    Notes:

    The death of Mr. John Buckel, sr., a highly respected resident of New Hamburg, occurred at his home in that village on April 19th after a lingering illness, aged 71 years, one month and seven days. Deceased, who was born in Alsace, Germany, came to Canada with his parents about sixty years ago and cleared a homestead on the 17th line, East Zorra. About 18 years ago he retired from farming and moved to New Hamburg, where he resided up to the time of his death. He leaves a widow and nine children- three sons and six daughters-to mourn his loss. They are : John, of the Imperial hotel, New Hamburg ; Henry, in Toronto ; Louis, in Pennsylvania; Mrs. Lorenz Arnhold, North Easthope ; Mrs. John Mayer, Albion hotel, Wellesley ; Mrs. Aug. Hartmann, New Hamburg; Mrs. Charles Mayer, New Dundee; Mrs. John Kabb, New Hamburg, and Miss Isabella at home. He also leaves forty-five grand-children and three great-grand-children.

    Died.-     On Saturday last Mr. John Buckel, sr., one of our highly respected citizens passed peacefully away at his residence on Byron street after a lingering illness at the age of 72 years, 1 month and 7 days. Deceased, who was born in Alsace, Germany, came to Canada with his parents about sixty years ago, and cleared a homestead on the 17th line of East Zorra. About 18 years ago he retired from farming and moved to New Hamburg, where he resided up to the time of his death. He leaves a widow and nine children, three sons and six daughters to mourn his less. They are. John, of the Imperial Hotel here; Henry of Toronto; Louis of Pennslvania ; Mrs. L. A. Arnold, Shakespeare; Mrs. John Mayer, Wellesley; Mrs. August Hartmann, New Hamburg ; Mrs Chas. Mayer, New Dundee; Mrs. Jehu Rabb, New Hamburg, and Miss Isabella at home. He also leaves forty-five grand children and three great-grandchildren. The funeral took place on Tuesday morning to the R. C. church, of which the deceased was a devoted member, and thence to the R. C. cemetery for interment. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to the widow and family in their sad bereavement.

    Mrs. Mary Arnold Passes.

    Another of the aged and esteemed residents of New Hamburg has passed away in the person of Mary Buckel, widow of the late Lorentz Arnold, who died at her home early yesterday morning in her 87th year. Mrs. Arnold had been in feeble health for some time due to the infirmities of old age. The deceased was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Buckel, Sr., and was born in East Zorra on December 11th, 1849. Following her marriage on January 10th, 1871, to Lorentz Arnold she resided on a farm in South Easthope on the Shakespeare-Tavistock highway until they retired to New Hamburg in 1909. During her long life she was a faithful member of Holy Family Church and in her younger days gave much of her time and ability to church affairs. Sixteen years ago on January 10th Mr. and Mrs. Arnold celebrated their golden wedding. Mr. Arnold died on November 27th, 1923, and two sons William and Jacob, also predeceased her. There are left to mourn her demise six daughter and two sons, namely, Mrs. J. J. Berger, Mrs. John E. Reid and Misses Matilda and Lovina, of New Hamburg, Mrs.J C. C. Carmody, of Detroit, Mrs. J Edward Dietrich, of South Easthope, John, of near Shakespeare, and Eugene, of New Hamburg. She is also survived by two brothers and two sisters, Henry Buckel, of Toronto, and Louis in Pennsylvania, Mrs. John Rabb, Detroit, and Mrs. Chas. Messner, Kitchener. There are also 24 grandchildren and 2 great grand- children. The funeral will be held on Monday forenoon at 10 o'clock to Holy Family Church for requiem mass followed by interment in the local R. C. cemetery.

    Dies Suddenly In Detroit

    Word has been received here of the sudden death of Mrs. Marion Carmody, 68, widow of the late Charles Carmody, in Detroit. Mrs. Carmody was stricken with a heart attack while a passenger on a street railway car on Tuesday and although she was immediately rushed to hospital, she died before reaching there. Her husband, before his death, was head of the fingerprint department of the Detroit Police Force. Deceased, who was 68 years old, was born in South Easthope, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Lorentz Arnold, who later moved to New Hamburg. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Wm. Goering, Detroit, five sisters, Mrs. Edward Dietrich, Shakespeare, Mrs. John Reid, Mrs. J. J. Berger, and the Misses Matilda and Lavina Arnold, New Hamburg, and two brothers, John, Shakespeare and Eugene, New Hamburg. The funeral took place in Detroit on Thursday with services at the Church of Visitation in that city. Local relatives who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Berger, Mr. Clayton Berger, Miss Marcella Berger, Mrs. John Reid, Miss Lavina Arnold and Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Dietrich.

    HARRY HARTMAN

    Harry Hartman, 118 Madison Ave. S., died April 18th St.Mary's Hospital after a lengthy Illness. He was 82.

    Born in New Hamburg, Feb. 7, 1886, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. August Hartman, he had lived in Kitchener for the past 35 years. Mr. Hartman was a horse trainer for many years and a member of St. Joseph's RC Church.

