greatest joy in the past year was the birth of her two new great-grandsons, Jaxton and Carter. She was predeceased by her sisters, Evelyn and Mable and brother, Clare. Survived by her sisters, Meadie and Gerine, and many nieces and nephews. Some of her favorite hobbies were researching the Bechtel family history and scrapbooking for her grandchildren, passing down many wonderful memories. Toddy delighted in family gatherings and always enjoyed visiting with everyone. CLARENCE BECHTEL 1922 - 2007 Peacefully, at Pinehaven Nursing Home, Waterloo, on Sunday, August 26, 2007, at age 84. Beloved husband of Doris for 61 years; loving father of Dick and Theresa, Larry and Cheryl, Bob, Judith Martin, and Brenda and Jim Polillo; loved grandfather of Cheryl and Don MacTavish, Joanne and Andy Volcansek, Kim and Shane Droog, Dawson Bechtel, Mackenzie and Marc Murphy, and Jaquoline Martin; great-grandfather of Sara, Ryan, Jason, Cameron, Nathan, Rhyan, and Kaden; dear brother of Pricilla Jones, Almeda Reeve, and Gerine Heubach. Predeceased by his parents, Laura and Herbert Bechtel, and by sisters, Mabel Morrison and Evelyn Noble. Clare was a lifelong member and usher at St. Michael's Church, and was a veteran of the Second World War. He enjoyed bowling, horseshoes, and playing cards.