    Surviving are his wife, the former Edna Correll three sons, Leon, Walter and Peter, all of Kitchener; seven daughters, Mrs. William (Geraldine) Driedzlc, Mrs. George (Pat) Tudge, Mrs. Robert (Margaret) Fosbury and Mrs. Alice Madison, all of Toronto, and Mrs. John (Greta) Dunnington, Mrs. Cyril (Betty) Gross and Mrs. Mervin (Lorraine) Godfrey, all of Kitchener. He was the last surviving member of his family.

    Prayers at the funeral home April 20 were followed by requiem high mass at St. Joseph's RC Church. Msgr. R. M. Haller officiated and interment was In Woodland Cemetery.

    John E. Buckel, Former Now Hamburg Resident, Died In Toronto Hospital

    The death took place in St. Joseph's Hospital, Toronto, early on Tuesday morning of John E. Buckel who was seriously injured in a head on auto collision on the provincial highway near Oakville on Saturday evening. Mr. Buckel was returning from Port Credit to his home in Brantford, having as passengers his 13 year old son, John, and C. A. Chittenden, of Kainsville, and J. A. Bernadine, of Brantford, who were all injured but are reported to be out of danger. Mr. Buckel suffered severe head injuries, a broken arm and knee cap and succumbed to his injuries.

    The driver of the other car, Wm. Foreman, aged 24, of Detroit who figured in the smash up was instantly killed and another passenger in his car was also injured.

    The accident occurred about four miles east of Oakville and according to reports the Foreman car got half way into the ditch and in trying to get back onto the pavement Foreman lost control and smashed into the Buckle car. An inquest into the accident will be held on Friday.

    The late John Buckel was a son of the late Joseph Buckel and was born on a farm in East Zorra. Following the death of his father the family moved to New Hamburg and resided here for many years. Here he was employed for many years in the New Hamburg Manufacturing Co. plant and about twenty years ago moved to Brantford. He was 43 years of age and a devout member of the Catholic Church. He leaves his sorrowing window and two sons to mourn his tragic death. He also leaves two brothers, Arthur and Joseph Buckel, of Kitchener, and one sister, Mrs. James Sutton, of Alma.

    Joseph Louis Messner of 177 Clark St. died Wednesday at the Toronto General Hospital after a brief illness. He was 48.

    Born in Kitchener, Dec.. 18, 1920, he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs.. Carl Messner. He had been employed as a steward; at the Knights of Columbus Hall for two years.

    A member of St. Aloysius RC Church, he was also a third degree member of the Knights of Columbus and belonged to the Council of Catholic Men.

    Surviving, besides his wife, the former Norma Brenner, are one son, Michael at home; four daughters, Anne, Catherine, Mary and Cecilia, all at home; one sister, Mrs. Roy (Margerite) Utley of Kitchener.

    The body will be at the Schreiter - Sandrock Funeral Home after 7:30 p.m. tonight. The parish rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. Friday followed by a special Kitchener Knights of Columbus prayer service at 8:30 pin.

    Prayers at the funeral home Saturday at 10:30 a,m. will be followed at 11 a.m. by requiem mass at St. Aloysius RC Church. Rev. C. A. Hauser will officiate. Burial will be in Woodland cemetery.

    But a new revolution in hockey stick construction arrived in 1943 with a patent by Clayton Berger of New Hamburg, and the hockey stick was transformed into what we know today.

    Berger's development changed the simple hockey stick into multiple different sections which came together to make the entire stick.

    This alteration allowed it to be manufactured with substantially less wasted material and also created a very light, strong and durable hockey stick.

    GENTLEMAN AND ATHLETE PASSES IN DEATH OF LAWRENCE BERGER

    The Grim Reaper claimed Lawrence (Larry) Berger, popular and versatile Stratford athlete, at his home in New Hamburg. last Thursday night, his death occurring at 10.20 p.m.,, following an attack of pneumonia which developed from tonsillitis. He had been ill since June 14th on, which date he left Stratford, for his home. Gentleman as well as athlete "Larry" was deservedly popular wherever he was known but in Stratford particularly where he was one of the scintillating stars in the hockey firmament. He came to Stratford in 1918 after playing hockey with New Hamburg and the Kitchener Union Jacks and during the next two winters played on the Stratford Junior Hockey the Ontario Hockey Association. While his hockey reputation was practically a local one up until 1924 he sprang Into province-wide notice in the spring of 1920 when the Stratford Juniors lost the provincial championship to the fast sextette of the Toronto Canoe Club, as his speed. Was one of the features of the final games.

    Larry was born in Tavistock, Ont and was the second son of Mr. and Mr J. J. Berger, now of New Hamburg. He was twenty-four years of age last January. During the first seven years of his life he lived with his grandfather, the late Lawrence Arnold who resided near Tavistock. His parents have lived in New Hamburg during the past twenty years while "Larry" has been in Stratford since 1918. He boarded in the city with Mrs. Rasey. 94 Nelson street, and was employed at the C. N. R. Shops.

    Besides his parents he is survived by one brother, Clayton of New Hamburg who has played hockey for that town, and two sisters, Mabel and Marcela. Miss Mabel is employed at Wolverton while his other sister is a training at St Michael's Hospital, Toronto. The funeral was held on Monday morning ten o'clock from the Holy Family Church.
